DBG: Cougar Just Runs The Fastest Ever Pass, And On The way For A Record... Clunk, Clunk, Clunk,

- Well all good things must come to an end, and I am glad to say that it is not the mighty 409 Cleveland...I had just made a record pass of 9.32, at 143, and ready for that 9.2x run. Left hard, with a 1.28 60 ft. and through the traps at 8400. While slowing down. You can hear a metallic noise. Clunk Clunk Clunk, especially while turning on the return road. After evaluating, initially thought it was the right rear tire, or axle, even rear end...But I was wrong, sound like it is coming from the transmission. I had called my friend Paul Adomaitis, and discussed the noise. He feel's it may be the planetary gears. We thought may be output shaft moving, but no evidence of that yet, and I did have to remove the transmission it to install a snap ring I forgot, that Paul noticed. I will remove the driveshaft to further evaluate, and remove the trans pan, and inspect.
Not disappointed by any means, this old Cougar and Cleveland combination have made killer passes, exceeding any goals I had made. I only planned on racing 2 more Fridays, then take summer off for family, and other work. I will get it apart, and find out the issue, may get it back to track this Spring, if not will be Fall. For now I can concentrate on Mrs. DragBoss' Mustang, be nice to have that going by Fall too. Thanks for watching DragBoss Garage, "Where your always seeing and learning something new" - Авто та транспорт
Just relieved it wasn't the Mighty Clevo that got hurt....no it was the Mighty Clevo doing the hurting....you put together a mighty Warrior there Tim !!
The warrior will be back. Wait until you see what I found. She will be running like a freight train. Stay tuned.
Not telling you anything you dont already know, but when I broke the street alloy gears in my car, I went back with pro gear alloy. When I broke a 31 spline axle, I went back with a 35 spline set up. When I broke the stock planetary gears in the transmission (powerglide), I went back with straight cut nickel gears. Good luck! Hope it's nothing too major.
35 spline here and all good. See you Sunday night at 7pm. 😉
Totally appreciate your content!
You're back at the track hitting it hard!
35 yrs ago I was bracket racing a 429 SCJ Torino Cobra (4+ years) and then life (family) happens.
Thanks!
So glad you’re into it. Trying my best to make personal records. Bet that Cobra was fun. And nothing better than family fun.
The noise intensifies when your turning it’s in the rear end
It sure sounds like it too…. James
@@DragBoss351Cleveland happened to me bud even if it’s not I’d check out the diff I broke of 5 teeth car still ran but same noise
@JamesGrates thanks James, looks good.
20k subscribers! This video put you over the top! E.t. and viewership! Dragboss garage rocks! More to come. Congratulations Tim and team dragboss family!
Thank you. I saw that at 11:43 pm, and wow, never ever thought this would happen. Team DragBoss to the front. Thanks to you and all the subs here,🏁💯🇺🇸👍👍
You did great! You really let the "Cat out of the bag" this time 😸. Tell Alaina to be patient and one day she will pilot the Cat. 👍
Thanks. lol. Yes after she found out, she said we have to figure this out so I can go for a ride. I think she will be the driver too
Killer car stuff breaks fix and repeat! Keep up the good job killer combo 💪
No worries, I had expected something eventually. I will get it figured out and back together.
Nice quick pass & great job!!! She's running real strong alright. Hope the issue isn't too severe.......but that's part of racing, unfortunately. You are Blessed with a beautiful family, and that's the most important thing in life!!!
Thank you, I am blessed with a great family and that is all that matters. I hope not too, but unlikely. Keep you posted.
Thanks. That was some fun times. He progressed to a home built 509 with a pooh pooh glide that ran 9.20 @149 in 1987. He recently blew the dust off the capri and built a mild 289. Runs 10.70s all day.
Blew the dust off, that is great stuff. Cars are hauling
The in car ride along shots are killer! The engine sounds great! The drivers focus and enthusiasm is evident. The car is rocking the clocks. No disappointments here. Racing and breakage go hand in hand. Whatever you find, my brother is not catastrophic. The car still runs and drives. You'll fix the problem, return to the strip, run a new personal best and alaina will get her ride! ❤
I have to agree, the camera is just my I phone but man do they come out clear and sound amazing. Should listen with headphones really blows your mind. Breakage goes with racing no doubt. But no plan for that, or planned from beginning. But shi* happens and I am actually glad an issue and no one hurt or carnage. I love that adrenaline rush…….everytime. Love starting in staging lanes, thumps the cars beside me. I just pretend I don’t notice. lol. Yes Alaina now know why I was not giving her a ride and not talking much was driving me crazy then. I agree she will come back with a vengeance. 😎
@@DragBoss351Cleveland 👍 ...says it all!
No more to be said 👍👍💯
Love it!! The Cleveland sounds like it's having as much as you are out there. :)
It's expected with all that power buddy! DBG for the win!
I was saying the same thing, It will be alright Mav
I hope the noise is a simple fix, but running that much power and torque things break just part of the experience 😂
I have to say you have her hooking up real good and straight as an arrow. Man the names you mentioned are all the racers I grew up with. It would make for great insight to hear from the big guys. Again as always great work and God bless you and the Family.
God bless right back at you. Amen. Yes she is cooking. Not mad and expecting some carnage sometime. No explosions so good there. Yes, had WJ and iaconio on a live chat and Frank invited me to races last year, great time with Quadra racing.

Thanks for the info, I will have to check out those interviews. Did you ever think u would be rubbing elbows
With legendary racers. Can't wait to see Momma Dragboss 69 stang
@iggyfritz7150 your welcome, no I never thought I would have 20k subscribers, things happen for a reason and I follow his lead. 🙏 I will keep on Mrs.DragBoss’ Mustang.
Just found your channel, heard the Cougar fire up, ...hit subscribe!!! Sounds and runs really good. Nice to see an old Cougar too. Kind regards.
Thanks you 55 Family. She is running well bast 9.32. More on the way. Love Cougars since i was a kid. This is my first car. Stay safe and strong 💪
That's one fast Merc, and quite impressive at 409 CI!
Thanks Patrick she holds her own. Still has to small cam and not enough compression.
Lots of fun,Tim! First thing I always check starting from front to back is observe flywheel, converter, then driveshaft, then the diff area. All that Cleveland’s power will hurt something! Your on the revs at track end don’t forget about critical shaft speed. 👍
Yes thoroughly evaluated. And all good, but found something unusual. Good steel driveshaft, 1350s should be good, should get better yoke for trans.
nice one Tim , you got the big girl singing sweet, nice hookup as well, well done Mate!
Thanks Mark. Very much appreciated. We will be back.
Get with Jim Paquet. He did the C4 in my boys red car. He’s a genius, wealth of knowledge and he and his wife are so much fun to talk to. Side note he’s as strong as a bull. No joke.
I need to see what issues is first. I have on of Jim's front pump gaskets, and have talked with him too in the past
Wish I had photos. Good friend running Cleveland with high ported heads he did himself back in the mid 80s. Always had block issues. High nine second car when the c4 lived.
Sounds like a good flowing head. Blocks can be tricky, core shift. C4 has held up great for 25 years, hell the Convertor is 25 years old. Transmission is 100 percent, shifts great, 1.28 60. Drives normal.
Your comment caught my attention because I also have high port iron heads. Mine were professionally done by Endyn, Inc. back in the ‘80’s. I’ve never had access to the required machines for such extreme modifications. My hats off to your friend that tackled the job himself.
I like seeing that your friend ran 9’s with his combination. My combination hasn’t been tested yet due to a number of circumstances that are out of my control. Mainly because I don’t a competition worthy C4 and converter. Hopefully all that will change in the near future. I’m not getting any younger for some reason 🤷♂️.
If you need photos for reference, DragBoss Garage is a good place to look. Tim uses plenty of pictures and videos to document items of interest.
It’s an amazing source of information.
Depending on what you want to use them for, you might want to check with Tim about copyright matters. I appreciate your interesting post 👍.
That engine is evil wicked mean and nasty
Impressive car you have there sir
Thanks you for the adjectives, more than I could think of. Appreciated Tony
Some cars with those kind of e.t. are a handful going down the track, but your Cougar looks like it makes clean, straight passes.
Thanks. Steers well, I’m surprised too. Could drink coffee going down.
Tim, youre a different human, in that Cougar. Sounds, like rear differential, to me.
It does, I agree. Will have more info tomorrow
That baby is in the groove man!
Oh Hell Yeah Paul. Hooking and cooking.
Definitely sounds like a drivetrain issue rather than the motor, it slowed down as you slowed down. Thought it might be the diff or a wheel issue.
Motor sounds really strong.
Yes engine runs too good and shifts perfectly. Yes diff issue?
Thanks
Your quite welcome
That pit crew wants to take over the wheel, pretty soon.
I know it’s exciting that would like this, how could you not right? Thanks Robert
She's a runner tim💪
I was thinking the same thing Marv
That appears to be a full body steel car leaving so hard on that combo, the front wheels come up. Nothing short of impressive! And you need a parachute but could street drive it .😂
It’s a fully body steel car but hood and I do street drive her. Thanks Willie
Good going Tim glad to see you got your hot rod to the track yeah high 8s would be amazing and a good stopping place. Best of luck 🤞
Thanks 👍 Hey you never know what is in the future Ronnie
I wish you the best on that 8 second time slip but without significant changes to an already pretty well sorted out car, especially at the performance level this thing is currently at, you won't be shedding 3 plus tenths out of it by just shock, carb and Caltrac bar adjustments, LOL. Good luck as always Tim.
I know Mike, titles can make a video go. I think the best it will do is 9.28. Now with this new set of problems. Have to wait until Fall. Thinking carbon fiber driveshaft too. Any experience?
Cleveland blocks are tuff as hell..I've built several. Ran 14s with one driven to the track in 72 mustang fastback.had a 400modified truck cam in it..they like to bend pushrods only trouble I encountered
They work well when prepared. Thanks Alan
You and your family have done a great job with this car, Tim. There are cars out there with superchargers and turbos having a hard time getting into the low 9's. I've always been a "dyed in the wool" Ford fan, and I've always loved the Clevelands. I may pull mine out of the Mustang in the fall, it's currently stock, but it does have a small harmonic vibration around 2400 rpm I've been chasing. A good excuse to pull it and put some goodies in it. Thanks for all you do, we do appreciate the videos and all the info you give us. I felt like I was riding right there with you on that in car video, man that thing was haulin'!
We thank you for watching and enjoying our family adventures. I am pretty proud of the old girl. She done good. I had a hard time believing that Cat cooked low 9s. Good luck with your build. Could be the balanced rubber shifted. Yes put some goodies in and eliminate the causes. Best in car vid I have seen. So clear and crisp sounding. Thanks.
I'm thinking Ring Gear My friend!
FATSNAKE!
That’s what I was thinking Fred. Got it out and clean. Wait until you find out what it was.
I've always loved the first generation Cougars. My first drag car( back in the latr '80s), was a '73 Cougar XR7. Pulled the 351 Cleveland and from a donor '65 T'Bird put in a 390(0.60) with a C6. All motor, no spray ran consistently 11.20s. Street car and it surprised alot of people on the street lol. Kick myself for selling it 😔. But yrs later got back into the scene with a '89 Foxbody GT model. I applaud you with such an amazing "Cat," beautiful car and all around bad ass!
Thanks for sharing your racing endeavors. That was pretty fast back in the day. Glad you were able to get back in it. The ol Cougar can hold her own. Appreciated 💯🏁
@@DragBoss351Cleveland You're welcome and yes Sir it was for back in the day. My Cougar and my buddies '73 Nova was always a good run. Usually came down to who got the better light and hooked. Everyone thought he ran a big block...nope. Just a mean, wicked 327 that hauled ass lol.
@nashvillelewis-jones5666 memories that will live on forever, bet you can still feel the sun, smell the car and engine.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Aaaah yes I can, with the smell of burnt rubber that lingered on me and way after I got home lol. My first pass I made I burnt up the stater. It wasn't a common set up having the 390 with 428 CJ heads. The Hooker headers were so tight I couldn't even get a heat shield on the starter. Thus 🔥. So on the trailer it went. Back at home in the garage my father stopped by and said in his day they'd wrap the starter in aluminum foil. I thought he was nuts! Nope I ran many seasons with the starter wrapped in aluminum foil 🤣. That 390 ran very hot, 170 then a 160 thermostat with 2 huge coolant fans and a radiator out of a 4x4 Ford truck, was only way to keep her happy. You know what I, you do what works and think outside the box lol.
@nashvillelewis-jones5666 that is the moral of the story Nash, do what works for you. She sounds like a real barn burner. Glad you can still remember the details. Fathers knows best, usually true.
great run Tim shame about the clunk, it seems like when you turned right it was really the loudest. good luck in finding the issue, hope its a easy fix
You’re right Craig. I found it. Stay tuned.
Your Daughter looks like she has an interest in Cars/Racing too , she's at the age to learn before Driving nice Run
Thanks William. Yes they are both coming around. See where it goes.
I think that is one bad cat. Nice run. Ronnie. Yeah, I heard that too, but just didn't want to say anything.
Thanks Ronnie, I wanted people to comment on the sound. Wait until you see what found
When you make your license runs make sure whoever signs as the witnesses actually have current licenses themselves. NHRA will check that. Follow the form's instructions to a T.
Sorry for your troubles!thanks for the clue.that could be anything from a parking paw to planetary gears.undo the drive shaft, put the trans in neutral, block your wheels!turn the output shaft and or drop the pan.
Already did that Michael. No noise in rearend spins free. No worries. As long as nothing blew I’m good. Finds the weak spots. Stay tuned
@@DragBoss351Cleveland just fyi the runout for the trans yoke is .050" at the ujoint.
@michaelclanton1152 I think movement in trans normal. Feels great and no binding. So I think it will be good to go. Wait until you see what it was.
Early in the video here but really anxious to see what you find. I heard it start about 3:00 in.
Yes, while slowing down I heard it, I will know tomorrow, stay tuned.
Ring and pinion, probably the pinion
That’s my thought.
Thinking too, but funny no noise otherwise.
Nice!😊 Ones personal safety is their own business. The idiots driving most roads are 100 times more dangerous than making a 9 sec pass at a dragstrip.
The truth speaks Terry. Appreciated
Murica F'Yeah!
That’s what I said, but with more F. Thanks John
Sounds to me like the rearend. What I could hear, it got slower as the car slowed down, and intensified as you turn
Yep right on. Be surprised soon
It sounds like something in the drivetrain or suspension possibly!? Nice pass!👍
Yes after I tore rear end apart, not there. But your onto to something. Thanks
Low 9s with no pants or gloves. Nice to see you and the track both taking safety seriously. 😕
Thanks Chad, your right need the gear. Safety first
If the sound is different turning than going straight im going with the rear end.
I think so too…
only noise I could hear sounded like a Detroit locker on its way out, the getpretty noisy when they need adjusting or rebuild
Nope. Run a spool
Cool Kitty 👍👍
Thanks Doug, and low 9 second kitty too
Bummer. Sounded like it was running clean too!
Sort of, nothing blew, and that is ok, ragged edge?
Iv heard that sound before. if I Rember right, Axle bearing, of a baring in the rear end. mine was an axle bearing. give it a good look.
So far all good. No rear end issues. But did find the problem. Thanks Laura stay tuned.
Nice Pass Tim.
I sounds like Ford 9 inch Ring and Pinion gave up the Ghost.
Are You using 8620 steel gearsets or 9310 Nickel Ring and Pinion Gears ?
The Cougar needs 9310 Nickel.
I bought a brand new quick performance, aluminum thru bolt, with a spool, and 35 spine axles. The gears are pro gears. thank you for watching very much appreciated.
I’m mad too Alaina I want to go for a ride to !
She did not know was broke, after hearing that she understood. Of course, Richard, you can go for a ride, let me fix it. thanks for being here.
Definitely sounds like drivetrain noise. Driveshaft/differential. I'll wait and find out😊
Believe me, I thought the same.
love the hood scoop i have a 5'' boss 9 bolt on fiberglass glastek hood for my 70 maverick
Where did you find a 5 inch Boss scoop?
@@DragBoss351Cleveland glasstek chicago
@huntsoramma thanks. Yes I have seen some of their products, nice finish. I did not see Boss 9 scoop, but that was 2012, when I got scoop/painted. I will check it out appreciated, hope you enjoy the channel. Lots to learn on the live chats
Turning the corner made me think that something in the axle flange mount to the rear end housing came loose. Or maybe yoke?
It does sound that way, but things are not as they appear. Sound travels?
It sounded like something in the rear at first, but it's difficult to tell by just listening on the video. Another nice run, though. Get it straightened out and that ".20" is right around the corner.
Sound is very fooling. I think we will be good to go. I think it may be around the corner.
Nice run Tim , I'm dealing with same exact noise from a Chevy 12 bolt rear end, haven't had time to tear it apart yet but I'm leaning towards rear end pinion, spider gears,or axle bearing, gonna check ujoints first and work my way back,, what's your pinion angle at ?
Pinion angle was -5. Rear out and all good.
Are those Race star wheels, Good luck 😅
Pro stars. Thank you. 🙏
Nice pass...A U-Joint can make a noise like that or the diff...If your running 4-wheel disk the calipers can also clank if they are loose...
All good thank god. Rear all good to, won’t believe it when you see the video
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Thanks for the up-date...
It sounds like it's something in the driveline.. when you slowed down and turned on redturn rd it got noticeably louder. Hard to guess over video, but that tailshaft all the way back to the diff should be severe duty.. i.e., 36 spline yoke to 3" chromoly driveshaft to 1350 yoke to the diff... I know you got this. I see you breaking into the 8s in 2024..
Your car is running killer and plenty of Hp, great job. Yes does sound like rear end noise. Yes all the good parts, not sure about 8s 9.20s I feel strongly about
Looks like your hook'in and cook'in with the new(er) spring setup. What ratings did you go with and how you like them compared to the old setup?
Front I have no idea, I can find out. If I loosened the shocks it would be dragging the bumper. Front coil over, love them.
Now you know im a mopar bracket racer. Im easy on rears 1.4 60'...low tire pressue. But b4 in my cougar i broke the infamous 9inch several, several times. Sounds like a tooth. Your heavy af. Id ask a heavy car guy with same 60' what and how long he gets with his rearend people. I carry 2) 456 spool pumpkins. Not using the brake, obivously, also helps. But i bet it will pickup et, because your using both pump shots also without the brake. Keep going.
Thank god no rearend issues, tires, axles or brakes. But I may get a center with 4.57 to try. Thanks for giving me some experience.
It happens eventually. No worries old Chum.
Family first: when you parked after the run, they both came running and clearly excited. Alaina’s disappointment is easy to understand. But it’s also a strong indication of how much she’s into the DragBoss scene now. I’m sure you remember a time not so long ago when she showed very little emotion. She will be all smiles again when she gets her well deserved ride.
About the run: From my armchair position, it was perfect in every way. Hit hard on launch, arrow straight trajectory and you hit the shifts with precise accuracy. Never better !
About the problem: At this moment I don’t know if you’ve nailed it down. The slop in the driveshaft narrows it way down. Your Moser differential is a strong piece but everything has a expiration date. If you need another differential in a hurry, maybe I can help.
As you know, my project is on hold. My new differential is still in its shipping container. It’s a Strange Pro Iron PRF120 complete assembly with optional upgrades : N1906 nodular case with 3.250” bearings for 35 spline axles, Daytona pinion support, 35 spline Eaton Detroit Locker , Chromoly pinion yoke , 1350 series u-joint . It has 4.11 gears made from an alloy compatible with street/strip abuse. The pinion depth was set and everything fully assembled by Strange techs. They’ve done a few more than myself 🤷♂️. I got a great deal buying direct from Strange Engineering.
Also P3504 axle package w/35 spline forged 1550 premium steel induction hardened axles with A1023 sealed ball bearings with forged aluminum retainer plates and upgraded chromoly studs installed by Strange.
The retainer plate and bearings size fits the Ford axle housing with small (Mustang/Cougar) ends. Easily changed if needed. I don’t remember your axle housing dimensions but these Strange 35 spline axles have a 1.56” diameter , length is 27.250” drivers side, 31.250” passenger side which is the standard length for many unmodified housings.
If your problem turns out to be rear end related and you can use any or all of these items, please call me.
At DBG, friends share 🏁.
Daniel, yes she understood after I told her what happened. I appreciate the offer, as that would bolt in and work with my 35 spline axles. But pulled rearend apart yesterday. Looks good. Currently I have a Yukon thru bolt aluminum center section, with spool. What you have is spectacular for the street. Bulletproof. May have a live chat tonight with the family ❤️😊
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Tim you’re a good dad and I knew she would be just fine after getting the facts.
I had just learned about your noisy discovery when I offered to help. If you had discovered the differential was wasted and you needed a quick replacement I had to make the offer. The wait time for certain parts is crazy nowadays. The Strange tech said not to be concerned about durability with my “street” setup until I exceeded 1600 horsepower. I’ll just hang onto it for now. No harm sitting in the sealed transport container. I’m familiar with that Yukon thru bolt alloy assembly. Super strong brute.
Hope to see the family tonight. Smiling always enlightens my spirit 🙂↔️
@danielwilson6665 thank you. Everyone is better after finding th source of of the noise. Working on video now. We discussed it and have decided to do tomorrow night at 7pm. So it should be very entertaining. May have to show pics of new engine going to get on Monday. Back to getting Cougar back together
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Tim I’m so glad you found the trouble. I’ve been snake bit with parts failures so many times that I tend to assume the worst. Just in case you didn’t know, when I offered my new Strange differential to you, it was intended to be a gift donation. I failed to indicate that and I don’t want you thinking that I was trying to make a quick buck by selling you something. I’m a lot of things but greedy bastard isn’t one of them. Friends and DBG matters.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing the next segment and finding out what the trouble is.
The new engine reveal will be spectacular.
See you then 🏁.
@danielwilson6665 thanks so much. Never thought any ill. Always good to know where I can get something if I need it. Yes I just posted video and see what the issue was. Wtf 😊
Take tranny issue over engine issue everytime! Huge fan Tim! Division 3 finals is in Norwalk this year. If I make a team would be cool to meet you and have you check out my 67 galaxie 500 bracket car! Good luck with everything
Ok Bubba, I’m in. Thanks for being a fan, cause you’re the man. Love those Galaxies, good luck and chop down that tree.
that car is fast ! what gear are you running to turn 8400 rpms on the top end ?
Thank you. Currently running 4.71, previously ran 4.86 for 20 years.
I think something in the rear end....I don't know what you have in the center section....a broken Detroit locker or axle at the end of the spines if it's a spool....or a loose nut behind the wheel....lol
Loose but behind the wheel, ✅ it was a fairly new Yukon thru bolt aluminum case, 35 spline, spool. Yep sure sounds like it 🏁🇺🇸Ed
I set up gears....About 20 years ago we changed to 5:13 for 1/8 mile finals, 8 3/4 MOPAR ...we broke 3 teeth off of ring gear ....it was a defective heat treat....on a full batch...Richmond's....Moser engineering said my set-up was spot on.....they said the phone was ringing off the hook that Monday morning...so you're may nto be the only one...they gave us everything we needed...it broke the low roller clutch in Trans....happen at the line without a transbrake
@edcase3767 well we will all be surprised when you see what happened. Never changed gears in any center section. Always bought quality assembled. Looking at this, not much too it.
❤
In 1981 I owned a 69 Cougar with a 351 windsor with a 512 lift 292 duration cam and a Edelbrock Streetmaster intake with a 700 Holley Double Pumper Carburetor with Hooker Super Competition Headers a Toploader 4 speed wide ratio and 3.00 gears and 1st to 2nd gear at 6000 rpm it would break the driver's side motor mount I chained the engine down only to find it would snap the rear lugnuts off the wheel it didn't matter which side one time it would be the left wheel another time it would be the right wheel so I always carried studs and lugnuts with me and would put them in along the road if I really got on it but as a street car there was no Chevy small block that would outrun that Cougar as it would run 80 mph in 2nd gear and 3rd was 120 mph and 4th I could never find Top End as around 140 mph the front of the car would get to floating and you couldn't keep it on the road in a straight line!!! I sure do miss that old Cougar!!
Dedicated to the cause my brother. Sounds like a powerhouse. I would love to have a 67 xr7 4 speed.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland There is nothing like the looks of a Cougar except a 65 Mustang which I own now and a 66 Fairlane which I traded my Cougar off on in the early 1980's and no longer own the Fairlane either
@dennisthomas4766 Dennis Ingot to say Cougar looks way better than a 65 Mustang, jmo. Thanks for watching and enjoying the race
if its loose there its loose at the other end too good run 🇺🇸
Great run. Then after pulling rear dam loose shock. 😳
Awesome Tim. Wondering about the flywheel or at least in that area? Could be anything that came loose or bolts broken. No big deal.
no does not seem like that at all more trans and rear end regions
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Yep that's what I get making a comment before the video is over. LOL
@@dondotterer24 lol, can you tell its from the rear?
@@DragBoss351Cleveland I'm not a Ford guy. But I'm with you sounded more of a thinner metal sound?
@dondotterer24 wait until you find out what it is
My first thought is something in the rear end. Does it have a locker or a spool? How big are the axles? Are they like 31, 33, or 35 spline?
Spool with 35 spline axles.
Sounds like was when you hit a bump
Small blocks rock
Kick big block ass with r.p.ms
I will do my best.
Split shell gear / carrier assembly? Not much C-4 experience, for me.
Possible. Seems more in rear though. A lot of play in rotation of driveshaft back and forth
What's car dyno at the wheel. What transmission and stall. What cam specs
Rear end
That’s possible. But no noise otherwise?
Ring and pinion
Sounds like something in there.
Yeah, there would be minimal load on the gears on the drive back vs slowing down and highest when turning.
@danmyers9372 true. But you would think hear grinding or some other noise.
Broken something in the rear end. Do you run a good full spool?
Fairly new maybe 15 passes on Yukon thru bolt with spool and 35 spline axles
That noise is the sound of money falling from your wallet into someone else's hands. Sounds like you've pulled some teeth off the crown wheel as it's at about wheel speed. What people don't realise is that the shorter your gears, the smaller the pinion diameter becomes, so the pinion digs deeper into the root of the tooth
Luckily no money needed, just some time. When you find out what it was as I did, after I pulled the rear end and axles apart. Start with quality to prevent failure, is how I think about it.
Did you feel the clunk as well as hear it?
No not at all. That’s the strange part.
Rear end noise or drive line issue?
That’s what I think.
Was that not a red light i saw?😊
Could be 😉
Are you running a Detroit locker ?
That's exactly what it sounds like but, he runs a spool.
Spool
Sounds like the diff to me😢
It sure does, but nope.
I have a NEW Jerico clutchless you can run, you will not break that. Put you in the high 8s
To tell you the truth. That thought crossed my mind. Need to get GForce for wife, bet they would give a deal if I got two. But then again, so used to this trans. I doubt I couldn’t break that trans. Appreciated Racer. Do you think my dyno numbers are correct now?
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Correct for the Dyno you ran it on, yes The true dyno is your MPH, does that work out correct?
@racerd9669 I have to say it does from memory. Right now pulled rear and axles and all good. Found the issue ….stay tuned.
Don't think it's the rear differential, sounds like something came loose somewhere.

just watched the end of your video. disregard my last statement.
Why disregard it?
@@DragBoss351Cleveland I jumped to assumption, That the clunk when you slowed down an turn axle bearing. When I watched the rest of the video an you turned the driveshaft. nope not an axle bearing. My first thought was broken ring gear or teeth off of pinion, or a broken clutch basket in transmission. I'm very interested in the out come. Fyfi I'm in Norwalk just south of you. you probably go by my house if you go through Norwalk to the track
@laurafreeze2861 I thought all of that too and to find the loose shock. Oh well. Good to see you live close to track too.
Check rear end and torque converter bolts.
Loose shock can you believe it?
Thank God that's all it was . I'm a Chevy guy but is a real fan . I love what you are doing. By the way , I met and is still fascinated with all that Bob Glidden accomplished. Keep up the fantastic work.
@melvincordier8058 thanks Chevy guy. Appreciated. Been raining past couple of days. So back together. Changing trans fluid, to inspect pan. And test tonight.
@DragBoss351Cleveland Be careful, and looking forward to your next videos.
@melvincordier8058 worked out well , 1.25 50 ft. Thanks Melvin
universal joint
Nope, I wish
@@DragBoss351ClevelandTrans or pinion yolk?
@@roberthill2219 ?Both? stay tuned
@@DragBoss351Cleveland That's not good... did you miss the pinion angle?
@@roberthill2219 Nope -5 degrees
broken axle
Don't think so, drives well, like nothing is wrong, no vibration.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland I have seen them break a shaft and sound like that.broke off clean at the spline
I was just behind in the opposite lane and witnessed a 71' 4sp Boss 351 snap an axel.
That was one badass Mustang!
Something in the rear diff. The noise seemed worse when you were slowing down and even louder when you were going around a turn. I’m thinking you either broke some teeth off the ring and/or pinion.
@nonenone1249 both tires turn together and no noise driving.
I think its an axle
I thought more of pinion gear
No exhaust pipes...Definitely not California. The fumes must be bad when street driving. Run some 3 inch exhaust all the way back
Hell No, not that state of chaos. No fumes whatsoever.
@@DragBoss351ClevelandWhat fuel are you using, e85?
@@maximusvonce1381 Q16
@@DragBoss351ClevelandDamn that's expensive. I run e85
@@maximusvonce1381 thats ok, I like the smell
Need to get yourself a built TH400 in there, Boss!
Not yet, C4 is holding its own.
Put a glide in it
Nope never.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland be faster and way less expensive than weak c4 and you have enough hp to move it.the only way your going to run a 3 speed in that car is a c6 get a Frank Merkel brake full roller it and let it eat. If Frank can run low 7s and high 6s with a c6 it proves it strong enough
@randybichsel4597 been racing this same transmission and Convertor for 25 years. Hard to give up. I used to and still have a C6 hanging in the corner. But ….
Awesome pass Tim. The car sounds awesome! Breaking stuff is part of the course. Find it fix it and forget it. I’d like to see you get into the high 8’s. Give me something stellar to shoot for when I finally get the Galaxie finished. 🫵😎
Went dark on FB for awhile. To much negativity. To much BS.
I’ll be following here instead.

Thanks Tony. Luckily nothing when you find out what it is. I’m thinking 20s about the best with current combo. But I have been wrong before. Yes work on that Galaxie, and get R done. Glad you’re here.
