I am a jet fighter crew chief (mechanic) and I was using K & N filters on all my vehicles and recently found out that they are not the best to use on turbo engines. Great video! I'll be switching to this oil on my next oil change. Toyota told me they found no external leaks on my 2012 Camry, 4 cyl, AFRE engine (a known oil burner, even with routine 5K oil service) and I need an engine rebuild. The car runs well, I have 200K on it and I just keep an eye on the oil level for now. From looking at various channels the consensus I get is crudded, carbon seized oil control rings, allowing oil into the combustion chamber. Also, I commend you because most channels do not respond to viewer comments and I see you try to.
thank you for your comment, I do try to answer all comments sent to my channel... I'd say I'm a 98% response rate ;) I hope I continue to see a reduction in oil consumption and piston slap. Right now the truck is down while I rebuild the transmission. Stay tuned!
I've been using it on our 2015 chevy equinox with the terrible 2.4. Based on how the filter looked its definitely cleaning up some carbon. I'll probably start using it on my mom's 2012 camry to prevent any problems, hopefully. Though it's only got about 30,000 miles on it
@@smallish_mk3733 best time to start using an oil like this is early in the engine's life, to prevent the build-up. I just hope their claims are true, but then again, I've already seen a reduction in oil consumption.
@DrivingIntelligence her camry doesn't consume any measurable amount but our equinox burns a fair amount. I usually have to add a qt at about 2,000 miles doing 3k intervals. Long highway drives, it burns even more. So, hopefully, it slows the consumption
Wow. I'm honestly glad and shocked to see someone actually reading the directions on the back of the jug of oil. I've seen a few videos and articles where someone will use the Valvoline R&P and after the first oil change say that it isn't working like the commercial stated. Also, as a few have pointed out, you need to keep an eye on your oil pressure gauge because this stuff can actually remove enough sludge to lower the flow of oil through the filter.
Excellent point and why I will change the oil at 3k miles. I bought an oil filter cutting tool to see what the insides look like. I'm not so concerned, when I replaced the timing chains, the valve train and heads were spotless.
Lake Speed Jr has a great in depth look at Valvoline Restore. I am bias as my Dad had one job after college and it was with Valvoline....but Mr Speed does not take sides. Thanks
I’ve had a ton of comments about his video. I wish that video would have shown more progress toward a 100% clean piston. My test is real world. Once I replace the transmission in my truck I’ll continue with progress updates
I just bought my first 5qt. jug of Valvoline R&P for my 1999 Camry 4 cyl w/ 200k. I had been using Pennzoil Natural Gas High Mileage which my engine really loves (compared to the Walmart synthetic I had begun using- but got a big puff of smoke at morning start-up. This suggested valve seal wear, however, the smoke mostly stopped with the Pennzoil). My engine uses about a 3/4 qt every 600-800 miles I'd say. Can't wait to see if this burning slows down over the next 20K miles with this Valvoline.
Thanks for checking in. Does your engine blow blue smoke at initial start? That does indicate worn valve seals. And does it smoke when you're at high rpm in gear and let your foot off the gas? That also indicates valve seals. I don't see how the oil will make a difference with valve seal issues. It might be the color of the smoke between the Walmart & Pennzoil brands is what you're observing.
Valvoline restore & protect is designed to gently clean over time. This is to avoid plugging the oil filter. You should watch lake speed jrs tour of their engine testing facility where they explain the characteristics of this truly one of a kind engine oil 👍🏻
I saw his video, but I wasn’t impressed with their demonstration of Pistons being cleaned. I think they could’ve done a better job, however, that doesn’t keep me from trying the product and as I note in the video, I've experienced reduced oil consumption which may be due to reduced ring deposits.
@@DrivingIntelligence Again it takes time. Good to hear you are seeing some results with Valvoline Restore & Protect. Waiting is the hardest part.
I put the 5w30 Restore and Protect in my boyfriend's 08 Honda Fit last oil change along with an extra extra oversized filter (Baldwin B202). Already the valvetrain noise has reduced significantly. My car (79 Subaru with 89 EA71S engine) can't run it as it's too thin (specs a 10w-50) That engine is very clean anyway, I get to see under the valve covers for a valve adjustment every 20,000 miles or roughly 2x/year and it is spotless. I am gonna try using this oil im my Honda Accord 2012 with 200K miles on it. I don't understand why everybody says about 4 oil changes. According to the recent video from Lake Speed Jr. at the Valvoline Test Lab, this oil already cleaned pistons significantly after 4K miles/90 hrs of use. So, you also noticed a significant drop in oil consumption after all, right. It leads me to thinking that this oil could have cleaned the area under the piston rings thus restoring the rings flexibility that eventually led to reduced oil consumption. I will definitely try it my next oil change. Really looking forward to see more updates from you regarding its performance. Thanks
The "4 oil changes" claim is from Valvoline. They make the claim that after 4 oil changes, pistons will be returned to factory cleanliness. Your thinking is my thinking... my oil consumption is down, hopefully because the rings are now free to move and expand within the ring lands. My truck is out of commission with a transmission rebuild, but once back on the road, I'll continue to report my use of this oil. With regard to Lake Speed's video, I was not completely impressed. They should have shown piston improvement as claimed by Valvoline. They only showed a piston that has some removal of build-up. Lost opportunity with that video.

I had transitioned to TOP TIER gas, done EPR 109 engine flushes had top end BG cleaning at 30k and 50K. Told the dealer to fill with Valvoline R & P oil 5W30 after 2nd piston soak. I do a couple REDLINE WOT sprints each day.. For any with same problem... EPR engine flush or do Yamalube ring free shock treatment. Do piston soak with Berryman's B-12 with multi days of moving pistons & refills. Spray Amsoil power foam in intake manifold. or CRC stuff.. Results will depend on how much mileage and carbon is there. After fixing , I am going to 3k changes
@@DrivingIntelligence I don't think so and I know Toyota has 2 injectors /cylinder. It has something to do with high compression ration and/or high heat to constantly burn off carbon.Mazda says it engineered the skyactiv engines to keep the temperatures on the intake valves higher than other DI engines, which prevents carbon accumulation. Given the lack of buildup issues, it seems like it's working to a large extent.
Some engines also have piston slap on cold start normally. The old Subaru EA series engines specifically with forged pistons have piston slap on cold start even when newly rebuilt. The clearances are very large especially on the EA71S. I drive one I rebuilt 200,000 miles ago. Slapped before the rebuild, after the rebuild, and now 200,000 miles later. Zero bore wear whatsoever. The low tension rings on the EA71S don't help. But it doesn't harm anything, it goes away after the engine warms up.

Its not a one time fix thing. The oil is made so it cleans at a certain rate to not overwhelm the filter. So full effect will come after longer use. Check out lake speed jrs newest video where he visits valvoline to talk about that oil
I plan to use Valvoline restore & protect on my 03 Silverado 4.3 V6 with about 90k miles. I drive it 1,000 miles a year, so it might take several years for me to see an improvement. Truck was neglected and developed sludge, when oil pan was removed...it looked like a perfect mold of jello.
I've not taken the engine apart. If you check my Timing Chain Video Series, you'll see my engine was very clean likely due to my previous use of Royal Purple Oil. If I ever get into the engine, I will surely share what it looks like inside.

FYI,if your motor already has piston slap using this oil that supposedly cleans carbon build up off the pistons & out of the ring groves. Removing the carbon from the piston skirts will increase piston to wall clearance a bit making current piston slap worse, not better. This oil was never designed to reduce piston slap & was wondering where you got the impression it could reduce piston slap.
My research has shown that stuck rings can cause piston slap. I never claimed that Valvoline promised this. I have two F150's with the 5.4 engine, one is whisper quiet, and this one has piston slap at start up. I'll give you a spoiler before my next update video, I've been rebuilding my transmission and started this truck recently after it sat for over a month. ZERO PISTON SLAP. This truck has always had piston slap since I bought it used with 165k miles on the clock. Maybe it's gone...
good info... thank you, I'll try that. The car is parked far too much and as you probably know, cars don't like to sit idle. How much Mystery Oil did you pour in the tank?
You are gonna want to swap out the oil filter one or two times between changes with that restore and protect. I saw another video a guy used that in a high mileage mustang v6. Dude checked the filter after about 500 miles and it was full of sludge. Im not saying thats the case with your truck but it would be worth a filter swap to see what it caught.
Spray the whole bottom with rust remover. Soak it down. We used to use Jhospho but they don't have it no more . Get the Phosric acid to spray on it. It looks like gun bluing when you rinse it off.
Great video I’m gonna be honest, my oil change is coming up and I do plan on using this but one thing is, can I continue using the restore and protect oil for every change or can i can go back to using my normal oil I use (Valvoline high mileage oil)
To be honest, once I'm finished with this test I'm returning to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum synthetic... you can switch back and forth, but Valvoline says it takes 4 oil changes to get the full benefit of the Restore & Protect Product.
@@DrivingIntelligenceIf you don't mind me asking, do you think your engine runs better with Pennzoil ultra Platinum versus the Valvoline, restore and protect?
Im here looking to see if guys run this in there flat tappets! I want to run this in my 2.8 s10 but want to make sure i can run a synthetic in my ol girl, i really like the cleaning propertys of this oil but am afraid of not having zddp protection that conveniental oils have. From what i have found synthetic may be just fine for older engins!?
What year is your S10? I'm no expert on those specifically, but I would expect that the valve spring pressures on an old American truck engine are low enough to be a non issue. Also, unless you specifically buy a high ZDDP oil, most conventional oils don't have any more ZDDP than synthetic oils. The API limits the ZDDP that can be in any 30 grade or thinner oils with an SM approval or later to ~800 PPM. 40 grade and thicker is allowed to have more, but that doesn't mean it actually will.
@@DrivingIntelligence so I had to replace my driver side valve cover and had some very light build up. So I did an oil change using this oil. So far so good. I noticed a slight quietness to my engine as well. From my understanding doing some more reading, apparently you have to do multiple oil changes using this oil to really see the benefits. Hopefully it works, but you might need to be patient since it could take up to four oil change cycles. Keep in touch and let me know what happens.
@@DrivingIntelligence Got one at walmart with a toyota filter. These engines are known for clogging the piston return ports with hard carbonized sludge due to poor design so it might take more than 4 cycles. Will definitely update you if I get any improvement.
Thanks and good luck.
Sweet SVO!
I missed an opportunity to buy one back in the early 90s. I kick myself all the time for that mistake.
Thank you!
They are rare, but there are some for sale
Nice Mustang, and impressive results.
Thanks! 👍
Thanks for update results with Valvoline restore & protect Good video with various hits. I have a KIA which uses multi OIL qts between oil changes. ONLY has 69K miles. OIL use started before 50K. It is now waiting result of the 2nd piston soak! I was expecting a new engine after the 1st piston soak >>FAIL.
Good info, thanks. Seems some engines are more likely to develop blow-by than others.
@@DrivingIntelligence Mazda engineers designed their engines to counter GDI oil crap issues
@bobreese4807 two fuel injectors per cylinder?
@@DrivingIntelligence I don't think so and I know Toyota has 2 injectors /cylinder. It has something to do with high compression ration and/or high heat to constantly burn off carbon.Mazda says it engineered the skyactiv engines to keep the temperatures on the intake valves higher than other DI engines, which prevents carbon accumulation. Given the lack of buildup issues, it seems like it's working to a large extent.
Interesting, thank you
You need to run a bore scope down the combustion chamber and inspect for scored cyl walls. Usually, piston slap is to much wear.
But not always
@@DrivingIntelligence a bore scope is knowing, everything else is speculation.
@@theodorgiosan2570 exactly the behavior of my Ford 5.4L v8... noisy at start-up, but whisper quiet once warm. I have noticed quieter operation since I started using Valvoline R&P.
I got month ago got 01 silverado 4.8 last year replaced intake gasket heads caked up just replaced intake gasket again and heads about 60% clean and ports lil wet so it's working
That’s awesome
Definitely going to give this a shot, also gorgeous fleet. All well taken care of!
Thank you!
I kinda want to run this oil next time I need to change my oil
For me I’m pleasantly surprised, but time will tell
I'll keep using this oil for several thousand miles with more updates coming.
Its not a one time fix thing. The oil is made so it cleans at a certain rate to not overwhelm the filter. So full effect will come after longer use.
Check out lake speed jrs newest video where he visits valvoline to talk about that oil
@@magnusdanielsson2749 I just saw that video this morning. I need this oil!!
When was the last time you replace pcv valve, might be oil being push out the seals?
I use an oil catch can and if I had a PCV problem, I'd see it with the can. The PCV is in good working order as I've also inspected the unit.
Very interesting. Maybe Valvoline did make something new after all.
Hopefully I continue to see positive results
Have you noticed any internal cleaning?
I've not taken the engine apart. If you check my Timing Chain Video Series, you'll see my engine was very clean likely due to my previous use of Royal Purple Oil. If I ever get into the engine, I will surely share what it looks like inside.
You can tell that engine has been well taken care of that engine bay looks great
Thanks, I’m pretty anal about my vehicle maintenance. That’s why they always last four years and miles.
What a nice garage sir! Id stay out there all the time if i had a garage like that lol.
Lol, thank you. I love it, especially since I added HVAC!
@@DrivingIntelligence one day, if I get my act together I'll have a garage house. As in my garage is also my house.
@@vermontvermont9292 it's funny you mention that... I originally was going to build an apartment on top of a 4-car garage here in SC while I lived in California, but decided to move back east and have just this home, so it expanded! ;) patience and hard work will deliver! Took many years for me to get to this place. :)
@@DrivingIntelligence well I'm glad you made it out of Cali, and have some great content here for all of us on UA-cam. Thank you.
@vermontvermont9292 and thank you for your patronage
Looks like a great restore going on. Ford didn't have a watercooled center bearing, did you do anything about that?
That’s a great question, actually the 85 1/2 and 86 Mustang SVO did have a water cooled center bearing. I converted to that many years ago.
I have had fuel pumps make noise and ran Marvel Mystery oil or Lucas and had it go away
good info... thank you, I'll try that. The car is parked far too much and as you probably know, cars don't like to sit idle. How much Mystery Oil did you pour in the tank?
@DrivingIntelligence I belive it is 4 ounces for 10 gallons. The bottle has to ratios.
@@edbeck8925 thx, I'll check it out.
Excellent point... I plan to change the oil right away. Thank you
Spray the whole bottom with rust remover. Soak it down. We used to use Jhospho but they don't have it no more . Get the Phosric acid to spray on it. It looks like gun bluing when you rinse it off.
thanks, but the rest of the car has little to no rust. Would rather not use an acid spray on good paint. I'll keep it in mind for other projects.
Sweet garage
Thx!
Original Ecoboost?

I am going to put this in my 1998 Dodge Caravan 4 cyl with 172k miles.

@@DrivingIntelligence Roger that but overall great video and I love your mustang 😎
Thank you! One of these days I’m gonna get it back together complete. Right now, I am focused on the F150 transmission.

Im here looking to see if guys run this in there flat tappets! I want to run this in my 2.8 s10 but want to make sure i can run a synthetic in my ol girl, i really like the cleaning propertys of this oil but am afraid of not having zddp protection that conveniental oils have. From what i have found synthetic may be just fine for older engins!?
best answer will come directly from Valvoline Technical Support. I'd look up there number on the internet and give them a call.
If you find any info report back please. Im in the same boat as you with my 06 colorado that has 280k on regular oil. Thanks
Sounds like the rings are beginning to seat on that truck.
I think so… and hope so ;)
Sweet little pony.
Fix the truck.
Do the Valvoline.
But replace 1 quart with Nitro -70 wt..oil. Kendall -Lucas - what's

I guess that stuff increases viscosity?
Valvoline R&P content starts at 4:40.
Just like the time marks say, and as I showed at the beginning of the video. ;)
But is it better than Amsoil Signature Series?
can't answer that question. I started using this oil because of their rather large claims.
@@DrivingIntelligence I'm eager to try out this oil. I normally use Penzoil Ultra Platnium.
I don’t think it can hurt, and I have seen improvement as I mentioned in my videos
Reading a lot of comments, it's getting some really good reviews.
Instead of denting your tubing. Why didn't you just get a slightly smaller V-belt
that is an excellent question. I searched high and wide to find a belt that would fit and prevent impact, couldn't find anything. But truth be told, the tolerances of the design were too tight anyway.
@@DrivingIntelligence I figured as much.
KIA/Hyundai joined the 2 injectors per cylinder a couple years ago.
Should help resolve carbon buildup on intake valves.
Check engine oil dipstick nearly 3 months and change it with new filter. If you haven't driven 3000 miles in one week.
Don't think I understand your comment
@@DrivingIntelligence engine oil dipstick you pulled out and checked the oil color. Brown color is good. Oil will get darker black look for nearly 3 months. Driving a car or truck back and forth to work every day. Most people and I can't get 3000 miles before 3 months. Trying out a new oil release is good to pull an engine oil dipstick out to check the color monthly test. Auto mechanic School from 1989 from service manuals said 3 months driving daily or 3000 miles before 3 months.
My 2017 KIA Sorento FAILED 2nd piston soak (2 qts low at 1k miles) and because the dealer had trouble connecting paperwork to KIA techline group. I am on a 3rd piston soak trial!!!! Ok..This is not going to help "piston slap"...The clearance issue piston/ rings/cylinder walls from cold/operating temp..Rebuild/machining..Heres a classic I would use..Engine Restorer CSL(Copper-Silver-Lead) It fiils in rings/ bearings/guides..Valvoline is just rehashing with additives from competitors....
Can you please cite your studies and experience that leads you to this conclusion? Just to help you see possibilities, I did an Internet search and this came up at the top:
“Can piston rings cause piston slap?
Several factors can contribute to the development of piston slap in vehicles. These include: Excessive wear or damage to piston rings. Incorrect piston-to-cylinder wall clearance.”
