Does anyone know the name of the music playing 'under' the scene as he says this line? Just hair raising, in a great way.
The great shame of this case, other than the wrongful conviction and imprisonment of all these young people, is that none of those corrupt, lying bastards in the police were ever held accountable for their criminality.

"I'm going out the front door - with Gerry." Still elicits tears - even now! I find it chilling!
Only one case of British injustice in Ireland..
I'm a free man. Damn....
My Irish Father who had a business in Ireland and U.K. was heading to Dublin on the night of the Birmingham pub bombing, he was using his Brothers car also a director of the business with Irish plates, he was held and questioned for 14 hours..punched in the face during the interview and abused..he had lived in U.K. since 1958...what in his opinion saved him was ironic...His Wife my Mother had worked for the ministry of defence since 1965 and had a high security clearance, My Father had been vetted and cleared as part of the procedure, this was pre-computer, he was allowed a phone call 12 hours in, my Mother made one call to MD and a special branch officer arrived at the Police Station and my Father was released in five minutes, no apology, the Special Branch officer was with him when in the car park by chance the arresting officer spoke to my Father, called him Irish scum..the special branch chap punched him breaking his nose..saying his own Father was Irish then kicked him in the bollocks .... gosh imagine that in UK in 2020 😬
Awful, and I am so sorry he had to go through that.
One day when my son was in secondary school an Irish young boy called him a terrorist( being from the middle east) it just happened that the Biology teacher who is also Irish heard it and it made him furious, he spoke to the boy and explained to him that the Irish were called terrorists as well and suffered a lot because of that stereotype , he then asked him to apologise and write a paper about racism. My son always remembers the anger and the pain in his teachers voice and manner at that moment.
A lot of bad blood
That is absolutely shocking and I hope that your Farther had Prosecuted the Police officers in Question
This just simply proves that we Irish have suffered racism/discrimination too.
" His only crime was he was bloody well Irish.."
he broke into peoples houses .. he was scum
Daniel Day-Lewis is such a great actor.

I remember watching this scene for the first time. I stood up and clapped for them. It's a very powerful and moving film. Daniel Day-Lewis is an absolute beast in whatever he does.
I agree Gerry was a beast...real druggie thieving fenian scum.
Daniel is the best
One of my great great grandmother's was an Irish immigrant.
She'd been a teacher in Ireland.
The British burned all the schools, banned education -- made it ILLEGAL -- and would hang anyone caught teaching. Immediately. No arrest, no trial.
My g-g-grandmother continued teaching until somehow the Brits found out and she was warned. She fled to America for her life.
She's my hero.
Retired librarian, Michigan
Was she from 1800s that was the penal laws and as an irishman myself the 1900s were when england were like hell on us gerry conlon and three others were free on that day and bloody sunday 1920 this day 100 years ago 14 people died the youngest was 10 the oldes 67
@@justfootballstuff9907 1860's while U.S. Civil War was raging. Do you know Irish Immigrants formed a northern Irish Brigade to fight the South, seeing such a strong parallel between their British horror and U.S. slavery? Lovely. Inspiring.
@@veralenora7368 Not really, Irish brigades formed from immigrants fought for both North and the Confederacy. The Irish who fought for the south considered the US government to be as bad as the English. Most Irish were conscripted or 'volunteered' into the Union and Confederate armies though, depending on where they landed, as a condition for being allowed to stay. With only tyranny and famine left in Ireland they had little choice in the matter. At the Battle of Fredricksburg, the Union Irish Brigade was sent to attack a defensive line held by the Confederate Irish Brigade. Many of those soldiers had family and friends on the other side of the field but it didn't stop the slaughter, so tragic.
@@FlyingFox1994 OOOh, you spoiled one of my wonderful historical heroics!
(Always best to know the truth tho.)
@@veralenora7368 I've always found in history that heroics are usually anything but. There's always tragic contributing factors, usually either incompetence or malice. If you haven't already done so, check out the Fredricksburg sequence in the film Gods and Generals. That film got a lot wrong but its portrayal of that battle is pretty great imo. It really shows the helpless situation of the attacking Union forces, the idiocy of Ambrose Burnside and the bravery of both sides, especially the tragedy of the Irish brigades
Can’t watch this without crying....well done Emma Thompson and of course the GOAT DDL
The same.
Ditto
I got this clip and I have no concept of what’s happening, corrupt cops and British vs Irish, with a protagonist who looks like an antagonist. Guess I’ll have to see the movie
This is ongoing history
its actually a hip hop musical. it's actually really good.
Yes I agree and Speaking as a firm Abolitionist I'm glad that we no longer have Hangings in this Country and in My Personal view the bad apples in the Police force should be booted out of the force and why those Corrupt Police officers were never Successfully Prosecuted for Perjury and perverting the course of justice is being Me,I am 64 on the 22nd of next Month and I well Remember the IRA Bombings and the court case and I also saw that film and what made Me a lifelong Ablonishonist was Derick Bentley and look how long that tuck into clearing his name 45 Years and I hope to God that the Death Penalty will never come back into this Country

British "justice" at it's finest. I remember watching this live & literally every house on my street there were cheers & screams of JUSTICE!!! because everyone was watching. Including the world. Never forget
...where as irish justice is a 9mm to the kneecap....or a bomb in a high street....or a shotgun blast at the front door.....
@@catlee8064 What IRA did through those years is nothing compared to what British did trough out centuries on mass scale. It's always easier to see others faults and completely ignore when your side does it.
I love how you can see the joy in the judge of setting things right and setting those people free!
Jerry and Giuseppe Conlon are names that should never be forgotten, may they rest in peace❤️🇮🇪
I'm a free man and I'm going out the front door! - absolute classic!
God rest you Gerry Conlon. A voice for the Irish people.
he broke into peoples houses .. he was scum
No, a voice for the catholic irish.....
1993 was certainly a tremendous year for the Oscar… many great movies contended. This was, rightfully so, one of them…
0:57 Paul Hill actually wasn’t set free until five years after Gerry Conlon was released. He was kept in prison until 1994 for an unrelated crime.
That's not quite right. He was returned to prison in Belfast but was released pending appeal. He traveled to America where he met and married Courtney Kennedy (RFK's daughter) in 1993. The conviction was quashed in 1994.
I always cry in this scene... I've seen so many court scene in in cinema, none seems as emotional than this one to me.
The "I'm free man I'm going out the front door." is such a powerful line... that should become as universal than "May the Force Be with you" or what ever. In the whole world we should all shout this line to every form of dictature or autocracy.
This movie make me proud to live on the same planet than Irish.
Still brings a tear to my eyes, injustice of the highest level !!!
Daniel Day-Lewis is a brilliant actor.
Come è stato possibile non dare l oscar a questo film, a quest attore magico, un opera magistrale, che ti scuote l anima!

DDL and ET are extraordinary actors.
RIP Gerry Conlon and his father Giuseppe! 🙏
I’ve never seen this film... but I still got choked up. Must be an amazing movie.
It is. Brilliant work by director Jim Sheridan who worked with Daniel Day-Lewis on several ocassions (probably most notably on "My Left Foot") and was responsible for some of the DDL's best performances.
I had to watch this movie for school (I'm french and we are working on justice and mistrial) and I so enjoyed this movie that I watched it a second time when I went back home
@@jaderispal4891 hard to believe it's a true story. The same thing happened to the Birmingham 6. Except they spent longer in prison.

Sooooo hard to not get teary eyed watching this
An incredible film with fantastic acting!!
When music starts with the hammer .... goosebumps as well.
This was such a fabulous film!
Another reason for the conviction of both the Guildford four and the Maguire Seven was the scientist who did the testing based his tests on the initial suspicions of the investigators. He was found out in,I believe 1977 or 1978 and suspended on full pay. A probe of over 6000 cases was started;police and fellow forensic scientists found multiple errors and inconsistencies in over 1500 cases. Eventually, the scientist was ordered to retire due to "limited efficiency".
By the time the probe was over, unfortunately many innocent men and women had been incarcerated for years. Because of the statute of limitations- many of these people had been locked up for more than a decade; The Director of Public Prosecutions was unable to press charges against the scientist involved for both Perjury, Conspiracy to Pervert the Course of Justice and withholding evidence. Had he been found out sooner, it may have been possible to prosecute him criminally. The only recourse available was to tell him to take early retirement. An error rate of 25% would never be acceptable. 0.5% max
Damn that's some good background music
Trevor horn, amazing producer.
"You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart" is such a moving, cinematic song to end this film on.
I cry every time I watch this scene...
this movie hits hard....
Tears every damn time.
I cry every time I see this
Cant Watch the Scene without Cry.
Can't watch this without crying

Daniel Day Lewis is just amazing, such a strong talent.
Acting was invented by Daniel-Day Lewis. What a Giant.
I wish I hadn't see the scene, I would still watch this film
After 14 years in prison, Gerry (Daniel Day-Lewis) exits the courtroom a free man.
15 years
Imagine if u were a lawyer who fought for or a judge who dispensed such justice.
Isn’t that a lot of good karma ?
One of those movies I simply can not watch again, I get way too angry and can't enjoy it. It's a fantastic movie filled with amazing performances and I remember so many small details even though I've only seen it once, truly a movie worth remembering.
The greatest exit of a building in the history of cinema
You made me the their of your heart. God dam great ending song!
And not one cop charged with perjury!
By the time that the truth by the lawyers was discovered, the statute of limitations had passed. Meaning that criminal charges would be impossible to make stick. It would also make the officers appear more heroic to their supporters if they were charged and acquitted. The only thing that could be done is retire the officers and scientists quietly to minimise the publicity.
What a powerful scene
Still brings me to tears. I was 23 in San Francisco and popped into an indie theater to see whatever was on the screen. It was this movie. At the end, I realized it was a true story. I was in tears and angry when I left. I was still understanding the intricacies of governments and corruption and cover ups that made the battles between people even more difficult. I wish people would learn... but we never have in all our time on earth and I fear we never will. There are many who are good people... but it only takes a few to really F things up more.
My mother's great grandfathers were misstreat at English's court the same way my father's great grandparents were misstreat at American's court... for what?? been Catholics and starved I'm the son of doom's people and I'm bloody proud about it...
I came across the trailer and I want to say I'm going to watch this tomorrow I also want to say it's kind of sad because this story is truly relevant even today and even the police officers and the detectives and put these people away are never really punished
This movie changed me when I saw it.

I was a 19-year-old Irish man working in Bank of Ireland in Queen Street in 1991. I went out to get a sandwich for lunch and just happened to be passing the Old Bailey as the Birmingham 6 were being released. There were loads of people waving Irish flags but I had no clue what was going on until I got home and saw it on the evening news! A great day for the parish ;-)

Homie on the bagpipes was jamming
Thats not bagpipes, bagpipes are Scottish. They are uileainn pipes, Irish pipes.
Bagpipes are Scottish, the pipes you hear in the film are uileainn pipes, which are Irish.
This exact corruption is common in the United States
No it really isn't, it's extremely rare in the US if you actually study the crime and judicial statistics.
@Kevc00 545 cases as of Dec. 31, 2022 till today have resulted in exonerations due to DNA evidence. When the police believe they "gottem", they will refuse any evidence to the contrary in the United States.
The exonerations are primarily wrongful accusations of sexual misconduct or false grape allegations but also includes several wrongful accusations of murder and aggravated assault.
No matter where you go there is no justice for the people
99% decisions are just, who the hell would make a movie about that. An innocent man not being arrested isnt great cinema
