A Triumph Bonneville T120 by the sea.

  • After taking the Triumph Bonneville T120 moto camping in Snowdonia last month, I realised I hadn't really seen that much of the North Wales coast; time for a return visit.
    Starting at the Ponderosa cafe, I rode my way through the Snowdonia National Park to Llandudno, particularly so I could ride the toll road around the Great Orme. The one way road wraps itself around the perimeter of the stoney outcropping, offering a short alpine route up to the summit and back down, it's honestly like a tiny slice of the Amalfi Coast and it's brilliant.
    After an ice cream on the pier, I headed along the coastal road to Tallacre with it's wonderful broad, deserted beaches and picturesque lighthouse. Then it's just a short hop over to see the Duke of Lancaster shipwreck, sitting forlorn in its dry harbour rotting away while local councillors seem to sabotage any efforts made to rescue the ship or to put it to good use. It's a great sight, but it does always leave me feeling a little sad to see it gradually decay more each time I visit.

    What an excellent little film that was. So glad I came across this as there's some fantastic looking roads there that I've never been on. Defiantly going to head down there on my T100 now after watching this 👍 Would love to start recording my own rides on my Bonnie as watching these are a great inspiration.

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Mel, it’s the ‘Longreach’ fender by Motone Customs, in fact all the parts for the rear are Montone. For the indicators I used an indicator mount that’s supposed to attach to the top of the shock mount, but I mounted it into the hole where the top part of the grab rail used to bolt into, all you need is an M8 bolt and a wide washer to reduce the size of the hole on the indicator bracket. There’s a few up close pictures on my Instagram at mattmcfadden which will give you a better idea of how I did it.

    I have just come across your channel and I really enjoyed it. I like how you have customised you Trumpy, very nice. I'm seriously considering a T120 as my last bike at this stage. Back problems dictating that itr has to be a pure road bike. No more dirt riding for me unfortunately. Is the T120 as good as you thought it would be, and is it comfortable for say a 2 hour ride? Appreciatye any feed back that you may wish to divulge. Greaty video, very relaxing brother. Subbed.

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 роки тому

      Hi Andrew, glad you’re enjoying the channel. I absolutely love my T120, for me at least, I find it very comfortable for a few hours riding, though I know a lot of owners put handlebar risers on which might be beneficial for your back as you are lent forward very slightly. However, the Royal Enfield Interceptor is also worth a look too as it’s 90% of the bike for a lot less money. For me I’m planning on some big trips so I wanted the extra engine capacity, if I wasn’t doing that though it’d be hard to get past the Interceptor as it’s half the price for a bike that looks and feels almost the same.

      Glad you liked the video. I swap the seat over to the Triumph Comfort seat if I know I’m going to be doing a lot of miles in one day. Hi Mat (is that correct??). Another beautiful video. I have the Cotswold Hipster Berkley panniers fitted. They look superb, but they do sometimes sit very close to the exhaust - any top tips for keeping them clear of the exhaust in your experience?

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Andy, yes my name’s Matt. Good choice of bag! I think they really suit classic styled bikes. On mine I have the two top clasps attached to the frame under the seat, then I use another buckle strap to hold the bottom inside corner to where it’s almost touching the rear foot pegs. You can do that just by looping a strap through the bottom ring on on the bag, then around the footpeg base. For me that seems to keep them clear of the exhausts. They do hang low though so I think if you have anything other than peashooters then I imagine they’ll touch.

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Mike. The T120 is a very easy bike to ride so it certainly can be a first bike, in fact it’s more or less my first bike (I did own an Interceptor 650 briefly before the T120 though). I think as long as you treat it with respect then you’ll be fine, it’s still 1200cc bike at the end of the day so opportunities to do yourself some damage are definitely there if you aren’t careful.

    Hi,Can I ask how on earth you managed to fasten the Berkeley bags safely to the paneer frame.My wife and I have tried and tried without any success.Any advice appreciated before we send them back.Thanks,Stuart.

      Hi Stuart, sorry to hear you’re having problems fitting your bags, I love mine!
      I attached the two top leather straps/clips to the frame rail under the seat, then I use one more strap on the bottom that I wrap around the pillion footrest base. That keeps the bag from sliding backwards off the rails. They do fit pretty low so if you’ve got any kind of upswept exhaust they’ll touch the bags though.

      Thanks Scott, the panniers in this video are from Cotswold Hipster, the Berkeley pannier.

    Does the fly screen block some wind or is it more for show? Just curious.😎

      Hi Bill, I would say it smooths out the airflow more than blocks it, the bike’s very comfortable sitting at 80mph, for me anyway.

      I’ve been riding a Harley Electraglide for the last 20 years. I would prefer to have a smaller windscreen on a Bonneville , but I also don’t like to eat bugs and rocks. 😎

    Would you mind telling me which tyres you have. I'm fed up with my stock Pirelli Phantoms.

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Steve, they’re Pirelli MT60RS’s. Much better than the Phamtoms, though the rear is wearing down at an alarming rate!

    • @hammersteve8
      @hammersteve8 2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for reply. For the mileage I do I don't mind that they're faster wearing tbh. Did you fit a different size to the Phantoms? @@ClassicRides

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, they don’t come in the stock size so I got: Front: 110/80 18, Rear: 160/60 17.
      I’ve heard a lot of folk saying that a 160 rear won’t fit, but I’ve had no problems with mine.

      I got it from a breaker on eBay, think it’s off a Harley.

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 роки тому

      Hi Jimbo, it’s an early 2018 model in Aluminium Silver. The Black models have blacked out pipes, wheels and engine covers, I like mine a bit more shiny though! 😁

    Do you know anything about that ship you filmed?

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, it’s called the Duke of Lancaster. It’s had a quite an interesting past that’s fairly well documented online. Seems like there’s been very real efforts by the ships owners and locals to do something with it, which seems to dead-end at the local council every time, it’s interesting to read about. Shame it’s being left to rot as it could be a great tourist attraction for North Wales.
