What's Changed at Albert Park: The Brand New F1® Australian Grand Prix Circuit - Episode 2

- Formula 1® drivers have always prided themselves on being able to conquer street circuits where there is no margin for error.
So what's actually changed around Albert Park? What do the changes mean for lap times and Sunday afternoon?
In Episode 2, we hit the circuit and take a detailed look at the new track layout, exploring all the reasons why fans (both in attendance and around the world), are poised to be the big winners with the modifications to the new track.
The new circuit sees the the track measure 23-metres shorter than its predecessor, with 14 corners, not 16 with lap times set to be reduced by approximately five-seconds per lap.
In a nod to the circuit's history and with Sunday racing in mind, Albert Park's signature sequence of turns have not been touched with the increased speed and widening of corners set to see more mistakes, encourage overtaking and see more aggressive driving.
This is Episode 2 of a four-part series, exclusive to the Australian Grand Prix’s UA-cam Channel, detailing what has been described as the most significant facelift of the Albert Park Circuit in the event's 25-year history.

You guys should be the opening round of the season. It’s a tradition.
Got your point... but (of course there is a "but") making it a midseason event with the new layout it could make an even more exciting event. At least, for a first timer. ...who knows...

This was awesome, but was short. Really waiting for the next episode. You guys just have the perfect media team. Will be exciting to see F1 back this year with these new changes.
Can't wait to be back. We'll publish the premiere of the next episode tomorrow, but it will go live at the same time as the first two episodes - 8am Monday morning (Melbourne time)

Really liking this revised layout. I really look forward heading down to Melbourne for this race!
I like some of the changes but by making t6 a whole 7.5m wider there is literally now a straight from t4-t9 -> boring DRS overtakes; really hope I am proven wrong but kind of fear that we are going to see those type of passes now
DRS overtakes are pretty much all we have anyways. At least it's an overtake, which with DRS or not, was quite a rarity in Australia before.
Even with the new regs and cars, I still don't think we will see too many overtakes outside of DRS zones. New cars should make it easy to follow other cars through corners, so that they can be overtaken in the DRS zone. So, actually we might see even more DRS overtakes than before.
If the new regs actually work, they should remove DRS. I want to see battles, not just overtakes
DRS should be removed as quickly as possible. Only Verstappen and the older drivers showed how to overtake without it.
@@KepleroGT If you would like to see cars just go around the track, with like at max 3 overtakes per race, then yeah, go ahead an take away DRS lol. Only reason Max was able to overtake a few times with bo DRS, was when he was somewhere in the back and had a clear car performance advantage over his competition.
@@revirdkcalb Overtaking in a non-DRS section is completely useless when the other guy's gonna get past you with little effort. At the very minimum the effect should be significantly reduced. If you can't overtake a car that's slower than you then you don't deserve to.
Can’t wait for this new track revamp!
Good job guys
The first episode got me hyped for episode two 😂
Not long to wait now…

Welcome to the life of an Australian F1 fan
90% of the races for an Aussie are between 11pm and 6am.
If we can do it for 20 races you can do it for 1-2 races. :P @freddy-
@@ausgrandprix I've watched F1 since the early 80's......
I wouldn't bother mate. Its a temporary circuit that never delivers what it promises. Sleep in! Watch the replay a few hours later!
@@Mexxx65 Educate yourself you halfwit. Look up the calendar for next season.
Really looking forward to seeing the track this year - it looks like the track is going to be fantastic. Australia has been sorely missed by F1 fans globally. It must *always* be on the calendar! I don't care what time I have to get up to watch it, though sadly these days, I can't afford to pay for the full race on Sky. I just have to make sure I miss all news reports in the morning until I get, what is to be fair, a pretty comprehensive "highlights" programme.
But when I had it live, 4am, my alarm would go off and I'd head for the kettle, despite there being a full repeat at the usual post-Sunday lunch spot, and for a number of years, despite having been up during the night with one of my babies! I was happy to forgo those hours of needed sleep - just once a year, though 😂. It was part of the excitement of ending or starting the F1 year.
I'll never forget Martin Brundle's "launch", and how he ran back to the pits to get the T car. Then he broke down after going so well! Heartbreaking!
This is an awesome series, and I think a lot of people really appreciate the updates and clarity on the changes. I hope F1 takes note and brings similar videos for the newer circuits or those that have undergone similar changes
Thanks for the kind words. It's been a long time in the making, and we're excited to finally be able to show the F1 world what we've been up to these past two years.
Were gonna see moves into 9 and 10 now. hell yea lets go
Well done boys. I love how you have listend to Dan. Getting the boys in F1 involved as only gonna be beter for f1 in a whole.
Taking in the feedback of a number of the drivers was a big part of the project. We wanted the current grid to be champions of the changes and help us make the racing better.
This looks great! Was a bit sceptical since, well, change to an awesome track, but this is looking to turn out for the best. And, even though I am rooting for Max Verstappen, i want The Honey Badger to do a shoey after winning his home race here. Come on, bring on the season, just 50 days until lights out!
That's why we wanted to do this series. We know Albert Park has its fans and critics and we've been talking about the modifications to the track since the 2020 cancellation, so we were just really keen to show the world what we've been up to and think there's something in the changes for everyone.
@@ausgrandprix Loving the way you guys think and communicate. Can't wait for the race, and hopefully, when the world turns normal again, Albert Park can be the opening race for coming seasons again. Tradition has it that me and a group of friends get up way too early (the race starts at 6AM here in the Netherlands), get together at 4:30 for the pre-show and some coffee, and having our traditional 5AM beer before the race starts. Not much of a heavy drinker, but it's a tradition we've grown to love :)
I think these changes will be great 👍🏼
The back part of the track will be like Baku front straight
Beautiful!
About time the track had an upgrade, its long overdue, hopefully the f12022 game will have the new updates two, lets hope it makes for better racing.
Can confirm we have been working with the folks at Codemasters. Fingers crossed :)
I am so excited for the Australian GP this year... The new layout which is faster and provides more overtaking opportunities, the return to the calendar after 3 years, and the new cars... This is gonna be an awesome race
Looks great 👍🏼 , you changed a perfect amount to still keep it a street track
Whats your definition of a F1 "street track". A road a few taxis drive round and round on in the middle of a park?

Amazing. We can’t wait to have you both come and experience the magic of F1
I never saw it as a street track. I has a lot of gras and trees, gravel and no stupid 90° corners, but a nice flow.
And I always liked F1 to start the season there.
You should see what Albert Park looks like outside of a Grand Prix time. Episode 3 details the back half of the circuit and arguably the biggest changes as well as all the work we've done with the local community to make the new circuit a reality.
Second place this time! Still winning this championship!
Consistency is key
Can't wait for the race here again
Hope to watch Aus gp on site this year🤣
instead of making more slower corners for overtakes, they made more not overtaking straights, pfffff
To me Melbourne should always be the season opener.
We love being the season opener, but equally, after the last couple of seasons, we are just thrilled to be back on the calendar and can't wait to put on a show come April 2022.
Cant wait guys

The most beautiful circuit !
We are going to see some cars being forced wide at turn 11
Well let's just hope we get the cars on the track this year or next.
We shall see what the changes will bring for the racing and the viewing.....i am hoping to see some actuall overtakes...yes.....
As much as I'm looking forward to the race on this new layout, I'm even more curious about how many times we'll see cars spinning or running wide in practice sessions because of the fresh tarmac :D
The tarmac has been finished already, and because Albert Park is a public use facility, we will have three months worth of street cars using the roads before F1 hits the circuit
Oh man, P19 is not really a great Result. Hope for Points in next Video!
Need to improve. We believe in you.
I pray we get an Australian GP this year , because boy I miss watching Albert Park Race
prayers can come true. It was always on.
Should be exciting. Sensible changes.
I hope I'm wrong, but opening apexes increases corner speed & reduces braking, both not conducive to overtaking. There is still only one racing line. Corners should provide alternative lines similar to T1 at CotA.
Can’t friggin wait
You and us both!
The circuit is so unrecognizable when the grandstands & branding are off.
Most of the year Albert Park is a public use facility. It certainly undergoes a significant transformation around the Grand Prix.

I hope that these changes are enough to maximize overtaking possibillities and not like Jeddah street circuit where they promised us enough overtaking spots but ended up with stupid ruling like we have seen with the endingless battle between Verstappen and Hamilton.
I hope they don't cancel it, if it's going to happen
theyre already building it
@@ktmmaen5891 I think he hopes that the race doesn't get cancelled. They are really strict with COVID meassures which might make racing impossible.
Should suit the new cars with the ground effects regulations.
good👍👌😜 love it
We hear you had a pretty reasonable vantage point to see the new circuit in action earlier this year 😉
Turn 4 to Turn 9 is going to be nearly or entirely flat out, that could be absolutely ridiculous to watch. Turn 11 changes seem also really good to create at least one more overtaking point, but I don't see that we'll have any other corners where braking is going to cause passes instead of DRS.
Can’t wait for this years Aussie gp 👌
Albert Park has quite a lot of notable changes.
The lead to the fastest left and right is very bumpy after seeing Leclerc's onboard pole lap, I am not sure it that's any good for slipstreaming.
I was just there setting some fast laps
When #MarkWebber finished 5th at his home race (#F1 #AusGP) in #Melbourne in 2002.
What a great moment.
Yes
SICKKKK
“Michael no Michael that is not right. You need to reinstate the circuit design before”
Will the number of laps remain at 58 since it is slightly shorter?
That's a great question - first time we've been asked that. We don't have confirmation just yet, although i'm sure it will be available (along with race start time) in due course.
According to the new length given in F1's website (5.279 km), it should be (as 305/5.279 = 57.77 which gets rounded up to 58 to cross 305 km)
Welcome back Albert Park
One day in my life Iwant visit australia, It´s my dream when I was young
We'll be here! We're bias, but we can recommend Australia (and Melbourne) - not just for a Grand Prix, but we think its a pretty great place to visit.
nice
I want to see Daniel Ricciardo on podium in Albert Park again, but this time, wearing McLaren suit...
This is something we’d also love to see
I would love to see a GP at Bathurst ♥️
Is that the "mountain" track.
That would be spectacular but F1 would never agree to race there.
Perhaps an exhibition "race", maybe a time trial, just to see the cars running there?
Guess which track Layout we will get on the f1 game…
As we follow car number 3 through the last turns, to be the first ever australian to claim a home grand prix victory. DANIEL RICCIARDO WIIIIIINS the 2022 australian grand prix, the crowd rarrs their approval and we are going to see a big fat grin on that face i can tell u martin
Come on in the heat of the Pirelli moment
I really wanna see a hotlap of the new layout
I’ll go take my car out later and do one lol
So by widening 1 and 3 you’ve increased the apex speed, in - turn reduces the braking zone … so it will be even harder to overtake into those corners. Turn 6 will now have 0 chance of an overtake. Essentially now there is 1 overtaking point on the circuit at the old turn 13 and with drs a non exciting one at that
I think making T1 faster will mean you can stay closer up to T3 and then T3 being wider leaves more room to go around the outside, or dive to the inside. I think it is going to make things much more exciting.
Exactly. Rounding off corners makes overtaking less likely, not more. This is just a propaganda piece. Racing has always been bad at this circuit and it will be even worse now.
And they've got away with it in the past because it was the first race of the season and people are more focused on other drama. Now the cars, teams and drivers will be settled down and it will be an obvious snooze fest.
Victoria should either build a proper race circuit or give the race to another state.
@@JoshyStuart I don’t think around the outside of 3 is an overtaking opportunity IRL
@@georgemichaelides4500 2019 Max on Seb. Sure he had it mostly done before the braking zone, but he still went to the outside.
Earlier in the race, Lando went to the inside of T3 and made it stick.
I think with the wider entry it means there's more to defend, therefore if you defend the inside, there's more opportunity to brake later and send it round the outside.
I think T3 is the one to watch now; DRS main straight, faster T1 entry, then DRS from T2 and a wider entry into T3. That will be very hard to defend against IMO.
@@JoshyStuart all I’m seeing from that is , that turn 3 was fine and didn’t need altering at all.
If they wanted to make more room to overtake they should have opened the outside of the corner, not made the apex faster.
First Abu dabhi and now Australia, now it's your turn Catalunya
it's funny that now, some 20+ years after jackie stewart said that tracks needed more sweeping corners if people wanted to see more overtaking, and all these millions of dollars put into tilke dromes with the right angle corners everywhere, suddenly now f1 is going back to the sweeping corners idea.
about time.
Spain and Suzuka have tons of sweeping corners but the overtaking for both is questionable.
Are your favorite circuits, and the best circuits on the calendar, composed of mostly sweeping corners, or hard right angles?
Suzuka btw, driver and fan fav because of its sweeping corners.
Spain btw, testing fav for designers because of its sweeping corners.
Sweeping fast corners are just too micky-mouse for F1 cars these days. They only lead to follo-the-guy-in-front type of racing.
Why didn't you talk about the tightening of one corner and the final widening?
Seems like this episode only covered the changes to the first half of the track. Will possibly do the rest Next video hopefully
Why did #DanielRicciardo retire from his home race (#F1 #Rolex #AusGP in #Melbourne) in 2019?
These are still painful memories.
I didn't know they still raced in Australia...
The changes to turns 6, 9-10 don't feel right, normally, turn 6 properly is a corner where the driver made the difference, regardless of setup and what car you're driving so if you pulled it off, you'd have a good run to 9-10, where you could dive-bomb it, but now, turn 6 is a corner where the car makes the difference, and having a long flat run rather than a proper overtaking spot, is just plain and boring imo.
Then again, I could be wrong, we'll just have to see.
Yeah I have to agree about turn 6, but the only passes over the last 15 years at T9 were cars getting lapped. Making opportunities for cars to get ahead before the fast T11-12 or close up before then and get a good run into T13 will make for exciting racing, I think.
@@davidfabish-wood5278 Really, only lapped cars?
I dive-bomb every chance I get(I play F1 mobile)
The only negative is that I loved the technicality of the previous track, but now it is lost to the annals of history (it can never be scanned and put into a simulator like iRacing).
How about a shot of the quadruple DRS BLUES
They had to make these changes as the cars are too wide now and it added an additional DRS zone for artificial overtaking
We're somewhat limited given that Albert Park is public use facility and not a purpose built race track, but every decision was made with the goal of creating better racing and the last three races have really delivered in Melbourne.
@@ausgrandprix going to be interesting to see how the cars are affected in 2026 and beyond with the new regulations making the cars narrower and slightly shorter. I dream of F1 cars overtaking on corners again like the good 'ol days.
We can only hope. You can clearly see how much more room there is on track during F2 and F3. The extra space sees the drivers heaps more aggressive in places the F1 cars jus can't afford to be, so hopefully we'll see a similar trend in F1 with the new regulations. Aside form that though, the Melbourne race has been pretty exceptional the last three years.
@@ausgrandprix The race was boring overall with the front 4 failing to overtake each other. Max was only overtaken by Sainz as his brake disc was already stuck. That is why I'm looking at this video to decipher if the track changes have made for more exciting races but I feel the F1 cars are just too big and heavy and the track changes on Albert Park wouldn't have made much difference. This isn't a dig at your specific race. It's a problem at nearly every race track now.
@@ausgrandprix I wouldn't call 3 red flags last year exceptional. Entertaining for the punters with the race restarts yes but definitely not exceptional racing. Villeneuve versus Hill in 1996 was exceptional though. Button and Webbers debuts at Albert Park were exceptional drives.
4:20 no mikey" no!

Welcome to the life of an Australian F1 fan. A lot of coffee consumed on Monday mornings.
Think all the circuits are losing their character with all the quick turns. I understand the cars are getting wider, but technical corners are becoming less common and the circuits less memorable. More overtaking’s happening yes, but overtaking’s not exciting anymore. My opinion, at least.
Sorry Daniel but there's no 'DRS' zones
I seem to be the only person that doesn't think this layout will make for more exciting racing. I am dead set it will do the opposite... they've got rid of the most challenging, tight and slow corners with the heaviest braking zones and made them faster with less braking, basically made a track of chicanes..
Albert Park was already notorious for boring racing with trains of cars and not much overtaking and they've just deleted the best corners on tje track FOR overtaking. What it needs (in my opinion) is yes widening of some corner entries, but TIGHTENING of the apex to encourage overtaking into and out of corners with more chance of lock ups and mistakes..
This layout to me has just made it faster, not better for RACING!
No! You me, and 1 other I think here mate! Not even a full handful! Hahahaha! I'd take the minority youtube group any day of the year!!
Yes! its just far too easy-fast and micky-mouse for modern F1 cars and modern F1 driver styles. Yes, its needs to be made a lot more demanding of the driver, I have mentioned elsewhere in this comment section. Your ideas would work a peach Bent!
Good, good and good
