Hello lovelies,
Ever since I saw the movie Marie Antoinette I have been obsessed with her. When I stumbled upon the Marie Antoinette Diet book, I became fascinated with the idea of eating cake while remaining thin.
Marie Antoinette was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1755, Marie Antoinette married the future French king Louis XVI when she was just 15 years old. The young couple soon came to symbolize all of the excesses of the reviled French monarchy, and Marie Antoinette herself became the target of a great deal of vicious gossip. After the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, the royal family was forced to live under the supervision of revolutionary authorities. In 1793, the king was executed; then, Marie Antoinette was arrested and tried for trumped-up crimes against the French republic. She was convicted and sent to the guillotine on October 16, 1793.
Marie Antoinette threw lavish parties, and she had an extravagant taste in clothing and accessories. She was utterly preoccupied with material items, and she seemed to have no interest in being an actual leader.
Marie Antoinette's Diet:
Breakfast
In the book The Marie Antoinette Diet: Eat Cake and Still Lose Weight, author Karen Wheeler states that the Queen loved to start her day with a pastry with coffee or a rich hot chocolate. Marie Antoinette loved croissants and the bread she grew up within her hometown in Vienna, Austria. Her First Chambermaid, Madame Campan, said, "The only things of which she was particularly fond were her morning coffee and a sort of bread to which she had grown accustomed during her childhood in Vienna." This "sort of bread" is actually croissants, which originated in Vienna, not France. The Queen is often credited for making them popular in France.
Lunch
Her main meal of the day was her lunch. This is a very European way of eating. The Queen would eat a meal of fish or vegetables for lunch every day. Wheeler also wrote that Marie Antoinette snacked throughout the day on foods that many people would consider meals, or at least side dishes. This included things like cheese, macaroni, and vegetables cooked in cream. She wasn't going around eating chips or anything pedestrian like that.
Dinner
The Queen would have a light dinner of broth to keep her slim figure despite her affinity for sweets. For dinner, she would often eat just a broth made of leftover bones in the kitchen with vegetables and chicken or guinea fowl.
Dessert
Marie Antoinette was a huge fan of chocolate , and according to reports, she had her own chocolatier at Versailles to supply her with exactly what she wanted. She particularly loved liquid chocolate, which she drank with whipped cream and sometimes orange blossom. Marie supposedly loved oranges, and luckily, there was an Orangerie in Versailles, which you can still visit today. When Marie Antoinette lived there, the oranges were used to make orange blossom water. Supposedly, the Queen liked to drink it for nerves and used it as a beauty product.

orange essence is from Middle Eastern food shops.. and I would def try the Marie Antoinette diet! Actually, It is really what most French people eat today - more or less. Hot Chocolate /coffee/pastry for breakfast, cheese, veggies, meat/chicken/ big lunch and soup for dinner - or at least a salad and something light for dinner. I Have several French girl friends who use cabbage soup to diet and stay trim. Which is like bone broth, but they add cabbage strain it - seems like the best kept French secret!
So interesting I know I’m going to try it too
Rose essence is a common ME flavor too.
Butter and cream are also the secrets to French women's big breasts!!
@@iseegoodandbad6758 hmmmm - mine were a freak of nature, but there you go!
@@blissiimo2064 are your large breasts because of dairy??
Mozart played for her when he was a child 💕
огange blossom oil was favorite smell of Lou's 14king
Mozart and Marie Antoinette were close in age. He is said to have asked her mother about marrying her.
He slipped on the floor and Marie helped him up he than propessed to her he was only 5
Mozart's sister wrote his music. He's a hack & wasn't as guiness as we so thought of him. Mozart's a girl lol.
Absolutely, he did! And when he finished his concert for the Austrian Court, Maria Theresa told him to pick anything that he seen as a thank you gift for a job well done, he replied that he'd like Marie Antoinette's hand in marriage!! They all busted out laughing at the preposterous idea! Lol
I think it's similar now in France. Eating small portions, a small breakfast, a bigger but balanced lunch - the focus is fresh foods (lots of vegetables), small dinner and slower pace. Plus they walk, walk, walk .Unfortunately smoking too.
Well, nobody's perfect ;)
She already knew about intermittent fasting. Brilliant. Bone broth helped with my fine lines. It’s full of collagen
Thought provoking! My aunt is 93 & has survived the last 15 years or so only eating cakes and cookies mostly. Those macaroons look totally scoffable x
*macarons. Macaroon is a coconut ball. I could eat Macarons every day although unfortunately Marie Antoinette never actually ate them. She did eat Macaroons though.
A few years ago, I watched a British program with Sue Perkins as Marie and when you said her home smelled bad, it reminded me of the program. Sue Perkins said Marie, her husband and children all went to the bathroom behind the huge curtains. I think she was a teenage girl who was thrust into a grownup world with it's problems. You did an excellent presentation of Marie, as you do in all your videos. :-)
Such a beautiful presentation! I've said it before, but I really like how you transform what is essentially narration into something so visually rich.
Luckily she didn't mean cake, she said (if she really said it) “brioche“ which is a form of bread. It's very good. I wonder if some of her clothes still exist? I know that original jewelry from her was sold in an auction.
There is a museum in Canada that owns a dress that is probably Antoinette's: it was refashioned at some point in the 19th century, but the provenance is good. There is also, I believe a shoe, or pair of shoes at a shoe museum? I do wonder if another dress won't appear from someone's attic, given that old gowns would have been given to her ladies, who would have likely kept them as a relic; on the other hand, cloth was valuable, so when times were tough, they were likely sold for a pretty sum.
^ I think their is a video on UA-cam that shows part of one of her dresses
I’d love to see Marie’s jewelry ❤
You can find orange blossom honey, orange blossom water, and essential oil, often called neroli. It is lovely, I promise :- )
She sounds like me. I love those foods 😍 especially hot chocolate and crossiants

Oh and FYI, Marie Antoinette never said “Let them eat cake”. This quotation is attributed to “a great princesse” by Rousseau who had written about the phrase in question in one of his six books entitled (Confessions). The quote is as follows “”At length I remembered the last resort of a great princess who, when told that the peasants had no bread, replied: "Then let them eat brioches."” Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is also very possible he created the entire occurrence as confessions is considered less factual and more satirical. Though some of the instances he wrote of did occur. Regardless of the possibility it was ever uttered in life, the fact remains those books were written and finished in 1765 when Marie Antoinette was only 9 years old. Attributing it to her was simply a P.R. Stunt perpetrated by anti-monarchists trying to destroy the Absolutist Monarchy. Which I’d like to point out Failed miserably as after the reign of terror ended there was rather a flip flop approach to government. Examples in order: The Napoleonic Empire, The July Monarchy, The Second Republic, The Second Napoleonic Empire, and finally a somewhat stable republic in 1870. Almost a hundred years after the initial Anti-royalists started gaining traction as a serious political movement. That republic lasted until 1940 and then Vichy France happened and it’s a lot to go into. HOWEVER, my point is she never said that and never would have. By all contemporary reports while she was a Queen with all the attitude and self-involvement that denotes, she was also considered a kind-hearted woman who felt stifled in her less than role as Queen. The Queens had no real political power and that’s true throughout most of French history. With few exceptions. Sure, if she had been born in France or had been anything other than Austrian she may have been more accepted and been able to really effect change through more subtle political maneuvering but she wasn’t all that intelligent or educated. She was the 16th child of the Empress Maria Theresa and was somewhat neglected until a political coupling with France via marriage was conceived. So What was Marie Antoinette, “L’Autriche”, whom the court fashioned with a double entendre to mean the Austrian Bitch supposed to do? Was she supposed to kick her husband in the pants until he wasn’t an indecisive child? How do you turn someone who’s whiny, child like, and doesn’t want to rule into a good ruler? So, She sought respite in vapidity and luxury and why not? She was Queen... wouldn’t anyone do the same?
I’m not saying she should be made a saint by the Catholic Church. She had just as many bad qualities and most people these days. She could’ve been a better/much more involved person sure. But she was not some evil vindictive person trying to destroy France.
I have to agree with most of your answer but the conclusion. The main reason, Marie-Antoinette became so unpopular is because she never understood what it meant to be Queen and wanted the life of a private person. A Queen of France’s life belonged to the public, the courtesans. She didn’t follow the rules and paid the full price. She had to be above all suspicion, all gossips. It’s true that both Louis XVI and her paid for their predecessors. I can understand the woman but I can’t understand her as a Queen. The director S.C. is famous for filming rebellious teenagers and M.A. was a good subject. I think we truly realize the errors she committed. No one has ever said that being a queen in those days was easy. Basically you had to be virtuous and a mother to the Dauphins. Not a fashion icon, not a minister of good taste. Of course, today, she’s mostly remembered for that and her tragic ending. It’s only in her final years that she became worthy of her role as queen.
I agree with everything you said. Back then it was super hard for a Queen. Everything they did was under heavy scrutiny, and if they even had a hair out of place, they were attacked by the wolves of court, and the jaws of the people. Sadly, another consequence was the fact that she was young. Many monarchs back then were given the throne as children. They didn't fully grasps the realities and responsibilities that came with the job. Then everyone blames them for all the problems. I always sympathize with Marie Antoinette. She's one of my favorite queens. RIP
Does it mention how utterly filthy Versailles was? People peed all over, poop everywhere, those people had worms! This is well documented by examining corpses of the period.
She needed the calories to feed the parasites.
Oh man, that'll ruin the romantisized view of Versailles 😂😂😂
Ew! 😳😨
Watch Marie Antoinette with Norma Shearer. It’s a 30s movie but it’s awesome
Oh neat thanks for the suggestion
I will thanks!
Irving Thalberg of MGM's wife.
Fun Fact: the Norma Shearer Marie Antoinette was the most expensive movie by value that had ever been made at the time. It was her Deceased husband’s (Irving Thalberg) brain child and in 1936 it cost 2.9 Million dollars. Because of the cost of the production it recorded a $750,000 loss which was practically unheard of in Old Hollywood. It’s a really great movie and her costumes from the movie are on display at the Smithsonian now.
I agree... an awesome movie!
Those cake squares and pink tea cups are so beautiful! This is also my favorite way to eat.🕊🎂🥂🧁🍵
I absolutely adore adding rose 🌹 water or orange blossom water (a small capful) to a liter of water. If it’s rose for the day I call it princess 👑 water, if it’s orange blossom water I call it Empress water. Maybe I should call it dauphine water instead!?💁🏻♀️
Dauphine Water... love it!
I think you're onto something, I'd buy it
@@djmaxipad6238 omg love Dauphine water!! 🥰😍😘
I will destroy that chocolate Croissant. 😩 only in my dreams. I never knew she was credited to bringing croissants to France.
God, I want that cake.
Coppola’s Movie also depicts that Marie Antoinette would go on long walks with her ladies. I think that would also play into her keeping a small waist.
That was a beautifully shot Movie... thank you for sharing this.
Awesome video Laura...I totally enjoyed the movie too..she played the part so well..thanks again.
I need to read this book! Thank you for the video!
I’m a direct descendant of Marie, my grandparents moved to America in the early 1900s. 💕 Thank you for this video Laura!!
For real?!?! You’re so lucky! I love her 😭
This is so fascinating. I’ve always been fascinated with french women’s beauty routines. They seem to age so well.
Japanese as well ;)
@@danif.9414 even more;)
I love Marie Antoinette and the movie with Kirsten Dunst. If you haven’t read “Marie Antoinette the Journey”, it gives a different perspective on her life and is much less harsh in judgement I think. I actually have the photo you showed of the model holding the hotdog saying “Let them eat cake” 🙂. I’m definitely looking into this book & thanks 🌸
Watch the 1939 Marie Antoinette movie with Norma shearer! You will be blown away by that! Half of the costumes made for that movie was in France itself!
I adore Marie Antoinette she has always been my favorite! I love that you did this video! Her diet was fabulous as are all French/ Austrian women. I highly recommend the biography by Antonia Fraser “Marie Antoinette: The Journey” It’s considered one of the best depicted and historically accurate MA bio and Sophia Coppola based a lot of her movie (which of course I love) off this biography and even had the author Antonia on set of the film ☺️💕
Man I never realized how similar my food tastes are to her ! I love coffee and hot chocolate, macaroni and cheese, fish and veggies and soup with bone broth. I feel so fancy now, lol !
Great vlog thank you! Love the info in your nice voice!
-and great movie I have watched a few times lol💖
Excellent film Marie Antoinette. Sofia Coppola did a great job. I loved it. Kirsten Dunst was great in it
🥰 chocolate crossings. The berries topped with cream looks good.
*chocolate crossings 😂 I love auto correct
I share the same taste for food like Marie Antoinette but i have everything in Vegan version. I eat healthy but i love pastry too much! The Queen and B Bardot are my favourite fashion icons ever. Super interesting video, thank you. I will add that book to my wishlist.
Orange blossom water is very popular in France to add flavor to certain cakes (fougassette) or pancakes, aka crêpes.
Fun and informative! I liked your voice, you tell a great story!
🌹 Hi Laura, thank you for the video it was inspiring and informative. Can you also do a video on madame Dubarry and madame Pompeo?, thank you. 🌹
amazing video as always!! ❤️
Thanks for watching
I love all things roses. I definitely want to try the Marie Antoinette rose tea. I also would love to try candied red rose petals sometime soon 🌹
Very informative....thank you. That cake looked delicious. 😋

Thanks Jazmin you too
Laura, I'd love to try Marie Antoinette's diet but, every time I eat cake, I put on 8 pounds! 😅 That cake looked do delicious! Good review! 🍰
Nielsen-Massey the brand that makes the good vanilla extract also makes food grade good quality orange blossom water.
Wow, very interesting. Not sure if I would try the diet, however, it does sound interesting. Great video.
I used to eat chocolate cake for breakfast too! Bot of my parents have German decent
I'm German and eating cake for breakfast isn't really a thing here... never heard that at least. We have our beloved bread
Same girl! My great grandfather was 100% German. 💕
I often would make my homemade sorbet and have them as breakfast in the morning.
I really liked this video! Keep up the good content 😃
Beautiful and creative. I loved this.
Bone broth is amazing. I like to have it often during the winter. I run cold- so six months out of the year are miserable. I live in DC, so the summers are nice and warm, but October through April can be quite uncomfortable. Bone broth is a nice switch up from a typical hot beverage- and a wonderful meal replacement of you are trying to lose any weight. Even if you're fine with your figure I recommend it- as it's supposed to be great for your hair, nails, and skin.
I adorbs Marie Antionette, her Life of Oppulence & now her Diet, I'm going to try it too, Thanks for all the wonderful Information! Be Well, Stay Well
I had a bowl of Cheerios and a chocolate croissant and tea. I plan on having a small salad for lunch with maybe tuna. And chicken stock for dinner. Maybe some cooked carrots
As always, beautiful & interesting videos 🦋
Fabulous Video. I love history and Maria Antoinette🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love all of your videos Laura!
✨That cake looks delicious! Lol great video! I find her very intriguing and beautiful! 🌹🌹🌹
When I was doing Keto for a while they tell you to start your day off with bone broth because it's warm and gets your stomach primed for digestion. I don't do Keto anymore because after doing my macros it showed that my body does the best with carbs, but I still like bone broth. Kettle Fire has some great ones.
Your channel is so lovely! 🥰
This is really interesting thank you for creating this video.Evrything looks so preety.I imagine the room smelled od roses and sugar.
beautiful video! thank you!
I’m gonna start eating like Marie Antionette ❤️ that cake looks so good ❤️
funfact about marie: she was a scorpio with a libra moon and cancer rising, LOVED her sweets, and she loved her children dearly. i do love that movie with kirsten dunst in it too one of my faves. she did delight herself in drinking sugar water at nighttime, that food in your video is making me hungry LOL (im also part german and i love sweets like marie) crossiants are soo good especially if you make them in a sweet fashion with putting nutella in it. i do love a hearty eggs bacon and cheese crossiant too.

This was very interesting Laura!!👏👏💟💟it is true it is when you eat. I eat sweets in the morning no later than noon time if I want sweets!! I don't eat after 6 pm. I am not surprised she kept a 23 inch waist!!! Very good video☕☕👏👏💟💟💟💟☺you always look so beautiful!!🐱🐈
Hello lovely Laura,
I love ❤️ this video on Marie Antoinette!! It was so amazing to find out about her diet. I just wanted to mention that you can definitely use the orange blossom water for many things. I use for nausea and upset stomach. Just a couple table spoons. It really works! Sending you love.

Please update us on the orange blossom water. I’ve never had it but anything that Marie liked, I have to try out. I loved the last video you did on her. I’m obsessed with the rose tea!
That rose cake looks delish! 😍
She wasn’t supposed to be a leader. Women married to kings were there to provide heirs.
She literally had a size 4 shoe
Orange blossom water sounds wonderful
I love that movie too!! Enjoying you!
Hi!! I love your vintage videos....fabulous. I recommend watching the 1930’s version of Marie Antoinette starring Norma Shearer. It’s a great movie. Can you do a video on Norma Shearer please? Thank you 😊 🎀🛍🪞

hello , great share ........you're right , marie antoinette never said " let them eat cake ".....that was a previously used phrase and her detractors , used it again on marie because , it was effective and it further damage her image . .........BTW , the cake you are enjoying is soooo pretty , almost too pretty to eat ......: ). thank you , for sharing............

Marie Antoinette was just young and just wanted to have fun.
This cake looks so good 😍😍
Orange flower water can on occasion be a tad stinky. But it is great for greasy skin.
Orange blossoms are the best scent
Love that movie 🤩💕😻😍
i had a dream where you had a severe mental breakdown and spent 23k on cosmetics, then used them on dolls and destroyed them. you also looked like you cried, with mascara all smeared on your face. you recorded it and posted it online, and many people talked about it online. it was a very weird and scary morning alarm.
disclaimer: i am sorry for dreaming such a thing, you seem like a lovely lady.
edit: this video was very interesting, very informative and visually pleasing to watch. it is also said that Marie Antoinette did want to be a leader at the beginning of her reign, but the french aristocrats got her to be corrupt like them, and be out of touch with reality.
Omg that’s terrifying haha
I I
💙💙💙 I am starting this diet....
I love this! Good job!
I think I discovered my new diet and lifestyle.
I never saw the movie with Kristin Dunst I need to now
Excellent content
Orange blossom water is used a lot by Hispanic women. My mom would give it to me when I need to calm my nerves. If you have a Hispanic market near by you should be able to find it. I love it nice and cold.
Orange blossom water can be found in Persian grocery stores.
I know you enjoy vintage. Have you seen the Marie Antoinette film from the 1930s? It was by MGM and starred Norma Shearer.
I'm European and I do eat cake for breakfast so it might be our thing
