Releasing the Sternocleidomastoid - Priya Mistry, DDS (the TMJ doc)

- Hello Friends! In this video, I review how to release the sternocleidomastoid muscle (aka the SCM). This muscle is a big and important muscle in the neck, especially when it comes to the range of motion and function of the neck. When the SCM is overused and when it becomes dysfunctional, it can lead to neck pain, jaw pain, and headaches.
If you can release the SCM successfully, you can help to release tension and fibrotic areas that have built up within this muscle which will, in turn, help to relieve symptoms of neck pan, jaw pain, and/or headaches. Please watch and enjoy! Feel free to reach out with any questions or comments.

This channel is all about TMJ disorders - what they are, how they manifest, what to do about them and how they relate to other issues that may be going unnoticed in the body such as tongue tie, sleep apnea, ADHD, and more! I will also be posting about being a dentist and a working mommy to two wonderful children. Thank you and I hope you enjoy my videos! - Наука та технологія
Thank you! This seems to be a lot of my jaw issues lately. Stretches and exercises weren’t helping I was in so much pain. Yet, the thumb down the SCM muscle is my savior! Thank you!
You’re very welcome!!
Dr Priya.
Thank you so much for such a great video .I have had this pain for weeks, and the doctors wouldn't really care. After watching your video and doing the exercises I am feeling much better ❤❤
I’m so glad you’re feeling better!
God Bless You Beautiful One ! Much needed. Thankful, finding you after much physical therapy, no one taught me this. 6 level spinal fusion, this is so comforting. My spinal fusion was a success, but need this daily.
Thank you and I’m so glad to have helped you! 🤍

This is interesting. I've suffered with TMJD for 6 years. Tried all kinds of treatment. One time I tried low level laser therapy which wasn't achieving any results until the physiotherapist placed the laser wand onto the middle part of my SCM. A few seconds later I felt a release near my jaw joint, almost like a rope knot being untied. Immediately I could open my jaw much wider. Unfortunately it seized up again within a few hours, which may have been due to muscle memory.
Sorry to hear it seized up again! Yes muscle memory can be powerful.
Train the muscle, trust me.
@@mjau1760 how to train the muscle?
This is great-especially the pinching👍🏻 I’ve been having the trifecta of muscle wonkyness-tmj pain, trapezius pain, and the SCM muscle pain. I didn’t get how they were all related but totes makes sense now. Everything feels better but the SCM is still way knotty. I’ll keep trying this, and maybe get a good massage too. Ty for great info!

This one I know I've had problems with in the past but I didn't know it can affect the TMJ. I really liked the exercise where you run your finger down and go all the way to the clavicle. Thank you so much for posting these videos and also your awesome personality that shines through it and makes it such a joy to watch Even though most of us are in pain and just praying This pain would end 😎

My scm muscles on both sides have been painful for 3 months now. My range of motion is really limited and friends have to hug me gently. I will try your techniques.
Sorry to hear that! I hope this helps
Excellent--This lady who is certified in these techniques here in Fort Worth ( NT Heath Center ) told me how to position my thumb inside my upper mouth and used my index finger to pinch the muscle but I have a hard time finding the right place to place my thump inside my mouth and pinch. Every time I swallow, I feel pain in different degrees inside my ear which makes sense in ur video. Do u think her techniques is better or yours or to do they accomplish teh same result--yours looks easier. The lady at the health center is the only person I know who does what u do. I'm very poor aka indigent and medicare (77) so I get medicare coverage from her but dentist don't cover anything. I get real upset over the pain which makes things worse. I take Meloxicam (15mg) and 1/2 of a 500 mg of Robaxin at night. Your video was insightful and informative. Thanks
I’m sorry but I have no idea if her techniques are better than mine 🤷🏻♀️

Dear Dr. Priya, I thank you for your wonderful information, but I have a question that was asked to you previously. I have a patient who underwent radiotherapy in the neck as a result of having cancer in the neck, and now he is complaining of severe spasm in the muscles of the face and neck, including SCM when examined, stiff like a rock. My question is what is the appropriate treatment in this case? That the patient is unable to open the mouth except a little and can only eat liquids. With my sincere love and appreciation to you❤
I cannot really give advice on how to treat your patient over the internet. I will have courses coming out that you can take in the next few years.

I will continue to use these techniques. I had mastoid surgery as a child. Now occasionally this muscle goes into a spasm or seizure and causes great pain that lasts a couple of minutes. They have prescribed muscle relaxers but they make me sleepy. Hope this helps me.

Can the SCM cause tinnitus as well? I feel like every time I turn my head back or lateral, one ear slightly rings.
It’s hard to say. The causes of tinnitus are multi factorial and it doesn’t respond predictably to treatment.

Can this muscle be causing my tension headaches
Hello Priya Ma'am.. Very Good & informative video.. Ma'am only my left SCM is visible & is way more prominent than the right one.. what can be the reason behind it & how it can be cured Ma'am? Thanks in advance..
I'm sorry but I don't have a solution for that.
I have a difference in size on both sides, can I communicate with you?
Same it feels like am having a tumour there bit mri showed nothing
my left sternocleidomastoid is constantly rock hard to the touch and my right is soft. why would this be?
Typically we all have a dominant side in terms of where we store tension, just like we have a dominant hand.
I have a difference in size on both sides, can I communicate with you?
Can the SCM pain trigger if the lower jaw is little far backward then the upper jaw. I mean Overbite. This overbite occurred after a session of tooth removal from my upper jaw, 2 teeth were removed from front both sides and a transparent brace was installed inside the lower jaw. I think because i kept that bracket for too long without visiting my dentist that mis alignment happened. Then i threw away that brace.
A lot of things can trigger SCM pain :) it’s hard for me to say what specifically triggered yours.
I read that this muscle can cause double & dimmer vision as well as nasal congestion on the affected side, do you know this to be true ?
I don’t know this to be true but that doesn’t mean it’s not :)
My SCM is swollen...i work out often and in great shape! I am being treated for a lip infection (never squeeze a pimple folks!) its almost resolved, but of course my anxiety has the best of me. I deadlifted and worked out HARD this week at the gym. Have neck and shoulder issues (impingement) on same side...would these also work for the inflammation? thank you!
They could! :)

I'm sorry I don't have a solution for that. I'd recommend seeing a provider who does craniosacral therapy!
Can people be dizzy if there is tightness or disfunction, and if so, would these moves help?
The dizziness can come from a few different things and this may help.

Physical therapy with a PRI (postural restoration institute) physical therapist may be a good place to start.

That can happen yes

Sorry to hear this! I tried to be as clear as possible
mam due to weakness of which muscle our shoulder becomes slopy?
Many muscles together can cause that.

Dear Dr. Priya mistry . Where you from...???
My office is in Vancouver, Washington.
hi! i was wondering if you can help me🥺 my right masseter is so tense like rock solid and my left one is really under developed, this makes my face asymmetrical (my nose and lips especially) i would really appreciate if you could give me some advice on growing my left side and relaxing my right side. also which side should i sleep on ?
I wish there was a way you could "grow" one side predictably but I don't know of one. You can shrink the muscle with a series of Botox injections, but there's no telling how much it will shrink so it may still end up uneven. As for which side to sleep on, it doesn't really matter.
@@theTMJdoc i want to get botox but im a minor :)))

Sorry to hear that!
Most of my facial pain happens about 1.5 hours after I sleep. I wake up and it is painful. Why is that?
Likely because we all tend to clench/grind our teeth with more force, more frequently and for a longer duration when we’re sleeping than when we’re awake.
Can this muscle cause sharp ear pain?
Typically that comes from the lateral pterygoid or the deep masseter being in a dysfunctional state.
I have quite a wide neck corcumference and the muscle doesnt reveal itself like on your neck. What technique do you reccommend to locate it?
there's a bony hump behind our earlobes. That's where the muscle starts. You can try to feel/grasp it from there. but be gentle! :)

Thanks for this. Really helped me a lot because I feel sore all the time around that area. I had a tmj dentist done a splint 3 years ago. Hi doc- TMJ sufferer here. About 2 years. It has been reduced a lot with night guard and I wear orthotics during the day. That brought it down 60%. Then chiropractor brought down the pain some more. I can’t seem to get over the hump though. Everyone talks about grinding and clenching especially unconsciously. I might be doing this, but don’t really catch myself doing this it all. I only have my TMJ on the right side. Do I have stress? Yeah. Can I do much about it? I think I’ve done what I can. I’m ready to accept that this will just be a part of me the rest of my life. But I’d like to make one more push somewhere to see what I can do. Live in Ohio so can’t exactly see you. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!! Can general inflammation from diet be the true culprit of TMJ? Or do you think it’s more physiology. I could go on a extremely low inflammatory diet as a last ditch effort. Also, I’ve never had lock jaw. No weakness. No clicking. That just adds more confusion probably.
What exactly are your symptoms ?
@@theTMJdoc Pain. Lots of pain after eating. Without guard I feel the need to move jaw side to side. The TMJ joint has cracked, like a knuckle. So really just pain. One of the weird symptoms is extra saliva coming from that side of the mouth. Scalloped tongue as well.
Try to limit moving your jaw side to side. This is not good for the joints.
