Bro
Try the Jerry Cantrell Wah!
I'd love to her your Custom Shop Strat through the Friedman, Ola. Thanks in anticipation.
Any dime guitar through that head would awesome cheers!
Yeah love those Friedman's my favorite one is the Bill Kelliher Butterslax signature head. And Friedman has my most favorite guitar cab which is the 412/15 Checkered cab it has two Celestion G12H30 speakers and two 15 Fullback Celestions. The 2x12 + 2x15 combination is a monster of a cab.
Black Gives Way To Blue is such an underrated AIC album. Some of the heaviest riffs are in there and one of Cantrell's best tones.
Great Dinosaur avatar ;-)
(and yes i know the picture is much older than green mind)
Acid Bubble and Last of My Kind are my favorites
Absolutely. A looking in View, Your Decision, Check My Brain, All Secrets Known, all bangers.
The intro riff of "All Secrets Known" is so powerfull!
Best album post Layne ❤
Cantrell has some of the best tones in music. Always has. We tool around with sound but Jerry had it figured out 30 years ago.
Its in the fingers. The sound is in the fingers.
@Xplora213 Agree 100%. His tone was always a little ahead of the curve from the jump. Dirt is my favorite AiC album, and those tones were sick AF! But for me personally I really loved Jerry's tone on Facelift the most, and I spent many an hour trying to replicate it back in the day with my old Dual Rec. From the opening grind on We Die Young I was absolutely hooked!
Jerry was always underrated back during their heyday - at least in my band circles - so it's been awesome to see him get his flowers later in life as Alice became so much more respected and influential thanks to UA-cam. The metal kids coming up today seem to really get just how brilliant Jerry, Layne, and AiC in general, were and it makes me so happy!
@@Barbro247
No, the playing style is in the fingers.
@@robjoyner1167 Calm down,shit.
@@Barbro247 20% is in the fingers, the rest of the tone is in your amp and guitar!
All secrets known... what a phenomenal choice to play through that gear.
The fact that Jerry still writes killer riffs like Last of My Kind long after his heyday with Layne is proof of the man's talent
Jerry‘s been writing incredible music for over 30 years. Layne’s voice was untouchable and together they had something truly special. Either of the two by themselves could easily carry a band of mediocre players into the charts.
Cantrell has the best live guitsr tone I've ever heard. Saw AIC at an outdoor amphitheater and his tone still blew my face off.
I'd love to hear you describe more about his live tone. Was it with tons of gain like metal bands? Hope I can get to see him one day.
@@thaile4417 mid-high gain, very punchy. Really relied on the bassist for low end punch. Honestly not too different from the album tone, just much, much louder. I saw him around 2011. Highly recommend.
@@thaile4417 this is basically the same exact set they played. ua-cam.com/video/1n18qaGs6Ak/v-deo.html
Definitely heavy as hell. He uses one head in BE mode thru 4x12 with Greenbacks. 2nd head in JBE mode thru 4x12 with Vintage 30s
Mine got melted... 🤘
As a musician (guitar), Alice will forever be my favorite band. I’m biased but Jerry will forever be my favorite guitarist, Layne will forever be my favorite vocalist, and so on. They made the best music I have ever listened to/felt and legitimately still continue to do so. Long live those Alice boys.
The “All Secrets Known” riff is so hauntingly awesome. Always gives me some chills.
Starting with All Secrets Known was a great choice! That’s such an eerie song. I would definitely like to hear more of that amp in the future!!
Aaannd... he nailed the tone.
Anyone else would've played a track from the Layne era, its great to see respect for the new era of AiC. Cantrell is and will ALWAYS be a riff lord. The new albums are underrated as shit.
He also played a bit of Bleed the Freak
All Secrets Known slaps so hard and is BADLY underrated around the world
Jerry’s G&L Rampage is still my favorite sounding guitar of all time
I bought G&L JC tribute rampage black after their show! The best guitar ever!
You were getting that "stringy sound" as you called it, because when you were angling the pickup that way, the low E was literally sitting on the pickup cover and touching it. That's why it sounded bad. Not because of the actual angle of the pickup. Thank for another fun video, Ola.
Not an ax I would ever imagine Cantrell using, but I dig it. I’ll always have time for his sig gear after his wah changed my life.
I just got the JC95B and it is amazing!
Yep. Was my first and only wah pedal before I sold my rig. I had no desire for any other wah, that was the one.
The all secrets known bridge riff after the eerie intro/verse gives me chills every time
No one does guitar sound production like Ola.
Fn killer sound man. 🔥🔥🔥
Jerry’s tone on the first two AIC albums are some of the best heavy guitar tones ever put on tape to this day. The Snorkler Marshall, I never considered AIC grunge maybe they’re the missing link between Skid Row and grunge, but they were always a metal band.
Them Bones crushes if you haven’t heard the Dirt Demo version of Them Bones go check it out right now. Who else sees that Them Bones riff and thinks JC might have influenced Dime a little bit maybe ?
not sure about the influence but i read somewhere that Dime praises JC guitar work on Dirt.
Jerry has been MANY times dubbed by Dimebag Darrell Abbott himself as being the “dark lord of metal riffs”
He would be more of an Iommi than Van Halen, yes!
love the mix on the intro Ola, great tone
Amazing job Ola. Soooo glad you picked songs/tones from their more recent catalog. AIC is a top 5 all-time favorite band for millions and yes Jerry is definitely is a legend!
I've had a JJ Jr for over a year now and it's all I need. Great amp👍
Saw Jerry live back in May, and he has quite the guitar arsenal
Dude has guitars coming out his ears at this point lol
Jerry Cantrell guitar with fishman pickups , that's wild
I'm not actually surprised. If Jerry got to voice them then I'm sure they sound rad. I love my Keith Merrow Fishmans I put in ltd deluxe 1000 eclipse
@@RobbieTayVaughan they're not a signature set, just the modern fluences if I remember right. It's a cool guitar, but the whole thing seems odd being a Jerry signature considering I've never seen him playing a Les Paul like this in public
That rig is sick! And your tone, playing, and production on "All Secrets Known" is killer - it sounds like the album!
Pickup just needed lowered is all. That's a bad ass guitar man. The Philips screws in the middle of the rings.
Also Ola, get some 3m pad and taken down the sticky clear coat on the back of the neck, just a little, and it'll make it feel fast. The friedman amps are amazing!. Probly the be100 deluxe with the black Marshall knobs is the best one
Hey Ola, reviews are getting better & more comfortable feeling. You Sir deserve ten million followers but let's get you to one million. Hope that everyone in the family is great & looking forward to the next video.
Great review (and playing). Thanks Ola!
A new(ish) Legend covering one of my favorite past guitar legends,
thank you so much Ola.
Much love and appreciation
Sick tone, love your playing!!
All Secrets Known is such an underrated song, nice playing as always, my dear Ola 🤘💘
it's impressive how it seems that this guitar was born for this amp! J.Cantrel nailed it! Excellent your content bro! 🤘🤘
Literally just purchased this guitar on Monday. Really hoping to sit down with it this weekend and jam. Great video Ola.
Ola proving Jim Lills theory to be spot on. Pickup placement to the strings is a huge part of a guitars tone. Far more important than other, more expensive options. Great vid as always Ola.
That intro was insanely good!
Overall one of the best Epiphones I've seen and I'm not an LP guy.
that is one of the NICEST Les Pauls I have ever seen. That amp also sounds amazing.
Friedman amps are my favorite sounding ever!
I wish they were a bit more affordable, but at least we got the BE Mini :D
I'm not a big fan of white guitars, but that Epiphone looks cool, especially with the brushed chrome. Sounds great too, thanks for sharing Ola! Rock On! 🤘🎸
The amp chugs!!! Awesome video🤘🏻
AIC and Jerry Cantrell were the masters of CHUGGING! Nicely done.
I've had the JJ Jr for about a year. I love it!
I have a JJ Jr and it's absolutely the most "fun" amp I currently own. It sounds SO damn good!
Saw AIC live in '91 twice. One with Van Halen and the other with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth.
my favourite video of yours Ola! finally someone uses the combo of the JJ head with a jerry sig guitar... dope shit
I grew up with AIC and it feels like blasphemy but All Secrets Known is actually my favorite song from them. Great job playing it too Ola.
I got to see AiC on tour this year and Jerry sounds as good as ever. Great video!
Very solid state with a tube impulse inrush curve to the sound. Best of both worlds actually
Jerry had the best guitar tone I've ever heard in a live setting.
What an absolute better of a track to open the video!
I love that song man…
Thank you, I needed this.
Absolutely one of the best sounds & most identifiable sounds in Rock! With Dime of course!🤘
Amazing tone, love this.
Finally! The Jj Jr! I saw it in the back of your room the last couple videos and was wondering if you will make a video on it.
Absolutely in love with the guitar. Love Jerry. Love AIC
Seriously nice combination. Great sounding amp for sure.
Awesome track for the intro and that tone is very convincing! I thought I was listening to the album!
sounds massive! i really like it
Thanks for the Epiphone love Ola. Cheers!!!
I recently got the Epiphone Wino and love it!
I absolutely love the JJ Jr. I thankfully got one when it was first released before the inflation, and it's been my No. 1 ever since. So unique and interesting. I've had it for over 2 and a 1/2 years now and it's still inspiring to play every time I plug in. I'd love to hear you play through it with a variety of guitars... Saying that, I'd be curious to see what you thought of Cantrell's other Epiphone, the Wino, as the pickups are wired closer to his Gibson Wino specs. AIC has been my favorite back since I heard Facelift in 1990.
Appreciate your honesty here!!
Just saw AIC on 9/23..my 13 yr Olds first concert
Those chug sections were PLEADING for the We D*e Young riff 😩 stellar review nonetheless as usual, Ola! 🤘🏻
Probably one (yes -one of) of the best albums AIC have done BGWTB. Every song is brilliant - and current even years later!
Glad your covering him man. AIC one of the best bands of all time. Criminally underrated.
Absolutely love Alice in Chains
Just saw him in Atlanta last week, definitely dope
You got some brilliant tone in this one 😎
Awesome as usual.
excellent choice of song to demo first, all secrets known is a certified banger
Just saw Alice for the first time in sac last month; jerry fucking killed it, improvs were on point and his tone was so sick 🤘🏼
That Les Paul looks sick on you Ola👍
Ooh ... close-up of the Friedman amp settings - I'm trying these out with the Friedman sim on the POD Go! Very tight tones considering you are not using a boost or overdrive. Those pickups must have a lot of drive built in.
Funny saw these guys play in the early 90s right before they hit it big miss those days . Anyways just got the Wino model and loving it well worth the money and has a great case with it as well . Now to get the G&L porno one but that going for crazy prices used oh well one can dream LOL . Great for showing this this Guitar and rocking it out . Great stuff Ola loving your channel .
That JJ amp is awesome 👌🏼
Loved the review and would really like to hear you playing the new Solar 8 string through that killer little amp!
I love that you tuned the guitar to Chains tuning.
You are the bets Ola Engloud. Greethings from México City.
Amp sounds awesome! I would love to hear some solar 6 and 7-string and trough a fat 4x12, going to be massive! Include OD? yes, of course! :D
Cheers Ola!
Please make a longer review of this amp, how it takes different pedals, will it chug etc. Would love to know your impressions after owning it for a while.
I cant believe you chose this song....best AIC produced track ever.
What an incredible album
A Cantrell guitar having Fluence pickups is a massive WTF
That was the first thing that I noticed and had me scratching my head too. I've got those on an Ibanez and wouldn't ever think AiC. I'm sure you could get a decent Cantrell sound and you can make it a single coil sound but yeah, it seems like an odd choice.
It almost seems like a marketing technique. Like hey guitar players, even if you don’t like my music, you’ll like my guitar because of the specs. But I personally wish he went with something he would’ve actually picked up and played in the 90s.
I thought the same thing. They could have at least put in a Duncan JB since he’s used those for decades.
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar the part that makes it extra weird for me is that they're Modern series and not the Open-Core Classics which would seem much more his style, considering he usually has a Seymour Duncan in the bridge, and if I'm not mistaken, one of the voicings for those is meant to resemble his old favourite, the JB
@@seanwallace7517 exactly I expected a JB in the bridge. Duncans are cheaper than Fishman and would make more sense on a "budget" model anyway, let alone his long history with them
I have his Friedman JJ Jr, and his signature G&L Rampage with a custom shop seymour duncan 78 pickup. The jj jr is my favorite amp by far.
I was done with signature gear, then this Prophecy and Wino Epiphones came out, bought the Wino the same day haha!!! Great video Ola! Looking forward to the JJ featured video as well
Just my opinion but buying signature gear is not the smartest thing to do, specially the cheaper stuff, the artists themself almost none ever use them... Page Hamilton used to play his signature red ESP but that was an ESP not a cheaper LTD. hes one of the few really that i recon.
@@M.S-Music I agree in general, but I buy signature gear mostly because of some features that are not available elsewhere. I have a Rampage G&L Cantrell sig and the Kahler bridge plus Paul Gagon Humbucker are worth it, same with the Wino Epi, electronics are really cool and the weight releif is welcome to my old back LOL but yeah most signature gear are just cash grabs, I do like for example the Mark Holcomb sig and he does plays it on stage, the SE version, but other stuff like Metallica's LTDs are meh...
That sounds mean and brutal! I LOVE IT!!
JJ Friedman has such a snarl to it. Love amps that don’t need pedals to make them sound good.
By coincidence, plugged into my JJ Jr this afternoon prior to seeing this vid. Not played thru it in quite a while - I was thinking maybe I should get rid of it?
Uhm. Nope. It’s great - as you’ve done a great job of demonstrating here Ola.
The thing about that guitar is that there is a lot of weight variance from one unit to the next. I’ve seen one that was something like 7 lb 8 oz; I’ve also seen others that are like 10 lb 2 oz. Lots of weight variance. So if you’re at the guitar shop and you’re looking at one of these, and your only objection is the weight, I would strongly recommend asking your friendly salesperson if they have any other units in the back. Heft each guitar . Maybe you’ll find something you like. Unfortunately, I only discovered this gorgeous beast, a couple months after making a guitar purchase into which I put a lot of money and work. Had I seen this first, I might have tried to save up for it, because this guitar sounds dead stellar.
Cantrell can do no wrong. Absolute genius musician 🙌
Hi Ola, nice review like as usal. I'm From France, I am a big Fan of AIC, and you have made a really good review of JC arsenal!
I could never put my finger on why I don't like Fishman pickups, you just identified what I'm hearing, that metallic high end stringy 'crispy-ness', it's in every demo video online to some degree, can't un-hear it. Amazing the difference that little tilt in the pickups angle made.
I just picked up the Epiphone Cantrell Wino it's an absolute beast.
I have one and swapped Gibby 498t/490r pups into it, and it's honestly one of the best sounding guitars I've ever owned or played for that matter. The neck carve is AWESOME and feels fantastic as it's a Jerry Cantrell custom shape. I've also upgraded the wiring, switch and bridge which wasn't much either. I do the work myself so I save quite a bit there. I'll never part with this tone monster lol. Hope you continue to enjoy yours man. Rock on 🤘
awesome, great video too!!
Amazing vid
Killer song choice!
I did really enjoyed this video, cool easy going presentation and it gives a superb impression of the gear. It's probably the first time that i could hear the sound of this little monster amp, while other guitarist just want to show how many notes per second they can play, that sucks. abo for sure.
That thing sounds incredibly good on shredding solos I must say
Guitar look killer. Amp sounds great. Cantrell is the man
Nice AIC riffs, decorated with some Dimebag solo sections 😋
Black gives way to blue (aside from being an amazing album) really started another gear in Jerry's guitar tone. The small Friedman pretty much nailed it in this video.
Jerry's main guitar i thought was a G&L strat style btw... Great demo!
Correct, he uses an old G&L strat that he bought as a teenager from a music shop he used to work at (If my memory serves me right) and he is often seen playing a Gibson Les Paul. One thing is for sure, you will never see him on stage with that Epiphone!! :D
Them bones riff sounded brutal
