Thanks to Jesse for making the intro and graphic for us to enjoy!!
Probably done behind the scenes, but right side trailing arm needs to have zerks replaced, so grease can get into bushing slots.
I was thinking the same thing
"Amateurish, it’s embarrassing." There is always someone Please ignore them- I hope you're having a great day, Ray!
Ray. Your annunciation is so good that it is easy to watch you at 1.5x and follow everything perfectly. But it skews my brain when I am working on similar items myself. "Why is this taking so long... oh, yeah". Love your channel. Please do not dwell too much on the negative. I think the injector rebuild factory was a cool outcome of your openness and honesty.
I’m glad to see you’re not in UA-cam jail! I was worried.
I love those FJ cruisers. Also love the older Toyota FJ series vehicles. I always pulled my recievers out because I'd inevitably end up smacking my head or my shins on those things. Usually, I'd catch my shin when moving a little brisk and end up with a 2 month reminder of the day of pain. Good catch on that control arm. It baffles me how that wasn't noticed in its handling. Plus, I really don't like things rubbing on fuel tanks.
FJs are a pain in the ass to work on. Replacing rear wheel bearings is a super fun job.
I just realized that Dave is like Al Borland and you are Tim Taylor😂
And every tool is a Binford 6100 blah blah blah.
😂😂😂😂😂
More like Frankenstein and Egor
@@jthonn Thats EYE-gor.
That's what I've been trying to think of. It fits to a T
I love finding mistakes like this and going “what idiot worked on this last?!?!”
You’ll get a weird look from the customer because normally it was either them or you 😂
This is why you go back and take pictures before and after to prove that you put the bolts you should have put in... in!
I have kind of the opposite situation! I've been wrenching since I was 14 and I turned 66 yesterday! I'm also a Mechanical Engineer, and I'm almost obsessive about doing things right! I've found a few mistakes other people (dealer techs) made on my newer cars over the years, but nothing on the older ones I've had apart and put back together, or pretty much "reconstructed".
Yeppers 😂😂😂😂
@@christopherkidwell9817 In Ray's case, it is all on video.
I read about fifty comments BEFORE watching this. I don't care too much about the negative stuff or the positive stuff for that matter. I just watch this and many others to find ways to save money and be entertained. A couple years ago, I paid a plumber $300 to fix a very bad hot water leak in the bathtub. Few days ago it started leaking again so I fixed in myself with a plastic top off a coffee can. When it starts leaking again I'll drink some more coffee and fix it again!
This is why I don't like powered grease guns except on items that need repeated greased like on a combine or farm implement that is greased almost every time it is used. Grease zerks can go bad or become blocked with dirt or old dried grease and cause the battery powered grease gun to bypass internally. Also too much grease can damage seals and potentially force out components within the joint, leading to premature wear and too much grease attracts dirt to the joint causing wear. Technically you should limit to about 6 pumps or stop if you feel slight pressure resistance or start to see grease coming from the boot or seal. Some bearings like on aircraft are sealed bearings but they also have a zerk and if you pump in too much grease you can damage or blow out the bearing seals. ----- Glad that you found the missing bolt off that link that is rubbing on the tank area, looks like it has been that way for some time.
So good to have notifications for your posts again!
Grease gun pumping, not unlimited pressure, no flow, grease passages blocked. Not greasing, gun bypassing internally.
I always think of the dreaded “ hydraulic injection wound” when he’s pumping but the grease isn’t going anywhere. 😬
I like Milwaukee tools, but I prefer the old grease guns or the air tank type.
It needs a really loud bell to signal when there is no forward pressure at the nozzle. I'm not a mechanic, I just watch one on UA-cam.
Too easy not complicated enough! Lol
Ray said: "IT'S GOT NO BOLT IN IT!!!!!!!"
Did you check the top of the gas tank for damage caused by the rubbing of the grease fitting?
Was just going to ask the same thing. Might even be a hole there.
nothing to see, move along :)
Nine times out of 10 the nipples blocked.
That's first thing I would check too
I think that FJ has other zerks that need replaced.
I strongly suspect Ray's fancy pants grease gun is making nice pumping sounds and is moving grease but is producing next to no pressure when it meets some resistance to flow . I'd have tried a known good manual grease gun on some of those fitting that didn't seem to be allowing grease flow through .
Or the zerks are frozen closed. Need to be replaced
@@jeffiguru Right, but on a manual gun you'll know instantly if the fitting is frozen because the pressure will squirt grease all over the exterior. I've not used a Milwaukee gun, but the OP may be suggesting that it limits pressure when there's no flow to prevent damage.
Sometimes the simple things are missed, like chapping the ball in the grease point with a small screwdriver. Not a great repair but a win none the less.
You don't leave the excess grease there, wipe it off or dirt will stick to it and get in the fittings. Also placing the vehicle in gear and turning the wheel manually will rotate the diff housing enough to get the bolt in easily.
Fun fact most people are clueless to with grease guns.
Instead of yanking the crap out of it to get it off the nipple. The tip of the grease gun twists to loosen and tighten the grip. You're supposed to loosen, put on, tighten, grease, loosen, remove gently. 😉
But you probably knew that and had a camera in the other hand
Correct !
Lock n Lube attachments eliminate the twisting.
They are great on assemblies that move as you fit and remove the gun.
@wayneessar7489 I find them too large for some things though. Would love to see them not so vulky
A troubleshooting and fix-it video, what Ray is excellent at!
Nice find,,,and fix,,,,,and being honest with customers....so glad you listened to UA-cam lmao....been a fan for years...cheers man...🍻🇺🇲💯🤓🤘
Hey Ray, always enjoy your problem solving in your videos. This one was great, thanks for putting it together for us. Cheers!
That longer bolt...u got another future P, and not cutting it off?

Took me back almost 50 years ago. I bought a new Holden GTS Monaro from a dealer who obviously just wiped the dust off the windshield to pre-deliver it. Lost brakes on the way home, refilled the empty master cylinder reservoir and no further problems. (Bled the brakes back in my own workshop just to be sure, and went through the entire pre-deliver checks myself) Found a leaking O-ring on the speedo drive fitting, some unfinished paint overspray, to cut and polish etc. On the Saturday afternoon drive with the wife and kids, there was a big bang and a rattle under the rear end. That same missing bolt from the upper inner control arm had fallen out. Obviously left loose on the production line. Quality Assurance wouldn't dare let a car out of the factory in such condition these days.
It is quite normal to replace the zerk fittings on our vehicles up north. Often corrosion has frozen the ball and it is just faster to replace with new to ensure lubrication.
Did not expect the nut to start so easily after hammering spinning and prying
@@oldspokes I was expecting that it would need to have a die run down the threads prior to being able to secure the fastener also
Good find. Great job 👍👍
Love watching your channel and content. It makes my morning along with my coffee. You are a talented technician along with a very great outlook about life.
Is that a silicone based lubricant? I was taught to keep grease and oil away from rubber components because the rubber becomes soft.
Ratchet straps are a great way of pulling suspension parts together
good spot for a rt angle zerk fitting.
Ratchet strap for the win! (Written before seeing previous comment.) Common solution for lifted suspensions.
Drift punch or bar helps to align holes…..spud wrench….cheap tools to add to the arsenal.
Ray look up Marline wire spike for a tool that will make lining up holes a lot easier. The old type of solid steel are the ones to get.
If you wsnted to do it you could double nut the long bolt cut the bolt with a sawall then back the second nut off cleans the threads up looks good
Too much grease is almost as bad as not enough. On the ones that did not accept any grease, the zerks should be replaced as they most likely are frozen, corroded, closed.
I always used a tapered punch to line up holes, when that didn't work I ground a taper to the tip of the bolt and hammered that sucker in. Where was wife unit ? Great vids guys
We have Flexzilla air hoses at work. They are nice because they are very flexable. They do puncture very easily because of how soft the hose is. They also do not hold up to hot stuff like torch or welding slag at all. When they do get damaged repair is pretty s8mple though. Flexzilla also make hose repair couplers and replacement ends. They are a compression type fitting and work very well.
I worked at Renault dealership here in U.K.( Bodyshop) I’d parked a van up, and it was throwing it down with rain, so I started running down the line of parked vehicles and ran straight into a tow hitch on a van, broke my left shin, and knocked my self out on a car bumper on my way down, one of my colleagues saw it on cctv, and called an ambulance immediately. 2 months off work, and I couldn’t drive for 3 months. Tow hitches can be dangerous
Oooh that’s a bad one I cringe for you in that
@@RainmanRaysRepairsI’ve got a nice scar to show for it
Good job Ray. Now the axel is safe😊
Hey Ray, how many people other than you have missed it, good catch, great video.
I would use a bit of steel wire to pry and check if the ball of the zerk was blocked or not. Easiest way to grease the parts afterwards, and leave a knob of grease all-over the zerk to prevent dust to block it again.
Glad you didn't get blocked. Maybe now we can get back to the usual schedule.
The owner of that vehicle probably owes his life to you. Great job Ray!!!!!
Change out three greese fitting, check and see if the greese was going threw all of them. The vehicle will track better now the the bolt is installed.
Bad zerks, replace😢
Great video ray as always
When I was a kid in Queens NY, I pumped gas. The owner and head mechanic would wear a Mets batting helmet when he was under a car so he wouldn't bang his head. He was a great mechanic, his 63 Impala held a class record at National Speedway at the time.
I might be wrong but I dont think those bushings have ever been greased
I us a small screwdriver and push on the little ball to get it on stuck then it will take the grease
Good catch man.
Ray, nice catch!
Fun video. those parts need new zerk fittings or the passages are clogged
lol, that car does not appear to ever have been off the road, yet it has full on dirt tires :D
A pavement princess!
Seems most 4X4s never make it farther "off-road" than the end of their driveways ...
Knocking the car off the rack could potentially violate rule number one.
Glad to see you back 🎉🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂
Aftermarket issues--go figure. Good thing there is enough redudancy to let this thing drive around with one control arm disconnected.
The fitting may have bottomed against the bushing for some reason. A shorter zerk, or filing a notch across the end of the threaded portion may work.
Thanks
In my small neck of the woods were I grew up, that would be some mighty fine jury rigging to fix someone else's F@ up. Great job Ray and gang.
Dave was smart to put that rag on trailer hitch, banging head isn't the problem, theres a chance of screwing neck up, I seen it happen............
Thank you sir, may I have another.
I was under my sisters new Jeep and they installed the front lower control arms backwards. You know how I know they’re backwards? The grease fittings are on top making it impossible to grease. I had to replace the grease fittings on my aftermarket suspension because either the grease wouldn’t go in or after pulling off the gun it kept squirting out of fitting.
Great Safety Upgrade....lol....lol...lol.....unreal...dangerous....but, all's well that ends Well. phew! U did it, Ray.....U da Best!
Sent my OCD in overdrive by not cutting that bolt to size lol..
Good day Ray and hi to the guys
trailing arm bolts supposed to be tightened AFTER you put car on the ground.
You always have a fresh take. That’s why I watch your channel!
Bot
304?
Jose from New Hampshire hey Ray if you noticed the grease ain't going in why continue going just change the grease fitting
Yay, Ray and coffee with suspense 😎
I cant beleive u dont have the harbor freight grease fitting assortment😂
Shame on you, for not having Zerks !!!!!
First, not having zerks in stock is pretty poor. Second, you take a sharp pick and depress the ball check in the zerk which is stuck. This isn’t rocket science
So, as Ray finds and replaces a missing bolt on the rear suspension of that lovely FJ, the Owner will have to have the wheels re-aligned because he's already aligned them 2 times because it was tracking right.
great catch cool vid as always!!!
You owe Dave a shot and a beer for the rags on the trailer hitch!
I have permanent chunks missing from my shins because of the trailer hitch on my old work truck!😂
In general, don't leave the hitch on when not in use! Your shins will thank you. Other people's too.
Did the squeak in brakes go away after you greased them😂
You caught that, so fucken funny.
Ray, you need some tapered awl's to help with alignment issues😅
The zerks on the driver's side. Do you think they may be faulty also since you were having trouble
There is a great channel, Just Rolled In, where mechanics posts little clips of some of the crazyness they have seen.
Formerly great channel the new stuff has gone way downhill.
When Ray is possession of the grease gun, he becomes Lubin' the Third.
Ray you should get some stadium bleechers up with big screen TV's in the parking lot so we all can watch from the bleachers and cheer the team on. Why? This is big league content Ray. Popcorn, bleechers and your content. Who could want more?😅
Judging by the rust on that bushing the damage is already done. Lubing it will not help at all.
Sometimes your attempts are so amateurish it’s embarrassing. 😳
I think the axle should have been pulled forward a bit, the bolt would have slipped in easily.
Dave and Justin are two good employees.
So when is the greace fitting coming in?
What about the other side that did not take grease?
Now We're Lubin" would look great on a t shirt
Come on Ray...no grease zerks. Get a box with various zerks, like any other shop. Any zerk that doesn't take any grease should be replaced, hence why this repair was sub-par. And what about the gas tank. Did the flattened out zerk rub a hole in the tank. We'll never know, because you didn't check. Also don't leave all that grease around the zerk, clean it up. I was expecting a bit more professional work from you. This was a complete nut job.
So now is the rear end alignment off? Could be . ?
A little FYI it’s not legal in most states to leave your trailer hitch in,for many many reasons. Shins, knees and other cars grills
In Texas, such a law would be impossible to enforce. A great many SUVs and pickups have a permanently display symbol of the driver's "manliness".
Which States are those. I've never seen that reg in ANY of the Drivers Handbooks.
Good morning Ray 🌄 well that does not look good at all
Not sure why you wouldn't flip that linkage over (like you had it to begin with) since it looks like there's access from underneath to grease the back and you'd be able to get to the front without removal.
Cheers Ray :-)
New bolt free design!
What I don't understand is you use your wobbly sockets at times when you don't need them and then you use regular ones when you should use your as you can them wobbly sockets?
Looks like whoever installed the lift kit missed tightening that bolt.
or did not put it in cause it wouldn't line up
Wow!🙄 Bet ya' when they put the lift kit in, they said "Good enuff."
Wow shocked to see that bolt missing but also that hackey repair no grease fittings on hand in a shop? No bolt bin? Something a shade tree guy would do just run a random bolt in a suspension component that's the wrong grade and too long let alone you need to torque those bolts when the vehicles weight is on it not in the air.
This right here is probably why I buy a 'Yota all the time.
If that bolt has been missing for months, and the truck hasn't wound up in a ditch, or rolled over because of it... that's saying something about the stability of the damned thing.
Granted, es no bueno, and should have been caught by SOMEONE... ANYONE... I'm starting to feel like the fault falls on literally anyone that's done any kind of inspection or had any reason to put it on a lift. It is only you, Ray, that finally caught it. That says something about the mecticulous way you do things.
105th! T.G.I.F! Ray,Lauren,Dave, and Justin. One giant bolt for man one giant bolt for mankind. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
Wheels like that would look good on the silverado
On this episode... Ray makes Playdo doll hair! 😂
