    I prefer the theory that the Dark Angels chapter is actually made up of the surviving Squats. Each Marine is two Squats in a suit of power armour, but there was an odd number which is why the Chapter Master has that curiously small fellow following him around. ;P

    "The Closest Thing Squats ever got to a Codex"
    Second Edition 40K's Codex Imperialis section on Squats (and accompanying Codex Army list supplement): "Am I a joke to you?"
    Also in regards to the "Squats got eaten by Tyranids" this explanation was heavily alluded to (to the point of being pretty much confirmed) within the 2021 Liber Xenologis, as Janus Draik states "I had heard rumours that many of (the Squat's) worlds were consumed by Xenos fleets" (not to mention the last Psychic Awakening book implying the return of Squat fleets, with a race named "the squ-" being thought to have been long extinct)
    As for Draco being non canon, bear in mind he was mentioned within the Inquisition illustrated encyclopaedia from 2007, even getting a full page article about him in the process :D (not to mention all the ongoing references to it in recent editions, such as the Mother Gullet story, as well as him being outright name-dropped in the newest Kal Jericho novel - Sinner's Bounty)

    Military aristocracy (or a ruling class composed by a king an his closest/best band of fighters) is taken straight from ancient and medieval germanic and norse societies, which fits with the whole anglosaxon/viking aescetic the squats and fantasy dwarfs usually sport. indeed, a lot of historical nobilities based their legal privileges on the basis of their ability at war. The citizens-soldiers of Athens and Rome controlled those city states because they had the money to afford the armour needed to defend it. The Feudal knights of the middle ages claimed their place in society on the back of their martial prowess (The Second Estate), as did the samurai of japan. A significant proportion of most officer corps in Napoleonic armies were of noble birth. In fact, I think its a fair observation that the majority of "noble" systems had warfighting as the reason they were socially elevated, at least initially. Their ability to defend the State granted them privileges with that state.

    • @TheDirtysouthfan
      @TheDirtysouthfan 2 роки тому +3

      Exactly, how well a faction does is related to how much care and investment the company puts into them. Death Guard were just an average CSM army, I don't recall ever seeing them on the tabletop before 8th edition. Now they're one of the most popular armies because GW invested heavily into them. Same thing with Dark Eldar, when I started playing they weren't even available in store and seemed more like a rumor than a full faction, now they've surpassed their CWE cousins in popularity.
      The problem though is that you have to have someone who is super into the faction. Everyone that was super into Squats had left which was part of the reason they were discontinued. I'd also take what people who worked at GW say with a grain of salt since they're often biased. The closest we got to a full Squat comeback was in the late 90's where GW was trying to come up with a brand new race. They had many competing ideas including Squats, they designed and reworked ideas until in the end it was down to Kroot and Tau and so they decided to just merge them into one faction and add in the other ideas as auxiliaries for Tau.

    The mid '90s Epic supplement Ork and Squat Warlorlds may in some ways also be as close to a Squats Codex as anything, even if they had to share it with the hated greenskins. Sadly I never got that supplement (I had Armies of the Imperium, the equivalent supplement for Space Marines and Imperial Guard) but despite having some Epic Squats for 1st edition Epic I was unable to afford Ork and Squat warlords so I don't know if it actually included much in the way of interesting lore for them.

    I like the idea that the tyranids wiped them out and it was covered up by the inquisition. However their territory was in the middle of the imperium so pretty hard to hide or write out the tyranids from this.

    If any detail of Inquisitor/Draco is canon it would make sense that it would be the squats being eaten by tyranids. That particular detail was added as part of a forward written from the perspective of an Inquisitorial Acolyte who provides the in-universe explanation for that novel being non-canon, he says he tried to verify the account of events given in the book, finds he cannot, and would greatly appreciate it if he could just erase the book from existence, a sentiment we all share.

    Thank you for being the first people I've seen (outside the den of scum and villainy that is 1d4chan) that makes it clear the "Squats got nom'd by Tyranids" bit was not, strictly speaking, established canon. That, indeed, you did your research and showed _why_ so many people believe that in the first place. It's really frustrating having to state this in the comments of every video about the Squats, because everyone parrots that idea uncritically.
    I'm just saying, GW could bring the Squats back and say they were never eaten ("rumors of our devouring have been greatly exaggerated") at any time. You know, if GW weren't COWARDS.
