Man, i'm a drummer from California and I have played with a 'cat outta Dayton Ohio who plays guitar named Craig, who told me that he was Sugarfoot's last student before he passed. But yeah this live version is on point like icycles!
1970's music. I love it. The Ohio Players was one of the best funk bands from that era. The horn section, high octane vocals, drums and most of all (Sugar Foot). Wow!!! What a band!
Yes yes mr. Brown, my sentiments exactly. The Ohio Players in their own right cannot be compared to from that era. When you heard them you knew immediately it was them. What a time it was. Even during the early days with Junie. He was the real bomb. Between him and Sugarfoot I was always in stitches!
This is the type of old school music that we all grew up with God knows watching this and the way we used to dress years ago brings back so many wonderful memories watching this makes you wish that you can go back in time
I still crush on Diamond. Oooweee such a baaad assss on those drums. Billy Beck sultry keyboards. Only Sugarfoot, the OG of the growl "aww girl" and "well well well". Others copied him.
It was tough being a white boy who listened to mostly Soul, R&B and Funk in the seventies and eighties when every other whitey was into Hard Rock and Heavy Metal !!! I'm not a "follower" type of person so it never stopped me from listening to great music, Isley's, EWF, TEDDY, Stylistics, Rufus&Chaka, Al G., etc. Nobody had better album covers than OP‼️
I was fortunate to grow up in Dayton, Ohio, funk was around our city in such great force it was normal to see national artists on an everyday basis just in passing, Ohio Players, Heatwave, Dayton, Slave, Steve Arrington (hall of fame), Faz O, Lakeside. Roger Troutman, Zapp, all came from Daytons westside, and I still see the ones that are still with us on occasion.
It's 2022 and I'm still listening, playing and love The Legendary "Ohio Players" They were often imitated but; never duplicated! Amazing trendsetters for the music industry! Most definitely! Love the horns, trumpets, guitars, keyboards & drums! Sugarfoot's singing put the fun, in the funk! 💕🎸 💕🎺 💕
For me, this song is what set The Ohio Players apart from other funk bands. Phenomenal jazz-infused instrumentation. Sugarfoot's vocals also blew my mind.
As an ex-sax, flute player from '70's and, true, we have our own preferences yet think about what you said. Sure, it 'sets them apart' and I agree but it's their style! Nobody sounded quite like them. Parliament/Funkedics had their own style, too, yet Players' musicianship, as you said, puts them in my Top 10 (okay, Top 5) R&B& Jazz 'bands' of ALL time! I love Players and saw them play this live.
Better then any music out there today . The background vocals were kicking and Diamond plays the hell out of the drums. I’m so glad I grew up with groups like The Ohio Players , AWB, Con Funk Shun, Cameo, Sly & The Family Stone, Heatwave, Brothers Johnson, Commodores , Bar-Kays, Earth Wind & Fire , Parliament , Graham Central Station , Isley Brothers, Johnny Guitar Watson , Gil Scott Heron ETC I could go on and on !!!!!Just nothing but pure vocals & music played by real musicians!!
Your list of phenomenal groups is exquisite and do we all wish and want to demand this excellence in our music 🎵🎶 Today, I want some group to please play some original and soothing lyrics that edify all Listener's and family members!!!!!😊
This is my favorite band of all times. The Ohio Players. These are the greatest musicians who ever lived. Greatest song writers and greatest instrumentalist of all times.
There you have it kids..... music up there with Miles Davis and any of the giants of black music. OH were pioneers of supreme musicianship. Learnt their craft the hard way. Playing live. Anywhere. Everywhere. Hopefully new generations of kids can master music in the same way. And keep the legacy alive. Black music deserves to be about so much more than it is right now. R.I.P. Sugarfoot....
One of the greatest bands of all time and the most underrated and under appreciated bands of all time. They brought the funk and dropped in a pinch of jazz.
I knew it only take some time for someone to use the word underrated for this legendary band I keep asking why do people throw that word underrated around on UA-cam sooo much is it a trend or something? Their music has been sampled covered they played to sold out shows all over the world they had 7 top ten singles on billboard not just the r and b charts but the pop charts too also about four or five top whole albums on billboard ain't nothing underrated about that don't get it twisted
@@anthonytaylor7928 Because as great as we think they are, they're even GREATER! Why is Maze, featuring Frankie Beverly the unofficial band of Black BBQ America? 😂 I'll take OP!
I was a preteen when my Dad took microphones to a club they were playing at in Germantown Ohio. At that time, their name was "Ohio Players and Another Exchange".
7 top ten hits on billboard four or five top ten albums on billboard not just on the r and b side but the pop charts too . Their music has been sampled and covered they played at sold out shows all over the world was on all of tv shows in the 70s ain't nothing underrated about that why do folks use the word underrated on UA-cam so much y'all need to chill with that it may count for some bands but not for these legends
Satch and Sugerfoot's tight performances makes this one of the top funk songs of all time! Can you imagine what the hot 70's Queens looked like back then that inspired this classic? I'm a white guy that was lucky enough to grow up in Dayton, Ohio during the 70's and funk has always been a part of my soul.
Yes ladies and gentlemen, that was LIVE, no pre-records, tapes, DJ inputs or anything yes. everything you heard was being produced by those bad players right there on that stage. They remaining members are still touring and still producing everything live on stage. please go see them, you will not be disapointed!!
And Jazz,,Sweet Sticky was played and was in regular rotation on the jazz stations in the US. Satch(Sax) played one the best sax solos ever on that recording..
everytime I listen to them it makes me feel so good on the inside take you back in the day ladies wasn't they wearing those outfits they had on wow don't see men to much wearing it like that oh my goodness
This is so ironic it's 2023 and I was just listening to this song at the gym today rock into it along with skin tight this group was so amazing and I'm so glad I grew up as a youngster listening to this type of music it's forever tattooed in my brain and my mental musical library
Ohio players were never underated.. They were top entertainers no doubt...and still are to this day in the archives. Awesome thank God for their blessings to humanity!
William Franklin that great as can for you to have all them amazing albums .like touch of pure heaven loving that just sweet candy eye candy of my life.
I bought a Saxophone and Trumpet when I was Hustling. Learned to play by ear. I can imitate anything if I hear it 1 time. Use to play in a park. Not knowing Some Melenated jazz Musicians were watching. I was about 28 then they were 60 +. They invited Me in, coached and taught Me. I love the horns.
I got a rare chance to meet sugarfoot behind stage as a young soldier in El Paso Tx, 1986..he was so so high and was sitting on this high chair and was cradling his guitar, slumped over.. while trying to talk to me...I said..are you okay?..and you are a true legend. He looked up and smiled.
I was fortunate enough to be stationed at Wright-Patt when the Players were hot! When it was no big deal to see Sugarfoot driving around downtown Dayton in a VW bug, & Roger Troutman or Steve Arrington talking outside their studio doing whatever. Thank you for posting this sample of the funky good times that they created.
Pure 70s Soul me and my boys in 1974 Fleetwood Cadillac on i-95 North headed to New York 2:00 in the morning and this on the cassette big up Carl & a Rickey
It just occurred to me that satch is playing the sax with no neck strap ! Takes a lot of strength to hold the base of the horn with the thumb of your right hand only and play it like he did .

I just saw the Ohio Players at the Hollywood Bowl on 8/25/17. They were one of the opening bands for Dave Koz. When I saw that they were going to be there, I knew I had to go! I googled and found out that all the original members were gone. It didn't matter to me. I drove 3hrs and stayed in Los Angeles to see them. The Ohio Players I did see put on a great show, everyone there love them, including myself.
Greg Webster is the only "original" Westbound Ohio Player left alive!! Marvin, was a Westbound and Mercury player but not original and yes he is still alive as well. Diamond, Chet, Billy, and Cumba Jones " Percussion" Mercury crew are still alive.
I really miss those days. I remember having a layover in Seoul, Korea in the summer of 1977. I went to a local club for a bit but things were kinda slow. There was this giant juke box with a great sound system. Looking through the songs I found this one, Love Rollercoaster and Skin Tight. The club started jumpin’!! Halfway across the world and the Players were knockin it out!!
Oh, boy, this is very jazzy, very funk... from 2:40 onwards, probably one of the most beautiful musical sections, not just for the guitar solo, but for the crescendo of the voice, the drums and the brass, and the end of the song, as if it could be picked up and continued. A sense of an unbeatable talent pool.
