In this comparison Meta is literally the bad guy from the book. The entire plot of Ready Player One is stopping corporations from controlling the base layer of the metaverse.

I agree with you, it looks awesome but real life most of the time doesn't have a good ending compared to movies, so Its probably just become a massive cash grab and monopoly without a good ending like the movie haha..
If they keep gaming, gaming then I'll play. If they ever add ads I will never play. If they ever add phone numbers and social media I will never play.
If you want a real oasis, combine steam with VR Chat with Pavlov with discord! That will get you something insanely amazing.
I think we will see rapid advancements in metaverse technologies once all the big tech companies enter the space

there is/was one commercially available headset using DMMS retinal projection: the avegant glyph. (2016)
it's a 3D capable HMD, not a VR headset, but an interresting and incredibly obscure piece of exotic tech, i'm glad to own.
i was able to grab one dirt cheap some time ago. (for flying FPV drones) it's unlike anything i've ever seen. it's only 720P, the FoV is small, and it has some of that RGB, like older DLP projectors. but the image is increcibly crisp, vivid and bright, with absolutely zero screen door effect, because there are no pixels, but microscopic mirrors.
Honestly I think that neos vr is what a metaverse or oasis should be like

I don't understand what is the fuzz about Meta's Horizon. It is nowhere near the OASIS level of immersion and atmosphere.
The real place that feels like you are in "Ready Player One" is VRChat. We had it for almost 8 years, and everybody seems to forget about this.
Sure, it is poorly optimized, but what do you expect from a game that was free for so long (it still kinda is, I personally don't see any pay-to-win in their VRChat+) .
However, this is the only place in the internet where you can just go and meet Naruto and Masterchief hanging out in Black Cat Cafe talking about anime,
or a whole bunch of Genshin Impact characters just vibing in Treehouse In Shade. The VRChat is the place where anyone can make their very own world,
very own character, and even invent new game mechanics, which is the main gig of OASIS.
I don't know about you, but I have more hopes on a free game rather than a multibillion dollar Meta.
(P.S.: I still haven't tried NEOS VR, which came out 2 years later. I heard it is very promising as well, despite being kinda split up and abandoned by its CEOs)
Honestly cant wait for Apple to join the VR market. Love them or hate them, every time they've entered a new market they've caused a massive disruption which has meant others have had to react. Them going into VR is going to energise the industry considerably, which will hopefully mean we get something more than Mark's rather bland and desolate vision for VR.

This is iterative and evolutionary... meaning we will see it a mile away coming very slowly and in different form factors and from different companies. I personally feel Unreal is going to surprise everyone as they are super technical and brilliant with a bit of an edge on scaling worlds IMO. If you've seen their live world editor you can use VR with, its astounding.

VR: Full dive or its just a toy. As for AR: I'm eagerly awaiting functional glasses that look like regular eye glasses / sun glasses. My personal use would be A HUD of sorts for nav and other such uses. FD is probably 30-50 years out as a consumer product ( if not longer ) but the seeds are there now, until then its HMD or nothing, unfortunately. I do think the glasses would, over all, be more efficient for productivity uses vs HMD / FD depending on the industry/profession.
That ideas will be awesome. 😎

Great video! Currently, I feel the biggest problems for metas oasis is the graphics. Recently with Zuckerbergs post, it showed off the lack of depth in the visuals. Games and work will never be truly immersive without incredible visuals, and metas project won’t make the trillions they expect without this. I understand the difficulty in improving graphics, I just feel it is worth the time and effort. If Hallidays oasis had horizon level graphics, I can guarantee it wouldn’t have even been as close to successful
I say we embrace the future and technology, we have lived the past and present, it’s time to see a new type of world.

Lawl. Give me a break. VRChat is far closer to the Oasis than anything Meta has the capability of building. It's the metaverse that Meta WISHES it could build, but can't. Seriously - VRChat has sophisticated FBT-capable avatars, proper nightclubs, various types of movie / cinema worlds where you can literally watch anything you want, worlds with tons of fun minigames like pool, pinball, and table tennis... the list goes on and on. Individual VRChat worlds like Just B Club have more to do, and far more personality, than anything Meta has built so far. Wake me up when Horizon Worlds is more than a soulless, empty husk by comparison.

Im not too keen on the metaverse personally. It looks to be just a vr workplace environment. Not a game like rpo. No fun wars on different planets, no games, etc. Ill have to wait and see i guess

What is/ will the difference be between vrchat and meta verse?
Vr chat is more of a game the metaverse is more incorporating everything we have in the physical into the digital, so picture VR chat but with shops, cinimas, gaming, the internet essentially your smart phone but in a format you can explore

Apple gonna set the standard for next gen vr… but I don’t think we will see ready player one graphics until 2030 that’s gonna be the decade when vr takes over

Insulting that you'd think to compare the two things; The whole point of The Oasis and plot of the book is that corporations owning "the metaverse" will RUIN it. What is the point of "escaping" if you're escaping to a place equally as controlled by the rich as the real one. "The Real Oasis" if such a thing can exist must be like the internet, not owned by any single party, a level playing field for anyone to create without restriction or corporate strings or profit incentives. To create an environment like the one depicted in the book, it takes passion and creativity, something that multinational conglomerates cannot simply buy into existence and own forever. It has to be owned by the people, not the company responsible for constantly insisting to put mental heath of teens second to profit.
EXACTRLY!!! This is why I have a lot more hope for VRChat and NEOS VR as these platforms have very little restrictions.
Almost everything there is made by gamers, and this is where I see OASIS emerge from. Not from greedy Meta corpos,
but people who just want to make something new to experience even if there is no profit to be made.
It is simply a community of people who get together to deliver something out of this world, not to fill their pockets with money.
There is sooooo much more to the book. The second book is a bit better on how good it can be and how bad

Elon owns a company called neuralink which could enable more of a full dive type of technology that VR so I'd say more likely he's heading in the full dive route rather the Vr

Unfortunately I do not have funds to buy a graphics card and am still learning how to use Unreal Engine.
