- What if the Fabs were actually singing the Knickerbockers' Lies?
'Lies' by The Knickerbockers, released 1965 received big compliment by John Lennon's statement "I don't remember recording that"

John Lennon heard the song and said "I don't recall recording that.". Somehow it sounds better when you see the Beatles pretending to sing it.
Danny Walchle hahaha yes indeed... the actual band did'nt match with their own tune... 😅
Where's this quote from?
@@SylentEcho there's no real existing source for that quote which makes me think it's just a rumor.
Absolutely brilliant job of edit construction. The best song the Beatles never did! The Knickerbockers were a fine group.
Postscript: I first heard this song used as music background for an old 1987 Night Flight show, imltho the best ‘after-hours’ program ever done during the early days of cable television. The “Lies” segment was used in the final Night Flight “Dynaman” episode, “The Last Adventure of Spunky, The Wonder Squid”. “Dynaman” was a riffed parody that redid the dialogue for a cheesy Japanese live-action Power Rangers-type show. But all the episodes featured some great music during the fight scenes. It took me quite awhile to figure out it was the Knickerbockers and not the Beatles doing the song. I have recordings of all the Dynaman shows, never sold commercially, but I’ve heard they’re still findable on the internet.
Elliott Swanson wow I never heard that show... thank you so much for great info and for your compliments...
This is so ridiculous and yet so completely awesome. Nice work!
James James thank you so much
well said
Wow! Just... Wow!!!
@@donletmedon It's awesome and I love this video. It's my favorite song lately.
Near the end of the song at the 2:12 mark when Paul McCartney seems to shout a high-pitched "Ooooh" and "Yeah, baby!", the video and audio sync up was dead on, and I mean DEAD ON! If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was actually a Beatles song. Excellent, excellent work!!
Thank you so much, for the compliment.
@@donletmedon You have more than earned as many compliments as exist. Remarkable!!!
@@stephengorin2685 And you have more than earned one Thank you from me... :D
You are to be commended on this superb labor of love! Amazing!
You put a lot of work into making this video; syncing the words with the Beatles singing those same words. It's your choice of editing cuts that makes this work so perfectly. I know it had to take a long time to get it just right. Great job!
PS - As you must know, John Lennon was quoted as saying: "They sound more like us than we do!" when he heard Lies by the Knickerbockers.
I read where John said "I don't remember recording this!" :)
not suprisingly that they got a lot of compliments from john lennon. they were the best beatles soundalike. thank you so much Marvin
Ken Henderson so did I 😀
Also part of the story is that Lennon heard the song being played, stopped dead, listened and then said, "I don't remember recording that"! Holy crap. Very cool for these guys.
Lennon stunned by his own soundalike
Being an amateur musician/video producer myself, I don't have to imagine how much work this took...
the man-hours alone had to be in the 20-30 range, but probably much more than that... I would guess about 70 total!
It's not absolutely perfect, but it's definitely in the 90% range! Great Job!!! Be very, very proud of this!!! :-)
thank you so much for the big compliment :)
No problem! I'm just an amateur, and I like making funny videos with original music,
and I can usually do a video in a few hours! if I were to take this on... 50-70 hours, probably!
I know how much time something like this takes! I just usually don't take this much time!
That's why I said be proud of this!... very proud! :-)
well put together. if you tube had been around in 60s everyone would have been fooled
that's a big compliment... thank you so much
If youtube was around in the 60s Walter Cronkite would have been elected President
Don,
I actually attended the concert where The Beatles sang their huge hit "Lies". Had front row seats. Got to meet them backstage after the concert where we shared a smoke and swapped some stories. John told me confidentially they nicked the song from some obscure group called The Knickerbockers. Your vintage footage brought back so many great memories! Amazing restoration job!
Yeah! That's the ticket!
Tommy Flanagan (aka The Pathological Liar)
wow! maybe you've got caught on camera somewhere in this video... :D
thank you for sharing your great experience...
*still be honest... I really wish this actually happened... :D

One day I hope to take a trip to Tommy Flanagan's brain.
LIES
In 1965 my buddy and I used to go to a bar in West Sand Lake, New York. The Knickerbockers were playing and it was hear I heard them play Lies! I was there the night the song went up the charts and hit number, everybody went crazy. Was a fun time!
I love watching this! This song is so much like a Beatles song, and the singer sounds so much like Lennon, so it's a fun fantasy to have this video!
you've got the point... so happy you enjoyed... thank you
I thought this song was by the Beatles when I heard it as a kid. I was a diehard Beatles fan, and after a while I realized they never really did a song quite like this. But it’s still a great, high-energy song. Having said that, this is just a fantastic video that makes it seem like maybe they did! This must have taken many hours to produce. Well done!
I was thought that too 😄
thank you so much!
Even the drum fills spot on! This gave me much happiness. Thank you.
you are welcome 😊... so glad knowing you are happy...🤗
What an incredible job. I had a early college rock band at Harvard the year the Beatles arrived. When I I heard "Lies" I couldn't believe it. I'd taunt friends that the Beatles started as a Jersey bar band called the Knickerbockers and play them the 45; that was an incredible job. The only funnier thing is to get an LP of Jimi Hendrix doing "Foxy Lady" and play it at 45 rpm. It sounds exactly like Wayne Newton! I wish I had your technique - but that would take forever.
Laurence McKinney haha thats really great story. hmm hendrix's foxy lady with wayne newton??? itll looks so fascinating. maybe ill try it soon. thank you
I remember when it came out people thinking it was The Beatles playing under a different name - they were always doing something new!
yes indeed 😊
Well this was before the Beatles became Serious Artistes with lofty literary pretensions, putting clues and Easter eggs in albums, etc etc
It was thought maybe they recorded and released the song under an assumed name so they could keep more of the songwriting royalties -- part of the Buddy Holly vs Crickets confusion is due to that factor
Damn this is pretty damn amazing!!! Great editing to make it look like they were singing!!! That must have taken a while to find the right spots to edit in wow! Best was when Ringo did the quick snare drum rolls, that was lined up PERFECTLY!!
KitKatCat 44 thank you very much... feel great to hear that you enjoy every frame of my editing excitement... I love this song & of course I'm beatles die hard fan that made me really enjoy many hard times on the making of this video...
donletmedon you did so good, pure magic
Excellent super - imposing of song on to images that together create an illusion of sight and sound - I actually did a gig with Buddy Randell the lead singer and saxophone player of The Knickerbockers who wrote and sang their big hit "LIES" - It was at Kelbo's Hawaiin Restaurant in the summer of 1990 - West Los Angeles, California- Jim Kelley ( a friend of Buddy's ) was also on that gig that night Rest
In Peace BUDDY RANDELL
Joe Nania wow that really great experience you had... how do you feel, being on stage with the hero? thank you very much, enjoy the fun
This tune went to number 1 in a New York Minute! People thought that it was the Beatles. Sounded just like them.
One of the best fakes I've ever seen/heard! When this song was first released, I wondered if it was the Beatles or not (always loved it). The fact that the lead vocalist for the Knickerbockers sounds "dead-on" like Lennon adds to the believability of this wonderful ruse... great work (someone was bound to do this sooner or later, so I'm glad it was you)!
Thank you so much. I'm so happy to know that we have similarity fantasies bout this Beatles' fake😄
This was so well done that I actually had to read the comments to believe it was not sung by The Beatles!
thank you for your compliment🙏🙏
I just watched a YT video of The Knickerbockers singing “Lies”. In the comments, someone provided the link to this video of The Beatles singing the same song. The whole time I thought it was the Beatles performing “Lies”, until I read the credits. OMG! I couldn’t believe that this was an edited video to give the appearance the Beatles were singing this song! This is an incredible piece of work! Love it!
thank you so much for the big compliment
Don; this is unbelievably good !!! Must have been sooo much work !!! Professional job; a million kudoes for you !!!
Amy Lovendaal thank you very much... enjoy the fun
And it just dawned on me: of course your name isn't 'Don' ....... one of the other million songs I love : 'Don't let me down' ( of course The Beatles - live rooftop version) - kinda makes me giggle too .....
my real name is Dono, but you can call me Don... but if you love the Beatles, that's alright just call me Don Letmedon :D
Brilliant , well done . A great song ...The best song The Beatles never wrote .
thank you so much
@@donletmedon You are very welcome indeed . Must have taken you hours to sync.
Always loved this song and so did John Lennon , what was his quote " I don't remember writing this one "haha.
I keep watching this...it keeps getting better...amazing!
thank you so much...
I really liked it!! True power of sound in '65.
You know, it's a shame when a video like this that took so much time and turned out so well can only get less than 1% of those viewing it to take a second to give it the thumbs up it deserves. What's more ridiculous are those who down voted it.
Tim Rose haha cool it man, that means not everyone has good taste of fun like us
What a wonderful compliment being compared to the Fab Four!! You can't beat that. Great Video !
Irisheyzgrl24 Murphy great band like knickerbockers really deserved that, thank you very much
You did an excellent job of editing. The results are nothing short of spectacular. Thanks.
Richard Ciano thank you... enjoy :)
It kills with the Beatles on vid! I listened to it 30 times. The song provided something, but I can't explain. Some energy, beauty and willpower. Thank you!
Thank you so much
“Lies” was our best moment in the studio. It’s raw, energetic & spontaneous! I still love hearing it & remembering the night we recorded it!
wow wow wow! Thank you for making this! I LOOOOOVE IT! I'm actually smiling.
you're welcome... so glad this makes you smile 😊
Hilarious! I've always regarded 'Lies' as the true birth of power pop-this song has it all.
Thankyou for your comment. We were all in when we recorded Lies & we’re truly thankful that you & others can hear that passion! Thanks again
Really good job! They really do sound like the Beatles, don't they. Amazing!
thank you so much... Knickerbockers won at the first place forever...

THIS IS JUST TOO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL THE WORK AND THOUGHT THAT WENT INTO THIS VIDEO
Tom Phillips you're very welcome, enjoy the fun
Wow! FANTASTIC job. When I first heard "Lies" I thought it sounded so much like Lennon. I was surprised when I saw The Knickerbockers. They looked nothing like the band I pictured in my mind. FINALLY, this incredible song, and the band, go together! Great job of syncing everything up.
same here... the reason why I made this video, because the appearance of this actual band were not satisfy me haha... thank you
Excellent ! well done
callywag1 thank you so much
Awesome job thanks ! Your video timing is right on cue with the music and their every moves. I always wished someone could coordinate that song with a video of them. If someone didn't know any better they would swear that it was the Beatles who performed it and lose that bet.
Thanks a lot for your compliment :) that's why I want to make this video so badly, because since the first time I heard this knickerbockers's really uncanny the fabs sounds, I always hope this song is actually belongs to the Fabs with another name. as we know 'Lies' is widely regarded as one of the most dead-on imitations of earlier Beatles material.
This was a GREAT song. Lennon vocals and Kinks guitars! The best "one-hit wonder" power pop act ever!
agreed... dont forget Harrison & McCartney on backing vocals :)
NOT a "one hit wonder". The Knickerbockers also did One Track Mind (a garage rock classic) and I Can Do It Better.
@@MikeBlitzMag “One Track Mind” charted at #46 in the US, which puts it short of being a hit song. It reached #6 on a music chart in Canada. It’s a shame that lousy record distribution that set this single back; it might have done more otherwise. “I Can Do It Better” did not chart at all, that I am aware of.
@@xtc1957 That presumes deference to a so-called national chart as some sort of authority and/or default entity in that respect. For reasons documented at great length elsewhere, it is not advantageous nor accurate to recognize them as such. To wit, the Five Satins' 1956 In The Still Of The Nite single is widely regarded as one of the vocal group genre's definitive masterpieces, and finished at either #1 or at least within the top five in numerous listener polls conducted by various radio stations over the years. Yet during its own run on those so-called "national charts", it peaked at a relatively modest #20. In turn, The Knickerbockers' LPs for Challenge and the aforementioned trio of 45s have remained in print well into the 21st century and are widely hailed as hallmarks of first generation garage rock. Any way you slice it, that is a hit.
Super Amazing Band with songs like: High on Love, Coming Generation, one track mind to name a Few. & Such a Criminally underrated talent.
DracoRepto X agreed :)
wow Draco someone who knows the other releases that never got a chance..Thank-You!..I am Beau and John's sister...Did you know them from upstate N.Y? before they went to California?...
No, Im in my early 30s but discovered them on a compilation LP when I was 15 y.o.( lies) They just Blew me away!
Wow Linda, thanks for your input. It must have been so much fun back in '65 when your brothers had national success. I was 12 years old and growing up in L.A. at the time and I really wished that their record company had been able to do a better job with their promotions. I was sorry to hear that Mr. Crandall passed away nearly 20 years ago. I hope your brothers and the rest are all doing well. So much talent came out of Bergenfield!
It was criminal the singer used a Liverpudlian accent in this song to sound like the Beatles.
Just one word...FAB!
Amethyst7 wow thats a big compliment, thank you... enjoy the fun
Amazing editing... fantastic song and performance!
Thank you.

Awesome. Beautiful. Anyone who has heard this song has got to think "what a great tribute to (ripoff of ) the Beatles. Seriously great tune. I think even John Lennon was impressed!
👍👍👍🎵
The first time I heard Lies by the Knickerbockers I was a young teenager thinking how much it sounded like a Beatles song. It quickly became one of my favorite songs so when I came across this production of "If The Beatles Were Actually Singing 'Lies' I couldn't help seeing how real it looked knowing it wasn't. What an amazing video. Thank You.
you're so much welcome... that's why this video exist, all just because I really want to feel the beatles really playing this song :D
Absolutely brilliant piece of work.
One of the interesting things about this video is it's typical of a Beatles performance to have many quick camera cuts, so blends right in with that production style.
altough in 60's, music program on television usualy had the poor editing and camera works. cutting point or shot pacing doesn't match with the music beat. so what'd you say this video has the same with 60's style that I mentioned? :D
@@donletmedon what I am saying is that style of quick cuts works to your advantage and helps hide the fact that it's not the correct song. You have done well here!
Very joyful. Nice work and you know the kickerbockers real made a gteat work and so you did. happy happy happy happy.....
👍👍👍👍🎵
I know it the knocketbockers but what a great job of putting the Beatles in there. fantastic.
Thank you sp much...
Great job editing all this ! It must have a really fun project.. You knocked it out of the park !
Yeaa it's really fun to create this... and so happy realized that many people really enjoyed the fun. Thank you so much.
First off, I grew up in 60s and remember this song, but when I heard it on radio the other day, I was sure it was the Beatles, and was flabbergasted when I found out it was the Knickerbockers, from New Jersey,, hmmmm… what the??
I grew up in 90's, when I heard it on local radio at that decade... funny... same 'what the...' happened to me when I realized that was not the Beatles... hahaha
A fine job! Great fun! Thanks! ...
thank you so much...
When I first heard "Lies" on the radio back in the day, I thought it was a new Beatles single. Quickly found out it was the American group The Knickerbockers.
The best video on UA-cam today. Excellent editing!!
Thank you so much... so glad you enjoy the fun 😊
Perfectly done....! Tell you what : When I heard "Lies" for the first time in the Sixties I was sure that must be the new Beatles Single and it's John's vocals......
Sorry - this was a 1963/early 64 Beatles style song and by 1965 the Beatles had moved on. But still a nice try.
Joachim Müller thank you so much 🙏. So do I, in mid nineties first time I heard this song... I'm sixties person but was born in early seventies 😄
philipm06 do you meant the song style doesn't match in timewise with the video? the footages that I used are the Beatles concert in 1964, so I think no problem with this kind of style song....
one track mind
donletmedon what he meant was that Lies was released in 1965, but by this time the Beatles had changed their sound from the early 60s style that Lies mimicked
Absolutely brilliant job. It sort of rings true, too. Amazing effort, thank you.
thank you so much 😊
The only time it DOESN'T sound like John singing is at the 'yeah, baby'. Other than that, without knowing, you would think it was a Beatles song. The guitar work was more like The Who in their mod stage but again, this was a brilliant'tribute'. The editing was great as well.
Thank you so much.
Agree... in musicaly this song is more close to The Who, The Creations, The Birds (UK not US Byrds), The Kinks or any bands or musicians that has kind of guitar works style. But in vocally is so beatlesque, John L on lead, Paul & George on backing, that's why in editing I put Paul shot singing 'yeah baby' not John, because the voice has Paul's vocal tone.
Nicely done. I'm glad I happened upon this, quite by accident.
Thank you so much... So it edited by accident 😅

When this song came out in 1965, we were all indignant because it sounded so much like the Beatles that we considered it sacrilege for anyone to imitate them (as we thought they were doing). The Knickerbockers were good enough to be on top, but ironically, sounding so much like the Fab Four was their downfall.
RonRay so true... that so shame coz this tune succeed to give us virtual excitement about the beatles
