The only *visible reason* for this seems that by late 1990s Modi was emerging as a strong political contender & a threat to Sonia's power.

So US interest is not party politics but _how_ situations within India can be used to its benefit . Godhra gave them the opportunity & Sonia's willingness & most likely support was certainly of help to them. Sonia finally was the Govt.

Tamils in Sri Lanka, Hindu is Pakistan and Bangladesh, how many of these "refugees" does India have to handle? We already have enough poor people, let's lift them out of poverty. I worry about my Tamil brothers in India. India's influence on the subcontinent and the world is strong enough. We should not aspire to be like America and get involved in the internal matters of other countries. SG and New Delhi liberals have a lots of sympathy on Pakistan and Pakistan based terrorism but too harsh on Srilankan tamils and LTTE. unlike India, srilanka wasn't a secular country. Post independence Indian politics depends on minority votes but Srilankan politics depends on majority votes. Post independence srilankan tamils were badly treated and LTTE was a result of it .
Rajiv ghandhi handled the situation so badly with out understanding the real issues in Srilanka. IPKF was poorly informed. Thousands of srilankan tamils died due to IPKF attrocities. That was the reason for assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
However, things have changed today. Unlike early years post independence, srilankan tamils are not discriminated today and one of the reason for that srilankan tamils taking arms in mid 70s for survival.
SG knows only 50% of the srilankan issue . You need to research srilanka more. Meanwhile SG is far more liberal towards Pakistan related issues

In fact at the time of Rajeev's assassination, the DMK government had already been dismissed by Chandhra Shekhar on the advice of Cho and Jayalalitha. So TN was under President's rule and Rajeev's security was the sole responsibility of the the Chandhra Shekhar government and under Subramanian Swamy's control.

You may have negative opinion about India and the Indian Armed Forces as a whole but when you are talking about wars and warfare in general you can not determine anything when you haven't studied about it.
U.S failed in Vietnam, Iraq war and war in Afghanistan despite being such a powerful and advanced military on Earth.
LTTE were not 'few guerillas hiding in the jungle'. They had well organized structure like an professional Army would have and they had manpower of an Army division. They had categorized their force into four branches (Army, Air Force, Black Tigers and Naval forces). Their fighters were well trained and disciplined. They knew how to follow orders, organize, plan and execute attacks. And they had weapons supplied to them which were M-16s with UBG, AK-47s, RPG, etc. Sri Lankan Army also supplied them with weapons and intelligence on Indian forces movements and plans when it was playing a double game with Indian Army.
They were trained by the Indian Army and the RA&W like Americans trained Mujahedin, Al-Qaeda like organizations which later came to bite them only.

Thanks for this episode. After this episode I read some books on srilanka and the internal disturbances. I read about how sinhale politicians denied basic rights to eelam Tamils and that lead to LTTE terror and all these wars. I felt so sad for the plight of eelam Tamils and common Sinhalese. Genocide happened in 2009. Rajiv Gandhi was murdered 2 decades earlier. IPKF attacked LTTE and civilians who protected LTTE only after LTTE continued to breach peace terms by attacking Srilankan army and IPKF. So IPKF attempted to disarm LTTE aggressively. Yes, IPKF committed horrendous crimes. But the peace was broken by LTTE. Now why did Prabhakaran take money from Premadasa to attack IPKF? Ungala nalla yemaathi vechurkaaanga seemanum vaikovum.

My only issue is there is no mention about the Genocide or other killings of innocents and about what exactly these 7 guys did. @@truesoldier6871 I don't know about the exact political situation and the assasination but I want to point out a thing that in the movie madras cafe by the end john Abraham's character says that they killed my PM and cries and the media also reports things like this that he was the PM when he got assasinated but he was not he was a candidate and was in a strong position to win but didn't win yet and wasn't a sworn PM. Secondly, about the dignity thing well I think it hurts a little because they killed a huge prominent leader of the country who was a candidate for PM and especially during an election, I think this is a little concerning but not as much as they make it out to be. I would love to listen to these stories even if they are 50 to 60 minutes long. This show is brilliant way to stay informed in an engaging manner. I do not feel like I am listening to news but rather learning something from a professor.

A Sinhala soldier hit Rajiv Gandhi's head with his rifle during one of his visit, for he assumed that RG was being too helpful to Tamils... If only RG had recognized at that moment the vile virility of Sinahala fascism that was capable of insulting india today things would have been different. India made a very big political mistake of treating this man's actions as anything but political. .. he took up arms and did what he did because he had no choice ... My recollection was that Premadasa was killed in a Mayday rally, the suicide bomber didn't hug Premadasa. He got close to him in the middle of the road and detonate the bomb. I don't think he was underage and he was known to one of Premadasa's aid, not Premadasa.

This is a classical example where even a very renowned journalist like shekar gupta's view is so skewed, where the judgements are based on the Srilankan narrative (which also happens to be Indian government's) narrative but far away from Tamils. I thought SG would talk about the Security lapses , larger conspiracy indicated by the Verma commission and Jain commission constituted by the Indian agencies. But unfortunately nothing about was spoken about. The chief investigating officer from CBI, Mr. Ragothaman who handled the Rajiv gandhi assasination has documented these 7 people are just small pawns, given death and life imprisonment (for allegedly buying a battery required for the Bomb). Karthikeyan, IPS who filed the convict's statement later filed an affidavit in 2011, that he indeed changed the statement of the convict which led to the court indicting them for death penalty. The judge Thomas who was responsible convicting these people has called for the remission of sentences on the basis of human consideration.
These are the details many tamils are aware and the people mentioned above have more credibility to the case details than anyone of us who also happen to request for the sentences to be commuted. But the rest of India buys into a different narrative. A narrative that fits India's political agenda. SG is not an excpetion to it.

A little dig into the case about the information available in public domain will tell you what is the role of these 7 ppl. They are not like Ajmal Kasab. Whether these 7 people are the master minds of rajiv assasination or smallest of the pawns is the question. Many of the convicts are not even part of LTTE is the sad truth. The sheer inability of not able to catch the actual master minds and convict the innocent pawns projecting them as killers of rajeev without knowing the details is the Indian narrative. This narrative fits well for the political agenda that India have punished the killers of Rajiv gandhi.
If you are interested in the details of the case, you can go through from the same CBI officer who filed charges aginst the LTTE, the seven people and what he feels if these 7 ppl are the killers and do they deserve this.
