Lies sounds like a Beatles song without sounding like any specific Beatles song. They didn't just make a few changes to I Want to Hold Your Hand, or I'm Down, or She Loves You or Can't Buy Me Love. Lies was a new song that just sounded as if it was written and sung by Lennon.

The Knickerbockers were a garage band out of a small town in New Jersey. " Lies " was released in Nov. of 65, a month before Rubber Soul. It's a good rocker,😊 obviously heavily influenced by the Fab Four.
Karl Buckholtz supposedly their label was inept and failed to effectively promote/distribute a few other Knickerbocker tracks that could have been hits. Stream some of their stuff - I think you’ll like it. They were a legitimate band that was formed in 1962 and made some waves in various styles of their era. Sadly they ended up on the trash heap of musical history like so many other talented musical groups that just didn’t get the breaks.

I later heard The Knickerbocker's version on one of the "Nuggets" CD's from Rhino Records, I can't remember which volume it was. ha! But yes, this really does sound a lot like The Beatles. I think The Dave Clark Five have a few Beatles sounding songs to explore.

So I immediately Google the song and found this video
Outstanding work here, TJR. I loved "Lies" then and now, but I remember being confused in 1965 as to why The Knickerbockers sounded like The Beatles, but looked like The Four Seasons onstage. It took them a year or so to figure out that The British Invasion look was not a passing fad. The Sir Douglas Quintet at this same time borrowed the instrumental groove of The Beatles "She's a Woman" for their first hit song "She's About a Mover."
For my fellow Beatle-freaks: "Listen Listen" by The Merry-Go-Round. Emmitt Rhoads from The Merry-Go-Round went on to do several solo albums on which he played all the instruments. His "The Mirror" album, in particular, is very Beatlesque and well worth checking out. Very catchy.
A very curious one is Jellyfish's She Still Loves Him from 1991 . The band got a lot of industry buzz for their melodic sensibilities and the songwriters ended up writing material for Ringo's Time take Time a year later, so the connection is there. When the remake of Free as a Bird was done in 1993 the production and the arrangement, tempo, and harmonies sounds like it was hugely influenced by the aforementioned Jellyfish song, almost as if they used that as a template to 'update the beatles sound for the times'. A Beatles influenced group influencing the Beatles as it were, worth a listen.
I saw them ‘perform’ Lies on the old Lloyd Thaxton syndicated dance party show in the 60s. Their 2nd single “ One Track Mind” didn’t chart well (#45) due to their label’s inability to distribute it. The only other memory I had of the band is I recognized the drummer, who later replaced Bill Medley in the Righteous Brothers.
I am offended that The Rutles were derided here. The Beatles started out as a Rutles copy band. Just ask Paul McCartney or Pete Best- they will fess up. That's like saying Star Wars wasn't influenced by Spaceballs.

Do you know It's gonna be alright by Smyle from the Netherlands, 1973-era? The song is composed by George Kooymans from the Golden Earring and it's sung by a very Lennon-esk Bas Muijs who later became the main voice in the Stars on 45 Beatles medley.
I just did. A lot of interesting similarities. It would appear that "Too Much Talk" was released in late 1967 and the Beatles released Paperback Writer in 1966. I wonder if the Beatles ever heard it? Maybe they did and just didn't care. I personally don't think it's close enough to cry copyright though. Thanks for pointing this out.

Even more obvious, "Lies" sounds like the song they used as the template for the title song to the movie "That Thing You Do."
