For one of its (many) flaws, they need a different actor to play Thrawn. Anyone who's ever read the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn knows that Thrawn is supposed to be imposing and extremely intimidating (accentuated by his strategic brilliance), not look like a blue chess club nerd.

Even his voice performance didn't sound quite right (IMO) in Rebels. The big thing is that Thrawn WAS still physically imposing by the way Zahn (who created the character) described him. His calm, ruthless demeanor on top of that made him seem even more terrifying to those who personally encountered him.
Liev is the only choice. I'll be disappointed if they don't choose him. Crazy they are actually doing Abeloth! Great reason to see Luke and Ahsoka in action together.
I think Dave is just putting in things that look cool to him. Like how the big ship is called the eye of Sion in reference to the eye of Sauron, the fellowship of the rings reference at the end, and Ahsoka being called a Ronin even though samurai don't exist in this universe.

There’s a big difference between the significance of Ray Stevenson and Mark Hamill to Star Wars fandom. There are 50+ years of attachment to Luke (the primary antagonist of the foundation of the entire Star Wars universe) that creates infinitely more pressure to the idea of recasting him than a character no one had heard of a year ago. It’s not the same for you to switch your girlfriend after a year of dating than your father leaving your mother after decades of marriage. That said; I’m with you about Sebastian Stan. He has the look, the acting chops, and the fitness to play Luke at his prime, he just has to really channel Luke’s child-like purity and sense of wonder. And Mark Hamill’s already given the thumb’s up on that casting so I wish they would and just show us Luke’s adventures and building the academy. I think they’re afraid of blowing that story and won’t touch it, even if the actor factor weren’t part of the equation. Once you’ve explored the missing years of Luke, then the most important story that’s been left up to fans’ imagination - Luke at his peak and free to forge his destiny without the Empire- is used up and the mystery is gone. Instead I think they’re gonna use the Rey movie to essentially tell that story, fans are much less precious about her.

I'm not a big fan of expanding a franchise's universe because the writers are lazy or have run out of ideas. There's usually enough to mine within the existing universe that you don't have to invent entirely new realities. But in the case of this franchise, the Jedi vs. Sith theme seemed a bit played out and repetitive. It can't just continue to be Jedi beat Sith, Sith retreat, regroup and replot, and eventually beat Jedi, then Jedi retreat, regroup and replot, and eventually beat Sith, ad infinitum. Been there, done that. Plus, just because they're the best known force users in this universe and the only ones that casual viewers know about doesn't mean that they're the only or even most important ones. Nor is the whole all good vs. all evil theme that interesting or realistic. Something else has been needed for quite some time, to go beyond and contextualize this simplistic duality. Something that explains what the force is without resorting to pseudo-science and microscopic creatures, and expands the range of force users. So if that's what Ahsoka and the Acolyte are really all about, then good. There's got to be more to all this than Jedi vs. Sith, and both need to be shown to exhibit a rather limited understanding of the force and its uses. But it can't just be an even more evil group of force users than the Sith, whom a new groups of Jedi take on. That would be incredibly boring and just a repeat of what we've seen in a new guise. No more Palpatine or Sith more or less like him. He's too one-dimensional, like most of the Jedi. The new Jedi need to be wiser and more interesting than the old Jedi and be willing to expose themselves to all of the force and not just the "light" parts, to protect the galaxy against the threats out there that are worse than the Sith. And those villains have to be more complex than the Sith, themselves partaking of the light side of the force, which would make them so much more interesting. The new Jedi aren't pure virtue and the new villains aren't pure evil. That's what I think has to happen for Star Wars to continue and be relevant.

I think this second season will do justice to what we had here with this abomination series. I re watched season 1 here a few days ago and binged it. So many hints which gave me chills down my spine. Like Baylan saying something about the little ones at the jedi temple which got me thinking that he may of been that little boy at the jedi temple during order 66. Some other references too but this is what Star Wars is about right here.
