Wiping on polyurethane- 50/50 diluted

- Finishing a mahogany table top with wipe-on poly. I make my own using Varathane polyurethane and cut it 50/50 with mineral spirits. This is an open air building so I deal with dust but it flashes really quick and is a great finish for when you don’t have a spray room.
All the other polyurethane application videos make it look like some kind of advanced science to do properly, but this video makes it look so simple!
Yea thinning it with mineral spirits makes it easier application. Slowing the drying time helps avoid issues. But thinner coats need more applications for same level of protection
@@MultiKumar321 turpentine from what I understand is a bit different than mineral spirits. I would check with others to see if it can be used in replace of mineral spirits
An artisan with skills. Nice work. Thanks for sharing the 50/50 tip.
Incredable beautiful finish. Incredible grain. Thanks for your video.
BTW... the cloth face mask provides no protection from solvent fumes. Looks like there is plenty of fresh air though.
Its a cheap dust mask and only USED in MEDICAL facilities to keep your germs in your mouth,😂😂😂😂😂😂
There’s always one
Is the cloth mask to avoid spitting on the finish? Surgeons wear it to avoid spitting into their patients open wounds. Yes it does almost nothing to filter the air of particles (including viruses!!).
Yes, it does😊
Just pointing out a tip, that mask protects against fumes as well as masks protect against covid.@@BockenauerBuilder
fantastic piece of wood
Ive been putting diluted polyurethane on woodwork for years! Seals it really well, protects from knocks and you can either leave the slightly textured finish of the swolen woodgrain or sand and wax!
Why is anybody surprised that wet poly is reflective?
Thank you! Question: for stair runners after the step you show in video. After 1st coat, sand again with 400 grit, clean and reapply additional coat? About 4 coats in all? Thanks again, my steps are looking great because of this video!
I know this is solid mahogany, but did you apply any stain at all?
I realize this is an old video. Just curious what grit sanding you ended on. I assume no staining, but natural wood.
Could you please talk about where in the finishing process this was? How many coats were on before this? What do you do between each coat? Thanks!
Looks like it was finish sand and no coats of any poly or anything but who knows
We sand 320 grit between coats and this is 8 to 10 coats.
We used this technique on piano restoration in the past.
Beautiful & Great Tips but I have Question (?). What to do with wood that has cut designs in my wood (???). Thanks John in the Philippines Retired.
.
That looks great initially , I never seen that method of realy flooding the top, but the question is - there are wiping streaks what do you do with those? are there next steps on this finishing method? do you have a video of the final resault after curing?
I think they settle out as the polly levels out while still wet.
Sorry, I do not have a video, but I just buff it with a car buffer (electric random orbit buffer) with a McGuiars (spelling???) buffing compounds in three phases.
that looks like glass nice work .....i put 3 coats of water base poly on my project is the enough to sand and polish ..?..
hi. is it water base polyurethane to dilute 50/50 with mineral spirit?
I said torch the bubbles- that’s for epoxy! Use a heat gun for flammables. It was a joke with the guys because we do a lot of epoxy- guy filming is a boatbuilder. This wasn’t originally going to get posted. It was for my brother, but was easier to share this way.
Beatiful job but I hope you know a that mask doesn't protect you from the volatile organics in the poly.
Suggestion, unless you are attempting a one coat system - buff on till dry to the touch 1-3 coats ( green/white kitchen pad ) 2 hours betweet coats and final with this technique next day.
Why? Im a curious noob, sounds like you have a tecnique
@@snowboarder50000 buff on till dry to the touch 1-3 coats ( green/white kitchen pad ) 2 hours betweet coats
Depends on the polyurethane I let it dry about 12 hrs wet sand with 1200 paper another coat when finished it takes about 3 weeks to complete cure I use oil base poly thin 15% I do guitars and some furniture
@@snowboarder50000 It's a floor finishers trick I use this technique as a seal coat. Very easy on small projects and can be tinted once you get the hang of it. The thinning is the trick to get the time frames and sandability so if you try it start with 50/50. You are shooting for quickly sandable without gumming up and film thinkness. 2 hours in a non humid 70 + degree day work when I do it with a parks floor finish. I use parks floor finish as my sealers . I''m also using a buffer with 180 screen discs.
@@JohnAdams-xc5yk Yeah your doing much higher quality finishes and much harder I'd imagine also. I'm a hardwood floor guy. My trick is fine for projects and furniture if you don't spray lac.
Nice soaker coat. The cat seen it....I bet he leaves a few foot prints.
Once the poly dried, how did you get all the tiny bubbles out with losing the gloss?
You sand it with a high grit sandpaper, like 600
A heat gun or torch lightly over the bubbles will pop them when wet. Search for the technique.
That is some of the best grain I have ever seen! What kind of wood is this?
Can i use lacquer thinner on polyurethane?
Is it oil based poly? Does it matter what direction you apply it?
It’s oil based poly. I don’t think it matters what direction
@@mick2spic thanks for the response.
How do you keep the poly from running onto the bottom of the table? I'm struggling with keeping the underside of my piece clean and not having blotch spots.
The problem (just like painting cars) is keeping dust, debris, and dudes OFF of it while it dries.
I finish guitars with polyurethane but not 50/50 I only thin about 15% I get a nice hard finish
Mine starts to dry immediately?! So I go back and then it looks not so good
do you ever get black cat hairs in the wet poly?
Wow looks great!
at what sanding grit did you varnish it?
It didn’t work for me. Ended up doing 3 coats and the wood just still looked dry and had to use straight polyurethane.
I just stained a woodtable with 3 layers and its dry now. I want to varnish it, but should I sand the wood table very lightly (320 grit) before varnishing?
dont have to, but you can for a smoother finish
Before applying any top coat, run your hands over the surface to see if it feels smooth or if has any "raised grain". Any sanding you do should be done by hand, with the absolute minimal downward pressure to avoid creating uneven color spots in your stain work. Just lightly glide it over the surface. I find the 360 Grit Mirka Mirlon Pads much easier to control. They can also be used between coats of your finish to get the smoothest finish possible.
If you do this you should go and buy polyurethane reducer not the same thing as mineral spirits.
You look like me .Good video
Yep for sure!!!!,
And after it dries you'll see the tons of dirt in the finish.
If you do it in a dusty area
FOOKING THANK YOU, you answered 2 of my main questions. Next about the torch? It kills the bubbles 😂🕳️💩🤯
Also, what brand polyurethane? Please
Hi Malcolm!
Can you do this over chalk paint too?
WHAT COLOR DID U USE ?
Was this the final coat? What are your final activities before being finished? There has to be dust in the shop and all the resizing create questions fir me. I am trying to learn how to do this and feel it is more complicated than this.
Just spray it. This is just dumb unless you don't have a sprayer
Operative words, " Don't have a sprayer"!!!!!@@cheekymonkey8818
Such a shiny finish... of course it is shiny, it's wet. lmao
What type of rag?
I have done the rub on poly with 50/50 mix satin, it looks like glass when freshly applied but when it dries, I have marks where streaks actually look shiny, any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thank you/1
50/50 poly satin to thinner?
Make sure you’ve mixed it really well and also make sure you’re overlapping your passes. 50/50 wipe on is a very simple process, almost foolproof if done correctly.
It will peal of the wood in a few years or shatter Also dont wver use a torch. A heat gun. No open flame.
Look at it in four hours. Won’t look nothing like that. It’s a building process
Hmmmm.... a shedding cat next to a freshly flooded polyurethane table....what could go wrong?
can you do this with water based poly?
Apparently, although I have not tried yet, 10% diluted with water.
Can I use turpentine to dilute poly instead of mineral spirits?
Yes... But spirits will help in fast drying and less odor
Can I use this on my cars carbon fiber hood as clear coat?
Noooooooooooooo, Go to a paint place and tell them you need some clear coat......
Dafug that blue surgical mask going to do for you a shop?
😂 hahaha
Man that was the first thing I noticed. Couldn't even finish this video based on how dumb that is.
You notice this video was made durring covid. Remember covid right? most businesses had a legal obligation to enforce mask requirements. In some areas its still a legal requirement.
@@Wolfstanus Dafug that blue surgical mask going to do for you against covid?
@@scottfreedoms9584 Liability and legal action from the state are just two things that it would help against
What about vertical surfaces will it run or do I just barely apply it? Then do alot of coats.
Wipe it thin and then come back to double check it. With oil based you can wipe away sags shortly after it's applied without danger of leaving streaks. Water based is a different story. It likes to be wiped or brushed on and then left alone, as it sets up and gets tacky so fast.
What kind of ragg do you use??
Polyurethane is not a tuff surface though does not hold up good, finish looks great but sin and weather will kill it and don't use it on a shuffleboard DINISH,lol😂😂😂
🥱
i see bubbles
Tiny bubbles
In the sun
Makes me feel warm all over,,,,,,
and dead people
What's the mask for dude? Covid?
Bro's mask is covering his eyes basically
INFORMATION!!!??? 🙄 Damn Fellas.
