    I’ve never targeted mackerel from the beach before, spotted a guy last year using pop ups catching mackerel, and this video inspired me. Off to your shop, grabbed pop up rig ingredients and made at home. Southbourne beach, caught first cast and even had enough for supper. Cheers Tom

    Hi Tom, very informative video and a method I had never really paid any attention to. Anyway I decided to take the plunge and tied a couple of pop-up rigs as per your video and headed out to a local beach.
    It still seemed bizarre to be fishing with the smallest hooks I had ever used for sea fishing and the tiny strips of mackerel. Cast out the first rod and while I was tackling up the second it started bouncing around crazily so assuming it was a mackerel I started reeling in but it quickly became obvious that this was no mackerel. Second assumption was big black bream and then when a bar of silver surfaced I thought bass. It turned out to be a sea trout of just under 3lbs so to say that I am a convert to the method would be an understatement. I fished on for another 2 hours without the semblance of a bite but left for home a very happy angler!

    🤣🤣 thanks mate, I really appreciate you standing up and being honest about your embarrassment, I think it's good to acknowledge these things. Great upload, if a bit frustrating watching you catch loads of mackerel, when I think I onl managed two last year. It looks like a really fun way to catch them though, and dare I say more productive. Impressed by the way you catch mackerel. I've caught mackerel bottom fishing but it's always been unintended. Must take note of how you're making your mackerel rigs it might be easier using them rather than feathering for them

    Hi Tom. Cracking vid. As always. Makes such a more enjoyable alternative to the usual whacking out a string of feathers and just “catching” 👍
    Do you think there is any particular state of tide more suited to this style of fishing? I only really ask as fish the Solent and wondered if the strong tide pull here would cause hassle with the longer style snoods?
    Also could you provide a link for your upcoming sponsored run. Having lost my mum 💔 quite recently in a horrible way (is there in fact a nice way?) to the dreaded big ‘C’ I’d be keen to see what support I can give you in getting to your target.
    Keep up the great work 👍

    • @FishyTom
      @FishyTom  8 місяців тому +1

      Firstly, I'm very sorry to hear about your mum. My thoughts and condolences to you. I hope some time fishing on the beach brings a little bit of respite from the loss you must be feeling. The link for the fundraising page is here should you wish to donate:
      fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/toms-race-for-life-37894861
      I find time of day more important than tide (the usual first light/last light situation), however, you are absolutely correct in what you say. Strong tidal pull will flatten off the snoods and reduce the effectiveness of pop ups. So for the Solent a slack high around 8ish (this time of year) should in theory give you a couple of hours of fishing for them. The other killer of pop ups is weed. Bits of weed on you snood/hook/pop ups etc will again reduce the effectiveness.

      Thanks mate. The long one on the left is a 5m (16.5ft) quiver tip rod. Amazing fun for this style of fishing, but a little bit specialised and a "luxury" item considering how often I get to use them.
      The other rod is just my normal 14ft hybrid tip "conti". A little heavy for this, but I intended to chuck the mackerel head out for a bass, so it worked for both jobs.

    A good alternative to lure or feather just one question Tom. Do you ever have problems with the fish taking the pop-ups. Only reason I ask is because when hemp fishing I've watched roach take the split shot

    • @FishyTom

      I guess I can't answer that honestly, because I can't see what's happening. The occasional missed bite could well be a fish nibbling the pop-up.

      @FishyTom  8 місяців тому +1

      You certainly can fish with a float. That's another good, fun way of fishing. Most of these fish were around 60/70yds, so possibly out of range of a float. Having said that, as I was packing up, fish (mostly small bass) were smashing the sandeels right in the edge. That would have been fun on a light float (or lure) setup.
