Ep5 - Bad Conditions and Killer Micro Jigs! Surf Fishing at Huntington Beach

  • I bought a couple of Jigpara 15g Micro Jibs and took them out surf fishing at Huntington Beach. Conditions were really tough and the other people I talked to weren't catching much. I ended up catching a couple of good sized surf perch that nailed the jigs, despite the rough conditions. If you're looking for something new to fish with, maybe give these a try.

    Try a Lucky Craft Flashminnow 110 instead. You won't land as many but when you do they are considerably larger. Tested and proven.

    Cool. I was all getting back into it with my channel and then a few months ago, whammo car wreck.
    But finally getting off the injured list. I love fishing the surf.
    Glad I just happened by this channel and nice to know these little irons work in the surf.
    Nice video. I’m going to have to try this out this week. I am definitely hooked on socal 😉

    Try Charley Brewers Crappie jigs on a Carolina Rig with a 6 foot leader. 3/4 ounce or lighter should work nicely in SoCal. I live in NorCal the waves are a little more violent up north. Thank me later. U can leave those sand crabs in the sand.

      I agree. Leave the sand crabs in the sand. Berkley gulp sand worms work great

    This time of year when the high tides are in the evening (usually the windiest time of day), those micro jigs are awesome. They cast upwind and they get bites in that choppy water.

    • @HookedonSoCal
      @HookedonSoCal  Місяць тому

      Yeah, that's what i'm finding for sure. And, they are a lot of fun to fish with! I like the more active style of fishing.

      @@HookedonSoCal when you go to cherry beach, fish the first three lifeguard towers to the left once your park. There are some eel grass a ways out. You need to cast out till you find the eel grass and work the micro jig slow. I like to to find the bottom and just two to three bounces at time working my way back. I try to keep it as close to the bottom as possible. There are some bait fish in the water right now. So anything silver/ white. I’ve caught a bunch of short halibuts, butterfly rays and some sand bass. Good luck! How to run into you some day!

      @@huotponlok5914 wow! thanks so much for the detail. that's awesome! you don't have a problem with the treble hooks in the eel grass? i fish sometimes in the grass at los alamitos and i probably wouldn't throw a micro jig. would definitely love to run into you!

      @huotponlok5914 Місяць тому

      @@HookedonSoCal Cherry Beach is generally sandy bottom and the structure are the eel grass. I don't usually get caught up when I use the jigs with the treble hook. It's like you're casting out to an empty field with trash strewn all over. You're more likely to catch/snag debris. Ive caught a bunch of Sand Bags bass. lol I do pretty well with a jerkbait there as well. Cherry beach does not have big waves and is pretty flat on most days. I fish it between 0600-1000. It best on low tide cause it allows you to cast closer to the eel grass. I find the eel grass and then work it left or right and right until I don't get any eel grass and then I'll work that non eel grass for awhile. I get a ton of bites this way. It gets pretty calm there and I've been able to use 3g and 7g gram jigs. Daiso sells fishing stuff and I always buy their jigs 3g and 7g jigs whenever they are in stock. When the waves are lapping the shore and the top looks likes glass, I fish it slow and something shiny; allows the fish to zone in one the lure. When its choppy and you can hear the crashing of the waves, I'll fish fast and erratic. If the fish are there they will bite. sometimes. maybe. a lot of the time. lol I fish the mornings there and always try to find a low low tide to fish. I hope you catch your PB anything at cherry with a micro jig! TIght Lines!

    whats the best time to fish HB surf?

    • @HookedonSoCal
      @HookedonSoCal  Місяць тому +1

      I primarily focus on fishing around the highest tide of the day - if I have a choice. usually try to be out an hour or so before and fish until an hour after. Otherwise, I think it's best to just go as early as possible in the morning.

    Seems like those jigs will sink the bottom immediately due to the shallow water. And seems like you started the video at low tide.

    • @HookedonSoCal
      @HookedonSoCal  Місяць тому

      It was a rising tide, about 1.5 hours before high tide. You are correct, that they are designed to sink pretty quickly to the bottom. But by jigging it during the retrieve, it will flutter along the bottom.

      These lures do work VERY well for local surf perch and other species, even tuna when they are going after smaller baits. The big surprise to me was that I didn't end up loosing a lure or spending time dealing with eel grass or kelp on the lure. I didn't waste time clearing salad from the hooks, just fish.
