FINALLY Adding Some Power To The Tacoma!
Вставка

- Today we install the AFE Intake on my 3rd generation Toyota Tacoma! AFE even says it'll add 29 horsepower to the Tacoma!!!
LOL to that... The power gains from this will not really be noticeable, but in the higher rpm range, it does pick up quicker than stock. It really just makes the truck sound really good! Combined with the AFE exhaust I installed its a great pair to add a great sound and some power!

Don't forget the chrome exhaust tip to balance out the "improved" airflow.
I've stayed with the stock air filter and box, because when I 4x4 in the desert I only have to change the filter because of all of that fine sand...A lot cheaper than having to clean that blue filter and it does fine in the performance range...With the new JBA headers and Borla Exhaust it screams past the newer tacoma's and so I didn't have to buy a new one...
Meaning to say it all looks cool, but you will have to keep and eye on the MAF sensor if you do have to re-oil the blue filter, be careful not to over oil and let it DRY properly, because it will collect onto the MAF sensor...Now, with all that said, it looks cool and I'm sure you will enjoy that sound...I was your age at one time too...signed 2002 4x4 tacoma extra cab...207,000 miles and still running great...remember, fine sand is the enemy...and some of the newer type manufactured stock filters work just as good...of course the headers and exhaust do help...cool looking truck too...
If you paint your engine block red you'll gain another ten to fifteen percent horse power as well don't forget that either. LOL
Probably
You do realize I'm just pointing out what the box says right? Obviously an intake with no tune wont add HP
😂
Add muffler bearing and blinker fluid for more gains
Don’t forget the exhaust turbo whistle
Idiot could of just painted red stripes or the brakes red
I think this vídeo Sucks
And the stickers, adds 10 more hp.
Dont forget piston return springs
The guy behind the camera knows more then the guy trying to do stuff
out here in Arizona there is stock "hot air intake", then the open-air filter "hotter air intake" HAHAHA . Great video
Actually these don't really change the temperature. Especially since it has a box around the filter. We've done tests with our other cars that have IAT sensors and we've never seen any intake we've had raise the temps. If there was no box around the filter, then yeah it would be a hot air intake. Sounds like you need the desert intake from Toyota on yours.
I think if you would throw a k&n filter and keep everything your stock box you would be fine
Lets more particulate in tour engine though.
have 2017 TRD OFF ROAD TACOMA. got TRD air Intake and TRD exhaust....its good enough for me.......
A quality air filter /regularly changed in the stock equipment air box would have been a more cost effective and sufficient option
good install brothers, you two work well together. i hope you to laugh all the way to the bank.
Its a closed loop air system. Sensors know cold air is more dense so adds more gasoline to the mix, thus decreasing gas mileage. And vice versa
Wow! It looks a lot cleaner!
Just get some more stickers for your truck. One sticker will give you about 5 hp
i have a 2013 tacoma with the 4L v-6. i removed my intake tube that goes into the passenger side wheel well. then i installed a KN filter. felt a diff and it goes vroom now. it costed the price of about 50 bucks. does the same thing. you boys got ripped off.
Tacoma are amazing trucks my dream truck
You know ur a truck guy when ur sitting with your legs crossed on the floor of ur living room working on modifying ur truck
I remember when I thought letting dirt in my intake was cool, OEM paper > all else
Thank you lmao I agree
Afe momentum intakes are pretty sick, i prefer it than the typical shortrams. Next mod get an electronic throttle controller it cost less than the intake and gives you better response cuz toyota likes to make laggy throttle bodies
is that still a viable accessory for a gen 3 tacoma? i just bought a 2023 TRD off road tacoma and am looking for ways to increase its performance asap
Sure only you can get 1 to 3 HP but if you change the cat back also you can collect 10 to 15 HP if you install it together ..
Honestly, from what I see there is nothing different between this air filter in the stock air filter, there is no way this can gain you any horse power. However it does look cool under the hood
The stock air cleaner is the same that the 2.7 engine uses.
Yes the stock air cleaner is the same as the 2.4. That doesn't mean what you think it means. They designed the intake system for the 6 cylinder engine, and then used it for the 2.4. In other words it is overkill for the 2.4. Kinda like how the 2nd gen uses the same automatic transmission that the v8 tundra uses. Its easier to use something overbuilt that you already make than to reinvent the wheel. Most independent dyno tests show that after market cold air intakes don't add anything, and some actually hurt performance. What they tend to do is make the connection for the egr sharper so that it makes noise as the air passes it so that you can "HEAR" the extra POWER!!
Still goes through the same throttle body.
The First Gen Tacoma 5-lug is the only Taco I know of that uses a 2.4L I4.
gives u engine input u know sounds that let u know by ear 😎
get shorty headers and a y pipe and a magnaflow 3 chamber muffler
That front plug is for the scoop
Pretty sure that protective piece you cut was meant to be put on the metal cut out in the fender. That way the sheet metal doesn’t cut into the new intake
Always skeptical about the claims of any aftermarket intake system.
And here I thought it was an OV tune which reallyt does add power backed by dyno results.
The best thing about these filters? Oil change places no longer tell you that you need to change your filter! :)
I have had no noticeable power increase with mine.
The one time I didn’t have time to change my own I had an oil say “ your oil filter is dirty would you like to that replaced?”
Intake and exhaust helps top end and sounds sick. Get the afs tb spacer! It really helps partial throttle at low rpms when the truck is using the tb fuel injection instead of the direct injection. Holds gears alot more. Can't say exact fuel improve yet as 35's went on shortly aftet and not regeared yet, but for the 3/4 tank prior to 35's was about 2mpg per dash better.
So you have to take it completely apart to clean the filter?
I would like you to dyno that new air filter to verify it's advertised 29 plus HP.... I highly doubt it!!!
Next put a fart can & giant wing
Next a chrome gas cap cover .bolt on cheap mod at least 3 hp plus
Before and after dyno figures?? Just wondering, Ad claims are easy to manufacture. Or is that manufracture?
The best thing you can do without going into the engine is take it and get a custom tune. The transmission mapping / torque management removal will wake it up big time. It’ll feel like a new truck.
I'll have to look into that.
I considered getting mine tuned, but I found that the people that do it are not brick and mortar shops. What happens if you have problems with it after getting it tuned? Do they guarantee it won't screw your truck up? I have a one year old Tacoma and it seems to drive just fine....why fix something that ins,t broken?
@RR-pw5nb i got a KDMax tune and i had the same concerns as you but it doesn't affect warranty. The guy who wrote the tune did my truck and he told me he tries every tune update on his truck first for a few months before upgrading anyone elses truck. I really like it, makes it feel like a whole different truck plus i get better fuel mileage when i drive it normally
Ive been tuning trucks my whole life, mainly diesels because that's where youlll actually gain 200+ HP. You're right, tuning on a truck like this is kind of pointless, just like a cold air intake, they don't do anything for your truck lol. I own a $75k Dyno and I have never seen even 4 HP from an intake. They don't make your engine run better either, these trucks were designed by engineers for a reason. Again, diesels are a whole different game and a much more fun to play with llol@@RR-pw5nb
@kingebin9830 i cant speak for any other tune besides the KDMax but the guy who originally wrote the tune told me that the dealership cant even tell the tunes on there unless they look into the gear mapping or something. I have had 0 issues with my KDmax and i was super worried about warranty as well but its been about a year and my truck still runs great no issues at all
Do a REAR Disk Brake conversion on the Taco .
I did both on my Tacoma- actually stalls the truck when in neutral at 50+ mph/ too much air across the maf
Michael Kastner most new cars will actually stall in neutral at higher speeds like that , it's ok weird thing since the engines perform better but at neutral there is no load on the engine so it's getting to much air and not able to actually fire the gas up
Jose Leon · Thanks. Makes sense. No load to work on. Will make the computer take a hiccup / crap. Engineers know a lot more than us. They designed the 2 .7 L4 Toyota tacoma engine specifically to work under normal air intake flow. I would think if you want more horses. You would need a small turbo. Like an older tacoma had a turbo incorporated working with the engine.
Dude.. where I can find the Black stickers you have on the doors?
You need to disconnect battery for 15 min or so un ordre for computer to reset and calculate the extra air correct me if i'm wrong
wrong that would be correct for older OB1 vehicles but CAN OB2 vehicle are constantly adjusting at a much faster refresh rate. OB1 will refresh but it may take a few drive cycles. where as this ecm will take a few minutes at most.
I would like to see a supercharger offered for this gen tacoma but haven't had luck finding one.?. Btw, one helluva nice truck
It didn’t do it until I installed the front air scoop- then that caused the truck to stall
i think what added 29hp were those matching blue shoes at the end of the video XD
Why not the secondary front scoop?
better fuel mlg...you will get some hp out out some is better than none...e3-plugs will help out to...
It will sound sweet
How about gas mileage my Gs f sport lexus gets 22mph what’s with taco I have a 17 Pro in cement
i have a question yu didnt go with the TRD cold air intake its cheaper priced ?????
It was only going to add 27 HP...
Stock intake restricts the amount of air that’s being sucked into the intake. Aftermarket opens up the air flow being sucked into the intake but you’ll use more fuel due to air/fuel ratio that the vehicle is regulated.
Exactly. Stock air intakes flow the amount of air expected by the mass airflow sensor. If you are gaining horsepower by installing a system like this, you are sneaking air volume past the MAF and leaning out your AFR. This typically leads to higher EGT, more knock/detonation. Best case scenario, your ECU figures it out and compensates, usually by retarding timing, running rich and other parameters which will generally result in same/lower power at the expense of fuel consumption. Worst case, you get some cheap power gains temporarily and then blow your motor, spending more money in repairs than getting proven, reliable gains the proper, documented way.
Not cold air, baffle in tube, 29hp?
So to clean the filter you would have to take the entire assembly off. Why?!
How does this affect MPG?
I don’t think you need it,,, I have a 2010 2 Wheel Dr., Tacoma access cab with the 2.7 L four-cylinder automatic transmission it doesn’t go 0 to 60 in two seconds and I can’t go race cars down on the boulevard stoplight to stoplight however it has good sensible power for it’s size gets decent mileage for a truck,,,if I wanted something faster I guess I would’ve probably got hemi or something,,, however I was young once and I used to like to play around with stuff too so I guess it’s a cool idea tweaking them like that and all
29 horsepower gain, you guys would believe anything anybody told you,you just wasted your money and time. These add on air filters dont do shit.
i hear you, what do you recomend?
Looks same probably works the same I’d say Toyota’s TRD intake would work better tbh
How is your engine bay sooooo clean. I’m actually quite impressed and jealous
Haha thanks! I don't really clean under the hood that often lol, but I wash the truck a lot!
Because it's never actually seen a dirt road.
Does the truck have a skid plate
you should get a pedal commander to get rid of any throttle lag. Just installed it on my 2016 Tacoma and its a changed vehicle lmao
I've seen that and the sprint booster. Haven't really looked into either just yet.
AFE never tested it on the manual
I think there is a typo error on the box, it should be +2.9 hp
Lol, it probably isn't the 29 but it'll add some.
En que lugar compraste el intake?
Did you dyno the difference?
Looks like that is snorkel compatible.
From a flat air filter to a cone shape one, easy 29 HP, maybe more! Argh Argh Argh as the tool guy would say! You guys are funny. Like your videos though, keep em coming.
Cute air filter... The proof is on the Dino
Where did you get your numbers?
I was under the impression that the stock intakes are a "cold air" intake because they bring air in from above the fender. It looks like you've just replaced the stock air intake with the same thing. Did you do any testing before to see if it improved HP or MPG? I would do the same mod for my taco if I knew there would be significant improvements. Please keep us posted. Thx!
John McHatton stock unit is a cold air intake. The difference between the 2 is the afe unit doesn't have a resonator and the stock one does. Reason why it sounds louder.
So, what I've read so far about resonators only consistently said it'll make the engine louder. Those articles also said removing the resonator robs horsepower and does not increase MPGs. So I'm still struggling to see the improvement of this mod. Can't wait to see some after data on this.
I was watching one of the car shows a while back and K&N was featured in it. The manufacturer of k&n does not make any of their cold air intake kits unless it makes any difference in hp and torque. They actually r&d their kits. I'm sure you'll find one in UA-cam that actually dynoed their vehicles with their kit, just my 2cents.
JD Longrod you right it will suck all that hot air from the engine comparment, wat I did to my 96 2.7 I make a port to the inside of the fender and put a Pcv pipe facing to the front of the truck and man how big difference
The only difference is the new one can be washed, oiled and put back in "recharged"
Lol, did he ever explain the name of the part, manufacturer, cost, etc etc etc?? I want one - but I dunno wtf to call it. Aftermarket air intake?
If you live in opposite world this is a great mod
Stock truck is not restrictive. No gains to be made. Paper filter is better. Stock is rock. Just buy the stickers. Lol
I still have this intake on the truck and it hasn't caused any issues, it's more for the sound which makes that V6 come to life!
I get it
If you saw increase anywhere on your '07 it was in torque. With the new 3.5 you will not see anything. It requires remapping your ecm, ideally along the lines of the Lexus tune for the 3.5 (same engine).
back then when I added the CAI that claims to add 35 hp to the honda accord 3.5 V6 naturally aspirated engine, it had an at least 30 hp in decrease after installing them professionally at a shop... After that, I never install any CAI on a naturally aspirated engine ever, unless I want to spend at least hundreds of dollars to retune the engine to get that 35 hp gain...
It is mainly just for the sound, but it will give you a slight increase at the higher rpm range, but by itself it won't do anything. If you do full bolt ons and a tune (on a sportscar) it will help add any amount of HP you can get, but on a truck like mine, mainly the sound and I love how it is. It hasn't felt sluggish for me at all.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed Yeah, that woosh woosh sound haha, I can imagine. It's good to hear it's doing great on your truck. I will think about it on my tacoma one day. Thanks.
@@mct6902 That sound is pretty sweet when you step on it! But normal driving through town, I don't hear it much!
I am calling BS on the HP increase claim. The 3rd Gen Tacoma V6 uses the same air filter as the 5.7 l V8 found in the Tundra....it cannot ingest more air! Do a dyno test and see for your self.
Oh yeah I totally agree! No clue how a company can put this on the box. The truck would need tuning and a full exhaust to actually get that kind of power
feel any difference?
Umm so that costs $716
Well, Did it raise the HP???
Did you ever get a update on fixing the Alfa Rex light Bild? Ty💯
What’s that?
@@BrosFOURRSpeed the lightbulb sorry about that And what model bulb did H 11 or any other ones you get? Ty
It’s the same thing
vadim nesen · Good point 👍👍
Not sure what you are talking about, but thanks for checking out the Tacoma video!
Put a 1GR in it and gain some power
Probably added 1.2 HP, until I see dyno pulls you got ripped off by a slick salesman.
Did they spend your money on it grandpa? Stfu..
BSfunk44 Want more power, get a supercharger, oh, can’t do that on the Tacoma 3.5L. My 2nd Gen Tacoma was awesome, but I passed on the 3rd Gen for a Tundra. If you want to race, well I have a Camaro SS for that.
@@dougsmith7195 ua-cam.com/video/SqsrS0pb0ns/v-deo.html
Jaime Casa When the Third Gen Tacoma came out I read you cannot supercharge a Atkinson Cycle engine. I didn’t read any further and bought a 2017 4Runner. I have a new Tundra now. Good they figured it out.
@@dougsmith7195 actually, you can get a supercharger on the 3rd gen, Magnusson has one for about 7 grand and you only gain about 40 hp on it. Waste of money
Is this just like the K&N air filter?
They are all really the same to be honest!
Do you have to take all that shit apart again to clean or change the filter?
Is this the same engine used in the Gen 5 4Runner? Why did they change to 3.5 liter?
If that has a 3.5, then probably. Toyota really only has a handful of engines. Fundamentally all the same just different tuning
Dyno test it now.....idont believe spending 400-500 canadian on a intake is worth it...all I did was upgrade to a AFE Dry filter for my tacoma and when i put the stock on vs afe i gained 5lbs of torque thats about it
Man I live in the same city as you
Isn't that like selling a dream
Does the factory warranty when you modify your truck?
I honestly don’t worry about that. Technically parts don’t void warranty because a dealer would actually have to prove if a part hurt the truck in anyway, but I never had problems the few times I had to bring the truck in, but I do all the maintenance so I don’t care about the warranty lol, plus I’m out of it now!
Hey just wondering would that intake would fit on a 2017 2.7l tacoma yes?
I'm sure they make one for that engine, I think you need to select the engine, but they should have one.
Im sure google could answer that
I've seen countless tests that prove definitively, that cold air intakes do not increase HP in the slightest, but may in fact, cause a decrease.
My scat has a hp reader, it went up after cold air intake…
I believe you fellahs have a Fan in Idaho..
Have seen a Taco setup exactly like yours in my hometown several times lately. At least cosmetically anyhow.
haha cool! Send us a pic of it on Instagram if you get a chance!
@@BrosFOURRSpeed i will try to get that if I see it again.
If you are on TW I can send it to you that way
haha cool. IG is best for us :)
@@BrosFOURRSpeed fair enough!
I haveva manual
CA compliant wont be as loud
And just like every Taco, hold the ignition switch for 3 seconds before the thing finally starts.
That's normal on a push button vehicle, or you double tap it and it'll do the same thing.
This took some getting used to for me. this is my first taco, I had a lot of "no starts" for a week or so
is it california legal?? let me know please.
But love afe great stuff
You forgot to ad a firewall gasket !!!
That's not relevant to an intake install.. I have a firewall gasket, but it's on the driver side. Nothing to mess with on the passenger side.
can you have an intake like this plus a supercharger on a 3rd gen tacoma or is one or the other?
I think you can have both! From what I know the supercharger bolts right on top so it shouldn’t be in the way. But if you are doing that, do it first to see how the intake would fit.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed I think I’m just gunna do the intake, the supercharger is 10k and I live in cold weather which could effect engine reliability which is the op positive of what I want. I will be ordering this intake, is it still available and how would I find it? What’s the most reputable way to find this piece? Thank you for your content, it really is great I love the build good luck on your next one I’m sure it’ll be sick as ever
What grill is that? It's very clean!
From BPF. They have a newer design now
You want more power to the truck add some gears 4.88 or 5.29
Good advice, good on ya', trying to be helpful. We need to do something on these woofers (as in dog, not sound system). Stop all the downing millennials, and give us something we can use. If I saw "For X dollars, I can make your 2018 Tacoma 4X4 Sport burn rubber from all 4 tires when the light turns green" THAT I would watch (okay, at least from the back tires in 2WD). I know...if you want to burn rubber why didn't you buy a sedan with 3-4-or 500 hp at least(?) Maybe a 5.0L Mustang. But let's start at the present moment...this is what I have to work with, and go from there!
Shawn Schmid adding gearing will not ad power to the truck dumbass. The horsepower will remain the same
@@gsfbffxpdhhdf7043 better gearing helps use the power you have more efficiently and makes a huge difference on these trucks....dumbass
More like 29 Huskies power
Very nice mod . Question you think would fit on 2020 Tacoma sr 2.7L . Too?
It won't. This is for the V6. They might offer one for the 2.7 tho
@@BrosFOURRSpeed thank you ok
