With Modi govt clearing the long-awaited Rs 48,000 crore deal for 83 HAL Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, Shekhar Gupta takes a look at what this means to the IAF given the armed service's checkered record with indigenous aeronautics, India's decades of technology denial, and more in episode 661 of #CutTheClutter.

I was one of the two IAF pilots deputed to ADA for 8 months in 1988 to design the cockpit interface, along with one Technical officer. There was a lot of josh then, which petered out with time. The Head of ADA was Dr Kota Harinarayan. ADE, under Dr KG Krishna, was associated indirectly. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was also part of the project, leading the ASTRA project. Yes, the same Astra that we are buying today. 25 years in the making, and under pressure from the IAF.

    Dear Sh. SG
Apologies for writing in late as I saw this twice or more. . Your session on LCA is not only anecdotal but full of technical specs so lucidly explained. Congratulations to the team who pieced this together. One myth this CTC does for sure is break myth of LCA being a cheap replacement but truly the best in the class and industry. You linked the political dynamics of old and new to highlight to keen readers how this evolved or got delayed.
What I like best about CTC is that you don't place your opinions to make the presentation .. Just perhaps at the end a subtle hint as to where you stand on the topic personally. Kudos to this approach.
While you did highlight the pointers about this unit, a poignant question raised by you how wil technology evolve and new Jets will keep up

During those days in the early 1991 - 95s HAL used to also manufacture BUS Bodies to make money... You won't believe it but this is a Fact.
