    I would personally gravitate towards the JC based on the Wine Red color alone.
    The first time I saw a Wine Red Les Paul Custom when I was still a kid back in the late 90's/early 2000s, I thought that was the most beautiful color I've ever seen on a guitar.
    But the AJ deserves the win.

    Nice video. I just received my Cantrell recently. The dark wine red is beautiful in person. I had the stock bridge replaced with a Duncan distortion. Also, I removed the pick guard and toggle switch poker chip which gives it a better look in my opinion. Overall, great guitar for the price!

    Nice one mate. I have 5 les Paul’s. 3 Gibson and 2 Epiphone but love the Jerry Cantrell. Only my Gibson custom shop R8 is nicer but for the money I would hope so.
    The Cantrell pickups are also unique for Epiphone and love it but seeing you changed it I might consider it as well to lower output pickups.
    For higher gain stuff the 98t pickup is stonkin though!
    Enjoyed this episode 👍

      Thanks for the kind words, I had a Gibson up till about 10 years ago, it was an ebony custom from 2001, I bought it new at the time, it was when they were still making non custom shop customs, great guitar, wish I still had it but the two epiphones scratch that itch at least a little bit 😂.

      @@JasonWharton82 I never played with really hot pickups. I have a Fender player plus SSS Strat and I love it. But I just joined a three piece pop-punk jam band and we play mostly 90's high distortion and I've always wanted a Les Paul with humbuckers. I've only been playing for six months so I'm not sure how much those Adam Jones pickups would limit my tone... thinking of just getting the epiphone Silverburst or white custom and buy the cases and grover tuners if it's cheaper. I'll have to go to Guitar Center and play one, but that Silverburst AJ is a beautiful unique guitar. I'd be happy with just a regular custom if I got more range in my tone. Any thoughts on tone with those hot AJ pickups?

      @JasonWharton82  11 місяців тому +1

      @@greg6162 Seymour Duncan JB or Invaders are common choices for pop punk, Tom Delong used an invader in his signature strat, if you wanna go Gibson for pickups the Dirty Fingers was what Tom had in his Gibson sigs. Note that they are all pretty hot high output pickups though. The white/ebony/non AJ silverburst customs all come with grovers so one less thing to upgrade!

    I have the JC Wino Epiphone. Didn’t expect to buy one but it was at a local shop, I jammed on it, and because it felt good and stayed in tune I went for it. It is miles ahead of what Epiphone used to put out for LPs, and even the stock pickups are decent and sound much like Jerry’s real model. Overall, good bang for the buck. I’m going to try the Epiphone Adam Jones 79, and compare it to my own 1980 Silverburst. They should feel similar except weight, and I love Epiphone going with the open book headstock and LP Custom level staining all over. Pricey, but that’s today’s market.

  • @sixbladeknife44
    @sixbladeknife44 11 місяців тому +6

    I have the Adam Jones and mine doesn’t have any finish flaws at all, no sharp fret ends or anything else to speak of. As far as the tuners, it should be mentioned that the tuners it comes with are basically the same as what would come on the same 70’s era Gibson Customs…so it is accurate in that regard. I also have a regular Epi Custom and the Adam Jones stays in tune much better despite it not having the Grover’s…which I attribute to superior nutwork out of the box. The AJ is stacked with features that the Wino can’t match including a much nicer case, volute, accurate neck carve, accurate bridge pickup etc. For what you get I think the AJ is actually the better buy, not to mention the limited nature of it and artwork etc. The Cantrell is really a sig. model in name and looks only unlike the AJ which is actually more accurate than the Gibson AJ model to AJ’s actual guitar.

    I have no idea who these guys are and couldn't care less about what guitars they play. I happen to like the "Wino" because of the color and the fact that it has an ebony fingerboard. I would swap out the pickups and add a Bigsby.

    When it come’s to personal preferences, I do prefer the cantrell model. I love Jerry as an artist, I love the color on the wino, I love the build quality. And some art on the back shouldn’t be an almost $3-400 price jump.

    • @JasonWharton82
      @JasonWharton82  11 місяців тому +1

      There is a little more to it than the art work, some specific spec differences that would have required some re-tooling I imagine but still, it’s definitely a pricey guitar that’s hard to justify. I love it though 😂. Jerry is a clear winner though, really can’t say enough good things about that guitar.

    Silver burst is my least favorite finish. But I much prefer the specs of the 1979 Jones Epiphone non-art model over both of these guitars. The only thing I would change on the '79 would be installing locking tuners, preferably Schaller locking tuners or Grover locking tuners.

  • @jimcamp2423

    I think the cheaper you go with any guitar, you can always upgrade the pickups & tuners, even the electrical for the DIY Epiphone => Seymour Duncan sound & 3rd party perception of better upgrades. I think that Epiphone has sweat the details of their pickups. There is a reason SD doesn't make guitars, easier to make pickups only & be a supplier for every guitar brand. I have $ 100 guitars that to a certain volume level are every bit as good as anything else I've ever heard. I don't know which is used more in a studio recording environment, but both brand & 3rd party brand pickups seem to be able to pull that off. Set up is critical that any of them are or aren't adjusted properly to finest output signal. And all that can go out the window in the pedal board chain & even the pre-amp of the amplifier itself. No one handling of the signal path is greater or less than the other. And of course it's the musician that plays the music. Simple rule for me, if I can't make good music with a $ 100 guitar, one that cost 10-50 times is going to be the same level of awful noise I'm making with the $ 100 guitar. And unless someone is giving me the 10-50 times costlier instrument as a reward for being that entertainingly good on stage, I simply haven't earned it, regardless of what my payscale is for what I am able to earn a living at doing, that most likely is unrelated to making good music.

    I own both and the Adam Jones is far and away the one I play more (and it never goes out of tune). My Cantrell was not well made and goes out of tune constantly, even after fixing the nut, etc. I love Jerry but not a big fan of his guitar, sadly. My particular Adam Jones (Veil of Bees) is immaculately crafted. I own the Gibson version and it is damn near as nicely made. The Jones will probably appreciate much more over the years.

    Ive got both. I love both. But i truly feel the cantrell is the winner. The adam jones is a bit of a guilty pleasure in tht its an unusual piece of collectable art - i dint see myself truly unleashing on it, whereas the jerry is a sweat it out meat and potatoes workhorse that gives results that you wont be affraid to put to really good use.
    Also, i am not a snobby guitar collector, but i do feel part of why i got the adam was because of the artwork. However like my george harrison hand painted rocky fender guitar, i am too affraid to play it for fear of damaging it. They look fantastic and therefore ARE art pieces. In saying that, the adam is safer to play and easier to protect the artwork, but the harrison rocky stratocaster WILL scrape paint away if your pick hits it.
