If anyone reading this decides to take the same trip, please consider some additional side quests: - While in Mojstrana, ride additional 5 km to Pericnik waterfals. These waterfalls are special, as you can walk behind them. - If staying in hotel Spik near Kranjska Gora, make a hiking trip to Martuljski slapovi. - While passing Kranjska Gora, take a break at Jasna Lake. You can continue riding to Bovec over Vrsic pass, or... - If you decide to skip Vrsic pass, and ride from Kranjska Gora to Bovec through Italy (which I prefer), stop at Nordic ski center Planica. There you will se one of the largest ski jumps in the world, take a zipline or go cross-country skiing even in the summer. - Continuing from Planica to Italy, stop at Laghi di Fusine and Tarvisio. - I am not very familiar with Bovec area, but I know there is the tallest waterfall in Slovenia, Boka waterfall. But it can be viewed only from afar. Much nicer in my opinion is Kozjak waterfall and Tolminska korita. - In Kobarid you can visit a war museum about WWI Isonzo Front - One of WWI's bloodiest frontlines. - Cycling in Italy really is chaotic, but I found a beautiful bicycle path from Trieste to Hrpelje, Slovenia, called The Giordano Cottur cycling path. I swore to myself I need to visit this path again.
wow, i should have made the video before i went to get this comment ahead of time. thanks so much for the thorough input and great advice. we did actually stop by the boka waterfall since it was barely off the road riding south. funny enough we weren't as impressed after all the other ones we saw primarily because we were so far away but also the light wasn't great. i'll post some photos if any of them turned out well. thanks for watching and if you have advice for the surrounding countries i'd happily take that as well, i'll be returning to this part of the world soon if i can help it.
So we agree on Boka waterfall :) I don't have any specific advice for the surrounding areas, but if you liked the mix of alpine and Mediterranean scenery in Slovenia, you could check out the The Alpe Adria Cycle Path: From the city of Mozart to the Adriatic Sea.
Stunning video. You’ve made it thoroughly an inspite of relatively bad weather you evidently had a nice week. My advice: you should take two weeks and visit more “side dishes” - as mr.sightunseen already said. Nice itinerary. Saint Jacob church on the end is absolutely gorgeous.

Really nice work. Well done. I’m fortunate to live in Ljubljana and most of my hikes and rides start from my front door. That trip up to Sveti Jakob at the end is one of my regular rides, though I go up a different way on smooth road, stop for a coffee in the village then on to the church and return on unpaved road through forest. Brilliant day. Although you might have felt unlucky with the weather, be thankful you weren’t in the Czech Republic at that same time which (amongst a few other countries in Central Europe) suffered very bad flooding this year. One of my favourite rides is from Jesenice (easy train ride from Ljubljana) up to Tarvisio on the most gorgeous ex train line bike path. There’s a side trip to some lakes (just in Italy) and from lower down the climb over the Vršič pass starts.
Thanks! Yeah, that ride to sveti Jakob was great and it's so cool how close to the city it is. Good point about the flooding, I was reading about that. Spain flooded shortly after this as well so you're right that we were lucky in some ways. I think we did catch some of that rail trail you mentioned to Tarvisio though maybe not too much of it. Thanks for the feedback and I may seek some more advice if I'm lucky enough to return anytime soon.
@biking-places I have KML/GPX files for all my rides which I’d be more than happy to share. Two friends rode the West Slovenian Bike Loop this September and much enjoyed it. Took about 10 days going gently. It includes the Vršič pass going North to South, the descent from which requires brakes in top condition.
Super video. Nice passages of natural beauty. My friend (63 years) is bikining every second day on the top with bycile. Last year he has equiooed bicycle with e-motor. 🙂 Half of hill at 7:02 was crushed by earthquake in 1511 into river.

Your video is nicely narrated. I like that style, as opposed to talking while riding. It was good to see some of the places we didn't see in September 2023, when we stayed at an AirBnB in a small village between the airport and the mountains. I got in a few day rides on my Bike Friday, but stayed out of the mountains except for some hills to get to Lake Bled. My wife learned about Lake Bohinj after we got back home. Almost all of my riding was on roads, not bike paths, but it's good to see that more of the latter are being built. I like your taste in places to visit.
Bled is overturism hell - but ok, people obviously like to be in masses. Lake Bohinj also overrun by tourists. So is big parts of Soca valey. But apart from that - Slovenia is really bicycle touring heaven.

If you make it back I highly recommend the mountains. My favorite pass that I rode, the predil is actually not that high up so you can def do it on a bike Friday. The views are worth it.
Honestly this is what we were told but we got lucky the time of year we went (late Sept). Either that or the weather scared off the tourists. Soca on a rainy day was empty and bohinj only had a few groups walking around. Bled was busy but I've seen much worse.
Sometimes it's nice to see if from another person's perspective. Hope you go out there and enjoy it, I'm quite jealous of people who have access to such beautiful mountains so close by.

It's a left from the road, 209, just before the road crosses the river. In a few months hopefully it will be extended much closer to bled so you don't have to spend much time on 209 at all.
Thanks for sharing. Yes, Slovenia is a terrific place for cycling, but (if you don't always use the cycle paths/rail-trails), there are plenty of very steep pitches. I was lucky enough to spend 2 weeks cycling there this summer. One tip I'd recommend is the Mangart Saddle - it's amazingly beautiful - and you cycled right past it on top of the Predil pass). The Vrsic pass is exceptionally busy and, at least from the north side, not that scenic in my opinion. Awesome that you included the coast too!
Thanks for the comment. Yes, Mangart was very much on our short list of places to try to see. I think we ultimately skipped it because the weather was terrible but also because we would have to go up and come down the same way and we were trying to get further along our route towards the coast. If I come back I'll def try to ride it, maybe instead of vrsic.

Thanks for the comment. The itinerary will vary quite a bit based on what you want to see and do and also where you want to stay. Our nights were spent on Radlovjica, Bohinj, Mojstrana, Tarvisio, Bovec, Nova Gorica, Trieste, Piran. That was the order if you wanted to go in a counterclockwise route so you can create pretty much the same route as what we used.
There was no iron curtain in Slovenia or ex Yugoslavia. People were traveling normally to the rest of Western Europe. Nova Gorica was build in order to be new center to the people which lost their center with Gorica. In order that the people would stay in that border area you needed to build city from scratch.

So that bike lane from Bohinjska Bela to Bohinj Lake is new, but actually is already one year old. And they are gonna build more of it so you dont have to go on the main road there at the start you probably remember.
@biking-places yeah it maybe could have been alreayd build if it wasn't for floods last summer were one part near river got destroyed a bit and they have to change it now so it will be higher

@@biking-places The road you used is the Wurzenpass from Podkoren/SI to Riegersdorf/AT, one of the rather steeper mountainpasses between the two countries. The T-34 tank is part of the Wurzenpass-Bunkermuseum, a secret cold war borderfortification of the austrian army meant to stop soviet attacks. Due to its camouflaged bunkers and the secret status it was largely unknown to the broad public, shut down in 2002 and reopened as a museum in 2005. So neither WWI nor WWII but Cold War
We used the storage room in the first hotel to store her bag and our boxes (which we were able to stack inside each other). I usually book a room at the same place for the beginning and end (if flying in/out of the same airport). In my experience the hotels have never said no.

Ah neat, thanks for the tip. I also have an s+s case I sometimes travel with and def don't want to lose that one. Out of curiosity what is biking in Poland like? I borrowed a bike for a day when I was I Krakow about 10 years ago but didn't get too far. It rained and I remember falling into a huge puddle on my way to return the bike though. Fun times.
@@biking-places Haha. Well for starters it’s flat and cold at the moment. I’m from SF so it’s a nice change. I’m in Wroclaw now. It’s super bike friendly everywhere. Lots of bike paths and people for the most part are courteous drivers. Tons of country roads with and w/o gravel. I feel safe. I’m looking to do some longer trips down towards the Czech republic where the mountains are and lot more scenic. It’s great overall though. Not as picturesque here but still a great place to ride.
Great photography, and you have opened my eyes to Slovenia. One thing could lift the narration into another league. As an unbroken, constant stream it becomes monotonous, and too rushed for significant information, with big leaps in subject unseparated by even a second's pause. If you tried editing down how much you say - cut two-thirds of the voiceover text - more of the atmosphere (background sound) would come through to the viewer, and key info wouldn't be rushed. Less is more. And it really would complement your great video, enriching the viewing experience.

Were there any troubles about being allowed to load bikes on the train, did you have to pay extra for that? I've never done that myself, but i have thought about it so i'm curious.
No trouble. It's a tiny nominal fee like 2 euros. There are hooks for bikes and if they are full you can still put bikes near the hooks as we saw others do.
The finished part starts about halfway between Bled and Bohinj from the main road (209). It's a left if you're riding west just before the road crosses the river to the north side. The unfinished part, which should be ready soon will continue where that one leaves off and takes you closer to bled so you can avoid the main road for more/less the whole ride.
i'm guessing you mean in the slovenia area. yeah, i think you're right that we'd be less likely to have this much rain in those months. we didn't have a ton of flexibility around the time of year we could go and in some ways this part of the year worked out in our favor. many places were much less crowded than they usually are. you win some you lose some i guess.

In winter of 2022 I have planned to do a similar tour with my wife in summer 2022. But then ruzzia has started a full scale invasion on my country Ukraine and I am not sure anymore I can do it. Do you have the route's track, strava/komoot?
i don't have a full route as i mentioned i put it together in pieces 1 day at time. you can probably get more/less the same route if you just put those locations into software (something like ljubljana - bled - bohinj - mojstrana - tarvisio - bovec - trieste - piran). you can also skip the italian/austrian side and ride from mojstrana through the vrsic pass straight down the soca valley to bovec. no shortage of terrific itineraries though. i wish you and your country a lasting peace as soon as possible so you can do the ride you were planning. thanks for watching.
Amazing footage, but let me tell you, lifting a drone in a city is strictly prohibited. You are lucky not to get caugt, the fines go up to 2500€. Ljubljana and other cities are NO FLY zone because of the Helipad on UKC Hospital, as well as any populated areas, only licenced pilotes with permition are alowed to use drones. I believe Ljubljana is not the only city in EU with such laws.
@@biking-places I don't care about those. I live under the alps and all I hear in the summer is rescue helicopter. But mountain bikers only hurt themself. Road bikers put in danger themself and anybody near them.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, Mangart was very much on our short list of places to try to see. I think we ultimately skipped it because the weather was terrible but also because we would have to go up and come down the same way and we were trying to get further along our route towards the coast. If I come back I'll def try to ride it, maybe instead of vrsic.

Thanks for the comment. The itinerary will vary quite a bit based on what you want to see and do and also where you want to stay. Our nights were spent on Radlovjica, Bohinj, Mojstrana, Tarvisio, Bovec, Nova Gorica, Trieste, Piran. That was the order if you wanted to go in a counterclockwise route so you can create pretty much the same route as what we used.
There was no iron curtain in Slovenia or ex Yugoslavia. People were traveling normally to the rest of Western Europe. Nova Gorica was build in order to be new center to the people which lost their center with Gorica. In order that the people would stay in that border area you needed to build city from scratch.
Ah yes, you're right. I should have said border instead of iron curtain. It's an interesting history, I will dig more into it.

So that bike lane from Bohinjska Bela to Bohinj Lake is new, but actually is already one year old. And they are gonna build more of it so you dont have to go on the main road there at the start you probably remember.

@biking-places yeah it maybe could have been alreayd build if it wasn't for floods last summer were one part near river got destroyed a bit and they have to change it now so it will be higher

Hi thanks for watching and the clarification. I think some of the bunkers in the area date to WWI so I guess I jumped to conclusions about the tank. Definitely not my area of expertise.
@@biking-places The road you used is the Wurzenpass from Podkoren/SI to Riegersdorf/AT, one of the rather steeper mountainpasses between the two countries. The T-34 tank is part of the Wurzenpass-Bunkermuseum, a secret cold war borderfortification of the austrian army meant to stop soviet attacks. Due to its camouflaged bunkers and the secret status it was largely unknown to the broad public, shut down in 2002 and reopened as a museum in 2005. So neither WWI nor WWII but Cold War

We used the storage room in the first hotel to store her bag and our boxes (which we were able to stack inside each other). I usually book a room at the same place for the beginning and end (if flying in/out of the same airport). In my experience the hotels have never said no.

Ah neat, thanks for the tip. I also have an s+s case I sometimes travel with and def don't want to lose that one. Out of curiosity what is biking in Poland like? I borrowed a bike for a day when I was I Krakow about 10 years ago but didn't get too far. It rained and I remember falling into a huge puddle on my way to return the bike though. Fun times.
@@biking-places Haha. Well for starters it’s flat and cold at the moment. I’m from SF so it’s a nice change. I’m in Wroclaw now. It’s super bike friendly everywhere. Lots of bike paths and people for the most part are courteous drivers. Tons of country roads with and w/o gravel. I feel safe. I’m looking to do some longer trips down towards the Czech republic where the mountains are and lot more scenic. It’s great overall though. Not as picturesque here but still a great place to ride.
Great photography, and you have opened my eyes to Slovenia. One thing could lift the narration into another league. As an unbroken, constant stream it becomes monotonous, and too rushed for significant information, with big leaps in subject unseparated by even a second's pause. If you tried editing down how much you say - cut two-thirds of the voiceover text - more of the atmosphere (background sound) would come through to the viewer, and key info wouldn't be rushed. Less is more. And it really would complement your great video, enriching the viewing experience.

Were there any troubles about being allowed to load bikes on the train, did you have to pay extra for that? I've never done that myself, but i have thought about it so i'm curious.
No trouble. It's a tiny nominal fee like 2 euros. There are hooks for bikes and if they are full you can still put bikes near the hooks as we saw others do.

We went end of Sept into early oct. It's less busy but also getting colder and wetter than earlier in the fall/summer.

hi where is this new bike path in Slovenia?
The finished part starts about halfway between Bled and Bohinj from the main road (209). It's a left if you're riding west just before the road crosses the river to the north side. The unfinished part, which should be ready soon will continue where that one leaves off and takes you closer to bled so you can avoid the main road for more/less the whole ride.

i'm guessing you mean in the slovenia area. yeah, i think you're right that we'd be less likely to have this much rain in those months. we didn't have a ton of flexibility around the time of year we could go and in some ways this part of the year worked out in our favor. many places were much less crowded than they usually are. you win some you lose some i guess.

Yes, we passed many signs for campsites in many parks. I think it would not be difficult to camp most nights if that's your preferred way to tour.
Slovenia is small but there is soooo much more to it than this places.
True and I'm sure I would have enjoyed another two weeks seeing more of it. Alas our time was limited and I thoroughly enjoyed what we did see so I have no regrets.

In winter of 2022 I have planned to do a similar tour with my wife in summer 2022. But then ruzzia has started a full scale invasion on my country Ukraine and I am not sure anymore I can do it. Do you have the route's track, strava/komoot?
i don't have a full route as i mentioned i put it together in pieces 1 day at time. you can probably get more/less the same route if you just put those locations into software (something like ljubljana - bled - bohinj - mojstrana - tarvisio - bovec - trieste - piran). you can also skip the italian/austrian side and ride from mojstrana through the vrsic pass straight down the soca valley to bovec. no shortage of terrific itineraries though. i wish you and your country a lasting peace as soon as possible so you can do the ride you were planning. thanks for watching.

Amazing footage, but let me tell you, lifting a drone in a city is strictly prohibited. You are lucky not to get caugt, the fines go up to 2500€. Ljubljana and other cities are NO FLY zone because of the Helipad on UKC Hospital, as well as any populated areas, only licenced pilotes with permition are alowed to use drones. I believe Ljubljana is not the only city in EU with such laws.

@@biking-places I don't care about those. I live under the alps and all I hear in the summer is rescue helicopter. But mountain bikers only hurt themself. Road bikers put in danger themself and anybody near them.
