Spark vs Cobalt was the most intense race I've seen in a while. Those two making eye contact on launch was absolutely hilarious. "YOU'RE DONE!"
I know the feeling of getting smacked down by a sleeper. We were in high-school. I think it was 92'. A friend of mine had an 86 Mustang GT. 5.0 manual with a Paxton. Pretty much had his way with most anything on the street around town. One day, we were antagonizing this old guy in the lane next to us by looking over at him while revving the engine. He was in this beat up rusted out Dodge half ton. He didn't seem to acknowledge us at all. Light turns green, my friend guns it. Low and behold, the old guy does too and he's staying with us. Then he begins to pull away. He beat us to the next stop light by 4-5 car lengths. When we pulled up next to him at the next light he was looking over at us with this big shit-eating grin on his face. My friend yelled over and asked "what do you got in that thing?" The guy just smiles and says, "A big motor" before turning right and continuing on his way. It's definitely a shocking experience being humbled by a car that looks like it belongs in the scrap yard.

My dad has a story like this. He was 19 and had a 1976 camaro with a 4 speed and 400 small block with good heads and big cam. Pulled next to some old fart in a 70ish monte carlo with a tiny 454 badge on the fender. My dad kept revving at him and let it go on green. Well the monte pulled away from him like he was standing still and the old dude still wouldnt look over at him at the next light. That was around 86-87
My dad had an old f100 like that, thing had more panels missing from rust than it did solid ones, but it would simply haul ass. His friend had some hopped up Chevy with a crazy loud Quadra jet 4 barrel and about shit himself when he got roasted by a pile of rust with a motor in it 😂

I’ve been building Fairmonts since 1989 (specifically wagons because they’re the ultimate sleeper) but Jackstand got himself the original Fox setup (1978 Ford utilized the new Fairmont to test the fox chassis… of course complete success), and everything that bolts onto a Mustang, bolts on the Fairmont. Just 10” longer underneath the rear seat area than a fox Mustang.
Anyway, I get the LS power plant because we can only bend JS so far towards the light before he harkens to the call of Darth Vader (the Chevrolet brother’s Godfather).
Anyway, Cletus, you and the gang are truly the most well-oiled and interesting crew on UA-cam. God bless you all and from Texas… a big helping of, “hell ya, brother!”
A suggestion for the next spectator drags: How about you set yourself up as a “bounty” against any bye runs. If they lose, they still move on to next round, but if they win, they cash out the bounty. You could keep increasing the bounty thru the rounds until someone beats you. If no one wins, you could either save the bounty money for the next race, or distribute the bounty to the. Top 3.
This way it’s fair to the rest of the racers, and if someone manages to get lucky, they can get some cash and bragging rights!

6 months later, my brother and I swapped in an EFI 5.0l (302) with a 5-Speed Transmission and a 9" Differential (and better Suspension).
That car scared the living crap out of me as I was only 18yo...
2 weeks later, I Totalled it off a 300' embankment without personal injury.

Kyle switched to a single precision turbo to get the world record he only did twins to make it unique you don't gain anything, twins work well on V engines because there's two cylinder banks with two exaust sides. With twins on a inline engine one turbo is always going to get more exhaust gas.

@@rezi420 I think at times when he isnt on as much , its because he is actually working with the guys at the shop on the cars. We get to see Cleetus running around giving us updates of a few minutes of their daily affairs but not a ton of in shop work.

My first car was a 1981 Ford Fairmont. I bought in in 1994 for $300 before I actually had my drivers' license. It was a retired Dept of Agriculture car and was specially ordered with the 4-cylinder engine (the same 4-banger that the late 70's and early 80's mustangs came with). The car would top out on the highway at about 65 with my foot in the floor. I have so many great memories of that car.

That Fairmont looks JUST like my grandmother's old 1978 Mercury Zephyr, except hers was Dark Blue Irid and it had a 3.3L 200 inline six with a three speed auto. That beast put out 85 HP and 154 lb ft...
