Hi Martin, as usual nice and intelligent review. My two cents: Sleeping mat: it took me two years to understand a very simple truth. Insulation comes from air, so it doesn’t matter how expensive is the mat, if you compress it too much with your body it just doesn’t work. Put a weightless foam mat ON TOP of your inflatable mattress: your body won’t be able to deform it a lot and the air will do it’s job. Put another one on the bottom preventing punctures and you have a bullet proof, warm system. Tent: a 3 season tent is the bare minimum. Showers, snowstorms and whatnot are always around the corner. As Finns like to say: if it’s bad outside, get in your shelter and start eating. Always carry a bigger tent: condensation on the walls of the tent is inevitable, so if your sleeping bag touches the wall it will get wet and the insulation capability will degrade. Clothes: I tried everything and I ended up with two materials: wool and canvas. The first will keep you warm in any condition(dry or wet), it won’t smell bad after just one day in the woods( you can always put it close to the fire and disinfect it with the smoke), it will last forever. The second will never break down on you. No need to bring 200 items: one set for the day(one inner and one middle layer made of wool and a canvas waxed anorak) and one for the night( wool pants, a wool layer), a pair of thick wool socks and 2 pairs of wool socks liners. And never forget a pair of tough reliable gloves! Fire: it’s a lifesaver so be sure you always have at least two different options on wood preparations. A good saw(I use silky as well), a good outdoor knife(not a Rambo knife) 4/5” sturdy. You may need it for chopping or feathersticking and in an emergency it can replace the saw. If you hike in the winter and you’re in a remote area, bring a camp axe(50cm long). In the winter you need a lot of wood to keep you warm, prepare food, dry your clothes. Cooking: lighters everywhere!!!! Last but probably most important: First Aid Kit. Remember you are in the woods and probably hours or days away from any help. Remember that you can make almost everything out of a bendate and some surgical tape. Include a box of large spectrum antibiotics if you’re going remote. Remember that boiled pines sap will serve well as antiseptic. And don’t save weight on this!!! Here’s what I learnt from my trips in the woods: I usually go to very remote areas so probably for some little hikes this may seem an overkill, but it’s incredible how just a few miles deeper in the woods can drastically reduce your chances to access to help in case something goes wrong. Ps: bring a good map(and a spare one) and learn how to read it and navigate with a compass. Your super expensive gps will be good for planting your tent’s pegs if it runs out of battery😂
+1 on map, compass and knowing how to use them. One of the teenagers on our last group hike that I organized and led criticized me for being archaic with my map and compass. He had a gizmo on his wrist that would save him if he got lost, display a crude map, track mileage and elevation, text, emails, and so on. 😆 We ended up modifying the hike to traverse a ridge for some spectacular views and to get away from the crowds. When we got to the top, we took a break and everyone wanted to know how much we'd climbed. The boy's smart watch ran out of juice (later discovered that it malfunctioned). He was terribly ashamed because a couple of hours earlier, he was roasting me and selling the benefits of 'getting with the times'. I used the oportunity to teach him as well as the others in the group about the reliability of a good compass, map, and the ability to navigate with them. While up on the ridge, we pretty much had a 360* view of the landscape so I taught them how to orient the map, how to correlate contour lines to physical features, etc. By the time I got done, THEY were answering their own questions about how high we'd climbed, how far we'd walked, how much farther to camp, how's the terrain up ahead, where might we find water. Teachable moment would be an understatement. I would say that a gps with SOS or a beacon might be a good tech item to carry into the deep wilderness (especially solo) though I don't yet carry one myself.
Don’t forget the possibility of DIY - I’ve made tarps and quilts with high tech materials for pretty cheap, and ended up with ultralight gear. I recently switched to a 35 L pack similar to this one, and I’m philosophically a bit more UL than Marty, but he’s got a ton of experience, so much respect. Thanks!

50 lbs in my 20's, 40 lbs in my 30's, 30 plus lbs in my 40's and 50's and finally on our last trip grand total(drum roll please} 26 lbs at age 66. Like you Marty my gear has evolved over the years. You are right though I have purchased some of my down jackets at Costco at a really good price. I am very impressed how you got that gear into a 46 liter pack. Thanks for the video.
I did a trip this summer that made me realize that, going into my fifties, I'm going to have to get serious about getting my pack weight down if I'm going to enjoy it and be safe...but I can't afford to replace everything...and some of the lightweight stuff seems flimsy as hell. Your survival and comfort is on your back. I want to shave weight in areas that I'm comfortable with...in fact, I know I have to but I'm dreading seriously looking at everything and considering what needs to be replaced.
@@twochordcool it's definitely a process. But it can be done. I do agree with carrying enough equipment to keep you safe. The conditions can change in an instant in the mountains. Snow storms in August are not uncommon. From my research going lighter can be expensive.

Then I can look at replacing things that cuts the highest percentage of weight for that particular piece of gear. But if I could get my pack weight down from the mid to high forties (pounds) to mid to high thirties it would feel like real progress, and it shouldn't be too hard to do I imagine.
Nice,comfortable and practical loadout,Marty. Some folks want all the luxuries,but complain about cost and weight. I would rather carry less,be comfortable and enjoy the scenery and camaraderie that mona and groan about heavy loads and sore muscles. My 60l Osprey is good for carrying 5 to 7 days of stuff. Just got back from Michelle. We went in the long way, from Cataract and Pinto Lake. Out via Owen Creek. I'll never do Owen Creek again. Worse trail ever. I'm done with the Cline P.L.U.Z. for a while. I suggest you do Michelle via Cline River and Water FallS creek instead. The lakes are really nothing special. The highlight is the Pass. above the lakes. Highest point on the GDT trail.

Thanks for the video.I agree with the Nalgene bottle love em.They are bombproof, I accidentally melted the mouth of one and it only leaked when upside down, lasted the rest of the trip easily. My first winter trip I put boiling water in one and it kept me warm at night.
I purchased two rather expensive self inflating back packing mattresses over the past 3 years and BOTH of them began leaking air within 5 uses :( Small holes in bad spots made them nearly impossible to fix. So Ive gone back to cheap foam. Nothing worse than being on a multi night hike and you're sleeping on a deflated mattress (feeling every small rock). Gold old light weight camping foam is cheap and wont let you down.
I always assumed the greater the R factor with regards to the sleeping mattress the better ofc and they can get super expensive for small R factor difference. What you said makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. Not sure how you would fit everything in that small packpage for a 10 day trip. I remember you hiking with 75L+ packback and it was always full for shorter hikes haha. Thanks for sharing!
I like your approach to the balance between Cost vs Weight vs Functionality vs Personal Preference. I'm not sure I would feel as comfortable with an ultra-light Dyneema tent in your neck of the woods. You pack for where you are hiking... What climate? -- I'm gonna bring a good 2 layer rain jacket (maybe pants too) if I am expecting rain or snow. What Altitude? -- Not bringing a hammock if I'm spending most of my time above treeline. What Season? -- We all know to pack differently for the winter. I like that you bring a proper first aid kit and extra stuff for when something breaks. I wonder if it is a generational philosophy...? Folks (I've come across on the trail) between the ages of early 20's to mid 30's seem to be focused on hitting a base weight below 8 lbs. -- CRAZY
One of the last things that I was holding onto, from when I was packing out 30+ pounds was my Nalgene. I love those things, they're unbreakable. But I finally switched over to 1L Smartwater bottles. I keep one with electrolytes in it (nuun), and the other straight water. The weight of two is still significantly less, but that's not even why I switched. The ability to keep one for electrolytes when I'm sweating up a storm, and the other for when I need water for meals at nice, is my primary motive. I've used the same smartwater bottles for three seasons, they actually hold up better then I thought they were going to.
Only cause you asked for a dialogue ;) R value (while difficult to use a as set in stone method due to varying testing standards across manufactures (and some only use a suggested temperature rating and avoid R value all together)) does make a huge difference. That applies to foam pads, inflatables, and under quilts for hammocks. When the product has additional insulating properties (down, synthetic fill, reflective, etc.) the R value in improved and your body stands a greater chance to resist having it's heat lost to the ground via conduction. The biggest reason people have cold sleeps in the backcountry isn't their sleeping bag/quilt, it's the cold ground beneath them that will suck your body heat until you are at equilibrium with it. So folks, please keep R value in mind when shopping for a pad, it isn't a "salesman gimmick". It can make a difference between a restful sleep and a very uncomfortable one. That being said, most pads on the market are already falling into the R value 2-4 range, which is suitable for most 3 season trips, so even if you ignore the R value in your purchase, you will likely end up with something relatively suitable.
I guess the R factor changes effective 2020 got overlooked. REI and Moosejaw got tired of trying to sell customers a pad that a r value and one that didn't. Then each manufacture that had an r value tested theirs differently. That meant that there is no consistency from one r value to the next unless you stay inside of one manufacture. The new standard is the r value will stay. Second thing is there will be a set way to test the pad. Third thing is all pads that are currently being sold will have to go through this testing procedure another words there will be no grandfathering in any pads on the old system. Now there is a uniform way of comparing pads from one to the next. This should help people unclutter their minds with meaningless trivia. They terms for r value shouldn't be used in this application because of what the term was intended for as you stated construction. What would be more applicable would be a statement of resistance to the transference of cold. When you put an object between you and another object this creates a restriction on the transference of temperature. The question is how long will this pad allow your body temperature to stay at this level. My personal experience with pads is the foam pads with the old r value of 1.5 I froze on. Using the same sleeping bag the next weekend I switched to an old r value 5.3 REI Airrail and it was huge jump in warmth. I carry a thermometer with me and the outside temps where the same and I slept in different locations. Then I went to the Thermarest Neoair Xtherm with an old R value of 5.7 and the first time I slept on it it felt like somebody turned on the heater. This again was using the same sleeping in the same temperature. Then I upgraded to an 800 fill down $350 sleeping bag and that was the icing cake with its 18 degree Fahrenheit rating. Now I don't have to look like Santa Claus going down a chimney at night. Now with the the Xtherm this uses the Mylar sheet inside which reflects the heat back to you. Hence the reason why they are used for emergency blankets even by fire departments, SAR, Coast Gaurd and insulation for your house to reflect back into the house. That is the reason why on the new r value system it jumped to 6.7. In fact all of thermarest line up pretty much went up (the xtherm is the only one with the mylar blanket inside). Most of the other products that had r value went down. I'm 50 years old and since my first year in life I have been camping, horseback riding, cutting firewood, hiking, back packing, mountain biking, dirt bikes and whatever else in the woods in those years. Right now I spend 150 days in the woods. With that said there is gear that is useful and some gear that is created is worthless and the most expensive gear is not always the correct answer. The two most useful items are cheap a plastic bottle to pea in so you don't have to leave your tent and toilet paper (tp can be used for more than one thing). Buy products that can be flexed over into other uses while your back packing can be worth more useful than whole variety of singular use items. Outlet stores for the big name stores is how you get good prices on good gear. For instance I have two down coats full value would be over $700 I have just over $300 U.S. dollars into them. Bottom line is it is a lot of trial and error. Willing to do that has lead me to Wal-Mart and some of the most used things has come from them. Buy what you really need not something that has nothing to do with your life.
It’s hard to appreciate r-value with a two season top layer. Doesn’t start to matter a whole lot until you’re actually approaching and slipping below that freezing point. Heat transfer is pretty settled science. Pay attention to your insulation, especially with a comfy quilt.
That is ‘fundamentally’ a great load out Marty. Anything more than that is a luxury item. However, I thought Chef Evan mentioned that if it’s not made by Arc’teryx you shouldn’t buy it! P.S - my ‘fundamentally’ count was at 2 😂😂.
Thank you for your great videos! I recently bought a small backpacking stove and was experimenting with it at home. I’m wondering, have you ever burned yourself on the trail? Do you have something to treat burns in your first aid kit?
I worked in the oil patch my whole life. Burns were a real hazard of the job. If you ever burn yourself the only remedy is water, more water and still more water. Don't listen to anyone who says you will cause infections. Soak the burn in water for 30-40 minutes, until the pain resides. Deal with blisters and infections later. Nothing beats cold water for dealing with a burn.
Backpack , boots, sleeping pad, sleeping bags and tent or any type of shelter . Spend more money on these things. ( one day I find a guy in the camp jumping around with a ~300 dollars knife ! Guys DON'T be that guy our nature don't need Rambo!) . Enjoy your life.
You could teach me A TON but I will tell you that your puffy jacket can double as a pillow....won't save you much weight over dedicated pillow but I think you'd find it more comfortable.
Timothy Dannenhoffer unless you need it for insulation while you’re sleeping! My puffy is part of my sleep kit, to extend the range of my quilt, and provide head insulation.
@@brycepickford1719 I prefer a thinner pillow usually anyway...a down jacket inside an inside out fleece-lined stuff sack is the way I go and I find it perfect.
I actually use pillows that are sold as disposable inflatable pillows for use in medical settings - they’re used for positioning patients in MRI scanners, etc. I learned about them on one of the UL forums. They come with a drinking straw that you insert into a sleeve, and you can insert the straw and deflate them also. Not as sturdy as a purpose made backpacking pillow, but extremely light, and one will easily last a few weeks if you’re semi careful with it. Not for everyone, but I’ve used them for years and they work for me.

On my last 10-day hike I brought 6 pais of sock, 2 extra pairs of underwear and 2 extra T-Shirts. I keep one pair of socks just for camp. The others I interchange when conditions are wet. I wear each T-Shirt for 5 days, and keep one just for camp.

Reflected technology in some mats make them much warmer then Mats that rely on air.

Just got back from Michelle. We went in the long way, from Cataract and Pinto Lake. Out via Owen Creek. I'll never do Owen Creek again. Worse trail ever. I'm done with the Cline P.L.U.Z. for a while. I suggest you do Michelle via Cline River and Water FallS creek instead. The lakes are really nothing special. The highlight is the Pass. above the lakes. Highest point on the GDT trail.
Martyupnorth I’ve hiked down Owen Creek before just for a day trip. The trail was a disaster with deadfall. I’m guessing that’s still the case ?
@@awalkintherockies9475 Dead fall, entire sections of the trail washed out. Steep, side slopes, stripped of all soil. Just slippery roots. Mud. Rope sections. Just all around bad.
Yeah buddy I use the Z-Lite and it was like 40 bucks also the Tungsten 1P is awesome, hasn't done me wrong yet!

Thanks for the video.I agree with the Nalgene bottle love em.They are bombproof, I accidentally melted the mouth of one and it only leaked when upside down, lasted the rest of the trip easily. My first winter trip I put boiling water in one and it kept me warm at night.

I find by rubbing candle wax works well on the outside tent seams 🕯 ,so no water can sip in.
I purchased two rather expensive self inflating back packing mattresses over the past 3 years and BOTH of them began leaking air within 5 uses :( Small holes in bad spots made them nearly impossible to fix. So Ive gone back to cheap foam. Nothing worse than being on a multi night hike and you're sleeping on a deflated mattress (feeling every small rock). Gold old light weight camping foam is cheap and wont let you down.

I always assumed the greater the R factor with regards to the sleeping mattress the better ofc and they can get super expensive for small R factor difference. What you said makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. Not sure how you would fit everything in that small packpage for a 10 day trip. I remember you hiking with 75L+ packback and it was always full for shorter hikes haha. Thanks for sharing!

I'm not sure I would feel as comfortable with an ultra-light Dyneema tent in your neck of the woods.

What climate? -- I'm gonna bring a good 2 layer rain jacket (maybe pants too) if I am expecting rain or snow.
What Altitude? -- Not bringing a hammock if I'm spending most of my time above treeline.
What Season? -- We all know to pack differently for the winter.
I like that you bring a proper first aid kit and extra stuff for when something breaks.
I wonder if it is a generational philosophy...? Folks (I've come across on the trail) between the ages of early 20's
to mid 30's seem to be focused on hitting a base weight below 8 lbs. -- CRAZY
One of the last things that I was holding onto, from when I was packing out 30+ pounds was my Nalgene. I love those things, they're unbreakable. But I finally switched over to 1L Smartwater bottles. I keep one with electrolytes in it (nuun), and the other straight water. The weight of two is still significantly less, but that's not even why I switched. The ability to keep one for electrolytes when I'm sweating up a storm, and the other for when I need water for meals at nice, is my primary motive. I've used the same smartwater bottles for three seasons, they actually hold up better then I thought they were going to.
That's 200 g I'm not willing to shed. Especially in winter. A narrow bottle would be frozen.

R value (while difficult to use a as set in stone method due to varying testing standards across manufactures (and some only use a suggested temperature rating and avoid R value all together)) does make a huge difference. That applies to foam pads, inflatables, and under quilts for hammocks. When the product has additional insulating properties (down, synthetic fill, reflective, etc.) the R value in improved and your body stands a greater chance to resist having it's heat lost to the ground via conduction. The biggest reason people have cold sleeps in the backcountry isn't their sleeping bag/quilt, it's the cold ground beneath them that will suck your body heat until you are at equilibrium with it.
So folks, please keep R value in mind when shopping for a pad, it isn't a "salesman gimmick". It can make a difference between a restful sleep and a very uncomfortable one.
That being said, most pads on the market are already falling into the R value 2-4 range, which is suitable for most 3 season trips, so even if you ignore the R value in your purchase, you will likely end up with something relatively suitable.

I guess the R factor changes effective 2020 got overlooked.
REI and Moosejaw got tired of trying to sell customers a pad that a r value and one that didn't. Then each manufacture that had an r value tested theirs differently. That meant that there is no consistency from one r value to the next unless you stay inside of one manufacture.
The new standard is the r value will stay. Second thing is there will be a set way to test the pad. Third thing is all pads that are currently being sold will have to go through this testing procedure another words there will be no grandfathering in any pads on the old system.
Now there is a uniform way of comparing pads from one to the next. This should help people unclutter their minds with meaningless trivia.
They terms for r value shouldn't be used in this application because of what the term was intended for as you stated construction. What would be more applicable would be a statement of resistance to the transference of cold. When you put an object between you and another object this creates a restriction on the transference of temperature. The question is how long will this pad allow your body temperature to stay at this level.
My personal experience with pads is the foam pads with the old r value of 1.5 I froze on. Using the same sleeping bag the next weekend I switched to an old r value 5.3 REI Airrail and it was huge jump in warmth. I carry a thermometer with me and the outside temps where the same and I slept in different locations. Then I went to the Thermarest Neoair Xtherm with an old R value of 5.7 and the first time I slept on it it felt like somebody turned on the heater. This again was using the same sleeping in the same temperature. Then I upgraded to an 800 fill down $350 sleeping bag and that was the icing cake with its 18 degree Fahrenheit rating. Now I don't have to look like Santa Claus going down a chimney at night.
Now with the the Xtherm this uses the Mylar sheet inside which reflects the heat back to you. Hence the reason why they are used for emergency blankets even by fire departments, SAR, Coast Gaurd and insulation for your house to reflect back into the house. That is the reason why on the new r value system it jumped to 6.7. In fact all of thermarest line up pretty much went up (the xtherm is the only one with the mylar blanket inside). Most of the other products that had r value went down.
I'm 50 years old and since my first year in life I have been camping, horseback riding, cutting firewood, hiking, back packing, mountain biking, dirt bikes and whatever else in the woods in those years. Right now I spend 150 days in the woods. With that said there is gear that is useful and some gear that is created is worthless and the most expensive gear is not always the correct answer. The two most useful items are cheap a plastic bottle to pea in so you don't have to leave your tent and toilet paper (tp can be used for more than one thing). Buy products that can be flexed over into other uses while your back packing can be worth more useful than whole variety of singular use items. Outlet stores for the big name stores is how you get good prices on good gear. For instance I have two down coats full value would be over $700 I have just over $300 U.S. dollars into them.
Bottom line is it is a lot of trial and error. Willing to do that has lead me to Wal-Mart and some of the most used things has come from them. Buy what you really need not something that has nothing to do with your life.
It’s hard to appreciate r-value with a two season top layer. Doesn’t start to matter a whole lot until you’re actually approaching and slipping below that freezing point. Heat transfer is pretty settled science. Pay attention to your insulation, especially with a comfy quilt.
That is ‘fundamentally’ a great load out Marty. Anything more than that is a luxury item. However, I thought Chef Evan mentioned that if it’s not made by Arc’teryx you shouldn’t buy it! P.S - my ‘fundamentally’ count was at 2 😂😂.
Thank you for your great videos! I recently bought a small backpacking stove and was experimenting with it at home. I’m wondering, have you ever burned yourself on the trail? Do you have something to treat burns in your first aid kit?
I worked in the oil patch my whole life. Burns were a real hazard of the job. If you ever burn yourself the only remedy is water, more water and still more water. Don't listen to anyone who says you will cause infections. Soak the burn in water for 30-40 minutes, until the pain resides. Deal with blisters and infections later. Nothing beats cold water for dealing with a burn.

You could teach me A TON but I will tell you that your puffy jacket can double as a pillow....won't save you much weight over dedicated pillow but I think you'd find it more comfortable.
Timothy Dannenhoffer unless you need it for insulation while you’re sleeping! My puffy is part of my sleep kit, to extend the range of my quilt, and provide head insulation.
A puffy coat compresses almost completely, doesn't cut it as a pillow for me but I like a bit of loft

I actually use pillows that are sold as disposable inflatable pillows for use in medical settings - they’re used for positioning patients in MRI scanners, etc. I learned about them on one of the UL forums. They come with a drinking straw that you insert into a sleeve, and you can insert the straw and deflate them also. Not as sturdy as a purpose made backpacking pillow, but extremely light, and one will easily last a few weeks if you’re semi careful with it. Not for everyone, but I’ve used them for years and they work for me.

That's while I loved my big Bora. I still have it. I can bring 5 days of gear, including a packraft, and only have the oars on the outside.

Absolutely not. These packs are rated for no more than 30-35 lbs. I hunt, and I use an external frame pack board to haul out quarters. Cheers.
If you are going on a 10 day hike how many pairs of socks and jocks would you take with you? Do you wear the same pants and shirt every day?
On my last 10-day hike I brought 6 pais of sock, 2 extra pairs of underwear and 2 extra T-Shirts. I keep one pair of socks just for camp. The others I interchange when conditions are wet. I wear each T-Shirt for 5 days, and keep one just for camp.
