    Douglas, I don’t think I have ever watched a 1 fish video without being disappointed. This was brilliant!! straight to the point and packed with useful information, no fancy music, and no pointless footage. I must be honest, I only subscribed to you because I am interested in the sea trout. You’re just a joy to watch on everything you do and your channel is not all about you. Your passion for fishing shines through in spades and I wish you all the success mate👏

    I have memories of fishing with my late father just along the road from where you are, we parked at the wall, we called it the “wall to wall” across from the base.

    Great video, thanks for posting it! It's good to have someone explain exactly what tackle they use and more importantly how to set it up, and then show how to fillet and smoke your mackerel, and you can't get them any fresher than the one you just caught, smoked and ate! I have a heavy feathering set up but like you I prefer to fish with a lighter spinning outfit, it feels much more sporting! I'm just waiting for reports of the mackerel starting to show where I fish (Which should be quite soon) so I can get out for a few - I don't want to go too early as it's a 200 mile round trip for me. @@PiscatorUK-Fishing Cheers for the comment. You smoking looks so simple. I've got loads of beech chippings. Never ever considered it? But I am now and will try it on our annual trip to the West Highlands. Do you remember cod in parsley sauce? It's so easy to make even I can do it, and some of the "lesser" fish poach really well, like Hake and mackerel for example, especially if you add a squeezed lemon. Mackerel poached in cider leaves all the goodness in the fish and it's very simple. As an island, we should be eating more fish. Going to try smoking, going to make a tray for my mess tins cuz you can use the other one as a lid.

      So update. I caught a just shy of 2lb sea trout on loch Eil today. Filleted. And tried this with two mess tins, one as a lid on my old 533 coleman. I did marinate for an hour with some vege oil and tarragon. It fed four, all asking me if I was a chef and I am the opposite. What a way to cook? Gorgeous. I packed a bunch of beech shavings. Aye, I've had mackerel break the surface hanging on to my casting weight for dear life on more than one occasion.

      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  5 місяців тому

      Hello mate, many thanks for commenting, your right not many 11 ft spinning rods about. 10ft will do the job though as long as the weight rating is high enough for the lures or weights. I’ve had this rod for years, it’s a rovex captive and I’ve used it in a few of my videos including the sea trout fishing. It’s not the lightest of rods and I wouldn’t want to be casting it all day but it’s also a good all rounder for light beach fishing.

    Learnt a lot from your vids. Never fished before. One thing I wanted to know was how you take your catch home? Do you keep them in a bucket of water or just put them in a bag? Thanks

    • @PiscatorUK-Fishing
      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Keeping your catch fresh is something I’ll definitely mention in my next video. If I’m fishing for a short time 1-2 hrs I would keep them in a bucket of sea water. If I’m away all day I would take a cool box with some ice or ice blocks. Because mackerel are an oily fish they can turn very quickly if not kept cool or cold.

    Hi I guess you used 40 lb braid because of 60g jig. How is knot going with shock leader and braid via the rings.? I have experienced some snaps with shock leader (3 ft flurocarbon 0.26) on the knot with braid with no reason. I used 20lb braid, 2.74 rod length, casting action 7-23, 3 feathers for mackerel attached to the flurocarbon and 20g jig on the end attached with feathers line like you. Any advice how can resolve that problem?

    • @PiscatorUK-Fishing
      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  4 місяці тому +1

      Hello mate, 40lb braid is my go to strength braid for most of my light-medium shore fishing. One of the main reasons for getting crack offs or the line snapping during the cast is due to the joining braid to leader knot. I only ever use the FG knot for all my braid to shock leader knots. It’s one of the strongest knots and has a very slim profile that goes through the rod guides like butter, you hardly hear the knot going through the rod guides during the cast. I hardly get any issues of the line breaking during the cast unless it has been my fault, like forgetting to put the bail arm over or I didn’t notice the line had twisted around the top eye of the rod before casting.

    • @PiscatorUK-Fishing
      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  4 місяці тому

      Thanks for the questions buddy. I take it you mean 15lb mono? If so you should be ok. If you fish in an area that’s got no possibility of getting snagged up, then fishing light line is ok. The best braid to leader knot to use is the FG knot. Tight lines🎣

    Hi Douglas great video again i have not long came across ur channel are you fishing at clynder area all the time and if so how deep is it there. • @PiscatorUK-Fishing
      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  5 місяців тому +1

      Hello buddy thanks for watching and commenting. I totally get fishing away from the busy areas which I try to avoid. I am just before Clynder in the last few mackerel videos but do like to try other areas. It’s relatively shallow close in with deeper water further out with a good cast. A bit of advice if you do plan to go there, is to go about 3hrs of the ebb tide down to low water and fish the first 3hrs of the flood tide, that way you don’t need to cast as far to reach deeper water. Rosneath the opposite side of Rhu narrows is also quite good but again can get busy in summer and parking close to the water is very limited. Hope this helps mate, tight lines to you both👍

      Thank you so much for the advice Douglas it's very greatfully received I haven't been able to get out this summer as yet obviously due to weather conditions not been great here in the west of Scotland as u will be well aware. Was hoping to try a trip up early morning this week to see how things were and when he stops school for summer take him to a mark which isn't too busy. I used loch long many times and last year around this time it was producing big hoards of macks but weather was completely different very warm. I drove down towards clynder last year but just wasn't sure if it was deep enough for macks tbh but having watched you and seeing what can be done I shall try and see this season at some point. Again many thanks and tight lines to you and look forward to seeing more videos from yourself oh and the smoked mack looks amazing 👏

    • @PiscatorUK-Fishing
      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  4 місяці тому

      Hi Stephen, thanks for commenting. To be honest I’m not sure, I’ve not heard or seen others mention it. I would imagine that the water is more brackish the further you go up the estuary and unsure if this will effect how far the mackerel will venture up. Knowing that mackerel chases the food source of baitfish like sand eels and sprats if they are there there’s a good chance the mackerel won’t be far behind them.

    For me, this is just overkill on the equipment.
    I like to fish as light as possible for mackeral, 9 foot rod, 14g rated, 1000 size reel, 10lb braid, casting a 16g spinner.
    My personal view is that heavy tackle provides less enjoyment for fishing.
    Mackeral are one of the best fighting fish, but I feel you lose that connection if you fish with such heavy gear.

      @PiscatorUK-Fishing  3 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely agree with you, there’s no better way to catch mackerel than on light gear, even better on th fly rod. This method is my go to when I want to catch mackerel quickly and I’ve not got the time to fish. 2-3 casts enough fish for dinner or bait, job done.
