Well that's easy for anyone British to say as they would have understood most, if not all, of the references in the ceremonies at London. For someone Brazilian, it would be exactly the same for the Rio games. With that said, still gotta love the London ones
Not really. The UK is a more "worldwide" country than Brazil is. UK TV-shows are shown all over the world, UK music is played all over the world and so on. Brazil is mostly known for Copacabana, the statue of Jesus in Rio, and samba. The point is that people around the world recognize Mr. Bean, James Bond, David Beckham, Monty Python, the Spice Girls etc. And therefore the references are known also outside of the UK. In Rio most people outside of Brazil didn´t have the slightest clue about the people performing there

03:14, seeing "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life" on British TV considering how controversial LIFE OF BRIAN and that crucifixion scene was back in your parents and grandparents' day made me smile. Time flies past quickly in terms of how shocking something can be.
I think it was because people realised how idiotic it is. I was born in 1998; my parents are huge LoB fans, and we are always quoting it at each other. It's the sort of offensive that is so stupid and insane that it's not offensive.
The best Olympic Games begining and finish ever. UK has got a veeery big Culture and popculture and i really appreciate and love this. Love from other coutry❤️💓❤️
This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen, we all have the Olympics for a reason, to celebrate our universality but also share why our nations are special individually and to accentuate the exceptionality of the individual, and Eric and everyone involved in this nailed it for everyone so unbelievably hard, and actively addressed Britain’s cruel empirical history via India. Perfect.
I’m reading Eric Idle’s autobiography (sorry, Sortabiography) and had to come and watch this again after reading his description of it. And the fee he got for this was... £1. And even then they didn’t pay up until he wrote to them months later, at which point they sent him an apologetic letter with a pound coin taped to it :)
The summer Olympics is every four years, but then there is also the winter Olympics every four years. However, since 1994 the summer and winter Olympics alternate every two years. The London summer games were in 2012. This year, 2014, had the winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The next summer games will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016. In 2018 PyeongChang, South Korea, will host Olympic winter games. So, in fact, every second year there is indeed either a summer or a winter Olympics.
Wikipedia informs me there was more to the closing ceremony, but I will never be convinced, because this is absolutely the only part I remember, and it is glorious.
I read that British troops were trapped in sea in a war somewhere and waited to be rescued by singing this song. This song really have a way to uplift you when life is looking forlorn
Fantastic, brilliant, wonderful, fabulous, hilarious, profound, beautiful, delightful, thank you. Now to celebrate with a nice cup of tea and a biscuit, play it again and hum along.

I hope Scotland's Commonwealth Games opens with a 5 minute Frankie Boyle stand-up routine.
NO SNP
Oh god thst be amazing
It's moments like these that really make me appreciate the pop culture icons the UK gave us. They were either legendary, bizarre, or both.
No one else has, or ever will achieve what Monty Python has achieved. They will always be the ultimate and iconic comedic legends of all time.
Two of the most uplifting songs on the planet played at the Olympics back to back. Im happy now.
Can you imagine being there? That stadium had to have been shaking at every chorus lol
The planet was probably shaking
I don’t have to Imagine, i was there!
Can't believe it's been almost nine years! I was seven, and remember being so hyped because of Rowan Atkinson. Sadly, knew almost nothing about Monthy Python back then.
I remember watching this. Gave me goosebumps. Still does.
To me, this is one of the reasons why the London Olympics cerimonies are the most memorable for me
This year was and still is the most brilliant opening and Closing of the Olympics ever!!! 🏴🇬🇧🥰
American here, but thank you, Britain 🇬🇧, for Monty Python. Between Holy Grail and Life of Brian, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life
This is the most valuable piece of music in humanity, this brings us together regardless of race, creed or political views.
Probably the greatest closing to any Olympics games ever!
In 1991 we used to sing this song as we were doing block jobs in Basic Training in the British Army. Not sure we would have made it through without it! Thankyou Eric!
I always come back to this video as both a pick-me-up when i'm down and a reminder that there's at least one point in this performance that the whole world just enjoyed being human
This video encapsulates the British spirit so perfectly. Sure everything may be terrible but you just gotta smile and keep going.
I love how you can still hear the audience singing after he gets interrupted.
9 years later and i still cant think of any better Olympic opening :)
Sadly I’ve forgotten about this part and it just put the biggest smile on my face
Well this was part of the closing ceremoney which may be why you don't remember it from the opening
This sorta stuff makes me proud to be British!
Andrew Lewis I am Spanish, and here, we are proud that gentlemen dressed as clowns torture bulls to death T_T
***** Y no solo eso, si se dedicara lo que se dedica a subvencionar actos taurinos, se usara para preservar la raza, no sería necesario hacerles pasar por torturas.
This kind of stuff makes me want to be British lol
Andrew Lewis Drunk and watching this but it is a good thing that makes me proud of the fun and music we have given the world
Lliam C. I am just happy Im not deaf and blind.... That's enough :)
Eric idle is a jewel to england
this made me feel better
Love from other coutry❤️💓❤️
lol only the british would end the olympics with a show like this
I enjoyed it. and I'm not even british
True. The thing is, we, unlike everyone else, always look on the bright side of life. You see how it works? ;)
best olimpic show ever, but i still miss benny hill show
I have to give it to you Brits. This was an amazing show
I think its only the Brits who could get away with it as well. Something to be said for a bout of acceptable British excentricity
Watching this in 2021 still in the thick of a pandemic and thinking how life was much simpler in 2012...
in 24.. and thinking can we go back ?
This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen, we all have the Olympics for a reason, to celebrate our universality but also share why our nations are special individually and to accentuate the exceptionality of the individual, and Eric and everyone involved in this nailed it for everyone so unbelievably hard, and actively addressed Britain’s cruel empirical history via India. Perfect.
I’m reading Eric Idle’s autobiography (sorry, Sortabiography) and had to come and watch this again after reading his description of it.
And the fee he got for this was... £1.
And even then they didn’t pay up until he wrote to them months later, at which point they sent him an apologetic letter with a pound coin taped to it :)
that may well be a joke! and i dont think appearing at the olympics show is something you turn down!
Mr Blue Sky and then THIS SONG!
My, London sure knows how to party
Eric idel. The man steals the show in everything he's part of. Comic juggernaut
Makes me smile and be filled with joy watching this.
I read that British troops were trapped in sea in a war somewhere and waited to be rescued by singing this song. This song really have a way to uplift you when life is looking forlorn
during the falklands theHMS coventry was hit and the stranded sailors sang this in the water.
@@Whoami691 thanks, that clears it up
This song is still the greatest thing the UK has given the world.
*midway though Always Look on the Bright Side of Life* And Now For Something Completely Different
Fantastic, brilliant, wonderful, fabulous, hilarious, profound, beautiful, delightful, thank you. Now to celebrate with a nice cup of tea and a biscuit, play it again and hum along.
This comment is impossible to not to read in a British accent
2012 Probably one of the best years and being British everyone got together and everyone was positive with the world
Just saw this video, November 1/2023, and I must say, this was an amazing performance by Eric Idle.
I love how the whole freaking stadium sings along :D
Awesome show!
Even after all these years I still keep finding gems like this one. Danny Boyle, I'll always be your fan. Eric Idle as well. They are masters of their craft.
I love the 2012 ceremonies so much. A gem of humanity
🤣
its so magical and wonderful to see people from differnt countries, who they dont know its other to sing all together this song
This is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.
ours was so brilliant because almost everything we cherish was included. cricket on the village green the industrial revolution that led to britain being the most powerful county the world, the wartime efforts, the nhs, shakespeare, harry potter ,pop and classical music, the queen. most of all it was fun!
The best thing about this video, besides my dying of laughter when Eric is surrounded by the guys doing a dance he didn't know, was when the angels came up from the floor with him, and the girl in the back right was whistling at the right time to his song....Monty Python fans will never die...
four years on I still get emotional watching that. simply wonderful
I stayed up ONLY to watch Eric Idle and when he came up, I literally cried of joy! No joke! And I'm pretty sure, I'm not the only one.
I had tickets for the first day, I watched the ceremony and actually cried most the time as it was perfect in showcasing the UK, I am a true brit and a patriot so watching that and wanting it to beat China was important to me so when the US stations the next day were saying "best opening ceremony ever" I was proud, by the way the Queen was expected to use an actress to speak to bond but refused , there was no way she wasn't going to be part of it, they even used the real palace staff!! (I reckon she would have jumped if they let her!!!!
There will never be a better year than 2012, it's just an amazing year
1999 was Better. Eclipse, Millennium Dome, Millennium new year celebration ect...
+Andrew Whitney but the best Olympic Ceremony is this.
Fantastique J.O de Londres.. les plus beaux qui ont été organisés avec ceux de Barcelone en 1992..Tout..tout..fut organisés de manière magistrale. Bravo Sébastien Coe d'un admirateur français 💙🤍❤
I remember watching this as a very young child, about 6 or 7, and having no clue what significance it had. Now i am 15 and have seen both the main Monty Python films and
I realise now I missed out on this
I will always love Eric Idle.
