As Dr. Spengler said, "Print is dead." Newspapers in my area went from 25 cents for the dailies to 50 cents and 75 cents for the Sunday paper to $1, to eventually $1.25. And now the paper folded.
The Venkman stage in the museum is the hardest part. The unlimited ghost traps are your best friend in those stages. It also helps if you take your time and don't rush forward because there are so many enemies that come at you as you advance forward.
Nostalgia galore :) i grew up with this game, however i always used to beat it with the Game Genie.... still have the game, and actually feel like playing it again sometime soon because of this video...
Bart vs. the Space Mutants, Ghostbusters II, and also Swamp Thing (which they played recently) were all developed by Imagineering Inc. As you can tell, they love reusing their sound assets.
wow, I just rewatched this video, had the same thought, searched the web to find out what game this sound was from, and realized I made this comment a year ago.
"The Making of an AVGN Episode" is one of my favorite episodes ever. It's kind of sad to see how little views it gets compared to the other stuff. I'd watch the shit out of one showing Mike's process.
I've never played this, but just by watching this video, I've noticed several similarities between this game and Bart Vs. The Space Mutants. Mainly, in how some of the enemies move up and down or bounce in from the side, and that weird sound it makes when you get (or shoot) an item. Has this ever been mentioned, or even noticed before?
I remember playing this as a kid and completing it. But looking at it now as you are struggling on some of these parts I cannot believe I used to beat this game on a regular basis. I do not remember using those traps, I don't think I knew about them as a child.
I think the reason people dislike it is because it's simplicity. As you said the gameplay reminds me of old Atari games and this is simply not what most people wanted when the NES came out. I'm just speculating here.
When i was a kid, i was got to the statue of liberty levels, and i was convinced there was no actual end to the game. Never could get past those. Nice job Boot-C
The Statue of Liberty bonus stage always reminded me of the bonus stage in Jaws where you drop bombs on jelly fish. Just the patterns and white enemies really connect the two for me.
One of the few games i had between my hands that i didn't finish. I can remember the statue of liberty level, which was terrible it was... don't know, maybe 23 years ago :D
I couldn't ever get as far as they did, I wonder if theres any talk about a new Ghostbusters game. it be cool to see it on an Oculus rift, youd trap all the ghosts and you can fight them with the original Ghostbusters.
Do anyone else notice what appears to be the recycled sound from Bart Vs The Space Mutants? like in this game when you grab or touch an item it's sounds like the sound that kicks in when Bart successfully sprays an item.
Always had trouble with the second car scene, and when I could beat that, had a real hard time with the statue of liberty going through the city, I'd pretty much be out of lives at that point. Only game genie got me to the end. I still think it's a good game.
You cinemassacre guys are all some great retro players. I mean I grew up in that era too and I was completing games that were considered tough but years of modern games holding my hand have ruined muh mad skillz.
God I would love to see someone hack this rom to make it a truly awesome game. All you'd really need to do is remap the A and B buttons, map a pause feature to the SELECT button, reverse the side-scrolling levels to scroll left-to-right, and remove that little creature that follows you and limits your time.
It's slime they are shooting out of the gun. They had did that in the movie when they reversed the slime from having negative properties to positive ones. I had thought the same thing when i was a kud but figured it out upon revisiting the movie itself.
Ike Foxbrush Yup, a lot were. I still stand by what I said about Fester's Quest, I've tried many times, both as a child and an adult, and my thumb just starts to hurt after a while. Turbo is necessary
Kinaldio I was really just kidding and don't know if the the controllers were pushed onto the market, but the games were intentionally hard with lots of button mashing. I think that was a tradition from arcade games which were often very difficult so players would buy more continues. Personally I'd also use a turbo controller if a game is more fun to play with.
i agree with mike about having a level select feature. Who really plays these games for the _story?_ More non-linear platformers for the NES would have been awesome.
This game got me so mad as a kid my mom took my NES away for a week because I was getting so mad at the game I could not help it back then it was really hard I want to play it now again since I am getting the feeling that games today are way more easier than games back in the old days. I play new games today and sometimes I feel like even though games back then may have sucked at least they were a challenge to play made you want to beat it real bad as for games today they may look good but I kind of find it hard to even want to finish most new games today.
Still better than Ghostbusters remake.
so true
misogynist pig!!!
a tainted chipotle burrito is.....a dirty diaper is.....list goes on and on
did you see the movie yet?
i sexually identify as a proton pack and you are triggering me stop
50 cents for a newspaper? What a time to be alive!
newspapers here are like 25p
As Dr. Spengler said, "Print is dead." Newspapers in my area went from 25 cents for the dailies to 50 cents and 75 cents for the Sunday paper to $1, to eventually $1.25. And now the paper folded.
*****
paper with news on it
It's like 1,2€ nowadays in Spain
I'll Take Eight!
YOU COULD USE ECTO TRAPS?! OMG! I wasted countless weekends as a kid because i did not know this til now. FML
I remember being so bad at this game as a kid. It aggravated me so much. Never even saw half of these levels haha.
Man, you guys are making this look like so much fun! Guess it's time to blow the dust off my cartridge and give this a go! :3
It's a trap! You'll most likely throw a tantrum over this game.
Ali Kuko
Haha, this is more than likely true!
+Rabbit Plays Games You sound fun :) I'll check some of your vids out.
Spoony Spooner
Haha, thanks! I'm pretty laid back. ^^ Can't sweat the small stuff, y'know? :3
The Venkman stage in the museum is the hardest part.
The unlimited ghost traps are your best friend in those stages.
It also helps if you take your time and don't rush forward because there are so many enemies that come at you as you advance forward.
I used to play this game with my grandma way back in the day! Thanks for bringing back some awesome memories guys!
Gherstbersters!!!
Johnny, quit being a no good D.
+Johnny NoGooD chill
Conglaturations.
+ganymedeIV4 lol love that bit in that episode.
+ganymedeIV4 BUEEEE SEVUNTEEEYNE BAAAUWMRR!
2:18"Is that Kool-Aid, gimme the Kool-Aid" - James Rolfe
I, Vigo, The sorrow of Moldavia approve this video.
You are weak compared to the might of the CHAOS God of Death and Disease, I shall summon forth the wrath of the Grand Father upon thee.
Weren't you also Vigo The Butch?
"I await the word of Vigo." *checks watch* LOL
I'mma blast you with my Slime Blower if you try anything funny
Nostalgia galore :)
i grew up with this game, however i always used to beat it with the Game Genie....
still have the game, and actually feel like playing it again sometime soon because of this video...
"Hey, she's tough. She's a harbor chick!" Classic.
Boosty are so peaceful and calm when he talk. This is so nice!
God, I really miss playing video games.
Thank you for all the videos, Cinemassacre!
it looks like the ghostbusters are having a bukkake session with the painting
I'd rather watch this video in theaters than Ghostbusters 3
You mean Dustbusters? There is no Ghostbusters 3.
Ghostbusters 3 was the 2009 game. Harold Ramis voice acted on that one.
+Netwirq2 He also wrote the story for said game!
Yea he did also. We'll there you go Ghostbusters 3 was actually the 2009 videogame. :)
Oh there is! Ghostbusters - The video game. That's Ghostbusters 3. I accept it as GB3 at least.
...but, the spider, though?
THAT SOUND EFFECT! THAT BOUNCING ENEMY!!!
This is a modified Simpsons Bart vs The Space Mutants game!!!!!!!
Bart vs. the Space Mutants, Ghostbusters II, and also Swamp Thing (which they played recently) were all developed by Imagineering Inc. As you can tell, they love reusing their sound assets.
Excellent video! :D
I can hear Bart vs Space Mutants sound effects and those bouncing coins... nightmares :D
wow, I just rewatched this video, had the same thought, searched the web to find out what game this sound was from, and realized I made this comment a year ago.
Mike, could you do a video about your editing process sometime? Let us see a glimpse of all that hard work you put in every week!
that would be pretty interesting to see
agreed
This kind of editing isn't really that hard.
"The Making of an AVGN Episode" is one of my favorite episodes ever. It's kind of sad to see how little views it gets compared to the other stuff. I'd watch the shit out of one showing Mike's process.
+Jason Demakis I don't watch it on youtube lol. I have volumes 1 to 7, so I just watch it on the DVD.
I like the idea with the invincible spider thing there in the beginning, like a time limit with a twist.
Thanks so much for the play through, I have never got past the central park driving level myself. Love the game but its difficult.
both hated and loved this game when I was younger. Also I beat it. great memories, thanks.

Loved this game as a kid and I still do.
I think the reason people dislike it is because it's simplicity. As you said the gameplay reminds me of old Atari games and this is simply not what most people wanted when the NES came out. I'm just speculating here.
I liked this game as a kid and I still like it.
That sound effect... this had to have been made by the same people that did Bart VS. The Space Mutants
So happy to see this game beat! Had so much problem playing it as a kid. :)
One of my all time favs too! Love the car levels.
I believe the song "Higher and Higher" from GB2 was performed by Howard Huntsberry
I've been playing the wii one again (aka Ghostbusters 3) so this is good timing
Wow. You guys are making me feel like a kid again
The GB game that was released a couple of years ago on ps3/xbox did justice to the franchise.
The Statue of Liberty part of the game is reminiscent of the game called 'A.E.' by Broderbund.
That end stage is crazy.
Fighting powerful ghosts, unable to deal with a little spider!
One of the few games i had between my hands that i didn't finish.
I can remember the statue of liberty level, which was terrible
it was... don't know, maybe 23 years ago :D
Mike he's shooting that positively-charged slime canon, the one they coat the Statue of Liberty with and use to kill Vigor.
one of my faves as a kid. Came so close to beating it. It was so hard!
Same here; don't think my sister and I managed to get past the part where you're playing as the statue of liberty.
I couldn't ever get as far as they did, I wonder if theres any talk about a new Ghostbusters game. it be cool to see it on an Oculus rift, youd trap all the ghosts and you can fight them with the original Ghostbusters.
Now we just need New Ghostbusters 2.
Dang, I miss watching you guys play games together.
Nice..the only thing i can think of the whole review long was the theme song for Ducktales. :D
Do anyone else notice what appears to be the recycled sound from Bart Vs The Space Mutants? like in this game when you grab or touch an item it's sounds like the sound that kicks in when Bart successfully sprays an item.
Squash the beef !
Always had trouble with the second car scene, and when I could beat that, had a real hard time with the statue of liberty going through the city, I'd pretty much be out of lives at that point. Only game genie got me to the end. I still think it's a good game.
New Ghostbusters 2 was one of the best games on NES
You cinemassacre guys are all some great retro players. I mean I grew up in that era too and I was completing games that were considered tough but years of modern games holding my hand have ruined muh mad skillz.
The statue of liberty segment reminded me of "Satan's Hollow".
God I would love to see someone hack this rom to make it a truly awesome game. All you'd really need to do is remap the A and B buttons, map a pause feature to the SELECT button, reverse the side-scrolling levels to scroll left-to-right, and remove that little creature that follows you and limits your time.
anyone else feel like cinemassacre is the view askew of video games? why are these jersey boys so damn loveable??
11:39 mike had the same reaction I had to that move
nice one man.. i wanted you to play this a long time algo..
It would be good to see you guys play New Ghostbusters 2
You can push start or select one I can't remember and drop a ghost trap
"New Ghostbusters 2" on NES is much, much, much better and even one of my very favorite NES games.
4:48 you had compared that stage to Centipede and Space invaders but its more like Galaga
Mike Matei looks like a young John Leguizamo
The Ecto-1 sequence reminds me of Moon Patrol.
gotta use more traps (your train station beginning exemplifies this). Overall good run for having your attention divided.
Game design is up for debate, but the sprite work in here is amazing.
Have they never watched the movie, they don't even know about the goo gun.
lolya i c what you mean i thinkthey were going for the slime gun they hosed yonosh with
I always preferred the Slime Blower over the Proton Pack. It feels nice to blast ghosts with slime
You guys should play the NEW Ghostbusters 2 game by Hal Laboratories.
It's slime they are shooting out of the gun. They had did that in the movie when they reversed the slime from having negative properties to positive ones. I had thought the same thing when i was a kud but figured it out upon revisiting the movie itself.
I prefer the New Ghostbusters II for the NES and Game Boy; the latter is my favourite version. I played that game everywhere I went.
NES version never came out in the USA. We got this shitty game instead.
I had no idea there were 2 versions of the NES game back then. You have my sympathy.
Great job keep up the good work
I actually can't wait to see the new Ghostbusters movie.
Looks like it uses the same engine and sound effects as Bart vs the space mutants.
It would be great to see you guys play through Kenseiden on the master system. My favorite on that system!
Anyone else notice this borrows the same sound effects from Bart vs. the Space mutants?
word
Not just sounds, they've used the same game engine and the driving stages are exactly the same as the skateboard stage.
This came out before Bart vs. Space Mutants.
I'd be morally against turbo controllers, if the game is designed that way, that's the way you gotta do it.
I agree with that too, but I have to make an exception for Fester's Quest. There's no fucking way anyone can beat that without a turbo controller
Games were actually designed that way so people would buy turbo controllers ;)
Ike Foxbrush Yup, a lot were. I still stand by what I said about Fester's Quest, I've tried many times, both as a child and an adult, and my thumb just starts to hurt after a while. Turbo is necessary
Kinaldio
I was really just kidding and don't know if the the controllers were pushed onto the market, but the games were intentionally hard with lots of button mashing. I think that was a tradition from arcade games which were often very difficult so players would buy more continues. Personally I'd also use a turbo controller if a game is more fun to play with.
Hah.. some sound effects recycled from Bart Simpson vs the Space Mutants!
"Hey fellas, we're in the wrong game."
That Three Stooges game was awful.
i agree with mike about having a level select feature. Who really plays these games for the _story?_ More non-linear platformers for the NES would have been awesome.
Omg the ending was stressing me out so bad lol
7 000 views. Ohmy, I've never been so early on Cinemassacre video
I rented this many times as a kid, never managed to beat that final level. Hard game for sure.
so much nostalgia
What happens if you jump over the spider?
All life as you know it ceases to exist
Damn it! I LOVE this game !!!
The Real Ghostbusters for Commodore 64 was were it was at. 2 player too.
You should play co-op in New ghostbursters 2 for the NES :) A very fun game.
I'm really good at ctr for ps1 now because as a kid i beat the game without power sliding.
what parts of this game would you chop up to RNG?
Main song should have been On Our Own.
But can you play ernie hudson
I tried playing this game. Those driving sections were the dirt worst. I could not get past those jumps.
I'm playing the Lego dimensions pack while watching this
Love this game
Maybe they were going for the positive charged slime instead of the proton pack. Granted it should be purple slime.
The sound effects are very Bart Vs. the Space Mutants.
You guys are so cool.
Play the Ghostbusters PS3/360 Game
they have
i didnt realise
So Mike do you like it now and would you try it?
Something like the snes Donkey Kong games would be good for this series since you can switch players mid-level and do some co-op stuff.
This game got me so mad as a kid my mom took my NES away for a week because I was getting so mad at the game I could not help it back then it was really hard I want to play it now again since I am getting the feeling that games today are way more easier than games back in the old days.
