  • Part 1 of this project, this is not worth it unless you already have this crank on hand to replace a bent one with. Prices for a new crank run around $50-100 depending where you source it from. Being the fact that you can buy a good used mower for that price that is why this is not worth doing. This video was done solely for my entertainment and for you guys watching it.

    Excellent, I have never seen the inside of the engine yet, only cracked it open enough to put down a bead of RED RTV to make a gasket to fix a oil leak on a Briggs 140cc OHV
    the old Briggs Flat head are my Fav (190cc)

      They aren’t too bad to take apart

    • @dfields9511
      @dfields9511 6 років тому

      They come apart easy, however in my case the Blade Adapter/Self-propped wouldn't come off . It looks like they hit something really hard which cause the gasket to tear and a massively leak oil. The Shaft wasn't bent but key was partially sheared , it still ran but not well. Yah the 140cc OHV briggs do come apart easier than the previous models. but there is something wrong with them that the Flywheel keys don't break easy enough to prevent block damage.

    Hi,
    I have an 88 Snapper V21 that I picked up. It has no fire, minimal compression and will not even cough for me. I have a new ignition coil ordered and it will probably need a set of rings and the carburetor is probably a mess. The only reason I am even doing anything on it is because it is light and should be pretty movable around my yard. I have a several year old HRR216 Honda but it is a load to move around the yard, even though it is self propelled. If I want to mow big stretches, I have a brand new Snapper SPX2342 lawn tractor, but there are just places the tractor will not go. The 88 V21 was abused by its previous owner. The idiot that owned it ran it without an air filter, hence the need for rings. It had 30# compression when I got it and 70# with a squirt of 30W in the cylinder, but that oil will burn off the first time I get it to run. I have looked at putting a new engine on it but they do not make this engine, anymore and a larger engine would defeat the reason I like it -light weight.

      If you are unable to get that motor going you can try throwing a briggs classic engine on it like the one in this video.

    I cracked my oil sump on the neck area. It's not too big of a crack, might just use a metal bonder to seal/bond the crack a bit.
    I used a pry bar and a mallet to take the fly wheel off.
    Might've been able to avoid the small crack if I evenly worked the pry bar around the flywheel.
    Luckily it wasn't the flywheel or top cover of the sump.
    found a used 2006 briggs and I'm using as a hobby project to learn how an engine works and hopefully cut some grass. 😁

    When replacing a bent crank on a mower engine, what are other components that could be damaged as well?

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  4 роки тому

      If the flywheel key didn’t break when it was bent possibly the connecting rod

    yeah the Briggs quantum. engines are nice but the classic is my favorite. i haven't used the new style engine they have but after some of the things I have seen and heard i have no interest in trying one i will stick to. my briggs classic engines until it quits

    Hi, how would you recommend removing the sump/crankcase cover. I removed the crankshaft seal but I cant slide the cover off. I have beaten it with a hammer and everything.
    Thanks

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  4 роки тому

      Is the shaft covered in caked on dirt? I have had to take angle grinders to them with wire wheels to get all the years of stuff off then they always come off pretty easy

    • @maxwellpatane6752
      @maxwellpatane6752 4 роки тому

      @@hanksgarage_ Its pretty clean, I think maybe the crank is bent or something because when I turn it, the sump turns with it. Almost as if the crank and cover are welded together.
