Whenever someone says a game "looks old" from this era I'm usually usually thinking "What? It looks fine." I think this is pretty much the graphical fidelity that I'm perfectly fine with.
I ran this on a computer with a twin-core CPU and questionable graphics card. I am amazed by the fact that this game managed to run smooth on that computer.
Yeah, honestly I'm constantly exasperated by the way people harp on about graphics. The upcoming next generation means absolutely nothing to me, while I'm constantly facepalming about people gushing about "OMG it looks SO REALISTIC!" I'm 36. When I first started gaming, the cutting-edge was the Atari 2600 and the NES. I saw the transition from 8-bit to 16-bit, with the massively increased range of colours and detail and the first primitive 3D. I saw the transition from 16-bit to 32-bit and 64-bit, when 3D took over in all its low-poly, blurry-textured glory. I saw the jump to 128- and 256-bit in the 6th generation, the last one where we used bit ratings to measure power, where the polygon counts spiked drastically and the lighting effects began to get really impressive. And after that, everything has just been incremental polish. If you ask me, graphics peaked in 2004 with the likes of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, when they reached the point that you didn't have to use your imagination to fill in the blanks. Everything that has followed in the subsequent 16 years has just been "looking nicer", mere window dressing. So people complaining that games from a mere 5 or 10 years ago "look old" just makes me roll my eyes and feel like going back to finish some of those PS2 games I haven't beaten yet.
Dude's wearing giant, spiky pauldrons with glowing red eyes. Really not a lot of room for ambiguity there. I get the feeling that the devs weren't exactly well-versed in subtlety and smart thinkies.

Purging orks makes everyone happy: humans are happy there are less orks, orks are happy because the shootas are shooting. It's the perfect gift for everyone!
I always saw Space Marine as a good game, but also a prototype for a really great game. The core gameplay and combat feel is very good, with fluid switching from ranged to melee and nice jetpack bits. Now if the sequel had more a more engaging story and more interesting characters, as well as additional enemy variety (we got lots of factions to brutalize), it could be quite amazing.
As a guardsman, you now shit is knee-deep if you hear "Fasten Bayonets!" Which usually happens after trying to answer that question. Ahhh....the guard. It'll be fun, they said. See interesting places, they said....
I still have no idea how Relic pulled it off. Space Marine was a hypercompetent GoW clone that did a better job of portraying a Space Marine's authentic power than any game prior, or anything that came out later for that matter. Shame it was a flash in the pan. Oh well, at least the proposed sequel ideas were really dumb. Just had to come out in the days of forced MP modes. Nobody played those, so any good ideas were inevitably buried. This game's multiplayer was dug up and reused as Eternal Crusade, but we all know how that turned out... It deserved better.
@@MandaloreGaming At least it was ahead of its time, right? The journey from roadmap to release was ludicrous back then, but these days, it's par for the course for any AAA game! Yeah that's not the sort of ground you want to break...

This was actually my introduction to 40k, and it did do a reasonable job making me want to find out more about the universe. And now that I've developed a love for the adeptus mechanicus, I have to wonder: Where were THEY during the events of this game? Graian warriors are, according to the adeptus mechanicus codex, absurdly tenacious and refuse to give ground, so why aren't there hordes of skitarii infantry, sicarians (which are really, really good at turning orks into mulch) and even tech-priests on the front lines backing up the guardsmen with their big scary guns?
I think there's and audio log that states that they all got killed right at the start. This was before the Adeptus Mechanicus got its own codex and models, so I guess they thought people wouldn't really care about them.
Budget concerns and lack of talent. Game barely manages to simulate guardsmen fighting orks which is a joke in itself in this game. Relic did not had resources to expand on anything else and game feels kinda hollow. It has great fundamentals, but everything around it is meh. Even environments which he praised in this video are largely highlights and it is little deceiving review. If you play this game, it has SOME nice areas while you slog through generic brown/grey mass of this game in narrow corridors.
@@REgamesplayer I played the game and I found the environments good, also he said there's a lot of drab and brown so that's not really a valid critique.

"Jungle planet with Tyranids"? Well, it's time to review the sequel.
Stares at guardsmen
"Its quiet"
Whenever someone says a game "looks old" from this era I'm usually usually thinking "What? It looks fine." I think this is pretty much the graphical fidelity that I'm perfectly fine with.
Yup, love the graphics, perfectly suited for the game 👍
At a certain point games are fine and anything past that is beautiful, even desirable, but not essential.
Exactly how I feel.
_Halo 3_ will never age, not to me.

"Can they dodge all my ammunition?" You're quoting the Imperial guard, right?

I think everyone hoped Eternal Crusade to be 40K PlanetSide and it just ended up being...what it was. Even Dark Millenium might've been better.
