Karl Pilkington is such an enigma. He's so clever but he doesn't think he is. He's humble and thoughtful but still unpolished and impatient. He is such a universal character. He would make a fantastic protagonist in a Sartre play.
I mean sympathetic, not universal. He's always battling something, whether it be internal or external. He is so good at revealing the way his brain works. I love to analyze him. He fascinates me.
He's incredibly likeable and has common sense, I wouldn't say he is particularly intelligent. This is the guy who thought a stick insect was born when a bug had sex with a leaf.
I agree that he is intelligent - he is just in a constant first principle way of thinking. I think what people classify as intelligent in general is faulty - intelligence is the flexibility of the brain on analyzing and solving problems and not on how much you know about the world - cause if the latter is true then by effort, everyone can be intelligent
Karl is one of the most aware, curious people I have ever heard of. I would never consider his life to be boring. The last guy was extremely rude, weird, judgemental and insulting (albeit honest) to the beauty that defines Karl.
The Socrates quote "Wisdom is knowing how little we know" and everything the guy said about programmed intellect and not being open really applies to the 'intelligent' people in this video who just shut out Karl.
I was sat here thinking about all the xfm episodes where Ricky screamed at Karl for being an idiot meanwhile Ricky was spouting nonsense about platyhelminths and atheism n that
On the other hand, if you are too open minded, you never get snywhere because there are so many ideas to explore. In the end you need to decide in which direction your thought process should go so you evolve.
What I love about the convo with David Icke is he talks about keeping an open mind, then regales Karl wit hthe virtue of not listening to anyone who thinks you're wrong and only believing what you think is right. Just...amazing silliness.
he wants us to have an open mind to watch his videos and buy his books, but he doesn't keep an open mind when people explain why he is wrong. pathetic.
jimmy2k4o Don't fall into the trap of condemning conspiracy theorists.. we have been programmed to do that. That is exactly how we have been deceived.. How are you ever going to know if society is being deceived when you condemn people pointing out we are being deceived?
MisterFuturtastic i do believe in some conspiracies, 9/11, the gutting of the education system so the public are easier to manipulte, but lots of it is no better than creationism, you cant have a constantly open mind, you let ideas in you think about them and you either accept or reject it, you don't need to re-evauate nonsense everyday. also some are dangerious and spawned out of ignorance and paranioa like vaccinations are deadly or chemtrails etc lots of it is just crap.
Am I the only one who thinks that having a beer with Icke wouldn't be such a bad experience. I know about all his kooky beliefs, but he came off as much more likable and (surprisingly) down to earth, compared to some of the others.
I think it might actually be alright. It's fun learning about things people believe when it's on a face to face and not on a down their nose at you level. He seemed pretty nice.
MisterFuturtastic I think that could be possible, but because he is right about so many things, it just seems that too much correct info is being revealed for it to be disinformation. But then you look at it from another angle: why hasn't he been bumped off by these elites? Personally I think it would be too obvious and they don't or can't, but regardless, his shit is interesting to listen to.
Jordan Dodd That is what makes the disinfo so good though is to mix it with real info. It takes people off the real trail because he gains followers AND it makes it so people in the mainstream ignore the true info he provides. He is discrediting conspiracy theorists intentionally. But someone also brought up the possibility that someone from the elite tricked Icke by making him believe this reptilian stuff to make Icke discredit himself.
Your latter possibility is what I would think if Icke isn't legit, if anything. I don't watch his stuff any more, but for me he kick started a personal fascination with the universe and quantum physics. You want to talk about disinformation then lets talk about Alex Jones and his ilk! People like that almost always have their own selfish agenda, as they are basically fear-mongers saying everything is a conspiracy while at the same time offering ZERO solution. I'm sure Icke is loaded now, but how long has he been on this stuff, adding to as he goes? 25 years now? That sort of constant exposure kinda separates him from others, as a 25 year long 'plot' of any kind would be hard to maintain.
17:50 Ok, I meet people like this at school who are equally as pretentious; he does some unnecessary ball head thing on Karl to, of course, seem smart and, as a bonus, comments on some imaginary gap in his brain. Karl takes a pipe, as directed. To that, Will mentions some Tony Ben to, again, sound smart and, again as a bonus, openly assumes Karl's ignorance for not knowing of this person. When Karl asks the question, "does intelligence equal happiness", Will claims it's not for him to judge, moments after calling Karl ignorant. The "fuck off" comment was just the tip of the iceberg. There are pretentious people everywhere. In fact, I've just sat here, typing a long opinion to make myself seem smart. No denial. But Will was very self-entitled and probably proud of what he said. I think Karl Pilkington is cool.
+Corbin Murray yeah I guess you writing this long ass opinion was saying "Hey I know what you doing guy, don't think you are getting away with it" but it also was to moan as well so I don't necassarily think it was 100% a pretentious comment you wrote just to make yourself look smarter. I think it's also a comment that is similar to Karl's moanings hence genuine. now on the other hand me writing this acknowledgment, it's just showing off... lol
Karl is actually really patient and very kind he doesn't even care if people call him ''stupid'' he forgives straight away. I know if someone called me stupid i'd be offended.
Holy Wow, this was brilliant. One of the best Karl's shows. And I have been watching/listening his stuff for 5 years now. I don't know how I missed a video uploaded in 2012. Sort yourself out, UA-cam.
Karl's thought process is truly unique. He's able to see the world the way a child would, but at the same time, with an insight that children lack. Ricky and Steven laugh at him, but try to come up with the thoughts, ideas, and insights Karl comes up with- it's really, really difficult.
Some of the things Karl has said on the radio over the years really show genius in him. He comes at different issues from such a strange angle that most people would never ever be able to do. I always burst out laughing at the things he says, but then sit back and shake my head in amazement at how he was able to think about it in such a lateral and original way.
@@ihatespam2 I think one time he talked about future technology, glasses that display a different reality to what's real. some technogy has been developing towards that with VR headsets being an example.
I'd rather spend a day with Karl than the pipe guy, any day of the week. Karl seems like a really nice and genuine guy, and the way he looks at life and says things are really genius/humorous
The way Karl asks questions isn't exactly like Socrates but I think a lot of the questions he poses can be asked today and can lead to more understanding. It is a slight bit of thinking outside of the box. While sometimes you might want to blow him off completely he does ask questions that could lead to a better understanding of philosophy. AT the very least he challenges some of the steadfast philosophical questions. While he might not be the greatest mind I think that people with questions like his should at the very least have their questions considered.
I mean, he was pretty obviously playing it up for the camera, and their parting where Will was talking about stripping Karl and gently cleaning him in a bath was fucking hilarious.
this is amazing. Karl's mind just works so differently I don't think it makes sense to measure his intelligence the same way we do with the rest of humanity.
That last guy really embodies what Icke was saying to him earlier, such a pompous prick, totally identified with his 'intellect,' not 'having time' for Karl, to understand him, let alone to help him
I love seeing Karl riding on his BMX bike around town where he lived, it makes me feel happy. You can still see the childlike freedom in Karl, he's not entirely spoiled by getting older like most people get. Think young, stay young :)
I love how much Karl is like a little kid with the first woman: "Are you gonna cut into that?" "No, it's gotta cool down first. But you can take it home if you like." "What, can I? All of it?"
Just watching for the 1st time - so amazing this was made. Karl's a great sport and so smart for letting his idiocy become a money maker for him - and a hilarity maker for all of us. Thanks for posting this piece. Love how each person he visited got a serious taste of how kooky his noggin' is LOL. Wonderful. Thanks Karl.
Karl is a gem. He's not a fount of knowledge but his brain works in the most weird and wonderful way. The world would be much poorer without Karl, just the way he is.
He's also incredibly honest about himself and calm when being verbally attacked. Karl makes me realise how differently a brain can work, it's actually kind of beautiful how he relates to other things.
It's 2023 and Karl is now a millionaire! And - he's apparently going to be starring in a new comedy about his life, if he hadn't met Ricky and Stephen. So for someone that teachers said wouldn't be a, 'high flyer', he's done quite well!!😄😂
2:11 typical Karl, tries the left door-closed, then uses the right door. Next door tries the right-closed, have to use the left. Small things like this… 🤣🤣
I would rather spend a day with Karl than that last person. Karl is refreshingly honest and down to earth. He is not stupid he just thinks different to some people.
21:50, claims to be intelligent, claims to know what is and isn't the meaning of life. I thought part of intelligence was considering multiple viewpoints.
I will never get sick of this video :D As odd as it sounds, watching karl pilkington videos, always gives me feel confident, and more better bout myself
I think someone like Socrates would commend Karl for admitting that, like Socrates himself, admitting that all he knows is he knows nothing at all. Something tells me it would be harder for these intellectuals to admit that.
Actually, that's arguable. According to the Dunning-Kruger effect, you'd on average expect intelligent people to undervalue themselves. And unskilled/unintelligent people would overestimate their abilities because they'd fail to see their own ineptitude. In order to examine this though, you'd have to define carefully what you mean by intelligence/skill
I find it amazing how the last guy is so condescending and tries to tell Karl what life is about. Meanwhile, judging from the obscene success of the Ricky Gervais podcasts, Karl's shows, and the nature of the comments in this video, Karl positively impacts countless more people than that last guy ever will. To me, Karl Pilkington is the funniest person that has ever lived, and one of the most interesting: think about it, how many other people do you listen to as often just to hear their everyday banter? Whether or not he's conventionally "intelligent," his impact can't be denied, and as misanthropic and cynical as he can be, I'm sure his impact is enough to make him happy.
+Justin Fa that is because the world is filled with morons who desperately need to find someone to act the fool to reassert their intelligence. doesn't make karl smart or stupid, just proves the point that acting like a complete idiot generally makes you a more popular person.
This is so authentic David icke and karl so unexpected that conversation this dawns to a different cultural age that with new light the reflection still has some sparkle and shine.
I like Karl. He's honest, humble, and open. Garnering from other things he's said in the podcast, like "do your bit"- he's also kind. The world needs more like him, and less like the arrogant ass at the end, who serves no real purpose at all. At least Karl is relating to people, and getting us to think about what good intelligence does- thats something very worthwhile! I feel the way to live smartly, is to be like the woman he first interviewed: kind, and able to laugh- this will lead to the best life for yourself and others. No matter how intelligent, try to not forget your heart.
Never heard of the bloke at the end, whereas Karl’s an icon and a household name, in spite of his below average intelligence. Karl’s right again. Play a record
Will is a prime example of why "smart" people often come off as unlikable. I read an article not too long ago about political candidates that I think applies to people in general, the more intellectual they sound, the more unlikable they are. Considering the average IQ is 100 it makes sense. If you're not taking into consideration who you're talking to, you can often sound like you're talking "down" to them.
I don't know why, but seeing Karl zoom along on the BMX bike like he was a kid made me feel kind of happy. It was a really cute way of bringing us back to his past when he was a kid, where we get to see the school where he grew up & all. When they get Karl away from Ricky & Steve, he seems sort of sad. Karl needs to hang out with someone like David Ike, who had the best message of all: "fuck 'em." He had ALL the answers. "Wisdom is knowing how little we know." People who think they know
Karl is so genuine and down to earth, putting happiness in front of intelligence and experience. He lives how he wants to live, and he enjoys it, even though he lives a basic routine day to day, that's how he likes and wants to live. Karl is surprisingly a lot more open minded and probably smarter then a lot of us. He's not book smart he's more spiritually connected and smart in that sense, he knows exactly what's going on.
I love Karl Pilkington. As Ricky Gervais says, he's in awe of the world if it's furry. He's much like a child, a lot of common sense, but very little knowledge of the world. He can be perceived as stupid, but is very receptive to information, he likes to learn, even though most of what he learns is rubbish.
There are many many Karl's in this world, we just got to meet this one....and loved him. So glad he went to see David, he gave him some good info. Just be yourself Karl, that's what we love you for.
I think the guy at the end - Will - did hit the nail on the head though. He pointed out that Karl really didn't want to be more knowledgeable... he didn't want to be like everyone else. The key is that Karl is just stubborn. For some reason he doesn't want to deal with conventional intellectualism. And you can see that about him.. he is very frustrated and negative about the way people think. That's not necessarily a bad thing to want to be an individualist.. a lot of good things can come from that. We need people that go against the grain of conventional society.
"he is very frustrated and negative about the way people think." I think that applies much more to Will than it does to Karl. Karl was open to try and learn from these other people and see what they had to say, how they think etc. while most of them quickly got frustrated with his way of thinking and shut him out. No patience, no desire to learn from him or understand him, they seem like the stubborn ones to me. Idk.
His outlook on life is his own. Simplicity doesn't indicate a lack of intelligence. It makes the man who he is. An individual. Those who would interpret that as stupidity are incapable of seeing anything beyond their own pretentious self centered lives anyway. We're all wired differently.
This has made more sense to me about so many difficult questions of life than most people I know. I think somehow that was the hidden message of the show.
I think Karl's mindset is way ahead of all of us. An inevitable consequence of taking on the challenges in life, is a gradually depleting sense of happiness. No matter how successful you are in your career, you will never sleep at night with the peace of having an angel by your bedside, watching over you. He's managed to keep a chunk of his childhood intact. I'm sure we'd be best friends if we ever met. 😂
I think Karl could be a catalyst for a Genius. Which he may be for Ricky. And I mean catalyst in every sense of the word. He changes things around him while remaining unchanged.
I think the scene with Karl and the woman making bread is the best. He gets along better with the guy on the beach, but they are far more similar than different. It is obvious that the professor just completely walking out on him and the last scene with the writer are utterly pointless. The conversation with the woman was what this documentary was going for. Despite their huge differences in intelligence...they can still be civil and have humorous conversation.
How do you know what the documentary was going for, I'd argue that because the documentary was edited by those making it and they included the less than harmonious interactions that it isn't what they were going for.,
I really hate that the people get annoyed with Karl when he asks questions, even when some are silly questions such as the 'drawings of aliens' and such. There's no need to get annoyed. Just take the time to calmly explain your reasoning. Those kinds of reactions from so-called 'intellectuals' are exactly the reason some people are too scared of asking and seeking out new knowledge or coming up with new ideas. It's just stomping all over people, and shows closed-minded arrogance. Germaine Greer makes a good point about the difference between being clever and intelligent. Not everyone has the academic intelligence yet can still be smart
intellectuals should have to spend time pandering to morons, they stuck in at school and learned the basics, when people like karl pissed about, now he decides he wan't to learn things, or not if you believe when he's talking to will self , he gets confused by concepts of evolution and intellectuals have to spend time re-teaching him what he should have learned in school, and you expect this not to annoy them? cmon.
Karl's appeal has nothing to do with intelligence. We like him because he's genuine. Most people, myself included, wear a mask of the person they want others to see. What you see with Karl is the real person.

yes I met her once she's a very nice lady
She's anything but nice. Loud mouth fool.
Despite the the comment people make, he is a very observant and intelligent guy.
He's incredibly likeable and has common sense, I wouldn't say he is particularly intelligent. This is the guy who thought a stick insect was born when a bug had sex with a leaf.
@@johnnyjohnny6174 maybe he was just joking.
He's an old soul, lot of wisdom
dude was intense, wasn't he
The Socrates quote "Wisdom is knowing how little we know" and everything the guy said about programmed intellect and not being open really applies to the 'intelligent' people in this video who just shut out Karl.
well said mate
@@Sambamoller well commented
I was sat here thinking about all the xfm episodes where Ricky screamed at Karl for being an idiot meanwhile Ricky was spouting nonsense about platyhelminths and atheism n that
On the other hand, if you are too open minded, you never get snywhere because there are so many ideas to explore. In the end you need to decide in which direction your thought process should go so you evolve.
What I love about the convo with David Icke is he talks about keeping an open mind, then regales Karl wit hthe virtue of not listening to anyone who thinks you're wrong and only believing what you think is right. Just...amazing silliness.
that's david icke for you, infact most conspiracy freaks are like that.
he wants us to have an open mind to watch his videos and buy his books, but he doesn't keep an open mind when people explain why he is wrong. pathetic.
He was saying not to listen to people who are negative about having an open mind.
jimmy2k4o Don't fall into the trap of condemning conspiracy theorists.. we have been programmed to do that.
"do you want to read the tractatus Logico-Philosophicus"
"maybe not to start with"
Karl is a genius hahahha
Will Smith is a self-satisfied, pompous plonker ,always has been horrible to Karl, who is a real person and an original thinker
Am I the only one who thinks that having a beer with Icke wouldn't be such a bad experience. I know about all his kooky beliefs, but he came off as much more likable and (surprisingly) down to earth, compared to some of the others.
Icke is right about many things.. but he seems to be wrong about many things too. It's possible he is spreading disinformation intentionally.
I think it might actually be alright. It's fun learning about things people believe when it's on a face to face and not on a down their nose at you level. He seemed pretty nice.
MisterFuturtastic
I think that could be possible, but because he is right about so many things, it just seems that too much correct info is being revealed for it to be disinformation.
I think it's also a comment that is similar to Karl's moanings hence genuine.
now on the other hand me writing this acknowledgment, it's just showing off... lol
Asil Veral Admittedly, I guess we're all guilty. :)
Easier just to head butt them mate, makes you feel much better
It was a complete piss take, you fool!
He is clearly being humourous and dong a 'bit' during the whole segment......
Karl is actually really patient and very kind he doesn't even care if people call him ''stupid'' he forgives straight away. I know if someone called me stupid i'd be offended.
I’ve had the biggest ole crush on Karl for so long ❤
Holy Wow, this was brilliant.
Its called brain damage.
Some of the things Karl has said on the radio over the years really show genius in him. He comes at different issues from such a strange angle that most people would never ever be able to do. I always burst out laughing at the things he says, but then sit back and shake my head in amazement at how he was able to think about it in such a lateral and original way.
Name one genius idea he’s had.
Pocket tie
@@ihatespam2 I think one time he talked about future technology, glasses that display a different reality to what's real. some technogy has been developing towards that with VR headsets being an example.
@@Tawhiri that proves it
Did she just say "can I make this FUCKING bread?" 4:46
+Akupara1 yes lmfao
Hahahah
+Akupara she sounds Australian, if so.. im not surprised
A perfect example that IQ is one of the crudest measurements of human brilliance
Pure intellectual 'superiority' often has a dismissive, cruel feeling. Emotional Intelligence is somewhat lacking in Will Self.
I'd rather spend a day with Karl than the pipe guy, any day of the week. Karl seems like a really nice and genuine guy, and the way he looks at life and says things are really genius/humorous
"It's not my fault, it's my brains fault" is THE most Karl thing I've ever heard. Glorious ❤
Karl is a beautiful human being. His kind is rare.. inspiring.
While he might not be the greatest mind I think that people with questions like his should at the very least have their questions considered.
truly intelligent people don't have to portray the kind of image Will did
I mean, he was pretty obviously playing it up for the camera, and their parting where Will was talking about stripping Karl and gently cleaning him in a bath was fucking hilarious.
Hated him
this is amazing. Karl's mind just works so differently I don't think it makes sense to measure his intelligence the same way we do with the rest of humanity.
Stephen Merchant was always worried about the pipe going out of style. Look at this bloke keeping the tradition alive.
the last guy is probably someone he puts up with all the time, he did well getting through it without being offended
That last guy really embodies what Icke was saying to him earlier, such a pompous prick, totally identified with his 'intellect,' not 'having time' for Karl, to understand him, let alone to help him
his answer about what he would have learned in school if he'd paid more attention was the smartest answer I've ever heard, honestly
The Will dude is a comedian. He's acting tongue in cheek. Just search for Will Self Shooting Stars on UA-cam. You'll see the character he portrays.
I love seeing Karl riding on his BMX bike around town where he lived, it makes me feel happy. You can still see the childlike freedom in Karl, he's not entirely spoiled by getting older like most people get. Think young, stay young :)
I work with a guy who is eerily similar to Karl, and it’s one of the few good things about my job.
I love Karl.. he calms my mind and I'm in a better space after a listen..
That last guy is a loon
nope, scam artist
+herpderpmonkey exactly. His assessment seemed to be based off of outdated science
its telly ya twat
Long live Karl! May his round-headedness and hilarious thoughts be around to cheer us up for years to come :)
Karl is very smart. He can see the wisdom and stupidity in everything. His comic interpretation is genius.
I love how much Karl is like a little kid with the first woman:
"Are you gonna cut into that?"
"No, it's gotta cool down first. But you can take it home if you like."
"What, can I?
Some how Karl gives me the feeling that every things going to be okay.Thank you Karl. : )
So for someone that teachers said wouldn't be a, 'high flyer', he's done quite well!!😄😂
He was great in Derrick
Dope! Always happy to hear about some new Karl material.
I don't care how "smart" karl is he seems like a great man. I would be honored to meet him.
Thanks for uploading, what an absolutely heartwarming feature, Karl is my hero
21:50, claims to be intelligent, claims to know what is and isn't the meaning of life. I thought part of intelligence was considering multiple viewpoints.
” Just when you see them, they look sort of really futuristic “. Amazing
karl pilkington is a kid at heart, he is brilliant
I will never get sick of this video :D
As odd as it sounds, watching karl pilkington videos, always gives me feel confident, and more better bout myself
I could watch Karl and the bread woman for at least 8 hours a day
Dropping the Ikeman suddenly in this was terrific.
I love Karl...truly a role model for me.
I honestly believe Karl is extremely intelligent. He just thinks differently.
Never heard of the bloke at the end, whereas Karl’s an icon and a household name, in spite of his below average intelligence. Karl’s right again. Play a record
Need more of karl talking to "intelligent" people
Will is a prime example of why "smart" people often come off as unlikable. I read an article not too long ago about political candidates that I think applies to people in general, the more intellectual they sound, the more unlikable they are. Considering the average IQ is 100 it makes sense. If you're not taking into consideration who you're talking to, you can often sound like you're talking "down" to them.
Karl is so funny. I love his Idiot Abroad travel show on TV! I would watch so many episodes of that.
"Wisdom is knowing how little we know." People who think they know
"He's a fridge-fixer......" 😄😄😄 Epic, honestly....! Love him to bits....! ❤️
I dont thing Karl is stupid at all.He is just bloody honest and says what he thinks and he aint a pretender.I wish more people would be like him!
I love Karl.....there are different types of intelligents and Karl's intelligents is my favorite....❤ I could listen to him all day.......
I flatter myself by thinking i'm something of a smart guy, and i'd love to sit in a pub with Karl.
He's not book smart he's more spiritually connected and smart in that sense, he knows exactly what's going on.
alright jeremy
Karl is a lovely fellow. Ricky Gervais is lucky to have him as his best mate.
I have never related to Karl more watching this!
Idk.
Fernando Z I agree with you there. I thought the same thing about how Karl had some good points and they had no response. haha
The guy at the end is a psychopath. Thank God Karl got out of there alive. I felt he was evil.
His outlook on life is his own. Simplicity doesn't indicate a lack of intelligence. It makes the man who he is. An individual. Those who would interpret that as stupidity are incapable of seeing anything beyond their own pretentious self centered lives anyway. We're all wired differently.
Karl makes me feel less lonely. I love him.
This has made more sense to me about so many difficult questions of life than most people I know. I think somehow that was the hidden message of the show.
Karl is smart enough to have many think he's stupid and make loads of money out of it.
The irony of not opening the doors 1st time, when coming out of mensa test.
Gotta love karl
KARL, "Humour is the hidden wisdom," You are wise. Intelligence you are born with, like being creative.
The title is very fitting. He fits into the archetype role of "The Fool" beautifully!
1. Karl is amazing. 2. The author he met with who smoked a pipe is an absolute snobby knobhead. Karl is a treasure.
Authenticity. As a Special Ed teacher in the states......Karl is very smart.
I would not hold back on my foot coming down upon the head of the last guy on there.
An over active mind will likely drive you mad.
When you learn to quiet your mind you will see truth with your soul and feel peace in your heart.
How do you quiet your mind?
great soundtrack that, real genius behind that
I think Karl could be a catalyst for a Genius. Which he may be for Ricky. And I mean catalyst in every sense of the word. He changes things around him while remaining unchanged.
Karl Pilkington is the simple man's hero. This really opened my eyes.
How do you know what the documentary was going for, I'd argue that because the documentary was edited by those making it and they included the less than harmonious interactions that it isn't what they were going for.,
I enjoyed him too. Completely eccentric and clearly a genius and those two things must go hand in hand.
Not everyone has the academic intelligence yet can still be smart
intellectuals should have to spend time pandering to morons, they stuck in at school and learned the basics, when people like karl pissed about, now he decides he wan't to learn things, or not if you believe when he's talking to will self , he gets confused by concepts of evolution and intellectuals have to spend time re-teaching him what he should have learned in school, and you expect this not to annoy them? cmon.
that last guy.... if thats what one becomes when one is intelligent, i politely refuse
The last guy was an ass, who smokes a pipe? What a fucking loser, enjoy that cancer
