Was using Valvoline High Mileage Advanced for my 16 Civic but I think next time I might try this and use a Wix filter. Noticed that if I use a synthetic filter seems my mileage went down but i'm not sure if its the Oil that's giving me better mileage now since I went to the service center and they put the Honda Oil and Honda Filter in it. So the next change I am doing so I don't know if I want to use the Restore and Protect of Penzoil Ultra Platinum.
I just changed my oil in my 23 4runner today and used Valvoline Restore and Protect 0w20 for the first time. So far the engine sounds a little quieter and smoother but Ill see when I change it in 4k miles from now.
Just so you know, not all cars have "flood mode." Before I serviced my wife's 4th-gen 2.4L CR-V, I went for a drive, then as soon as I stopped, I switched it off and did the "flood mode" thing and found that it started instantly and the revs were already over 4000RPM before I was off the pedal (and I got off it extremely quickly). Moral of the story: if possible to do so and install it without spilling oil everywhere, DO fill the oil filter, and DO NOT just rely on "flood mode" (which might not be there) because that could be the fastest way to destroy your engine, thinking you're priming the oil galleries.
Hey Rich, as a tech i dont believe in a bunch of additives but i do believe in Seafoam motor treatment. I use it in the fuel of my f 150 5.0 occasionally and all my small motors at begining and end of the season. I also put it in my wifes f150 4.6 in the engine oil a few days before oil change. It actually did reduce oil consumption, i guess it did clean sludge at oil control rings. Highly recommend Seafoam motor treatment

Valvoline Restore and Protect smells burnt right from the jug. Been a long time subscriber and basically follow your videos and learned a ton from watching you. Thanks as always for the good videos. Also now that I am thinking about it, I never checked if Valvoline Restore and Protect meets my 3.5 eco boost API service spec since it has turbos?
Hey ford boss i just started using this on my 21 3.5 eb with 40k. I deffinately notice its a little more quieter! What is the difference with the 810s vs fl500?
just curious, why do you use the 820 filter over the 500s? I use the 820 on my wife's expedition and the 500s on my F150, I know the 820 is about 1/2 the price but didn't know it would fit on the F150 as the diameter is wider. Thanks! Looking forward to the catch can results.
The sealing gasket on the 820 S is the same diameter as on the 500 filter , No leaks & a bigger filter ,I'm doing the same on my 21 5.0 150 that I bought new ,I cut the original factory filter open at the 1'st change & was shocked at how small the filter material is ,Looks like it belongs in a 15 HP riding lawn mower engine instead of a 400 HP V-8 engine.
Hey Boss! You did a Walmart oil comparison video before the Valvoline restore and protect came out. Would you rate this number one now or is the Penzoil ultra platinum still up there with it? Was thinking about switching from Mobile One extended performance to restore and protect Valvoline but I can’t complain about an engine running the M1 with 320k on it. What do you think?
Hey rich I’ve recently switched to a fl820 on my 23 eco boost. But my question is 820 has 16 psi and the 500 has 8 psi. What role does that play? Thanks for all you content appreciate you
Hey Rich, hope all is well. Work vehicle has a 2.3 ecoboost with 80,000 miles. It sees a lot of idle time but I change it every 3k miles. Would this oil be a good choice for a TDI engine like this?
Hey Rich. Can you do a video on your thoughts about prefilling oil filters? Motor oil geek just showed data that the thinner the oil, the more you need to prefill the oil filter. Your thoughts? I’m definitely going to start doing it when possible.
His thoughts for the past few years have been that you should use flood mode or equivalent if your car has it. Basically a way to crank the engine without combustion so that the system primes the oil filter before the real first start to prevent turning the engine over with ignition while there is basically no oil pressure because that causes some extra wear that you can prevent. If your car doesn't have clear flood mode or equivalent then you prefill your oil filter as much as you can. Basically you can do one or the other, the thing that matters is that the oil filter is full (ideally) before the engine starts up with ignition for the first time after an oil change.
@@johnlopez3001 If you can prefill the oil filter, you're good to go, you should get oil pressure reasonably quick with either method on the first start after that. 👍
@@ZWortek I always pre fill, but only from the top of a freshly opened and unshaken newly bought container. Gravity is a wonderful filter, so even if there were some small impurities in your new oil container, they would be sitting safely on the bottom.
I'd love to have a lift at home.. A drive on and one that you put the arms under the jack points.. Would save so much money over time going to mechanics!
Hi Boss. Just started using the Valvoline Restore & Protect in my vehicles. I noticed that it has a distintive smell. Know what additives it might be? Vehicles are running well with it.
I find Valvoline products to be of high value, and use them in everything including modern vehicles, flat-tappet cam vehicles, and air-cooled vehicles.
I'd check Valvoline's FAQ about Restore & Protect. If I recall correctly they claim it's good for All vehicles new or old that use API SP/6A. It isn't Dexos Rated so if using on a GM vehicle that "requires" Dexos for Warranty... You may want to wait (they recommend using Advanced, if you want Dexos1 rated Oil) until Warranty is up. Per a recent R&P review video discussing how Oil is constantly battling carbon deposits and seems like R&P use would be recommended any/all the time. Been reading how people are thinking of cycling between several R&P changes then going to their regular Oil(s) and swapping back and forth as needed... To keep things "clean"
It's good for any mileage really. If the engine is new or relatively clean then it should keep it as clean as possible, but if it's dirty it should clean it up within a few oil changes. There is also a more hardcore version that Valvoline made for Cummins (premium blue restore) that will really clean a dirty engine like crazy but it's super expensive and you actually have to worry about clogging the filter up with contaminants that are cleaned off by the oil. Valvoline restore and protect was made to be more forgiving and consumer friendly so that's why it takes 4 oil changes to reduce the risk of clogging up the filter too fast.
@@ZWortek It looks like after just an initial 4000 miles there appears to be significant cleanup of the Pistons using R&P. With its "Active Clean" technology breaking down/suspending the deposits, and the "Liqui-Shield" Additives... keeping those Deposits from reforming/causing problems as it cleans (? Would hope so with a 79% stronger antiwear protection vs an Industry Standard/GF6A Oil...)
Since I purchased my 2022 Ford Transit 350 brand new, I’ve been doing the oil change at 5,000 miles, and I am at 50,000 miles right now. I should not have any carbon deposit.
I worry about plugging up the CAT since it cleans that fast. I seen other video's of pistons before and after and yes it does clean but is it doing more harm than good?
I have an off the cuff question forgive me if it comes off wrong. Whats your opinion on Kiwis working in the USA? Im from NZ and moving over soon for a 2 year (K1 Visa ) and I will be working in in Texas. Reason why I am asking, I have been watching your videos for years ( starting when you were at ford doing The Oil restoration videos on trucks etc ) and seen some recent videos about other people coming over
I'm thinking about using this oil in my 5.4 3V but I don't see anything on the VOA that is much different than other quality oil that would clean an engine better. Am I missing something?
Question. What is the point of changing filters? My obs takes fl820 my ecoboost 3.5 take a fl500. Does the 820 have more pleats? It's obviously a larger filter just wondering the benefits.
@@FordBossMe Yes, I have oil changed every 5000 but I’ve been using whatever filter the local shop puts in and wanted to go back to a Motorcraft filter, didn’t know if I should go with the fl500 or step up to fl820?
Bigger filter= more filtering media= cleaner oil. 820S has a higher bypass psi than the 500, so it wont bypass as much and let unfiltered oil through to the engine.
So far my 2011 5.0 f150 is not liking this oil. It is noisier at idle and slight knock at low rpm throttle(fast food drivethru). So I changed the oil and filter at 1500 miles, threw in a can of bg epr in case the oil moved some crud around, and refilled again with 5w 30 valvoline R and P. Again seems to have developed another new odd sound at idle. I will 100% be sticking with pennzoil ultra platinum after I finish the 15qts of this new oil. Will update this comment after next oil change. Who knows the old girl might be unjust in giving the new stuff a bad look.

@fordbossme.... How would this oil stack up to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum?
Would you recommend using this on newer (late model) vehicles?
Just go Purchase a GoldPlug, that tells you the top quality oil by monitoring metal particles on each oil change.
Does a Phenomenal Job!!!
Hey rich I’ve recently switched to a fl820 on my 23 eco boost. But my question is 820 has 16 psi and the 500 has 8 psi. What role does that play? Thanks for all you content appreciate you
I have a gen 1 3.5 ecoboost, should I stick to Penzoil ultra platinum or should I try out R&P? Thanks love the channel
2006 ford escape won’t start with foot to floor, i never thought of using it to prime the filter 🤯 man thats genius
@@ZWortekUnfortunately my Honda doesn't have Flood Mode, so I pre - fill my oil filter.
I guess I could also remove the fuel pump relay.
So this or ultra platinum? 😮
I'd love to have a lift at home.. A drive on and one that you put the arms under the jack points.. Would save so much money over time going to mechanics!
What do you think of used bg moa with Valvoline restoring protect? Is the bg moa needed ?
Hi Boss. Just started using the Valvoline Restore & Protect in my vehicles. I noticed that it has a distintive smell. Know what additives it might be?
Vehicles are running well with it.
I don't but I'll do some more research
I did my oil change yesterday with super tech 10w30 and MMO and a super tech 3614 filter engine seems to run smoother now
forget mmo
@@bobb9922 why ?
@bobb9922 what should you use instead if you can't use this to clean the engine while driving?
I find Valvoline products to be of high value, and use them in everything including modern vehicles, flat-tappet cam vehicles, and air-cooled vehicles.
I do my own oil changes so why do I find it fascinating watching Rich do one?😅
Same here
bro, ive been on the pennzoil ultra plat 5/20 based on your reviews and recommendation. ('17 f150 5.0/6R80). Should i switch up to this ?
I noticed when I used this for the first time the oil had a natural gas smell. Wasn’t expecting that.
Can you run the FL820 on a 2011 f150 5.0?
Did you ever get the oil test results back?
No
What kind of tool was that @1:00 ? I like that. Seems very useful. Is there a name for that thing?

Would you recommend this in a jeep 4.0 engine? Your wisdom will greatly be appreciated. I’m worried about the flat tappet cam for obvious reasons.
You be fine not enough valves springs pressure to wipe the cam but if you worried just use there vr1 oil
How many miles would you recommend between these 4k? thanks going to try it
5k max
Them Tires look sick on the F-150 I’m price them out and put on my Tundra
Any updates to this ? been watching he channel for it ; - )
Should do a before and after with a bore scope.
Rich, is there a specific mileage where restore and protect becomes advantageous to use or should it be used after a couple years(30K miles)?
No idea
I read in an Amazon review that older vehicles over 100k miles might leak. Guess will stick with advanced high mileage
If swapping to full synthetic 5 w30 in 2023 f150 5.0 what do you recommend interval wise? Stay with 5k or could i go longer between changes.
Stay 5k
can't wait for the results!
I used Wallyworld Supertech oil. Never had a problem.
They wouldn't print it in comic books if it wasn't true. Jethro Bodine, The Beverly Hillbilliies.
all those keys are heavy for your iginition, how do you like listening to that music all day
Honestly I don't hear it
I know they are heavy but I am good
Since I purchased my 2022 Ford Transit 350 brand new, I’ve been doing the oil change at 5,000 miles, and I am at 50,000 miles right now. I should not have any carbon deposit.
I change mine in my 98 Ford e250 pretty regularly depending on what the engine sounds like or feels
I did this oil 5w-30 with this oil filter and my 5.0 tick is gone.. this had bugged me for yrs. Did the tick from new 2019 f150 5.0
I worry about plugging up the CAT since it cleans that fast. I seen other video's of pistons before and after and yes it does clean but is it doing more harm than good?
Why would an oil that cleans your engine be doing harm.
A dirty engine does more harm.
who's got los dos carnales playing in the background lol i know its not you hahahaha
I have an off the cuff question forgive me if it comes off wrong. Whats your opinion on Kiwis working in the USA? Im from NZ and moving over soon for a 2 year (K1 Visa ) and I will be working in in Texas. Reason why I am asking, I have been watching your videos for years ( starting when you were at ford doing The Oil restoration videos on trucks etc ) and seen some recent videos about other people coming over
Coming Over Correctly Like You Are is no issue
If you come LEGALLY you will be welcomed with open arms! Come across the Rio Grande just because we have a bozo for a President, not so much………😐
Ford has discontinued the FL-500 and replaced it with the FL-2121. It’s a slightly larger filter.
820 s has silicone valve available at walmarts - high rated filter
I'm thinking about using this oil in my 5.4 3V but I don't see anything on the VOA that is much different than other quality oil that would clean an engine better. Am I missing something?
Use it
I can use an FL 820 filter on my 2018 5.0?
I have a 5.0 myself and use the fl500 what’s the advantage using the 820? Thanks
Larger capacity and more filtering

Can I use the FL820 on my new 2023 5.0 F150?
RIch, I did not know that you love your Mexican corrido music!!!! Lol...
I don't, sometimes it's nice but it was other employees
Question. What is the point of changing filters? My obs takes fl820 my ecoboost 3.5 take a fl500. Does the 820 have more pleats? It's obviously a larger filter just wondering the benefits.
More filtering surface with filtering
@@FordBossMe that's what I assumed. Thanks for answering.

flood mode is that only for Ford vehicles or can you do that with any vehicles?
I have a 2011 Silverado, it works on GM trucks as well.
Pretty much any vehicle with fuel injection.
Can I use this in a VW 3.6 VR6
Bro you got 10#s on that key 😂😂 that ignition switch will wear out quick
It's not ignition, he was cranking for flood mode to prefill the oil filter.
@@VanillaWahlberg I was talking about the weight of all the stuff on his key ring lol
Any particular reason you went from FL500 to FL820?
Anything new? Lol how many miles you got?
