I'm from the islands St Helena island this is our specialty on the island we go to the fields and get our fresh okra and my grandfather would go in the boat and get the shrimp so had this meal at least 3 times a week my kids love it eveyone on the island love this dish
I loved okra with shrimp especially when it just steam and still green in color. I like the way you explain the way you cooking your dishes very simple just keep cooking for us.
You have been making my day. I have set a goal to lose 50 lbs in three months by biking, going to the gym and eating fresh good food. I have dropped 20 lbs in 5 weeks and you helped. I have been cooking your wonderful dishes for my wife and I. This dish with a fresh salad makes for a beautiful dinner with some wine. The other good thing is that my wife is trimming down as she has to eat what I make. She works and I am retired. I was a mess daddy in the US Army, 28 years and I know how to cook.
Hey Chris, I will definitely try with some sada roti. My mom use to always do fry okra but never with meat..lol cannot wait to try..thank you for sharing
Yes Chris...mouth watering, we like to use the dried shrimp too (the really small ones Have you ever tried those? They add a nice salty taste to the dish. Also, to prevent the okra from getting slimy we put it in the sun for a bit, it's best to spread it out on a pan.
I am learning to cook from your videos :) I've never been good in the kitchen but started to do my own cooking lately and I find your recipes so easy and you are so fun to watch as well, so thank you for the wonderful videos, keep them coming!
Yes girl I'm from the low country but move to Columbia. My mom and grand-mom did it that way but I added my own spin to it since I don't eat pork anymore lol.
Best to fry shrimp first for no more than 2 minutes, then add last to ochroes. Best not to cover pot while cooking, to prevent steaming. Hope my useful tips helps you, all the best.😊
Okra bring so many memories of my childhood. Love this recipe though. it looks delicious Chris. I can’t wait to taste it. One thing thou that I would like to share with you is that in our Island we put some lemon or lime juice to prevent it from getting slimy.
After cutting my okro i tend to leave in the sun air out to dry in that way when cooking it there no slime. Also i like to add tomatoes and carrot in it and squeeze lime juice in it not alot... nice vid Chris
Thanks for taking the time to leave me your comment... always appreciated. Since you lost some weight, would you like some of mine? I've been trying to get as active as I can as well. Do keep in touch.
Hi Chris, was curious to know if frozen okra will work just the same? Looking at the advice below, I'm considering drying out the frozen okra before cooking.
Since I was a Kid, my Mother always Cooked Okra Soup. She/I are from Suriname, South America, I have tried many times to Copy her recipe, But for some reason, She makes it way Better. Can you try or make Okra Soup.
My wife and I is what I cook for and I cut you portions down to half and make a salad. The portions are the key and the salads are thing to fill up on. I do 3 to 4 lbs a month and I exercise for one hour a day or every other day. I is hard to shed the weight but it took 6 years to put it on. 20 down and 30 to go.
From New Orleans first use bacon grease second put okra first fry it slowly adding 1 cap of vinegar.Fry it until slime goes away. Add smoke sausage or ham or turkey sausage sauteed veggies shrimp last and fourth of cup of water salt pepper seasonal garlic powder onion powder
I love it but I cooked it differently. I fried the okra first with a little bit of oil, chilli, and onion. I put it away then used the same frying pan to fry the shrimp with all other ingredients here. After the shrimp cooked, i added the okra.
Tried it your way but I used all the oil spices and herbs to marinade the shrimp about an hour and half beforehand. After the okra was done I cooked the shrimp and finally threw the okra back in. It was fantastic! Thank you both for the inspiration!
The origin of this as a Guyanese dish is from Chinese cooking in Guyana. Adding Oyster sauce to the dish just at the end and a small portion of white rice returns the dish to its origins in China.
Thank you for such a mouthwatering recipe. I'm an OKRA and Seafood Lover! I'm definitely going to try this recipe. Thanks!

Okra and shrimp, what's not to like. Looks very good. I will give it a try, but I have to hold off on the early entry of the shrimp.
Amazing recipe ! I love the use of shrimp and okra in this one. I"ll try it for sure .Thanks for sharing .👍

Adding a teaspoon of vinegar to the okra and then cover and cook will reduce the slime.
I thought of this to go with some pumpkin talkari and roti.

ocra is one of my favorite ,I will try this recipe, thanks chris
I going to add the shrimp last, after the okra is cooked down a little. I love okra!!
I am with you. Putting the shrimp early would make it rubber hard
Good idea. I briefly fry it first then add last too, so not to eat rubber 🍤.
Can't wait to try this, I love okra!
Man your recipes are mouthwatering
🍤 I love prawns with okra,
Just made a similar recipe too but curry version.
I’ll try the fry one next time.
Thank you.
Lovely:) keep up the good work the best caribbean food ever
In the south (SC, specifically) we use bacon grease, fry the okra first and add the shrimp last...And yes, we overcook it!
Yes girl I'm from the low country but move to Columbia. My mom and grand-mom did it that way but I added my own spin to it since I don't eat pork anymore lol.

Have you every had that with corn and stewed tomatoes?Have you ever tried fried okra fried with cornmeal batter?
wanna try this soon
I usually eat that with rice
As a Ghanaian 🇬🇭🇬🇭 we live for the draw (slime) of okra. But I will try this with banku( fermented cornmeal)
Wow.. wouldn't you believe I ate fried ochro and toast with some ginger tea for breakfast
I must try!
What do u eat the fry okro with????
Hi what brand of curry powder you use 🇭🇹❤️
Dis mi love baadddddddd! #Respect Chris
Delicious
Can I add callaloo to this?
The origin of this as a Guyanese dish is from Chinese cooking in Guyana. Adding Oyster sauce to the dish just at the end and a small portion of white rice returns the dish to its origins in China.
love this
Guyanese here 🙌🏾
I like this with saltfish or dry shrimp.
Hi Chris. Looks great. Okra is my favorite vegie. Was the okra still slimy after you finished cooking?
Chris what if you can't find okra or it is not in season can you use a frozen okra as
a substitute?
yes you can use frozen ones
Nancy peters I will try it
POWERFUL OKRA LOVE IT SHRIMP 💯 CHRIS ♥️🖤💚 BROWN FAMILY DAPHNE COTTON ALWAYS 💜 AWESOME🦋 WOW BEAUTIFUL.
Good One
Congrats JimFariello.
Ya I agree with some of the other comments I add my shrimp last, otherwise the shrimp is over cooked
try putting a dish towel under your cutting board so it doesn't slide
Why not put the shrimp in when the ochroes are halfway through ?
Also i like to dry out my okra first.
Are you a chef or just a man who loves to cook ?
If you add a some viniger about 2 tablespoon to any fried okra dish you'll lose the slim...my wife is Guyanese that's one of her tricks
Good Morning Chris can U please make a recipe for crab paule thanks
I watched this video after cooking this lol .
I wasn't sure I did it the right way
YUM
