This is a tutorial on my way to do slow stitching. It is a very small piece and will give you an idea of what it’s like.

@@lauraemery4185 my husband use to criticize my growing fabric stash since we married 34 years ago. About 5 years ago he built me 2 mini storage sheds to hold the overflow from our former master bedroom (my new craft room). After retiring the guest bedroom is quite cozy ❤
Our cats would walk off with my teeny bits of fabric stuck to their tails until I switched to zippered vinyl bags from comforter purchases. I like to see all the bits when sewing crumb quilts strips but my laundry basket idea was too tempting for our cats. 🍄🍄

It is wonderful that this has become a fashionable way of spending time again, but it is also strange to me that yet another name has been invented for something people have been doing for centuries!
I love that, as in the past, it is acceptable for each of us to invent the way of doing things that suits them and what they have to hand to make something. No patterns or how to instruction manual required! This was how I have worked since 1957. Children were given scraps, access to mother's button box and left to their own devices unless they asked for help that any woman in our village would willingly give. It is a tradition I would love to see return as it gave me the basis of a life-long pleasure. Now, we underestimate what pre-school aged children can start to learn.

I was one of those people who thought junk journaling looked pretty but was kind of silly. Once again I have been proven wrong. I have an idea in my head and have been searching and here the junk journalers have completely solved it for me. I’m thinking of doing this on a larger scale creating a “fabric” to make a purse. This is perfect. It’s beautiful.

On Monday, I found a book in my favourite section of the library ‘Essential Stitch Guide’ by Judith Baker Montano. Then tonight this video of yours showed up on my feed. I think the universe is telling me to add another fibre craft to my life.

I think I have been a slow stitcher all my life as I do everything by hand I even quilt large quilts by hand. So I will continue to do so. Regards from New Zealand

You might like to try using a sashiki thimble & needle for hand stitching .. its great for sewing/stitching through thicker materials as well
I have both sashiko needles and thimbles but me and thimbles don’t get on. I sew like a dog in socks when I wear one 🥰

I found my way here via the lovely Annie Claxton’s channel - love, love, love your explanation and interpretation of slow stitching, so much so that I was inspired to create my own little 4 x 4 square straight away! Was so pleased as how it turned out too, I just love that there are no ‘rules’ - whatever makes you happy, and it really is a lovely, relaxing hobby. New subscriber here - can’t wait for more videos!

Thank you for a lovely video. I think your slow stitch piece, with the birds is lovely, also the piece you are demonstrating. I think it is a good idea to start with a small piece and then you won't get tired of it. I like embroidery but often doubt myself, and avoid starting a piece. So starting small is a good idea. 😊

This is adorable. I need to mend a few pairs of jeans. Was going to try Sashiko but I think making a slow stich patch similar to yours (probably not as detailed) will look much better. Thank you for the idea.

A small suggestion, if you use pins, put them on the back instead of the front. I do a lot of applique and putting the pins on the back sure does save my sanity. I haven't tried slow stitching, but I fear that it might be the next project after the last one, or is that after the last few?

Wow!! Never heard of "slow stiching".... have been looking for projects to do when traveling in our RV. 🎉 Your feed popped today with Meditative Scrolls... started to surf thru your other tutorials. This one really spoke to me - have done machine applique projects years ago and found them very satisfying. I was thinking I might try using glue stick or small pieces of iron on fusible to initially attach my bits .... Thanks for this - ready to get going on projects to attach to greeting cards!! ❤🌻🇺🇸
Hello and welcome! I’m so pleased you enjoyed the video. Glue stick is fine for attaching small pieces - the iron on fusible sometimes causes issue with stitching but try a small piece on a scrap and see how it goes. Happy stitching!

Pins are definitely a danger and should be avoided where possible. This was very interesting thank you. I have been wanting to learn stump work for years, I have the books, but haven't done it yet. I think combined with your style I am inspired to have a go. Many thanks. I could even incorporate my tatting. Yeah.
Agreed - pins are not my friend! :). This way of stitching is so inclusive that almost anything goes :) Enjoy having some fun with it 🥰

This is just crazy quilting.
It has similarities to crazy quilting but there are no seams and the stitching process is generally done in a mindful way.
I do a lot of this but I really enjoyed your video ! I subscribed !

16:30 I wonder, if a little bit of glue stick to the back of these pieces would cause any issues, so it's easier to tack them all down? (probably wouldn't work well with sheer fabrics) but would that be an option? And to help me with placement I'd take a quick photo of it when I was happy. In case things got messed around. It's what I do with paper collaging because my cat loves to help...🙂 I really love how these were built up. They look so amazing.
A little bit of temporary fabric glue or even a stick glue would be fine! 🥰. So pleased you enjoyed this.

I just discovered this fabulous art couple of days ago and let me say that your video is the best I've seen so far. Totally for me as a newbie and have no enough fabric scraps so I asked my friend who has been a tailor for 30 years to save every tiny piece of fabric for me and I will start at the very soon to make my first slow stitching square 🤩🤩😍😍

I so enjoyed this video,i love to crewel when i was younger i did crewling and this fits my need to continue to find joy in hand sewing, my goal is to make a paintbrush holder, have you ever thought of doing something like that big of a project with the beautiful stiches on the out side...i keep looking for hand sew paintbrush holder video with a tie to go around like your bookcover/ wrap, i just need the inside to hold bruses seperately.(.so would i just use another fabric to make the inside seperate holder? )but ever video is with a sewing machine..and battening, i just want to re use upcycle jean fabric but with the lovey designs works on outside..its hard to see a project in your head but unable to figure out how to put all pieces together lol...mikelle art mom🎨👩🎨✍
Thank you Mikelle - I think I know exactly what you mean. I could also do with a brush holder - I shall have to see what I can come up with :). The jeans fabric is a great idea as it is strong for use. I imagine the inside would be a contrasting fabric but with perhaps more of a utility feel about it. You’ve got me thinking now :
You could put the threads on a bird table, they would love them for their nests
I actually read a few posts about how threads left out could be potentially damaging for birds and so I am looking at other ways to incorporate my threads back into pieces of my work instead :)

Halloooo, Tori! I came to you from Our Annie's Arty Farty channel. I've also heard about you from my friend Kari Gibson. Annie has been trying to get me to start stitching for a while now. I'm a mixed media artist and painter and I've never tried stitching except for the occasional button. I'm noodling around on YT to get some ideas and to try to figure out where to begin. I'm literally starting from scratch. I've ordered a lovely embroidery kit from Amazon with a delicious array of beautiful threads. I've no fabric yet. I'm thinking to go to a fabric store and have a wee look around - wouldn't you say that's my best bet? I've no one in my life that I can beg scraps off. And the fabric remnants I see on Amazon are a wee bit overwhelming. They are all such big pieces! And so difficult to buy sight unseen - or "unfelt" as it were lol. I really enjoyed this! Thank you. Hi Lindsey - so pleased you found me :). One thing I might suggest is to look at old clothes and use the fabric from them. I regularly cut up old clothing to use in my pieces and sometimes I go to charity shops (thrift stores/op shops) to find pieces to use. They often have some clothing which you can get a lot of material from and also they sometimes have sewing material too :). Hope that’s helpful :) ❤️
