It has always bothered me that the R8 series didn't have some type of "eye" sensor. It makes it seem to be basically, a "blind" droid, that would have to remain mostly stationary. That would limit a lot of the functionality that astromech droids are well known for.

If I had a choice in the matter, I would go with an R2 unit. But a common saying for starfighter pilots was, "Any asrtomech is better than no astromech." I would be happy with any R series that could fit in a starfighter.
If I had to pick one and I didn't know anything about these units except what's on paper, I'd probably go for an r3 unit. That was the one who appealed to me most.
If I had to pick one, it would have to be the R2 series. The design is iconic and influence on the Star Wars series is massive. You can't help but to think of R2-D2 if you know about the series.
I would go for an R6. She would have a mix of colors, including evergreen, sand blue, medium azure, and magenta. Evergreen would be the base of the torso and legs. The torso/leg accents would be the sand blue. The head base is medium azure, with magenta would be the head accents. Her head would still be that of your average R6, but it would have an antenna attachment and a dish attachment. I would modify her to be able to hold 46 different hyperspace coords. She would also have a plasma torch arm, a buzzsaw arm, a scomp link (cuz every astromech needs one), and a grapling hook. The eye on her head would be modified to be hexagonal in shape. She would come equipped with those rocket boosters some astromechs have. She would have a tazer arm. She would be one of the less common female droids (don't know why they're so rare but they are). And her name would be R6-CD78.
The R4 would be my top choice, especially given that my pickup could use some repairs and body work, and all I'd need is an oil bath machine and a recharge station as "payment" for the little guy! 😁👍
If I had an R - series droid, it would be called R6-Y4. It would be gold, red, black, blue, and yellow. Gold head, red legs, yellow arms, blue body with a black stripe down the middle. To remind me of what happened to Darth Maul two times.
@@zufalllxnah, some R2 units got R(higher number) names based on their full serial number. I forget which Lucasfilm exec said that, but I think it was Leland Chee, back in like 2010 or so. The occurrences of anachronistic numbering in Clone Wars era droids (using number designation that seem decades before they canonically should exist) is not necessarily a continuity error. Using the Letter-Number pattern (the D2 in R2 D2) would only allow numbering of up to 260 units . For general sale, it is not such a big deal having a number of droids with the same name; during the Clone Wars, this would prove to be a huge problem for a military the size of the Galactic Republic. Using a yet (well into the future) undersigned model number would allow for more variety in droid names.
This is a fun video! Thanks! What is the source for this info, specifically the R-Series chart? Is it a visual dictionary? I understand you gleaned info from many sources but any info you have would help! Thanks!
Regarding the droids with R7 and R8 designations in the clone wars, I always thought that they named that way because the Republic had more R2 units than the naming system allowed for. With naming system being the droid model followed by two numbers or letters means there can only be about 1300 unique names for any given model. My guess is that the Republic just gave a lot of droids a different designation not used by an existing model. For example R7-A7 could still be an R2 and a droid like RG-G1could just be an R4 with a different name.
According to a Lucasfilm exec (I think it was Leland Chee, but don't quote me on that) the R2s, 3s, and 4s with R(higher number) designations got those numbers from their full serial number, as one might be R2-A7-P3 and it would be shortened to R7-P3 or something.
If I could only have one astromech (R-5 is an easy NO); I would go with a R-6. White body and head with red stripes. Default styled head. Jet thrusters modded onto the legs. Would be named Sureshot.
Watching these small drones attacking starfighters, and wondering why the Jedi are letting them destroy their droid companions, rather than force-pushing them off? I've seen them do tougher things with little issue, not sure why they didn't do this more often.
@@Cretaceous158 Possibly, but I don't know. It would definitely explain some situations, but I feel like even sterilized medical equipment can be, and possibly has been thrown before. But again, that would definitely make some interesting sense!

Roll 2 Dialogue 2 was a new hope's second filming. Roll 1 dialogue 1 was destroyed in a dark room film developing accident in 1977, by my dear friend who was working in Marin.
"The P2 series was the first droid build and marketed as an astromech"
T7 series: "What are we, chopped liver?"
R4-Q5 is probably a top pick for me just for the color scheme alone
I like the R5…because in the books, Red sabotaged its own motivator so R2 could come poste its mission…plus I’m cheap. Though the R6 is a snazzy replacement
Yeah, Red really was awesome for doing that. And thankfully, he didn't get turned into scrap, it's now canon that Mando purchased him!
"But hey; It wouldn't be Star Wars without continuity issues..."
That's how you know someone is a true Star Wars warrior 😂
It has always bothered me that the R8 series didn't have some type of "eye" sensor.
It makes it seem to be basically, a "blind" droid, that would have to remain mostly stationary.
That would limit a lot of the functionality that astromech droids are well known for.
I like the R2 series but I love the R7 triangular eye. My ideal one would be an R2 unit with an R7 dome.
I think you forgot the R0-Units. Also? I am already working on an R3-Unit, called “R3-MN7”, or “Minty”!
i believe the R0 was just a replacement style dome for other astromech. in reality it was an unfinished R6 droid used in the force awakens built by the r2 builder club in london. they used a lot of r2 builders club droids in the force awakens. correct me if im wrong though i might not be %100 but thats what ive heard
I think an R8 unit sounds right up my alley! I'd love to have that one!
The greatest R-series astromech droid ever built is none other than R2-D2! That little blue droid has been active for over 60 years!
The P2 series were 7.5ft tall, the R1 series were ~6.3 ft tall.
R4 fans stand up
Agrodroids represent.
Love their cone heads ngl
Plus you could have an R4D2 which just sounds like R42
i know how the r4 models could of been a success. make sub models for different roles, one that works in the bridges of starships, one that is more suited of maintinace in hangers or garages, and one for starfighters.
Great Video! I just learned so much more about Astromech Droids!
I think a cool video idea would be where you describe every single droid/astromech in all of starwars
Suggestion:every Rebel and separatist cruisers type and variants
12:35
If any of you know what’s happens to this poor droid in the clone wars… I’m so sorry. This droid met a BRUTAL end.
I love R2, but T3 will always be my fave astromech droid
In a Star Wars d20 game, I had an R6 unit that I adored.
I had an R4 to go along with my not-Kyle-Katarn farmer turned mercenary. R4-L9, or Liner. His crowning achievement was zapping Ysanne Isard in the ass, knocking her off a catwalk and allowing the team to successfully escape the ISB detention center they'd landed themselves in.
Man, SW d20 was fun.
@@passingrando6457 Starship stuff was pretty wonky but otherwise, I loved it. I still want to play a Hutt Jedi Guardian 1/Soldier 6/Jedi Guardian X with Hutt Power Armor either deep in the Old Republic or somewhere in the New Republic (the idea being the Hutt was called back by its family to fight a long war in the Outer Realms at the edge of Hutt Space and only was allowed to return to Republic to continue Jedi training after the war.) By which point the Hutt had gained a lot of sniper/armor training and (hopefully) acquired a set of ancient Battle Armor to work on getting fully working and such.
@@obrysii Oh boy, yeah, Hutts can be some impressive Guardians done right.
My favorite starship moment was when a player argued he shouldn't get dark side points for using force lightning, because he was using it for spot welds. I think he read about that one online and tried to use it.
@@passingrando6457 Ha, that's amazing. I could totally see that happening even in the group I had back in the day.
Cool Easter egg. The Droid in the E-Wing socket in Asohka has a head that was designed after the terribly inaccurate original Kenner R2-D2 action figure. So that head is now canon! Also, you need to add the R0 head from the sequels.
Make a R t10 to Rt34. The T stands for tank equipment concussion misseles, laser cannon. Plasma spraying cannons, plastic trapping net guns for police, and animal control use.
Astromech naming in the universe is so annoying, like Ashoka's R7 is an R2 ? did the Republic have prototypes in r2 casings?
I like to think the Jedi didn't like the looks and went for R2 looks
@@kojinaoftheinvertedeye810 yeah I'd like to think that too but lore wise I don't think R7's were made until after the battle of endor but I could be wrong. So my head cannon is that they're prototypes in R2 casings, but like u said they could have preferred the R2 casings
some other guy in the comment section said the R7 isn't an actualy R7 but it's just it's name, so it would be an R2 called R7 bla bla, probably something they thought up after the clone wars series to fix the continuity error
@@_Y.J Or maybe Filoni is just an idiot
They still have to canonize the rest of them.
Not all of them
That R1 that almost ended up in Luke hands, I wonder what amazing stories and adventures that Droid have been on since he's like many decades older than RT D2 ? It could have been on a massive high Republic battleship which Jedi did the Droid encounter? How many times was he almost blown to a million pieces !
Unfortunately for him, he lacked motivation.
...Something like I've written on my fanfiction; outter shell, internal frame and tools/accessories of an R2, the advanced sensors, memory banks and "brain" of an R3, and the hardware and software parts of a 3PO protocol droid necessary to enable multilingual capabilities...
Might I suggest an explanation of the C series astromechs?
If I had a choice in the matter, I would go with an R2 unit. But a common saying for starfighter pilots was, "Any asrtomech is better than no astromech."
I would be happy with any R series that could fit in a starfighter.
I’m just glad R5 finally got hit due.
I love Astro mech droids
I remember playing the lego game and freeplay mode would choose a random R Droid, not always R2
I like the Military R3 with a solid dome.
R2-D2 is my favorite Astromech so is Bb8
If I had an R - series droid, it would be called R6-Y4. It would be gold, red, black, blue, and yellow. Gold head, red legs, yellow arms, blue body with a black stripe down the middle. To remind me of what happened to Darth Maul two times.
What about the r0 astromech droid?
So did starfighters have astromech slots before the R2 series?
I went to Disney, and I built my own Astro Mac
Thats super cool I want to do it now
It was fun. I made an R4 Unit
I didn't know Apple existed in the Star Wars universe
I know what you mean but I couldn't pass up the opportunity
I'd have a classic R2 unit, named R3-G1, aka "Reggie"
Then you'd have an R3
@@zufalllxnah, some R2 units got R(higher number) names based on their full serial number. I forget which Lucasfilm exec said that, but I think it was Leland Chee, back in like 2010 or so.
Since you had droids named R6, R9, etc. during the clone wars, despite that none of those existed until the New Republic or even the Galactic Alliance era.
R2-D2 is just a class-model designator with very few characters, and millions of astromech droids, there has to be thousands or R2-D2’s out there. Amazing they never ran it o another one.
Is there a new edition coming for the essential guide to droids? I can see like two editions but seem to be older copies..
But the droid i'd like to have is the r8 and perhaps it choose what head it would want if it doesn't like his basic head.. colors i don't really mind as long as it's comfertable with it aswel as like pronowns the name just r8 i think for more ease of use..
One man ship, lambda class shuttle
Cargo bay, mirroring the body of the ship; beneath its original construction.
Droids in the style of the sentinels from The matrix movies, they can ride inside or outside the ship. These droids are all-in-one. Repair, asteroid mining, interpreter, one man speeder. Give them a shield too.
Six R6 type droids
Two medical droids
Cloaking device
...we don't fight, we run...
can you make a video on bb 8's lineup of astromechs
it just seems to be version 1 that is bb8 and i tried searching for bb lineup or history of bb and none exists
As much as I love r2 bb8 and the bb series completely stole the adorable sassy hilarious and brave little toaster robot side kick role for me!
Doesn’t mean I’m hating on r2 though he’s the king of the droids always
The occurrences of anachronistic numbering in Clone Wars era droids (using number designation that seem decades before they canonically should exist) is not necessarily a continuity error. Using the Letter-Number pattern (the D2 in R2 D2) would only allow numbering of up to 260 units . For general sale, it is not such a big deal having a number of droids with the same name; during the Clone Wars, this would prove to be a huge problem for a military the size of the Galactic Republic. Using a yet (well into the future) undersigned model number would allow for more variety in droid names.
I like how even star wars has a tech company that puts out the exact same product every year so we buy new
This is a fun video! Thanks! What is the source for this info, specifically the R-Series chart? Is it a visual dictionary? I understand you gleaned info from many sources but any info you have would help! Thanks!
R2d2 was the true hero of StarWars
Just how much more memory did the R3 need when the R2 could hold the entire plans of a space station?
So then did R2 receive regular updates? I'm thinking of the time I think it was Luke who said "thats alright, I'll hold onto the controls for now".
The R4 and R5 look like they could have been Heathkit models irl.
I know he ain't an R series, I dunno if he's even an atromech but T3-M4 is no2 next to R2 and R4
I would love to have an r2 or r7 series. With my luck it would have the t800s personality matrix.
I think we actually see an R3 unit appear in a few of the death star interior scenes.
My favorite droid is BA-77. Hey you might ask well get the blest and forget the rest. Lol.
During clonewars Jedi used prototypes not yet available in main market. So not much temporal error
If I could only have one astromech (R-5 is an easy NO); I would go with a R-6. White body and head with red stripes. Default styled head. Jet thrusters modded onto the legs. Would be named Sureshot.
What type of astromech droid was T-7 from the old republic?
I would love to have an R6 personally but I would be fine with an R5 and just upgrade him/her when ever I had time to turn them into a semi R6.
Can you do old republic droids next?
One of the R2 series, and I'm thinking Yellow coloring, designation name would be R2-I dunno, lol.
Watching these small drones attacking starfighters, and wondering why the Jedi are letting them destroy their droid companions, rather than force-pushing them off? I've seen them do tougher things with little issue, not sure why they didn't do this more often.
Maybe the buzz droids were sterilized. I heard that Jedi can’t use the force on things that aren’t living or covered in living things.
@@Cretaceous158 Possibly, but I don't know. It would definitely explain some situations, but I feel like even sterilized medical equipment can be, and possibly has been thrown before. But again, that would definitely make some interesting sense!
Your thumbnail calls the red one an R5 unit. I know this was retroactive continuity, but Luke even called that red on another R2 unit..
"Uncule Owen... this R2 unit has a bad motivator, look!"
That was another R2 unit, just of a different chassis. :P at least originally.
I've ALWAYS wondered WHY every astromech was referred to as "R2 units", especially since they were preceded by a R1 series - now I know!! COMMERCIAL POPUALRITY!!
What if industrial automation gave the Jedi order high council access to some of their late series prototypes for beta testing field data 🤔
Astromechs are the coolest droids
