Lauren Riley Would you speculate that people from the previous generations tend to be specialists in certain video games? I have heard of a famous Japanese voice actress who only played Arkanoid, a kind of breakout games, and also kicked ass in it.
I can make that too quite easy actualy the only problem I have though is that I finish these kinds of levels roughly 1 out of 2 and when you lose 1 you getturned back to 20. 20 itself though isnt that hard for me and james just isnt that good at it yet he messes up so much that he needs to keep cleaning it up while I hardly have to do that
It's funny...James and Mike are almost 40 years old but I think of them as barely over 20. They do not strike me as 40 year olds in any capacity. They look and act like teenagers. Anyone else think of them as college kids?
I can beat level 20 on fast - not consistently, though. A little bad virus placement or a misplaced capsule early in the game and it's all over. If you can succeed in breaking through the top layers the rest usually isn't too tough - the main problem is the drop speed of the pills increases over time, so if it takes you too long to clear the board, it gets more difficult, even uncontrollable. For me Dr. Mario was the game that proved "Tetris Clones" could actually be better than tetris. I used to play it on Game Boy and NES a lot. I played the Wii version online a lot as well: Dr. Mario player-versus-player can be pretty brutal: When a player gets a combo, the other player gets junk dropped onto their board... Which is par for the course for a lot of Tetris-like games, but the thing with Dr. Mario is that the junk drops very slowly. So you can set off a combo, forcing the other player to wait several seconds for the junk to drop - and while that happens, you can set off another combo. If you keep it up, the other player will barely have an opportunity to respond.
i once got really good at a flashgame that was a tetris clone witht one major change. that being that the pieces didn't move one square per button press, instead they moved freely and they didn't snap in place so if you where to put an L piece with the long end pointing down or you build something too top heavy it could fall over and fuck everything up.
+Orbrun AVGN is a Character of James Rolfe, an over-exaggerated extent of his personality, stemming from childhood... It's a bit different than Daniel Day-Lewis, a professional Actor, who goes to extreme measures to get into character.
He's done that in his episodes. Zelda II, Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, Mario 3 Ghosts and Goblins, Ninja Gaiden and Ducktales. He even reviewed AVGN games. These games are good, but may have flaws and/or harsh difficulties.
Drayenlol I think playing 2P on level 7 low speed is the best for consecutive matches :). Too little junk the rounds are over way too quick, too much and they drag on and the Coke back factor doesn't play a strong enough part.
Stacking the pill on end helps sometimes when you have a 2 color pill. I saw many times where James added to the problem when he could have just stacked the pill vertically because the 4 below it were disappearing anyway and the other color matched what was below. This is my favorite puzzle game of all time.
I remember barely failing Level 24 as a kid, and then beating Level 24 or 25 as a young teen and seeing the end. One of my most cherished memories. None of my friends and family can even come close to challenging me at this game, haha. This was all on the N64. Against friends, I play on Level 17 and they play on Level 4 or 5 and I still win most of the time. :) Being a master of chains, setups, and horizontal and vertical clears is very important, as well as speed and instantly knowing what to do with the next piece as you're about to gain control of it.
Oh I wanna play this game again! It's been a long time since I played it. I played the hell out of this game on my old NES when it first came out. Helped me with my Puzzle Fighter career later in life, lol! XD
Hey James and Mike this is one of the small handful of games that I can honestly say that I am a beast at. At one time while I was in practice I could clear 20/High once out every 10 or so attempts. If you want to practice level 21 maybe you could use an emulator and save state after beating level 20. Then just load state after each attempt. And from a self-proclaimed Dr Mario master, I will admit that you were right: the luck of the draw with regards to initial virus layout and pill progression plays a huge role in your ability to clear the stage. Lastly, I'm afraid I'm of no help when it comes to solving the mystery of the highest level; I never managed to clear level 22! Pro tips: 1.) focus on the edges first and work your way towards the middle for the first phase of the stage 2.) If given the option, ALWAYS choose the horizontal orientation rather than the vertical position Thanks for yet another amazing video and the opportunity to escape real life and all the stress and chaos associated with it for a short while!
I loved this game. If I remember correctly, after beating 20, 25, 30 you get different cut scenes. Each having a different flying object. I don't remember how far I made it. And yes, I was yelling at my TV while watching this literally shouting, "what are you doing!" Great throwback video!
"My advice is not to fuck up". Wow, Mike, thanks a lot! Now I can use that advice not just in Dr Mario but in my whole life! Very wise words, man, very wise.
Oh man, when I was in the military, there were a couple people in my unit that were really good at this game...like, insanely good at it. They would get into screaming matches over it, and I swear it was going to come to blows. Good memories:)
8:21: "My advice...umm, you know, not that I'm the best person to give advice because you're better at this than I am, but...my advice would be to...not fuck up." :D
We used to have a little Tetris handheld game in the house that the whole family was really into. We all played it a lot and it became really competitive over who could get the most lines starting from the beginning. I thought I was big bad Dad because I was in the zone one day and got over 700 lines and it just blew everyone else away. Two days later my stepson came running in from his room and had over 1000. So much for big bad Dad. LOL
This game has the distinction of being one of a few games to start off more difficult but gets easier as you play on, potentially (more viruses, little room to maneuver the pills). That was one of the things that I found so addictive as a kid. I always wanted to get good enough at the game for it to start getting a little easier.
The key to getting good at Dr Mario is practicing on the high levels for a while and then starting on the lower levels and then build up to the high levels. That way you trick yourself into playing better by getting bored with lower levels and eventually instinct will kick in and the pieces will just seem to fall into place. The key is not to overthink it.
'My advice would be to not f@#% up.' Great advice Mike. Thanks to you I'm always shouting 'F#$% em up!! F#$% em up!!' In my head during difficult boss battles. And you know what? It works!
every one else has commented, so shall I, the soundtrack to this game is legendary, I had a tone of games on the original gameboy, I say this because of emulators, and Dr Mario had one of the greatest soundtracks, think of how much possessing power the gameboy had and they where able to do what they did with it, summed up in one word......awesome, the only game that matched it for me was teenage mutant ninja turtles.... that game was the shit for handhelds.., I loved gamegear for colour, graphics etc., but soundtrack....this was a game changer
I remember when my grandparents got this for their Gameboy (yes, they actually a Gameboy). Everyone in the family wanted to play it as well as Tetris. My parents later got me a copy of Dr. Mario for my Gameboy so that way we would have a second copy of the game when we went to visit my grandparents. I never made it very far into the game, but holy shit did it get harder on the later levels. Like with Tetris, you were far past fuck when you made a mistake early on in the level. Other than that, the game is still fun (and I still have my copies of both Dr. Mario and Tetris, as well as other Gameboy games).
This is the only video game my Grandfather plays, and has been playing for virtually my entire life. He plays level 20 on HI speed, over and over without losing. The levels stop going at 24 and repeat itself.
Tetris created one of the most addictive game designs ever. Watching this really makes me want to give it another go, been so long since I played Soviet Russia's most famous creation.
The Tetris/Dr. Mario game on SNES is just those two separate games remade in 16 bit and put on one cartridge. There is a mode that has you jumping from one game to the other, but other than that, it's the same as playing Tetris and Dr. Mario on NES. Though in my opinion, it's one of the definitive ways to play those games.
as a kid i had the GBA version of this game, and i loved it. later i got the DSi version and was so addicted to it. i would start at level 20 and just see how long i could go. my record was level 24; 4 consecutive level 20 difficulty completions. im damn proud of it.
One trick to beating this that I saw James neglect a ton of is not aligning the split color pills vertically. If you have a blue you're clearing piled on top of a yellow, and you have a yellow and blue pill, drop it vertically so the yellow bit falls onto the yellow pile when you're done. That and a lot more horizontal clears make this way easier than they're implying with this video
This was one of the last games in my collection that I had to beat and one of the hardest. I managed to beat level 20 on high speed, but it wasn't as hard as level 19. I've been trying to beat it, on and off, for the past few month, and finally beat it back in February. With my computer broke, I had more time dedicated to beating harder games in my collections, such as Dr. Mario. Belive me, at these high speeds you need zen like concentration, focus, and patience. With it being winter, work being slow and nothing to do outside, that also helped in giving me time to focus on the game, so much focus in fact, when I looked at the clock I realized I spent the whole day just playing the game. I went to sleep and played again the next day and finally level 19, after that I contemplated on stopping for the day, but no, I was ''in-the-zone'', I couldn't stop while I'm this good, if I came back the next day my skill wouldn't be focused. So I continued with level 20, and it only took 3-5 attempts to beat it. And then you get the ending where you see the viruses are actually aliens and get picked up by their mothership and go to their home planet... Not since Ecco the Dolphin have I seen a game with a crazy reveal later in the game.
I had the Tetris & Dr. Mario SNES game. I remember one of the music tracks for Mixed Match was a real ear-worm. You guys ought to play that against each other on camera. Best two out of three so we can hear all of the different music!
I remember this game, and I've beat level 20 a long time ago, and it was the only time I remember playing it on the NES. I also remember the Game Boy version which was an NES port that I beat level 20 and the ending was completely different.
Tetris & Dr. Mario on SNES would be a perfect game for you guys to play on here. It has an amazing multiplayer mode that combines Tetris and Dr. Mario.
I always imagined that game over in Dr.Mario would mean Mario overdosed his patient, he looses his license and is forced to become a plumber.
Considering that he throws pills like confetti...
Dr. Mario is now officially canon
Similar to Harold shipman then
12:21 That noise signals that you've successfully killed an entire color of virus. In this instance, James killed the last of the blue viruses.
I think James Rolfe's inner "AVGN" is showing when he messes up and starts cursing.
Justin Hill yup
His alter ego will soon split into a separate entity
James is like the Incredible Hulk
Justin Hill - Duh!
Yet another NES game with kick ass music.
Gyromite Yep Hirokazu Hip Tanaka, same guy who wrote music for StackUp, Gyromite, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Land as well as Mario Paint and who could forget Earthbound with Keichi Suzuki.
Always thought that it sound like gummi bears cartoon.
Gyromite hells yes best music ever
branaa09 wow...all that great shit from one guy.. and he did Gyromite too? huh... I should probably know that before I go naming myself Gyromite
jim b the music on vs mode when you win sounds like a take on rhythm of the rain by the cascades
The music that plays when you lose is terrifying late at nite when you're a kid.
It is level 25. 25 repeats after that. My father could make it. This was the only video game he played outside of punch out every once in a while.
Lauren Riley Funny! This is the only game my mother played. She got so good at it she actually beat level 20 at high speed once.
Lauren Riley Would you speculate that people from the previous generations tend to be specialists in certain video games? I have heard of a famous Japanese voice actress who only played Arkanoid, a kind of breakout games, and also kicked ass in it.
Lauren Riley All levels above 20 have the same number of viruses as 20, the counter actually never makes it to 25, it just repeats 24.
I can make that too quite easy actualy the only problem I have though is that I finish these kinds of levels roughly 1 out of 2 and when you lose 1 you getturned back to 20. 20 itself though isnt that hard for me and james just isnt that good at it yet he messes up so much that he needs to keep cleaning it up while I hardly have to do that
Hahahahah somebody else knows this too.... I never saw no level 25 but 24 repeats.
Imagine playing this with the power glove or u force
At that point you may as well just use the Power Glove to punch the cartridge and hope it corrupts in a way that makes it easier
you are the devil
the devil lets you play this on virtua boy :)
The devil says to you: play Jekyll and Mr. Hyde bwahahahahaha
NachuelasWTF Gamer yeah on virtual boy while its strapped to ur face
Take a shot every time Mike says "You're better at this than I am."
I'm Better Than you Are so I Should Do The Review.-
KILLER KONG ON THE ZX SPECTRUM
Yeah Mike's turning into an asshole about that.
NOPE!
It's funny...James and Mike are almost 40 years old but I think of them as barely over 20. They do not strike me as 40 year olds in any capacity. They look and act like teenagers. Anyone else think of them as college kids?
Nick P that's why I like them. I'm only 32 but seeing these dudes makes me feel fine about never growing up. Never grow up kids!
Eh...mid-30s. They're not that old.
"My name is Kuwabatake Sanjuro (30-year-old-Mulberry-Field)... but I'm almost 40."
Mike: "My advice is do not fuck up"
James: "Wow, do not fuck up? I never though that would work. Thanks, Mike."
"My advice would be to not fuck up". Applicable to all situations Mike 😂
My mom was a wizard at Tetris. I used to get her to beat level 9 of B-Type so I could see all the Nintendo characters playing music.
That "fucking shit!" sounded like young James lol.
プレオ・ニック that "fucking shit" warmed my heart.
プレオ・ニック that "fucking shit" was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Tetris Attack / Panel de Pon / Puzzle League (etc...) is another amazing versus puzzler
I like Kirby's Avalanche on SNES. Similar to Dr. Mario, but not the same. Ditto Tetris Attack.
Novel, much? 🙄🙄
Ahhh, the memories! I used to love watching my dad play this, he was amazing at this, and Tetris.
11:30 As someone who is good at Dr. Mario, I can confirm for you all that this DOES drive me crazy.
It’s making me mental...
You have gameplay?
It's nice to see AVGN pissed off at a game that's not shit.
he is out of character :/
+Orbrun yes he is. This is how AVGN videos are born.
+Orbrun AVGN is a Character of James Rolfe, an over-exaggerated extent of his personality, stemming from childhood... It's a bit different than Daniel Day-Lewis, a professional Actor, who goes to extreme measures to get into character.
Watch him play SNES Ghosts and Goblins or outtakes from the Alien 3 video. That's inner rage.
He's done that in his episodes. Zelda II, Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, Mario 3 Ghosts and Goblins, Ninja Gaiden and Ducktales. He even reviewed AVGN games. These games are good, but may have flaws and/or harsh difficulties.
They must be just slightly changing up the patterns after level 20 because 20 and 21 both start with 84 viruses
I remember my parents playing this game literally every night. They usually played lvl17-18 though.
Hah, my dad cheated to complete starcraft's campaign missions all the time and it's pretty much the only game i've ever seen my mom play.
Drayenlol I think playing 2P on level 7 low speed is the best for consecutive matches :). Too little junk the rounds are over way too quick, too much and they drag on and the Coke back factor doesn't play a strong enough part.
The only game my grand father ever played was Dr Mario, and he was fucking good at it. He showed me the aliens cut scene once.
7:01
"I just need a fuckin red!"
No james... You killed all the dirty reds.. back in hong kong of 97.
Stacking the pill on end helps sometimes when you have a 2 color pill. I saw many times where James added to the problem when he could have just stacked the pill vertically because the 4 below it were disappearing anyway and the other color matched what was below. ''You can do it. Get those blues, maybe."
-Cuts to him losing
Mike at 8:21 "My advise would be not to fuck up"
Sound advise there Mike, well done
Beating Level 20 on high is crazy tough, but doable. You get rewarded with a UFO animation, very satisfying.
This game is actually a simulation of what it's like to be Charlie Sheen's doctor.
I remember barely failing Level 24 as a kid, and then beating Level 24 or 25 as a young teen and seeing the end. One of my most cherished memories. None of my friends and family can even come close to challenging me at this game, haha. This was all on the N64. Oh I wanna play this game again! It's been a long time since I played it. I played the hell out of this game on my old NES when it first came out. Helped me with my Puzzle Fighter career later in life, lol! XD
this brings back memories of me and my cousin playing this all night
I'm glad that you guys would highlight a puzzle game like this. They aren't the most frequent let's play choice out there. Also, PLEASE DO COLUMNS!
Damn it James, you're not thinking FOURTH DIMENSIONIALLY!
"You might get some shitty pills in the beginning..."
exactly why I didn't finish college.
12:22 "What was that noise?" That sir was the sound of a virus being eliminated!
Pro tips:
1.) focus on the edges first and work your way towards the middle for the first phase of the stage
2.) If given the option, ALWAYS choose the horizontal orientation rather than the vertical position
Thanks for yet another amazing video and the opportunity to escape real life and all the stress and chaos associated with it for a short while!
my guess is that lvl 20 just repeats. it might have more difficult patterns, but the virus count is still the same at 84 viruses.
I loved this game. If I remember correctly, after beating 20, 25, 30 you get different cut scenes. Each having a different flying object. I don't remember how far I made it. And yes, I was yelling at my TV while watching this literally shouting, "what are you doing!" Great throwback video!
My mom used to rock Dr. Mario on high speed level 20 when I was a kid. I was amazing to watch.
Man does this bring me back! I remember I played Dr Mario as a kid and raged but couldn't stop...
"My advice would be to not fuck up."
Well said Mike.
My brother was given an nes classic by me last month, and we loved dr. Mario. He's now obsessed. We spent hours every night going higher.
I really love this series, it really grows on you, and makes you feel like you are on the couch just chilling with them.
Reccaman ikr? It is like you are catching up with old friends, and just having a good time.
I admire James and Mike's zeal for classic games. There is NO WAY I would have the patience for half of what they go through!
The most intense video on UA-cam: Dr Mario!
"My advice is not to fuck up". Wow, Mike, thanks a lot! Now I can use that advice not just in Dr Mario but in my whole life! Very wise words, man, very wise.
"My advice is to not fuck up"
- Mike Matei, 2017
Oh man, when I was in the military, there were a couple people in my unit that were really good at this game...like, insanely good at it. They would get into screaming matches over it, and I swear it was going to come to blows. Good memories:)
"My advice would be to not fuck up"
Why is that so funny? 😂
Level 20 was my jam when waiting for the bus with a Game Boy. Excellent timekiller
I love that his "Oh... FUCK!" is just like when he's AVGN. Good to see there's a bit of James in AVGN after all :P
"My advice would be to not f*ck up." That's some pretty solid advice Mike. XD You hear that James? Just don't f*ck it up!
8:21: "My advice...umm, you know, not that I'm the best person to give advice because you're better at this than I am, but...my advice would be to...not fuck up." :D

@Mike 12:22 the sound / milestone is James killed all the blue viruses. See how the sound repeats at 13:01 when the yellow ones are cleared also.

That was one of the things that I found so addictive as a kid. I always wanted to get good enough at the game for it to start getting a little easier.
i've done this once in my life years ago just to say i did it. it is hard as hell. congrats on achievement.
if your man doesnt look at you the way mike looks james at james than hes not the one
"Mike looks James at james?" 🙄
I could hear the music before I even clicked on the video. Excellent.
Mike is the best life coach ever: "My advice is, don't fuck up."

James and Mike are always such great role models for friends. It would be fun if they in one episode started to get really mean to each other.
every one else has commented, so shall I, the soundtrack to this game is legendary, I had a tone of games on the original gameboy, I say this because of emulators, and Dr Mario had one of the greatest soundtracks, think of how much possessing power the gameboy had and they where able to do what they did with it, summed up in one word......awesome, the only game that matched it for me was teenage mutant ninja turtles.... that game was the shit for handhelds.., I loved gamegear for colour, graphics etc., but soundtrack....this was a game changer
That part of playing with your parents reminded me of when my mom would play Sonic Spinball with me. She always got stuck on the last table.
I remember when my grandparents got this for their Gameboy (yes, they actually a Gameboy). Everyone in the family wanted to play it as well as Tetris. This is how James prepares to film as the AVGN.
Tetris created one of the most addictive game designs ever. Watching this really makes me want to give it another go, been so long since I played Soviet Russia's most famous creation.
"Don't fuck up"
Thanks Mike that soooooo insightful
You guys gotta try Dr. Mario 64.

Play Wrecking Crew on the NES!!!
This is Mario desperately trying to find a cure for Terminal 7 to help Luigi.
My mother used to play this game a lot. Probably the only NES game she ever played.
This was the only game my parents played, when I was younger and they were better than me. Really nostalgic, especially the music.
as a kid i had the GBA version of this game, and i loved it. later i got the DSi version and was so addicted to it. i would start at level 20 and just see how long i could go. my record was level 24; 4 consecutive level 20 difficulty completions. im damn proud of it.
My grandma was insane at this game. I remember watching her at level 20 max speed.
I still prefer Dr. Wario from the Wario Ware inc. game, if only because you don't have to wait for the pills to drop after making a hit.
1:03 can hear that couch creak to hit the reset button. :D
"my advice would be to not fuck up" yeah great fucking advice mike LOL
Doctor Mario is my favorite puzzle game.
For me better than tetris.
This is one of the few games I keep checking on for a rerelease
One trick to beating this that I saw James neglect a ton of is not aligning the split color pills vertically. If you have a blue you're clearing piled on top of a yellow, and you have a yellow and blue pill, drop it vertically so the yellow bit falls onto the yellow pile when you're done.

Beating level 20 was definately an accomplishment for me!
And then you get the ending where you see the viruses are actually aliens and get picked up by their mothership and go to their home planet... Not since Ecco the Dolphin have I seen a game with a crazy reveal later in the game.
The sound effect around 12:22 happens when you kill all the viruses of a certain color :)
Mike: "My advice it's to not fuck up" XD
I had the Tetris & Dr. Mario SNES game. I remember one of the music tracks for Mixed Match was a real ear-worm. You guys ought to play that against each other on camera. Best two out of three so we can hear all of the different music!
James: I might not talk a lot but you can talk.
Mike: [oh you better fucking believe it]
When I got the NES Classic it took me 10 times to finally beat level 20 on low speed.
James has contracted the Dr. Mario Virus!
Games like this were life as a kid. If you like this, you will like Dr. Robotnik's mean bean Machine. I loved it!
I really liked this. You should make a new series where you guys train yourself in videogames. I feel like it would gain a lot of traction (:
I remember playing this game with my cousin's When I'd was a
young child. Ah........ My childhood memories!!! ^^
The only nes game that both of my parents really enjoyed playing and to be honest, they were actually very good at!
I remember this game, and I've beat level 20 a long time ago, and it was the only time I remember playing it on the NES. I also remember the Game Boy version which was an NES port that I beat level 20 and the ending was completely different.
I love watching you guys play
Tetris & Dr. Mario on SNES would be a perfect game for you guys to play on here. It has an amazing multiplayer mode that combines Tetris and Dr. Mario.
Best advise Mike could give James: "Don't fuck up."
