So what was that Rocket Engine about last year? After Brazil, Merc seemed to just be able to produce WAY more power - meaning Lewis could start LITERALLY AT THE BACK in the sprint race and still win the race on Sunday.
So how did they do it? And will they be able to do the same thing in 2022?
We’ve got Scarbs back to help explain - let's go!
Right, so back in Brazil we first saw this ‘Rocket Engine’ or as Mercedes called it - the Spicy Engine.
They seemed to have an OUTRAGEOUS power advantage on the rest of the field, with Hamilton reeling in cars from SECONDS back on that long-ish back straight.
And yet - the teams were not allowed to change anything about that engine. So was it a secret upgrade? Or did they just find some extra power?

Mercedes had essentially created the engine undercut. It's a strategy that plays out over races, instead of tyre undercuts which play out over laps.

The "story" is that Mercedes tried several potential devastating engine settings on Bottas. It cost him several extra engines before they found the setting maxing out the power for two or three races. In fact they overclocked the enige for a very long time, just as the quali settings from 2019 and before. The big problem is the penaltys tried to reduce the number of engines .But changing only the ICE the penalty is not a big problem.

That's why I don't really think Hamiltons charge through the pack in Brazil is as heroic as people think it is. He had a new engine that was turned up as far as they could thanks to Bottas' season being sacrificed so he could be used as a testbed and he was competing against most people that were still on their third engine.

And that one doesn’t have the glitches since it didn’t get sent, just directly recorded.

Well I think Mercedes might want to plan running more than 3 engines anyway from the start of the season given their power advantage. "IF" overtaking does get easier, as expected, then a 5 place grid penalty for changing just the ICE can be recovered in the first 5 laps of the race.

Honestly, the grid penalties are so light, if I'm Merc or RB, build 8-10 engines and just plan on 2-3 races out of each engine. Lewis and Max can easily go from 6-8 to a podium finish if their engines are at 100% power while others are 6 races deep on an engine. Cost caps don't apply to engines and it's not like either team has to worry about money constraints in that case.

Fun fact, Mercedes engine has always had a higher performance ceiling at the cost of reliability. The banned engine modes of 2020 adversely affected them as they were forced to run similar modes in both quali and the race. In the past they'd use strat 2 (party mode) for quali, then switch to strat 5 for the race. Operating in lower (ICE) mode reduced the engines duty cycle, extending it's useable life. However, the redbull challenged meant that wasn't possible.
The engine swaps weren't primarily for performance but reliability. Hamilton's 2nd PU prematurely died in zandvoort. As did bottas' (big end bearing failure).
Also worth noting Hamilton ran the turkey engine in Qatar, where he enjoyed the largest dry weather quali advantage of the entire season. Meaning, mercedes found a setup break through for the final races. Most likely an increased rake, allowing more rear downforce.

Could it be the damping.. maybe that's what acts as a "pseudo/quasi-actuating suspension.." I highly doubt they'd have messed with the rake too much with a longer wheel base.. that would be how you end up with SF90 like slingshot oversteer.. perhaps idk. What I'd like to know is how the floor and wing developed from mid to end of season, I mean supposedly they did nothing, but if they were able to change the design of the rear then maybe that's how they managed to get extra performance.

Basically my thought as well. Def not take the penalties out, but make the penalties so severe that deliberate "overclocking" of the engine with the idea to get less life out of them and swap more engines in over the season becomes absolutely unattractive. The going system that penalties for an engine swap become less severe the more engines you swap is absurd. First one over the limit should already set you back (the 10 positions seem ok), afterwards it should be automatic end of the grid for the next one and maybe even every additional one with a time penalty added to that as well!? Like you get on your third extra engine - you start end of the grid and automatically get a 10 (or more) second time penalty!? Increasing from that point on... Using added engines needs to be so prohibitive that the idea comes not even to mind. As it is, it is an invitation to do so - if you have a strong power unit. Alternatively hit the teams with a massive financial fine for each additional engine (no peanuts, sth like $1 to 5 million from the 5th engine on, for example).

Guys (here in the replies to original post), why do you think the rules are too strict already? There’s both a budget reason and a sustainability reason for limiting the number of engines. If a manufacturer can’t handle that, they should just work harder on that part. Teams will always look for the limit of performance so no matter how many engines you allow, they will always think it’s at least one too few for them.

  • @olivialambert4124
    @olivialambert4124 2 роки тому +24

It seems like everything the FIA does backfires. Drivers have only a limited number of overtakes based around the extreme engine limits. That's due to the engines being so expensive that teams can only afford a few. That's due to the ridiculous engine specifications they refuse to fix, which caused a mass exodus of engine manufacturers and left every single season stale since their introduction (with the exception of last year). They seem to think that they can prescribe everything, and anything which doesn't work simply needs more rules. As excited as I am for next year given a lot of their fixes mirror my suggestions before even 2017, part of me is worried given the FIA's history on changes over the past decade.

That is generally what happens when you start regulating stuff. The more fences you put up the more valuable it is to be the one to get on the other side of the fence. Without there regulations there would be a much more gradual curve in performance between teams. It's like speedrunning a computergame, look for hacks and shortcuts instead of just good engineering.

In a way, yes. But don't forget, that applies to all teams. So, the average power-loss of the engines causes no advantage to any team, as long as you don't start smart ass BS like Mercedes. Ideas how to prevent it I voiced a couple times further up.

    • @olivialambert4124
      @olivialambert4124 2 роки тому

@@SvenVoelk Thats why I used other examples. It applies to all teams equally that they're paying ridiculous amounts of money for each engine too, but teams like Williams are feeling it a lot more than teams like Ferrari. It applies all engine manufacturers that they don't want to start hiring jet engine specific personnel and learn that engineering, but the very few remaining have to work within those rules (and be forced to sell engines to teams they don't want to touch equally).
All of these problems were started by poor FIA decisions, and all of them have been remedied by poor FIA decisions which almost always backfire and need more rules to cover that. Most of them could be very easily fixed by simply accepting that they failed and stop pushing on what didn't work.
As an aside, we're already seeing cost caps starting to falter before they've even started. Teams are now making massive amounts of money now they can't spend it. Now the grid is looking to expand far beyond what was hoped and the FIA is turning them down. So teams are being bought away from groups who care about the racing towards groups who simply have stacks of money as its the only way to get this money making entity. Lets see where this goes, maybe they will ban innovation to appeal to the financials and turn it into the new LMP.

Let's say you have to use an entire new power unit and gear box beyond the allowed, and the power unit results in 200m of penalty, and the gearbox 100m, that would mean that you start 300m behind the entire field!
Hell, you could even make it so harsh that drivers, teams or even both could lose points in the championship for going above the allowed engines. Rye "spicy" reminded me a bit of the stories of Jos the Boss (with the Karting team he was running) buying 10 engines, finding the best on dynos, then testing part combinations from the best in a new build to bet the best bits & best output from all 10 in a single unit, then get that homologated & sealed/tagged.
All parts are in theory the same & within tolerances allowed in the regs, but with anything you get minor differences adding up. You often randomly get 1 engine that puts out more power, so looking for those ‘special’ units & putting all the best parts together makes a lot of sense.
If those karting stories are true, it’s half awesome engineering approach/show the determination Jos has, and half sad that it reduces the chances of those who can’t afford 10 engines.
I’m assuming the top teams already do that kind of thing for their units, but there’s always a chance they stumbled on a peach of an engine through random differences in tolerances, along side the fact they were just running the thing harder for the limited number of races.

Great analysis by Scarbs! Mercedes very cleverly exploited (and may continue to exploit) a loophole in the budget cap regulations. But it's still a mystey why Mercedes experienced more wear on their ICE than any other manufacturer even before they started to run them a whole lot more aggressively.
However, I disagree with Scarbs on the hardware of the ICE staying pretty much the same. We already know that Renault and in particular Ferrari are going to make big changes to the architecture of their combustion engines and we don't know what Mercedes and RB/Honda might've done in that respect.
The adaptation to E10 fuel might not be as simple as it looks at first glance, because Ethanol-based fuel has different cooling characteristics compared to conventional fuel. In an ideal scenario the manufacturers could use the better cooling effect of Ethanol to run the engines at a lower operating temperature and thus regaining a little bit of power. This could also have a positive impact on aerodynamics by reducing the size of cooling intakes required.

Tell us more about the games that could be played with the engine count penalty regulations. For example, could teams run one engine at Bahrain, a second at Saudi Arabia, a third at Australia, a fourth (with a penalty) at Italy, a fifth (with another penalty) at Miami, and then have five in their pool (with penalties under their belt) for the rest of the season?

As far as I can tell, yes. Merc actually did that with the spicy engine when they used it for Brazil but didn't need it in Qatar and went back to an old engine. So, at least from what I can tell, they could just run 7 engines 3 races apiece assuming a 21 race season and just take those 5-place penalties after starting at the back of the grid the first time they do it.

You know the rules are there to push teams to be more sustainable (at least that's what the FIA and FOM say). So less engines thrown in the bin basically, don't know why the 4th is 10 place grid-drop and the 5th is only 5 places tho (all extra should carry a heavier or similar penalty to the 4th).

Mercedes was not only "changing engine mode" during the races it used an overpowered engine on Hamilton and on Bottas tests, they also changed a few parts inside the motor and it was a few hundred grams heavier than the original spec in the first half of the year. For me that was an ilegal upgrade and they circumvented the freezing.

My issue is the grid penalty system when changing the engine. 1st time getting a 10 place grid penalty is acceptable, but changing the engine a 2nd time only gives you a 5 place grid penalty? This is the reason why engine swaps will be abused as 5 place grid penalties are nothing compared to the engine advantage you get. The ruling should be 10 place grid penalty 1st time, 15 place grid penalty 2nd time and every additional engine change should be a 20 place grid penalty. It baffles me how the FIA didn’t learn from last year.

I have a doubt. From the beginning of the season, the engine had to have the same configuration. This means that the thermal part is unchanged. To get out, with the same parts more power means to use more fuel than before. I don't think Mercedes drove his engine under the max. potential before Brazil. If they did not force the engine to the designed limit, it would have been seen that they did not consume all the fuel they were allowed to consume. I don't remember talking about it, and I don't think it would have been overlooked if it had been noticed. So the super engine did not increase in power at the thermal part. Now the spicy part is seen to be in the electric area and the fact that the FIA has introduced a new sensor for 2022 seems to confirm this. So in 2022 the Mercedes engine will no longer be so spicy.

All teams run their engines under maximum potential, to make them last to avoid the penalty when having to replace the engine. All teams also run less fuel then the maximum, giving the mercs the option just just take more fuel (as long as it doesn't exceed the maximum of 110 kilograms). The ceiling of the Mercs engine is so high that, in combination with the extra sprint race they could absorb the penalty. It's just simple math freeski919 said it perfectly in his comment, "Mercedes had essentially created the engine undercut. It's a strategy that plays out over races, instead of tyre undercuts which play out over laps."

That way you would open the door to constant rebuilding of the engines between races. Not the general idea. The engines are supposed to have a balance between power and reliability. Hence (like last season) they should last roughly 7 race weekends. I think it is also an issue of allowing the smaller teams with lesser budgets to even stay competitive. An 'overhaul' of a F1 engine is still a very expensive operation.

Another factor popped up in my head: I don't know the exact PU rules for this kind of engine change, but changing the engine could mean changing software settings (engine mode) regarding the new PU. So, this engine change could not only mean a new physical part of the engine, it could mean playing with software settings.
    Just a thought! 🤔
