@Grav I do the same, but if you wear a wristband and don't use it correctly, you just look like a fucking dumbass in a PC building instructional video, all credibility is lost.
@Dex4Sure That's no excuse. You can spend a week of intensive research to know pretty much everything about pc and building one. Literally just 1 or 2 build videos is enough to not make these kinds of mistakes.
Poor guy. Sounds like he was thown into a project way over his head. Still, a majority of his mistakes could have been easily corrected with a day or two of research which it looks like he either didn't do or he chose to ignore.
The vast majority of his mistakes could have been corrected by READING the MANUAL that came with the motherboard... it directly tells you where to put things like ram and cables.... Not only does the power supply already touch the side of the case, it is also mounted onto the case with METAL SCREWS. I think my computer is gonna blow up any second now.
Actually Jack it is SUPPOSED to touch the case. If anyone has taken the A+ computer repair exam you know that the case is essentially a grounding unit. It touches the outside of the powersupply which uses the third electrical pin to ground. What he did was increase the change of system being fried in a short LOL. Yes an idiot he was
Not to mention the motherboard screws are connected to the power supply's ground rail. And that they're mounted on metal standoffs. Oh I can just see the sparks.
Jack Le shiieeett!! thanks for telling me bruh! i just put some super glue on that bad boi and it all good now! now i dont have to worry about computer blowing up and shit. whew!! thumbs up for you mate
Don't worry. Just get a tazer, attach it to the side of your case and hold the trigger down. It should cancel out the electricity shorting from your PSU.
It can play all of the newest titles. It can run old games at 100s of frames per second. It can explode in a fireball because the power supply will overheat due to the fan being the wrong direction.
That happens when case manufacterers take the ATX concept a bit too free. The PSU should be able to breathe at all 4 sides, thus it can be installed either way.
@@Synthematix Don't they only spin when the PSU goes beyond the whatever threshold they have set? Or are you saying the fan doesn't spin fast enough? Graphics cards for example tend to only start the fan once they go beyond 50 C, so it will always be at 50 C when in idle
I think the metaphor you're looking for is snakes nest. The metaphor crows nest is used to describe a point so high it is a vantage point to see far. I know this because I live in Crows Nest, Sydney NSW - that's a suburb higher than the surrounding areas of North Sydney. Sailors called the cage atop the masts of their ships crows nests, they would climb to the crows nest to survey the area because it was the highest vantage point. Etymology FTW.
I've seen Linus provide more than a bit of misinformation, especially as he strayed from consumer PCs and was building servers. Besides being a lot of clickbait and sale's pitching, I generally don't watch any of his videos now. So I dunno, he might have improved, but last I checked he was not a credible source.
Linus, JayzFalseCents and Hardware Cannacks are the sht bricks in the cesspool. They cannot be trusted! In Gamers Nexus, you can trust! While every sod outthere made pathetic RTX unboxing videos. GN made a high quality video about specs and stuff. Their content is unbiased, legit and grounded by logic.

Sometimes it makes you wonder how some people get paid to do what they do and there are tons of people who have actual knowledge don't even get a shot.

I agree neoasura, I know people like that who don't know jack about building pc's but I'm over here and I can basically build a pc with my eyes closed and make it look good but because I don't know the right people, I didn't Have my shot..
When I had issues with my PC shutting down, the guy in a computer repair shop said my PC was overheating, because I have removed the side panels on my case. He then claimed fans work like air conditioners and that by removing the panels the "cold" air leaves the case and that the "hot" air from my room was entering the case and didn't allow the fans to cool my CPU properly. His college was listening to all this and confirmed it. I just left. I know for a fact these guys were working there for at least 15 years. Imagine how much BS they sold to people who don't know anything about computers. The problem was with the power supply. I built that PC myself and I could have diagnosed the problem, but I simply don't have spare parts lying around to test stuff.
Blame "toxicity" and "harassment" all they want - some of the advice is amusingly bad sure, but a lot of it is outright dangerous. If they want to fix this, an update video with someone who knows what they're doing would be appropriate

"So basically, to get more FPS in LoL, I change my ratio to 5.0 I think is the max. Then, it needs more power to run like the cpu, so we give it 3 rather than 1.5v...."
@Mi Ke "normal specs" is the cookie cutter approach. every processor is different, but they have no incentive to really sit down and pick a best frequency and voltage for everyone single one, they don't even know what the consumer wants or will use, you can make a cpu faster or more efficient, it is a trade off. some people over clock, some under volt. it is almost a guarantee to improve on factory settings, even slightly
Yea, the thing about those short circuit electrical fires is that the flames are invisible. Your house is already on fire and burning to the ground. You're gonna want to just buy a new home.
The short circuit has already entered your pc components and getting a new case won’t fix it. It will just short circuit the new case as well. Best to just throw it all away and start from scratch. Bad luck rip your computer. Also don’t forget to buy a livestrong bracelet when you build the new one.
Power supplies also give off a small amount of electromagnetic radiation. Without those pads, your case is amplifying that radiation to dangerous levels. You should go to a hospital and have a full body scan done.
Darcy Cardinal lol it doesn't bother me that he's using too much but mixing two pastes is just not a safe bet. Then the guy doesn't install fans on the radiators. Hopefully vox doesn't ask him to do any heavy lifting with that thing
Desktop processors aren’t even that crazy. They’re amazing and do a great job, but you’d need a thread ripper 2990X or an i9 7980X to have any kind of bragging rights.

That PSU part: he talks about having those cushion on the bottom, then he not only misses the part Greg mentioned, but also how big of a static electricity prob it would be to put a CPU AFTER putting in the motherboard. If ur that careful of a mere PSU, why not be careful of something much expensive like CPU?
You shouldn't just stick the RAM where the board manufacturer recommends. They do not know your particular RAM's needs and feelings. Your super-fast RAM will let you know how it chooses to identify itself, in this case the RAM obviously self-identifies as single channel, and feels threatened if inserted too close to the CPU as CPUs have been known to gang-stalk RAM sticks in the past. To insert it any other way would be disrespectful to the RAM, and by all means a microaggression which further perpetuates the RAM patriarchy and the associated oppression that it brings.
puts thermal paste on the ram and graphics card and obviously the ssd/hard drive. would be funny to see someone put thermal paste on the fans and turn them on

Now take the same components and make the same build commenting side by side with the Verges video what was done wrong and the flashing back to showing what should’ve been done!
Based on how he built that computer he was probably having heat issues while playing any modern video game. And just to show his pc works he chose a lesser game. His power supply is choked, his cpu cooler is missing fans, his ram probably didn’t work. His NVMe SSD was probably having issues. It’s mindboggling that with all of the employees who seen or edited this video prior to release, not one person said that we shouldn’t post it.

5:00 of course you need to insulate the bottom, Greg. We all know that electricity follows gravity like water. Hence why you don't need to insulate the back. /s
Jeeeez, You can only GROUND the electricity idiot. Is the back of the computer touching the ground? No. So why would you have to worry about grounding the brick on anything asides from the bottom brace?
But only from the right side of the BRICK, THats why the fan appeared to have been blocked but its ok because it pulls air through the bottom of hte brick
It was such an embarrassment that they took it down. Did no one from IT ever see this before it went live? Did no one stop him? Maybe IT saw this and was like "Yeah, let's not say anything and watch it crash and burn." I like that idea and I'm sticking with it.

Yeah he seems like he is a little timid, which is fine, but clearly didn't know what he was doing and was just following a script or maybe a dart board with words.
Seeing as how he took to Twitter and stated that he’s built computers before and flat out refuses to address his mistakes...nope, I don’t feel bad for him all. Dude is clueless.
You do not have to "hammer in" anything, whatsoever. When building a computer, and trying to look confident about it, there shouldn't be an "I believe" when it comes to the speed of your RAM. You should know for sure what you're putting into the computer. I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as, um, insulating pads. Comments are disabled. Absolutely hilarious.
They had 12 producers approve the video before releasing it. He also fixed most of the errors before testing it. Could have done a better video showing the fixes.
I don’t think he fixed anything, at the end of the video it still shows the ram in the wrong slots, the fans missing from the radiator and the I believe the PSU was still facing the wrong way.
Well, I thought I had seen it all... First the dual channel RAM, then the CPU installation tool, and finally the PSU "SHORTAGE". To top it off we also got a double stacked thermal paste sandwich and then just destroyed the whole system cause of the cable management. Thankfully there's still people like Greg that can actually show people how to build a PC. Edit: By destroying the whole system cause of the cable management I meant that the PC looked awful. It probably won't affect airflow or performance, but I think the fact that they used a windowed case, and then left that mess, isn't what you would expect from a UA-cam channel like The Verge.
Well to be clear u won't destroy pc if u don't do cable management unless wire is blocking a fan .... Although I agree cable management makes things easy for upgrade , cleaning , repairing and other stuff
While cable management is more of a cosmetic thing, it still takes no time between a mess and some decent organization. But missing screws for the cooler, "short circuiting" the PSU, poor memry placement. It looks like he never built a PC before and only had a 5 mins bootcamp and a short script. That is stuff that is in the actual manual. Actually, **reading the short manuals that come with the parts is helping more than watching the video.* It even takes less time.
yeah, but you shouln't already have paste on the cooler prior to putting another layer of paste on the cpu. its overkill, and there's also technically more risk of inconsistency in relieving heat because you are working with two mediums instead of one. or you have more paste than necessary which can spill over. ive never actually had anything negative happen from spilling over, but im paranoid about metals getting near a socket that shouldn't be there. it just sounds like an unnecessary risk, and if some new guy builds a computer this way he could go over the top.
@@TheRealFobican Honestly its not really relevant how you apply paste, only that you use a reasonable amount of it and that it ends up covering everything and not spilling over, a peasize in the centre, an x shape... some even end up spreading it with a plasting bag or god forbid even your finger but the pressure from the heatsink spreads it out anyways... guess it makes more sense to manually spread it for watercooled systems since they have slightly less gravity?.... I mean.... Who cares tho, just apply paste whatever way makes you comfortable... its all the same, It really doesn't matter.
I didn't watch the whole video, but I was split on downvoting the video based on that alone, or upvoting it because of the motion graphics at the start.
Ah good old Gunnar Optics, without the affectation power they provide he'd come across as a complete blithering imbecile. I actually own a pair and the only time I wear them is when I'm driving at night. They're so good I'd actually recommend buying a pair, not for gaming, (ironically they hurt after about ten minutes when using them with a headset - which at a rough guess 100% of people would be doing with 'gaming' glasses) just use them for driving at night.
May have eye problems so I'll excuse the glasses ,the rest though from a site with 2.1 million subs is unforgivable , imagine if someone followed his advice .iv built a PC at 3 in morning after a night out and done a better job..
Thermal paste is supposed to be as thin as absolutely possible. It's there because coolers and CPU lids are not manufactured to high enough spec to ensure that they are absolutely flat and parallel. This is why CPU lapping and deluding is a thing.
+lowell houser as long it cover the die & fillin the gabs it doesn't matter if you had extra, the only reason the ppl suggest otherwise is the risk of shorting your components in case of a leakage, but that will take a ridiculous amount of paste anyways
@@evanmedi6144 plus, only really a risk if you're using the exotic conductive stuff like liquid metal. As long as it doesn't get into the socket and block the pins, it doesn't really matter if it's covering the MB.

Can we all appreciate that anti static wristband that isn't grounded anywhere, so it's essentially a PC builders fashion statement.
it's not even an anti-static wristband. it's just a support bracelet. someone must have clued him in that he should be using an anti-static bracelet for the video (not because it's necessary, but because this is supposed to be "serious") and just gave him any bracelet they could have found within the timeframe they needed it.
I just grip the side of the case every so often.

Careful, they might think your sending them a D E A T H T H R E A T

The verge: how not to build

Vergegate has started. War on fair use.
let the games begin
5:00 of course you need to insulate the bottom, Greg. We all know that electricity follows gravity like water. Hence why you don't need to insulate the back. /s
Thanks for that. The concept of a current sink makes much more sense to me now.
@TheDogWithGoggles pretty sure he was continuing the joke lmao

TheDogWithGoggles It's a superfluous punctuation mark for dense people who don't get jokes, such as yourself.
I think they where like let’s build a PC
The Verge: HEY YOU THERE build a PC for us

It was such an embarrassment that they took it down. Did no one from IT ever see this before it went live? Did no one stop him? Maybe IT saw this and was like "Yeah, let's not say anything and watch it crash and burn." I like that idea and I'm sticking with it.
Well he has is a computer science major which I kinda wonder how he go his diploma since most computer science graduates know how to assemble and troubleshoot their pc because its thought almost throughout the year....
I didn't know they taught much about hardware is computer science classes.

It's one of those things where every time you look at/watch it, you see something new and so wrong.
Yeh cause who needs screws right
lol, also look at the zip ties that are loose xD
Such a noob with that paste. Everyone knows you put the after market thermal paste on the IHS first, then cover that with liquid metal, and THEN sandwich it together with the pre-applied paste.
Nah best to use liquid metal on an aluminum heatsink
Don't forget to ad a bit of wheel bearing grease, as that helps it fit together better.
Dont forget to replace the IHS with a larger copper one
Oh and put thermal pads in between the aluminum fins of the cooler for maximum heat dissapation.
I'm feeling so sorry for this kid. Is he an intern? I have a feeling that he must've drawn the short straw... yes?
Yeah he seems like he is a little timid, which is fine, but clearly didn't know what he was doing and was just following a script or maybe a dart board with words.

He literally punctured the radiator on tutorial video. Oh no.

Facts, with a side of "muh racism" tears if you don't mind.

I feel bad for this guy. He obviously knows nothing about building pc’s and it seems like they gave him 5 min to study for a final!
Don't be. See what he's been doing on twitter. He's incredibly rude and still refuses to admit he did anything wrong.
i dunno, maybe he said he could do it
'They made a few generalizations' Yeah, like that people are actually going to buy Battlefield 5.

The battlefield 5 comment made me cringe

PSU* shortage ;)
Thanks :)
He even said "u need some zip ties" in the beginning of the video as didn't do wire management
The video doesn’t exist anymore!
So much replay value, thanks for preserving!
CPU Holder Slot ? :(
Man... now all my PC Building jargons are all WRONG...!
Oh noes, ive put the cpu in the wrong place? whatdoidonow.

I died a bit when he mixed the stock thermal paste with the new one
I lost it when I noticed he didn't even have a single case fan orientated to exhaust heat lol
“It’s usually not enough”
Wat.
john j and no radiator fans were ever installed
too much is never enough i say cakke it on, then get a caulking gun and make sure to fill in the side gaps too :D
One paste removes heat from the other, numnuts
dint he say to put Thermal paste on the socket?
No, but he did refer to zip ties as tweezers
Aren´t you supposed to apply thermal paste right into the center of the cpu in order to get an even layer of thermal paste?
yeah, but you shouln't already have paste on the cooler prior to putting another layer of paste on the cpu. its overkill, and there's also technically more risk of inconsistency in relieving heat because you are working with two mediums instead of one. or you have more paste than necessary which can spill over. ive never actually had anything negative happen from spilling over, but im paranoid about metals getting near a socket that shouldn't be there. it just sounds like an unnecessary risk, and if some new guy builds a computer this way he could go over the top.
@@TheRealFobican no, see GamersNexus reviews of applying thermal paste. Mostly it should be a stripe in the middle of the hs from top to bottom
The short circuit statement and the thermal paste application are pure gold.

Don't worry guys, hes a gamer, got the gamer glasses on to make sure.
Funnily enough. He used a character that is considered to be the top choice of "cancerous" players.
Thickness of TIM on CPU doesn't matter that much. You can watch a video from Gamers Nexus for proof.
Artic Silver 5 (one of the most well known brand of TIM) is conductive. It doesn't have to be liquid metal lol
