I'm blown away by this. You literally do not need any other video on Hellblade, this has covered everything you could possibly need to know. And told beautifuly. You can tell you have a lot of passion for your work and the games that you cover. Thanks Tiptoe
It's clear you're put in an extraordinary amount of work and you are a gifted story teller. I have enjoyed each one of your videos. Keep up the amazing work!
This is the best lore video on UA-cam for Hellblade. A full chronological retelling of the story, connecting all the characters and events in a way that's easy to follow, and told masterfully to boot! Incredible work!
@@MrJaxon620 Considering what happened to Senuas' mother, I think its fine as a middle name only. haha. We don't want that particular story to come to life.
Senua's Sacrifice is perhaps the most powerful piece of media (not just game, but all media) that I've ever experienced, and I your retelling truly does it justice. Well done.
This game was so refreshing for me. Story that was told in great way, allowing us to slowly sunk in to Senua's mind. On one hand madness, abuse and darkness that her father put there. But also love as this light guiding here through. But outside story it self, game that is this marvel that wasn't stretched with some side activities like looking for freaking loot to get better weapons, more trash for crafting.. While those are not bad additions to some games ,at most occasions I feel that are done in way just to "clock more hours" for player that doesn't bring nothing interesting in the end. For me this game was like good book, self contained, rich in details but also leading us from some beginning to end of its story. While it clearly says there will be another ( also trailers of part 2 do so :) ) and after playing it like 3 times already I still want to get more of Senua it still would not left me disappointed if it would end there.
I so strongly agree with this. Hellblade didn't overstay it's welcome; it was lean and to the point, always with something significant to say. I remember struggling quite a bit with a few of the puzzles, but the player is *meant* to struggle and be confused at times. We're the passenger, not the protagonist. My understanding is Senua's story is a trilogy. There are 3 dots someplace in the start of the game, with 1 filled in. Check bottom right corner at about 9 seconds into the reveal trailer: ua-cam.com/video/2TR0gaG01do/v-deo.html I think Senua still has a lot of transformation to go through and a tragic story to tell.
I live in a house, a family that remind me and my consin's son that video games are the death of us. That we are stupid to seek refuge and self growth inside their stories and gameplay. Like working class use to mock people who loved reading books, back in the days. This game in particular is for me a reminder: my cursed and damaged family doesn't know the quest of Senua, the search of Harry Mason for his daughter through an unspeakable nightmare, the thirste for revenge of Heather for her fahter's death or the ritual of Walter to get back the only memory he cherishes. People who doesn't understand where a lot of gamers come from, they don't know these stories. Thanks also to you for that reminder. Here's my subscription to your channel. Gosh I just found this channel and I’m blown away by the production of these videos (literally spent a whole day binge watching your channel lol) it’s crazy how underrated you are!!
The idea that Senua is either 1. Genuinely descending into hell and killing off the gods of those who have wronged her or. 2. Slaughtering vikings in a psychotic rage in their own homes. 3. Slaughtering gods in a barely functional psychotic rage. Are both equally satisfying in their own ways.
in Senua's mind she is descending already to hell by killing all the vikings soldiers, her guilt of killing all those village people along with dillion when she left and her father's voice itself telling her that she is the rot. all these together are happening at once. the rage within herself also makes her wanna fight even the gods when she reaches the hell for all the sins she thinks she has committed and that she is willing to trade herself for Dillion one last time when she reaches Hella.
This lore video is still probably the best I've ever seen for this game; my fav section has to be the Sea of Corpses. It's just SO well done with the music and the way you explain it.
I struggled to get into this game due to the combat mechanics but loved the story and art and concept. Thank you for making this. It has become a way for me to enjoy this fascinating story.

FINALLY!!! An "explained" video featuring findan. I've played the game twice, pretty good with the lore when it comes to the mother, father and dillian but findan not so much. No one else brings him up in their videos. Even though he's a main character. Awesome video. My only criticism is that it would of been cool to feature more in game scenes with actually dialogue and soundtrack. The music you used is really nice but it qould help take us back if we had the ost. The first time you do it is 12:15 in. The voice acting in this game is sooooo good. Throwing out some quotes would have been great. Anyway, best explanation vid for hellblade on YT. Without a doubt.
So good! I think there's some correlation with Hella and her Mum though. Half of Hellas face is burned, similar to what is portrayed of her mum at the stake. As Hella is the source of the darkness, maybe Hella is merely the 'illness' passed down from her Mum? At the end, I think she kills that aspect of her by facing it head on (e.g leaving it on the ground before departing).
Everytime I run around with the severed head of my loved one, I get put away. Go girl.... Your coverage is pretty impressive. I'm getting the urge to keep watching your channel. Good and simple so far. I'm guessing you have material with more of your opinions. I love your taste in games too...
Having seen the Trailer for the 2nd game, where the fantasy/horror-asprect seems to be quite real, and not just for her, I have to ask, is that "real" in the 1st game?
@@NightWolfXVI Of course this is a possibility, but as far as I understood it, only the phantastical stuff was in her head, not real people & places, real people, like the Vikings, were real enemies, though a bit demonised, more monstrous, and she realy went to these places, except Hel, of course. This works because she always was alone, except maybe the Traitor was real, maybe. But what she saw & heard only she saw & hear. Now, the sequel shows her having lots of allies, and everybody sees the phantastical stuff too. So is this "real" or is everybody delusional, sick too? I understand this could be just a dream-like state, but presenting this like that, like it's a 100% different than "we" see & play it, that would be a cheap twist, saying it wasn't real just for the sake of it. This only works for her, if she's alone, for her it's kinda real, but everybody else probably isn't delusional too, so I'll have to asume this is kinda real. Her killing her own men, her not having them at all, them being imaginations, possible, but that would be weak storytelling, if "everything" is just a fantasy.
@@eldritchmorgasm4018 In the trailer, the narrator said "To risk your life for something you believe, is your own sacrifice to make, but to lead others to death comes with a different kind of burden, one that Senua will have to learn to live with" Senua seems to be acting like some sort of priestess as she leads the people she's with to the cave and the narration says that she will learn to live with the burden that comes with leading other people to their death for something that she believes. So I think only senua could see that giant in the trailer and that her allies see her psychosis as a gift and believe that she can lead them to their goal. So far the sequel has been described as a journey across 9th century version of Iceland and that it aims to show how madness and suffering shape myths gods and religions. I think its a situation where at a time where belief in superstition is extremely common and a lack of science to understand Senua's psychosis has lead her and her allies to believe that what Senua see's and experiences is real but only her can see it thus they all share the same delusion.
Just recently stumbled across your channel. Thanks for playing the games I am too lazy to play but still interested in the lore haha. This was a great game and you did a good job. I fought Surtr first and I missed the ques for the magic mirror until the very last hit haha. Were you able to get the game all in one go or did you end up getting full of rot and end up having it auto restart?
The rot was made up in Senua’s mind and has no affect on gameplay. No matter how many times you die, the rot will never reach your head. This game is meant to make you question what is real and what information you can trust
I think Senua and her mother were seriously psychotically ill. Like, extremely schizophrenic. this makes the most sense and fills most gaps. it overshadows whatever 'bad' things her father did. she was always insane and now thinks she is a God.
1 like earlier and i could have been the 420.. dang it lol Anywho i cant wait for the 2nd installment of Hellblade, i was intrueged by the "warrior with psychosis" backstory even before release as i have mental health "issues" and *dark* thoughts in my head so games, books, movies that delve into the human phyche of others hooks me.. like Silent Hill ect.. plus im a sucker for the old pagan times of my ancestors, both Scottish and Irish alike so it was a great combination. The first was a complete marvel, a must play for any gamer imho though i will advise... Do not take shrooms before playing, i got lost in the woods for HOURS and im not even going to say what i was like towards the end of he game lmao things got crazy.. lets sat that 😂 But what id give for a woman like Senua.. lol willing to travel to literal hell and back for me, safe to say its a very rare trait and level of commitment to find these days in anybody
It's not unreasonable, though. Even today we only have partial understanding of the mechanics of mental illnesses. You can't possible blame people for liking cause and effect the way they did by connecting an extraordinary phenomenon of someone's "visions" with another one (plague, raids, etc.)
So I saw the ending completely different.. I think Hella (sp?) IS Senua and part of what the darkness represents in this game is the reality that Dilian is gone and can't come back. The "old" Senua couldn't face that reality, in fact she would stop at nothing to make that reality not true.. but that's why the "new" Senua (Hella) had to kill the old Senua with Gramr. That's when she was able to let go of Dilians head (which I assume is symbolic of her memory of him that she had been holding on to this whole time). "Goodbye, my love.." it's a moment of acceptance and letting go.. because she was only hurting herself trying to fight it (which was actually vocalized during the fight that happened just before this. "Let go, you're only hurting yourself." This whole thing is just dripping with symbolism Like her mirror for example, its a battle mechanic.. but what is a mirror? It's a reflection of self.. it's how she sees herself and, in the game, when she dodges or lands hits successfully, the mirror will fill up to unlock more strength. It's almost certainly symbolic of building confidence through small successes that manifests in a power up during game play is just brilliant in my opinion.
I was pretty close to this. I think there's some correlation with Hella and her Mum though. Half of Hellas face is burned, similar to what is portrayed of her mum at the stake. As Hella is the source of the darkners, maybe Hella is merely the 'illness' passed down from her Mum? At the end, I think she kills that aspect of her by facing it head on.
I'm just going to put this out there and y'all can fight about it however you want to I would say at least 70% of most games that have a women protagonist the woman protagonist has some sort of psychosis and is crazy
I love the way she tells the story but the goddess is not called hella she is called hel the lordless of decay the queen of twilight the sovereign of the living the goddess of the underworld that is hel we all go to her eventually at the end of our time she accepts all good people
when does this happen??? the vikings and druids DID NOT exist anywhere close to each other???? historical fiction, does not imply fiction to the historical part of the label! she is clearly 200bc-50ad pre/early/mid-roman invasion celt druid (definitely not sottish druid picts, as pictish only existed to 850ish ad at latest, and druids were wiped out/outlawed pretty much entirely by Tiberius post 20ad) And she is interacting with 500-800ad (at the very earliest!) viking invasion of britain which occured long after the fall of the west roman empire, let alone the 300+ years dead earlier than that druids (like into ANGLO-SAXON britain times), and involving the norse (odin) mythology somehow...? this is fucking nonsense!!!

This games audio quality alone is phenomenal if the second game is as good or better than the first we are in for a wild ride.
I am really hyped for Hellblade 2.
I think Senua and her mother were seriously psychotically ill. Like, extremely schizophrenic. this makes the most sense and fills most gaps. it overshadows whatever 'bad' things her father did. she was always insane and now thinks she is a God.
I wish they’d hurry the hell up with Senua 2. I wanna know what’s next😩
Phenominal

This game man …
1 like earlier and i could have been the 420.. dang it lol
Anywho i cant wait for the 2nd installment of Hellblade, i was intrueged by the "warrior with psychosis" backstory even before release as i have mental health "issues" and *dark* thoughts in my head so games, books, movies that delve into the human phyche of others hooks me.. like Silent Hill ect.. plus im a sucker for the old pagan times of my ancestors, both Scottish and Irish alike so it was a great combination.
The first was a complete marvel, a must play for any gamer imho though i will advise...
Do not take shrooms before playing, i got lost in the woods for HOURS and im not even going to say what i was like towards the end of he game lmao things got crazy.. lets sat that 😂
But what id give for a woman like Senua.. lol willing to travel to literal hell and back for me, safe to say its a very rare trait and level of commitment to find these days in anybody
Early engagement comment! Watching now. 😊
I have D.I.D. Thank you so much. You are amazing
I hate how people in the olden times saw mental illness
I hate how people seem it today too. Still too much stigma from society and bias against treatment by insurance.
It's not unreasonable, though. Even today we only have partial understanding of the mechanics of mental illnesses. You can't possible blame people for liking cause and effect the way they did by connecting an extraordinary phenomenon of someone's "visions" with another one (plague, raids, etc.)
Its an experience, not a game.
"Let go, you're only hurting yourself." This whole thing is just dripping with symbolism
Like her mirror for example, its a battle mechanic.. but what is a mirror? It's a reflection of self.. it's how she sees herself and, in the game, when she dodges or lands hits successfully, the mirror will fill up to unlock more strength. It's almost certainly symbolic of building confidence through small successes that manifests in a power up during game play is just brilliant in my opinion.
I was pretty close to this. I think there's some correlation with Hella and her Mum though. Half of Hellas face is burned, similar to what is portrayed of her mum at the stake. As Hella is the source of the darkners, maybe Hella is merely the 'illness' passed down from her Mum? At the end, I think she kills that aspect of her by facing it head on.
is "rot" = depression, manifesting as those enemies Senua fought?
I'm just going to put this out there and y'all can fight about it however you want to I would say at least 70% of most games that have a women protagonist the woman protagonist has some sort of psychosis and is crazy
in your sword still beats a heart
I love the way she tells the story but the goddess is not called hella she is called hel the lordless of decay the queen of twilight the sovereign of the living the goddess of the underworld that is hel we all go to her eventually at the end of our time she accepts all good people
yeah bro do part 2 explained to

Daddy Issues: The Game
hmmm4_4 Goood show kinda nice
when does this happen??? the vikings and druids DID NOT exist anywhere close to each other????
historical fiction, does not imply fiction to the historical part of the label! she is clearly 200bc-50ad pre/early/mid-roman invasion celt druid (definitely not sottish druid picts, as pictish only existed to 850ish ad at latest, and druids were wiped out/outlawed pretty much entirely by Tiberius post 20ad)
And she is interacting with 500-800ad (at the very earliest!) viking invasion of britain which occured long after the fall of the west roman empire, let alone the 300+ years dead earlier than that druids (like into ANGLO-SAXON britain times), and involving the norse (odin) mythology somehow...?
this is fucking nonsense!!!
