Keep in mind, I missed this during rebuild of a 1980 3.5hp Briggs vertical shaft, the crankcase gasket, there are two for this engine, this one needed the .015. I could barely pull the engine through, broke in all back down miked everything put it back together and still was so stiff, I did get it to start. but pulling it through was just too hard to do and I knew there was something else that needed my attention. The dealer had sold me a .005. I didn't give it a second thought, until I remembered reading about the two different thicknesses. What a difference a few thousands of an inch make. Great channel.
This video, and another I found specific for a 196 CC Honda clone, really helped me swap out a 5/8" shaft to a 3/4" for the addition of a torque converter on my minibike. Thanks!
Wow, excellent job my friend!! One of the most informative, concise videos I have ever seen. I wish you could help me with 1 year old Briggs and Stratton with a bent (I think) Crankshaft. I found out you can not cut a 3/4" reinforcing rod with a Lawnmower. LOL!! It was hidden below some weeds I was trimming. Should have used the weed wacker, now I know that. I did replace the Flywheel keyway and the Blade, now it starts. It runs fairly well at full speed but at idle it vibrates like crazy. Oh well, you live and learn.
Awesome video i had a 1965 briggs with a plane crank shaft the was damaged like someone tryed to grind it an make it a 5/8ths shaft an hammered on a 5/8ths shaft an bent the crank i had already threw the block in the recycle bin when i found this video the cylinder walls looked new an the valves looked like they had never been ran more then a hour so i got some other engine with the intake ceased an took out a double sided bearing pto side crank that was on a newer engine style an put it on the old 1965 block i used the newer style head an all the hardwear because the old bolts where flatheads bolts an they never tighten good the rip cord side was a short shaft so i used a new cup an new started the engine loooks cool an i saved the original engine to my classic minibike👍 🎉
I enjoyed watching you change out the crankshafts on the two engines and believe that I could do that. I need to figure out how to get my power generator going which have not been started in many years. It never was used since I had problems with it since buying it, and installing the oil in it. The newest one worked fine, but I never used it since our power never stayed off long, when we lost electricity.
Was in a hurry one day putting new rings in a Briggs and didn't emery the crankshaft before reinstalling the sump! I thought how bad can it leak? It didn't leak much, just enough to run down on the drive plate on a Snapper rider! Had to stop cutting and clean the plate every 20 min from then on! Live and learn!!
I have a spare engine, but the machine needs the end of the crank to be tapped and threaded. Can I do that to it? Have you tapped the end of a crankshaft so you could add a center nut?
Welp. Now I know how to do my vertical shaft 8hp B&S. Thank God it's easier than I thought. The things I do to restore an old mower keeping as much original as possible...
On the engine you were running at the end (the five hp b and s) I am currently working on one and wondering if you could make a video on how the governor linkages are set up on this particular engine because I have done research and cannot find a diagram for the engine
dony have 18hp briggs opposed twin mower can run it for any amount of time bu t as you shut it off you cannot start till next day looses spark when hot tried 3 coils 2 key and flywheels isolated kill wire with no luck please any ideas its a single coil thanks
@donyboy73 , Is swapping a sump cover from another engine ever a problem due to the block being line bored for the crankshaft during manufacturing, thus pairing the engine block with it's own specific sump cover? Also, any need to check crank endplay after that swap?
An engine I'm tinkering with now has the ball bearing arrangement on it. I notice a tiny bit of play in the ball bearing so ideally I would like to replace it. Though I have no clue how to get it off. Any advice??
Learned a lot here Thanks Can a single shaft be converted to a dual shaft? I have to convert a Briggs for my tiller. I have 2 engines single shaft functional and donor engine with hole in block. Can this be done? Thanks
hi donyboy, i have a question for you about a small engine briggs and stratton sn 128m02/0134f1 the engine was blown, prob was the connecting rod. i did replaced it with the right match, however when i tighten the bolt ,100inch lbs and tried to spin the crank shaft it won't turn at all.
I need help my simplicity coronet 12 hydro will only crank over when I cross the two solonoid terminals. And when it does start the only way to stop the engine is to cover the intake. Neither the solonoid or the pro clutch clicks.no short wires or bad connections.i checked the battery , solonoid and the brake safety switch please help
What size impact driver do you recommend for small engine work. There are so many of them out there it's really confusing. I know you require special sockets with an impact wrench. I would prefer something battery driven or electric rather than an air tool. My use is for my own equipment, no commercial work. So basically it would be used on lawnmowers, my riding mower and generator. Thanks Dony, appreciate your help!
Hi Donyboy or any other master mind reading this. I have a Tecumseh HH60 engine with a broken crankshaft: 31856A does anyone know if i can swap it with any other crank and a simple solution like a sleeve to make it work again.
donyboy73 reason I ask is they say you use certain gasket sizes to obtain crankshaft endplay clearances which can start at .002. you would add thicker or thinner or double a certain size. I do love the learning experience from you, I've learned alot, I don't know how you do it - work, make videos and reply to your fans. amazing!
Hi Donyboy, Always enjoy your superb videos. Just an FYI, I took a keyed crankshaft from an 8hp Tecumseh snowblower (that had a broken rod and cracks in the block) and put it into a 10hp Tecumseh wood chipper engine that had a tapered crankshaft. I checked all the specs with my micrometer and everything was exactly the same. The only difference, other than the crankshaft end, between the two engines was the piston bore. I used my "new" snowblower with it's 10hp engine for 3 hours after a big snowstorm and it worked just fine.
I'm glad to see Dony is a real mechanic now. Real mechanics don't need to wear gloves to keep from messing up their manicure. So now what do I call you. Oh, must be Don. All joking aside, that was one fine job, Don. You are the best. Thanks, rev don
HEY Donny I have a 11hp Tecumseh engine with a tapered crankshaft that I want to change to straight. Are there any engine that have a straight crank will fit? I have been looking online but can't find any.
Hey man, I need a crank for a 7hp Briggs. I can't seem to find much on 7hp. 6hp and 8hp. But not much about the 7hp. Can I use a crank from anything else? Thanks
Hey man have you ever heard of a power chief 5hp briggs? It's green 1976? Has alot of tags and details on it awesome looking engine it has the weird crankshaft was wondering of 1993 one would work from a 5hp?
Guess I will pull the bent crankshaft on my Honda mower. I was going to try and get it straightened but for the price, Its just as easy for me to Replace instead of messing with a bent shaft.
I have a 14.50 briggs with a bad block. It may can be bored out. I don’t know anybody around where I live that will bore a small engine. My bad briggs is Model 204312 Type 0529B1 OHV. What block can I use to swap shafts? The motor is for a chipper. It has a big tapered shaft like in your video. Can you help me find a block I can use to swap the shaft?
I have a 7hp horizontal taper shaft Briggs & Stratton engine and I'll like to swap its crankshaft with one with a keyway. I looked for parts but they are very expensive so I decided to look for another engine and to take the crankshaft from. The problem is that I can only find vertical shaft engines. So my question is: will that crankshaft fit if they're both Briggs & Stratton engines 7hp ?
Hi Dony, do I have to reset my points after I swap them crankshafts? I swapped same ones and I got no spark but one time I feel there is a current going from magneto one time I feel nothing, do you know what may be the issue?
Well done and even though there is no crankshaft swap in my future, I watched the video anyway just because I like the way you do them.
Keep in mind, I missed this during rebuild of a 1980 3.5hp Briggs vertical shaft, the crankcase gasket, there are two for this engine, this one needed the .015. Using the air tool to loosen the flywheel was a valuable tip. I always learn something from these videos. Thanks for posting them.
Air hammer tip is great, it has so many uses we tend to forget, great!
It won't be long and you'll be in the 100K club Donny! Congratulations on your channels success! Also, great video as always! Cheers!! Zip~
thanks
EXCELLENT VIDEO. One of the best detailed videos I've seen for removal and replacement of crank shaft. Thanks. I think I can do it now!
Three excellent skills; mechanical excellence, video presentation excellence, and teaching excellence. Thanks.
Very helpful step-by-step instructions. Original engine with old style starter clutch and all metal parts was nice to see.
This video, and another I found specific for a 196 CC Honda clone, really helped me swap out a 5/8" shaft to a 3/4" for the addition of a torque converter on my minibike. Thanks!
Hi, thank you for a very informative video and very helpful for me as a layperson.
Thank you for this great video. I especially appreciated the efficient presentation and concise editing. Well done!

I usually do not end up repairing bent cranks
I haven't seen you in awhile, nice to see your videos are still up, nice job.

Don..you are awesome. You are a life saver. Thanks for your videos..
I love the videos very cool learning how these work!
Excellent video! Left absolutely no questions! Perfect and thank you.
Thanks you so much for putting these videos up. I successfully rebuild a honda gx 160 thanks to some of your vids. By the way I am from AUS.
Excellent video as always dony

What was the trok setting for the pull start side crank nut thanks
I have a question about a Kohler engine would it hurt the crankshaft if you cut the pulley side off
Hii, can i know whether i can attach heavier flywheel weight more than the small engine into the output shaft of that small engine?
Hello. Craftsman engine model 20M314 what torque on the crankshaft cover swamps?
Well timed video. I'm just about to swap out crankshafts from two similar Briggs and Stratton Motors. Thank you sir.
excellent video, great photography & edits. Sometimes it may be better to search for a used engine with the right crankshaft. Thanks
Excellent video 👍

Nice walk-through Don - video is HQ in content. Great weekend to all.
Excellent video! I am working on a motor with bearings on the crankshaft and I was wondering how to match up the timing marks
Well done Don. The video was very well made.
Do you remeber what the torque setting is for the flywheel nut? Thanks! Great video, very helpful!
Very nice and helpful video. I had to replace my crankshaft in the same motor as that one, but crankshaft was slightly different. Thanks Dony:)
Is it possible to re-thread the grooves on a crank shaft where a lawnmower blade bolt goes?
yes sometimes I run a tap or a thread chaser to clean them up
Excelent video very useful
I have a spare engine, but the machine needs the end of the crank to be tapped and threaded. Can I do that to it? Have you tapped the end of a crankshaft so you could add a center nut?
yes you can if there is room
@@donyboy73 Cool, thanks.
This taught me so much thank you!
Enjoyed this great video and, as always, learned some excellent tips. Thanks

Good job brother 👍
Can these bolts on the sump cover be different on a different motor because mine are 7/16
I have the same situation with a Honda Gx390. It has a long taper and I want to replace it with a keyway shaft. Do you think it will fit
?
Nice one Dony. 👍👍
I have a briggs push mower that sits way too high in the deck.. is there any way to lengthen the crankshaft ?
On the engine you were running at the end (the five hp b and s) I am currently working on one and wondering if you could make a video on how the governor linkages are set up on this particular engine because I have done research and cannot find a diagram for the engine

hi dony boy I have a problem with a sthil back pack when I try to starter the cord pull back very hard with a little explosion what I can do ?
do you think you should torque twice? in my experience the bolt always moves a little tighter the second time.
How universal are engine parts from year to year? Where do you get your parts for older / newer engines?
An engine I'm tinkering with now has the ball bearing arrangement on it. I notice a tiny bit of play in the ball bearing so ideally I would like to replace it. Though I have no clue how to get it off. Any advice??
I know your application didn't need the bearing but if you did need it, how do you remove the crankshaft bearing ?
Learned a lot here Thanks Can a single shaft be converted to a dual shaft? I have to convert a Briggs for my tiller. I have 2 engines single shaft functional and donor engine with hole in block. Can this be done?
Thanks
if you have appropriate crankshaft and camshaft from another engine , yes
hi donyboy, i have a question for you about a small engine briggs and stratton sn 128m02/0134f1
the engine was blown, prob was the connecting rod. i did replaced it with the right match, however when i tighten the bolt ,100inch lbs and tried to spin the crank shaft it won't turn at all.
what the torque spec on the flywheel end for a 190cc B/S engine please
I need to do this to my pressure washer, will it be about the same way as you did here?
I have a crankshaft that is too long for my application. Is it all right to cut it off to fit it?
Did you put new crankshaft bearings and seals or reuse old?
reused old

just to point out does that double application of rtv with gasket affect endplay?
no

Very helpful video thanks.
Is there an adaptation to convert straight to taper shaft?
Hi Donyboy, Always enjoy your superb videos. Just an FYI, I took a keyed crankshaft from an 8hp Tecumseh snowblower (that had a broken rod and cracks in the block) and put it into a 10hp Tecumseh wood chipper engine that had a tapered crankshaft. Just curious, what was wrong with the other engine that necessitated having to do this? Thank for sharing.
What about the end play measurements on the crankshaft?
HEY Donny I have a 11hp Tecumseh engine with a tapered crankshaft that I want to change to straight. Are there any engine that have a straight crank will fit? I have been looking online but can't find any.
I would like to know about Murray riding lawn mower transmission model 30540x98b
Ok. I have a Honda GX270 9hp small engine that has a short crankshaft. What can I do to extend the shaft please?
Excellent video as always, 👍
How do you find the torque specs?
Good ol Briggs, so simple and reliiable
Nicely done
great video Donny. thanks for posting!
And keep up with the good videos very good and helpful
Glad you like them!
Hey man, I need a crank for a 7hp Briggs. I can't seem to find much on 7hp. 6hp and 8hp. But not much about the 7hp. Can I use a crank from anything else? Thanks

great video , like to see more of these repairs.
Very informative and well done, thanks!
Great video! Love the way you walk through everything. What is your parts washer, and what do you reccomend for someone who would be looking?
They make a sleeve you can put over the crankshaft. I don't know how well they work though.
Nice job.
I have a motor like this but I can not find parts any help
hey whats the part number for the original crankshaft ?
thanks! donyboy, !! from now on, I will only use higher octane on my lawnmower :-)
you're boss man !! :-)
How much torque did you apply to the flywheel?
Sweet you did video on the rewind on new one?

USUALLY NOT BUT YOU SHOULD CHECK THEM ANYWAY. SOMETimes running a 400 grit emery paper between them helps
