- Mudvayne recently returned from an 11 year hiatus and frontman Chad Gray talks about what happened over a decade ago, what it feels like to be back and being embraced by the new generation of fans that fell in love with them through places like TikTok. Chad was also the singer for the metal supergroup HELLYEAH, which featured late Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul so we of course get into his thoughts about the remaining members of Pantera being out on the road touring without the Dimebag and Vinnie who have both sadly passed away. We talk about the importance of playing live, possible new mudvayne music and picks his bet for the Mike Tyson Logan vs. Paul fight.

Man, I remember 1999-2000 when Mudvayne and Slipknot first exploded, and I preferred LD.50 over the Slipknot self-titled. I was 17 years old, and heard Slipknot first....and I LOVED it. But LD.50 was a different animal. Still rock them both.
Same here. LD 50 was so good that I still consider Mudvayne better than slipknot even though slipknot has written way more awesome songs compared to Mudvayne. That one album is like the Mike Tyson of metal albums to me.

@meyeraliyeh5724 I saw them at Ozzfest 2001 in St Louis. They were brutal! Slipknot also kicked ass, but I was slightly more excited to see Mudvayne.
L. D. 50 is a masterpiece! Much more complex and unique then Slipknot's any album) But I love both bands, of course

I’m in my early 40’s and saw Mudvayne in the height of their career in the 2000’s. Same goes with their peers Korn, Slipknot etc. now my daughter is 12 and is in to the same bands and wants to see them live!!! Which is amazing for me to see!
I hate where the music industry has gone. Forcing my favorite bands to just write one song at a time. Also, knowing where Chad’s head is at with what his favorite Mudvayne material is disheartening because now i know the new Mudvayne stuff won’t be what i was hoping for. LD 50 is objectively a masterpiece. Even the mix. The fact that their writing process was ideas thrown together is what made their sound soooo cool. The more polished they became in their song writing, the less interesting their songs became to me. I love all their records , I really do. But nothing they did comes close to LD 50.
It's too fast and easy ( with the right fanbase and marketing) to make money song by song. Respect to the musicians who still make cohesive lp and ep projects.
I absolutely love mudvayne probably my all time fave, but I can say i have never listen to a single track after lost and found ( which was honestly not great as it is) I’ve briefly listened to tracks like the new game but couldn’t make it thru 20 seconds it seems like ld50 was so amazing but the end of all things to come couldn’t replicate that sound- however- it was still AH-MA-ZING I really love that second album so much. The beginning of all things to end was also great, even kill, i outta was sweet. But lost and found was so commercial and a little bit too “safe” i guess but everything after that sounds the same. So weird.
@@vcall6121I more or less agree but do think there are some bangers on New Game. my favorites are Dull Boy, Same Ol, and Do What You Do. that said their 09 album didn't do anything for me, except the song I Can't Wait, which I'd argue is their heaviest song

Chad was original founder of Hellyea. He and Vinnie Paul created Hell Yea. Guess what Mudvane guitar was one of them also lol.

Cold White Christ! I remember listening to a demo of what you guys were working on with Tom and Tommy on Nothingface's bus back in '03. I was so looking forward to that project, hope it comes to light!

Chad, there are a lot of us Pantera fans that did follow VP over to the Damageplan and Hellyeah team. I loved anything that Dime and VP did. I have seen Hellyeah about 6 or 7 times, and love pretty much everything you guys turned out. I also went to the NH show of Pantera in 2023. I am still a HUGE Pantera fan, and I never got to see them in the 90's for one reason or another, so this was my only chance to hear their music live and I'm glad I did. Do I wish it was the original lineup, YES... but it was a great time and they sounded great, and like you said... it was like I was 18 years old again!
I really hope Chad will listen to the fans when writing the new material. There is a reason we all love LD50 and why it sold so many copies and we always want to hear songs from that album at their shows. I hope they will look to that album when trying to recreate what makes Mudvayne awesome.
This interview was amazing at 11:56 , hell yeah, was the first metal show I ever went to at the age of 14 and I was hooked from there I play in the band it’s wild man he’s truly an inspiration dude even if I don’t necessarily listen to their music all the time the impact at him and figures like Vinny Paul had on me, and that first initial experience spearheaded me into what I love to do now I’m 23 now

LD.50 was the album that got me hooked on Mudvayne!!!!!! I was hoping for years they would get back together! One thing that was soooooo rad was when they was on a late night show and played the song “Dig” and Chads scream on that tv screen was so f’nnnnnnnn RAD!!!!!! You gotta see that!

Got to see Hellyeah , Lamb of God and In Flames once at a small theater and Chad was ball's to the wall for the entire show , he was bouncing all over the place. It was a killer show with high energy for the entire show....
man these are the stories im glad to hear chad telling, the stuff like hellyeah doing only rehearsal and it was in vinnys bedroom in vegas, its the shit you dont hear every day and its all these little stories that are so important to keep the boys spirits alive and well!

This was a great interview, you did a good job getting in and out with talking on LD50 and new music without pounding Chad with it to much, I wish they wouldn’t be over thinking what direction they want to go, it’s metal music, you don’t over think it, you just jam and create with your band, I wish also he would just focus on Mudvayne, we wouldn’t probably even know who Chad is if it wasn’t for Mudvayne, as a bass player who considers Ryan my favorite bass player I know that’s where Ryan wants to be, and it’s where his Fans want to see him,

Hey my Brother this is a great interview. So I toured in early 2000’s. Motograter OZZfest in 2003. I live 2 miles from Jonathan Davis. But Mudvayne was my favorite. I’m trying to get some new things happening

Interesting talk on albums vs singles towards the end there. I can't help but disagree with some of it though, there was a sense of discovery when it came to listening to a new album. You might've heard the singles which were good for the masses and getting your name out there, but the deep tracks are what made the listening experience special to me. Plus, having more tracks leads to more expression from the artists, you can explore different sounds and themes. Albums just lend themselves to being more personalized and special to me and I'm sad to hear Chad leaning away from that. Granted, he's done his time and made those special albums, it's just a tradition I'd like to hold on to. Great talk though 🤘

i was at one of their Slipknot tours in @99 or 2000. The lineup was Mudvayne, Disturbed, Linkin Park and then Slipknot.
Was a great show. People that had pre purchased tickets had to wait in a 2 hour long line and many missed Mudvayne. I didn't have a ticket. So, I walked right up, bought one and walked right in and avoided that line. It was a great concert.

I think a Damage Plan reunion would be amazing. One tour with guest guitarists and drummers playing. New Found Power was an Amazing album. Thank God for Muvaynes return.

I had mudvayne tickets but they were playing with disturbed. The singer David said it was too cold to play and they canceled the show. Never had another chance I was 16 and I’m 37 now

My only paid video watching platform is UA-cam, And I use it primarily for music while at work. While at home and any down time i miraculously have, I typically do interviews such as this one. But I'm mostly listening as opposed to watching. However, this interview I literally sat down through the whole thing and watched it because this is my second interview with Chad Gray, the first one being with Rockfeed as he was putting his makeup on right before a show (which by the way was really cool of him to do) and on a no homo level, I love this dude, man. He's just like the rest of us metal heads out here grinding and trying to get through this bullshit thing we call life. He speaks like us he thinks like us and he even curses like us. What's not the love about this guy? And lets not forget about that unique set of chops he is blessed with. I cant get enough of that gutteral cacophony that i wish i could produce even a fraction of! Sir Jesea, i just met you tonight, and not only am i becoming a new subscriber, I'm placing u in the small amount channels i have that audibly notify me of new content. Chad my dude L.D. 50 is the mudvayne sound through each album after L.D.50 that sound became less and less not saying they are bad albums. My favorite still being, The End Of All Things To Come which was my first record which i listened and grew up with. So when i finally came around to listen to L.D.50 i was blown away by the sheer awesomeness of this record i would categorize it as Progressive Nu Metal .To me L.D 50 Sounded more mudvayne than the rest of the albums that came after Anyway i can't wait for the new material which i'm pretty stoked for.
Mudvayne was one of the first few metal bands i cut my teeth to. Metallica was the very first. But the summer before my Freshman year, 2001, i was 14 staying a couple weeks at my grandmas, very close with her, just like chad was with his, late night mtv2 when it was still good, saw 3 music videos back to back to back. Slipknots Left Behind, Mudvaynes Dig, and Korns ADIDAS. From then on, i was addicted. Still am. Long Live the Vayne! 🤘
I also think Zack and Charlie would blow your mind on a tribute album. I digress.

Having seen Pantera a couple times back in the day towards their end, it’s hard to watch Phil move around the way he does, the scream isn’t as brutal due to age and time, and knowing how VP felt about it regardless if he’s right or not, they probably should’ve just have done a couple shows and called it good. It is awesome to see Mudvayne doing their thing again and can’t wait to see how heavy the new shit will be.

Sad to hear that they are going to only put out one or two songs at a time. I know I'm a Gen X'er but I hate hearing one song. I like it when an album comes out. Same way that we digest series on Netflix or whatever. Put out a season and let us binge watch it. I want to binge listen! If the song is great, I want to hear more song after song.
This is so bad ass you did this my very first concert was the merry mayhem tour in 99 at the hscb arena in Buffalo with Ozzy rob zombie soil and of course mudvayne me and my buddy have chad and gregs autograph on a dollar bill we stayed at the same hotel as them and just so happened to eat at the same time in the restaurant no one else recognized them because they didn't have the paint on so me and my buddy made our move and all we had was the dollar bill to sign those two even back then were chill as fuck about it just good dudes making bad ass music

The entire "Pantera" show is literally pretty much paying homage to Dime and Vinnie. It's almost like they are there. The Abbott estate gave Phil and Rex the green light. It is what it is. I never thought it would happen. But I'm excited to see it and celebrate the band, the music, and the brothers. It's being done with integrity. Definitely doing new music and calling it Pantera should not even be considered. I could see maybe the tour continues for maybe another year or so. Then shut it down. Before it loses it's shine.
Feel like a lot of bands use member's deaths to make money. Slipknot using Joey, Pantera is using Abbott brothers, and Static-x is using Wayne Static fast cash when you don't have to start over

I never got to see Pantera with Dime and Vinnie. I don’t want to see Pantera now. Those guys were a huge part of what made them sound like that. That’s my opinion on the matter. Don’t get me wrong Charlie and Zakk are amazing players but they’re not Vinnie and Dime.

Such a pity hearing him expressing himself like that about LD50, which indeed is the most appreciated and regarded album by the fans and the one that is actually keeping them coming back in the memory of the fans after this long hiatus. With all due respect, Chad, nobody cares about the washed off rock-pop song writing that you wanted with the latest albums, people wants the uniqueness you had, the unique blend of styles and techniques of 4 highly skilled individuals, really nobody wants another 'chevelle' sounding record and that is actually what your demise was back in the day, the further you were from LD50 the less memorable you become. From a hardcore fan who still praises LD50 as one of the best albums ever written in metal.
Sick New World is seriously lackin by not having Mudvayne and Limpbizkit two years running.
Vinnie was kinda selfish...he forgot he was 1/4 of Pantera. Pantera is Phil and Rex's band just ad much as it was the brother's. The tribute is great because it brings pantera to a new audience and keeps the legacy alive.

I noticed that Chad was very specific about saying Zakk and Charlies intentions were pure and never mentioned Phil and Rex's name once. It's obvious he agrees with the detractors that this is a cash grab in poor taste for those two.

It's understandable why
I still think people forget the Vince clearly had PTSD. a Pantera celebration show with Vince, Rex and Phil would have required Vinnie to hash things out with Philip. That would have meant digging up a past he was desperately trying to move on from. I suspect a large part of the reason Vince usually said what he said was simply to SHUT DOWN these constant questions week after week after week as they were simply inappropriate
I mean, if they recorded music under a new entity other than Pantera and maybe included some Tera covers as bonus tracks, that would be preferable to touring with the Pantera name. Pantera is not Pantera without the Abbott Brothers.

@@integrity101 I think they should re-record like 20 classic Pantera songs and release it as a Tribute CD for the Abbott brothers. A portion of the money they make should go to the Abbott family as well. I mean it makes sense, those guys are the ones who wrote a majority of the music.
I heard, watched and met Slipknot before I even heard Mudvayne and now I don’t even listen to slipknot anymore, I stopped listening at Iowa. From first listen, Mudvayne was way better for me and have been my number one band since. I would love any new music and defo love a new album, not so much a fan of a song here and a song there. Also why is The New Game not on spotify, any Ideas? It’s a great album.
I saw Hellyeah YEARS ago in Atlanta at a festival that I believe Slayer was headlining, and when Vinnie walked onto the stage the whole crowd just erupted. Not one note played yet but the crowd was cheering already ... that's the respect the metal community had, and still does, for his music. That said, I really don't agree with the assessment of the albums. The End of All Things the Come is flawless. Mercy/Severity is a masterpiece.

Man I’m pretty disappointed on Chad’s outlook on ld.50 it’s hands down their best work I can see how the mixing would be considered weird but the rawness and psyconess was unmatched. It’s weird how he thinks they were best on A New Game I think they completely lost their touch on those last two albums. SAD TO SEE BUT STILL HYPED FOR NEW MUSIC
Got see Pantera in dallas back in the day 96 and 01, got to see Hellyeah in Corpus Christi in 07 shortly after their release… man first time seeing Chad and Greg live, haven’t seen Mudvayne yet.
So yea IMO Phil and Rex doing the tribute shows is cool, i won’t go to see it.
It better just stay as that, other than tue Live Album they want to put out is whatever, but They better not Try and Put out a new album.

I never stopped listening to mudvayne. For some reason the one album I jam the most especially while I run is the new game. I never got into hell yeah, I tried, even bought the first 3 CDs. Some good songs but overall not for me.
In terms of missing a generation , A couple of BRR BRR DENG memes go a LOOONG way lol
I'm sorry but Pantera is obviously not done. Sold out show after sold out show. Post glam Pantera is some of the best metal EVER made, and if Vinnie wanted to hold that back from a whole new generation of kids so that he could put hell yeah out there, that's fucked up. Period.

I'm glad Chad has stayed clean and healthy and got back on stage but honestly I think he sounds better in hellya because he was being him self. Mudvain I don't like the kind of music because he's not being himself and he's not relaxed and letting it spit he's to much of a robot in Mudvain
At the amphitheaters he sings so fast it just sounds like mumbling the whole time
Unpopular fan-opinion but I think from an objective perspective,that Chad is actually (partially) right. The New Game was a better written album than LD50 which is actually my least favorite Mudvayne Album. Many singular ideas that were combined on LD50 stood out for themselves compared to the later albums but they're completely missing a common threat. Like somethings that binds them together in a natural way. However, I disagree with Chad on the the take that The New Game was their BEST album. It was mature but was therefore lacking creativity. The perfect mixture of both in my opinion was The End of All Things to Come.
Read between the lines: Laziness has kicked in for one or two of the members. I can't figure out if its Greg or Chad. They don't even jam anymore....what the fuck is that? Where's the writing sessions-whether its a week together or a month at a time. Looking at other interviews , the culmination of all that....I have determined that for the most part they'll play out their catalogue and die. The will for getting together and just spilling their guts to write...isn't there. Such a waste of talent. Like what else are they going to do with their life.....fuck man just write. Can you imagine what the four of them could come up with..After i heard him say they were file sharing, i knew it was over. Getting together once every few months isn't a band.
Notice how he doesn’t mention Phil in who has love for. I’m sure Vinnie convinced him Phil was this evil guy. Some psychopath killed Dime not Phil. Phil had his issues sure but to try and make a connection to dimes murder is insane
What you're forgetting is that the December issue of metal hammer had articles where Phil said dimebag deserves to be beaten severely. The he gets killed by a bloke screaming you broke up pantera before he gets shot. Do you blame Vinnie for thinking that ? It could have provoked this nut job to do what he did, not Phil's fault but it's very likely it may of provoked it.

I’ve seen all the video footage and I was obsessed w finding out why and watched every interview and documentary, Nathan Gale was a psychopath who tried to go to a down and super joint show as well so he wanted to kill anyone in the band cuz he thought Pantera was stealing his songs and reading his mind or some shit. I get why Vinnie would be like that but its still insane to think it’s Phil’s fault

I'll take the word of people that were actually at the show and witnessed it opposed to someone who wasn't any day of the week. I've been a dimebag fanatic for the last 20 years man, I've watched probably every video known to man in regards to pantera and dimebags death, I just tried looking for the news clip where a bloke that was interviewed said that but I can't find it but I will keep looking for it and post it when I do.
