    I need to get back in shape. I look good in this video. I've been living out of hotels and eating restaurant food for the last 12 months

      Thanks. We each have to adjust. What works for me, might not work for someone else.

    I love fleece. I have a nice Colombia and North Face full zipper sweater. I didn't think of taking synthetic t-shirts though, good idea. Watching your videos has given me lots of new tips and ideas. Thanks.

    Good job Marty, just what I needed to see. Down here in hot East Texas. I freeze at 30F.

      Thanks. This is an older video, but the clothing I use today is basically the same setup.

    I started doing quite a bit of traveling after some significant tragedies about 8 years ago. I love to travel but the burden of packing and choosing what to take was
    always an issue.
    This year I started watching gear accumulation videos such as yours for tips on international trip packing LOL! I know its crazy but I always struggle with this.
    Can't seem to get comfortable putting all I need into one regulation weight suitcase.
    I have learned quite a few tips from you including the waterproof/sweating issue. I do walk a bit and never really made that connection. And the fleece characteristics - great tip.
    I must say that watching your videos and those of
    others have given me a full blown change of packing behavior!
    I now pack synthetic material as much as possible in case I need or want to do my own sink laundry. Especially if I am staying in one place. Some areas of the world do not have easy laundry facilities. But there is always a way. I imagine you and your fellow hikers would have the best tips in this area.
    I have improved but still struggle with taking too many shirts and socks. Not sure why - maybe its a psychological thing.
    I'll never be a hiker although it is great to watch and experience vicariously!
    Just wanted you to know that it is not only hikers/outdoors people who benefit from your efforts.
    Thank you!
    Oh - quick comment on your shirt burning. When I travel internationally I take clothes with me that I am ready to give up on or don't particularly care for all that much.
    Or I buy some cheap thrift store items.
    On the return trip I toss them - it leaves a bit more room to travel home with in case I buy something. Which I typically don't - but then I get the gift of a lighter load.
    Elle

      Ellecram thanks for the awesome feedback . On a trip to Nepal I donated my clothes, and gear. It was more appreciated than just a "tip"

    The territory is different between central Ontario & Alberta in the mountains but the guide lines still apply. Thanks for a very complete video. Brian 76

    I love fleece! I hike in fleece pants. It rains so much here and I sweat my ass off in rain gear also. Fleece always keeps me dry on the inside

    Hi Marty. I'm Canadian living in Italy for the last 16 years, hiking when i can, but hoping to do a thru-hike on the SI. Pretty exciting idea! Anyway, just wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos, thank you! And, would love to have one of your hats! Can't get a proper Canadian toque (can't remember how it is spelled!) here to save your life. Would be so pleased to have one of yours, and would be happy to buy a couple. Let me know if it's possible!

    Really interested in what you have to say. Volume is cranked to high & it's still a struggle to hear what you're saying in most of the video.

    Marty, love your videos. I've noticed in many of your videos you are wearing a neoprene pant of some type (green with black knees). Can you share what type of pant that is and why you are so fond of them? Thanks again for your informative videos.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  7 років тому

      Its a pair of pants I got in Nepal. They're cheap knock-offs of a Mammut design. I like them for their sentimental value and the are comfortable. They're actually not very good for hiking. I don't wear them hiking any more. They're too hot, and they're too flammable. They're full of holes for campfire sparks.

    Nice video Marty!! Thanks for sharing. Somewhat off topic but do you use a bear canister? Maybe I just haven't been paying enough attention to your hiking videos to notice! Or do you use something like an Ursack and hang your food, etc.?

      I usually carry a bear spray. Check out the video I posted last week on my hike to Lake of the Horns. In that video I encountered a bear. I have lots of discussions on bear safety with people on UA-cam. I hope to make a video on the topic some day.

    Do you have muscular calves from hiking so much?

    I was just wondering if you are prone to getting blisters on your hikes. I have always been told that wearing two layers of socks will increase heat and friction, thus leading to blisters. I was curious what your experience has been.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  4 місяці тому

      I always wear two pairs of socks, and I never have blisters. The key is simply finding boots or shoes that fit properly. I tried a lot of boots of ver the years, and settled on Scarpas. I wear mine a bit tight, which prevents any slipping. Key area for fit is the heel. I also change my lacing throughout the day. Tight going uphill, loose on flat land.

    What brand of synthetic socks are the ones you took on your trip?

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  3 роки тому +1

      This video is so old. I don't have "favorite" socks. I just use what ever synthetic socks happen to be in my drawer. Any reputable brand like Nike, Adidas or Puma is good.

    Hi Marty just wondering do the neoprene pants make your legs sweat? Do they breath at all?

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  8 років тому

      They are really hot on summer day, and do make me sweat. They're better in the fall. I wouldn't buy them again.

    • @matthewbegin7704
      @matthewbegin7704 8 років тому

      +Martyupnorth I was surprised when you said neoprene pants I've never heard of that, I know people use neoprene as waders when fishing in rivers so the pants must not breath at all. I wonder what your ideal under lay under your pants would be for late fall early winter would be?

    What brand boots do you wear?

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  8 років тому

      The ones I currently have are Scarpa M3. I believe they're discontinued. Boots are very personal and a critical piece of equipment. Don't buy a pair without first trying them on (ie don't buy on-line). Whatever you do, never go on a long trip with new boots. Break them in. Get them wet, dry, worn etc before using on a long trip. Nothing worse than blisters. No reason for blisters in fact. If you're getting them change something. Try new boots, new socks, different way to lace, whatever. Because I travel over rugged land and with a heavy pack I choose full-size leather boots. I tried a few times to hike with running shoes, but I just can't do it. I really like having firm ankle support. Me personally I wear 2 pairs of socks in my boot. A thin synthetic on the skin and a thick woll over that. I like by boots super tight. Length of the boot is important, but so is the width. That's why I like Scarpa and Asolo, they fit narrow feet. I find Solomon too wide. Thanks for watching

    What type of booths do you use??

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  7 років тому +1

      I go through a pair of boots very quickly. Boots are very personal. What fits me, might not feel comfortable for you. My last pair was Scarpa S3. Great boots.

    Don’t do laundry in the water source. Especially with soap.
