"See the floor, be the floor". I LOVE that!! Larry's court vision was second to none, imo. I have Larry Legend at #1 because the game was much tougher (physical, aggressive) in his era. Also, consider things like great improvement in sports medicine and the wonky sneakers and tight, mini shorts (lol) they used to have to wear. AND he wasn't being sat out due to injuries every other thing~ he played every freakin' game, and he played every one full-out. Passer, rebounder, ball-stealer, scorer and assists. Yep, he's my GOAT 🍀🍀🍀

When Bird came back from that faceplant on the floor, he came back with a cracked cheekbone, played the rest of the game, and the Celtics won. For the last six years of his career he played with spinal issues. Many times he wouldn't/couldn't sit on the bench, he had to lie down. As much as he liked being in the limelight. to help the team win, he often noticed that there were team members that he thought weren't getting their fair share of the plays, so he would give the ball to them as often as possible.

People nowadays talk a lot abaut the Dirk Nowitzki "Move", but 40+ years ago Larry Bird was the man who Invented that "Move" ...the "Fade Away".
Dirk spent hours upon hours watching old Celtics games with Bird Time and Again doing the move so easily and "score" that he thought (and well) why not..??!! And like Bird,it worked for Dirk.
PS: i had the Previlegde to dozens of Celtic games with Larry Bird, and honestly in my opinion he's the Player with the Greatest IQ Ever to play the game. He's Awareness was/ still is on another Level from any other player back then or since.

I'm almost with you, but Wilt scored a lot of fade aways in the 60s and 70s. The stat I've heard is 60% of his points were from fade aways, which sounds a bit much, but we can be sure he was using it. Larry didn't invent it, but he perfected it for outside shots - the 3-pointer was instituted in 1980, and Larry pushed the fade away from a mid-range shot out well beyond the line.

He used to shoot a decent number of baseline shots that actually had to clear the backboard to drop. In those days I had to see how that was possible and what kind of arch that took to fall. Even a few of the deep corner threes he shot came from an angle behind the backboard beside the two from directly behind it.

@@innosanto I have Magic's prime in the second tier, alongside Russell, Oscar, Kareem, Hakeem, Kobe and Duncan. Wilt's prime is in the first tier, together with Bird and Jordan. Best guard? Jordan. Best forward? Bird. Best center? Wilt. Would I put Jordan and Wilt on the same team? Probably not, but I would happily pair Bird with either. Give that team even decent role-players, and I'd give them better than average odds against any combination not including those two.
Wilt >> Walton + Parish, and Jordan >> Dennis Johnson + Danny Ainge. Give Bird either of those weapons of league destruction, and they're winning consecutive titles, because you can't stop Bird on his own, let alone with a partner at his level, and they will keep you from playing the offensive game you want to play.
I give Jordan and Bird the unholy trinity of Duncan, Russell and Stockton, to form "Team Synergy". Duncan and Russell are my twin towers, the whole team's fed by Stockton, and nobody cares about anything except winning.
I give Wilt and Bird the three greats Hakeem, West and Magic, because why not? Two great three-point shooters and two supreme big men, tailor made for Showtime, with Magic being the biggest defensive liability - which says something.

Bird, Jordan, Kobe were psychotic about it. Everybody else is human beings. Those 3 have documentaries devoted to how far they would go to get that much more of an edge. They are crazy. LeBron ain't crazy. He's crazy great, but not Goat crazy. I don't think Larry ever flopped once in his entire career. One, because it wouldn't have done any good in the 80's when you could be pistol whipped and still not draw a foul. Im a HUGE L.B. fan but I have to be realistic and give first place to MJ one for his mad athleticism / verticality and other superior physical attributes which Larry didnt have and the reason you never saw him doing mad poster dunks etc. MJ also had a crazy 69 point game against the Cavaliers - the 80's was a great era for basketball, there were so many teams stacked with hall of famers it made for a whole decade of great competition.

jordan never got a playoff win over larry as a player. Went 0-6 against birds celtics. Larry is also the only player since the nba merger to get three consecutive league mvps, only other players to do so at all are wilt and russell. Larry was a killer to. The year before larry came into the league the celtics only wno 21 games larrys rookie year as the only addition to the team he took them to 61 wins and the conference finals vs the sixers. Even Jordan has larry in his top 3.

Larry’s first year Celtics went from last to eastern conference championship game, beat every great of his day which nobody else can say, 6-0 against MJ, played with a bad back most of his career, and a mangled finger on his shooting hand. Also Larry was dangerous without the ball while MJ was only dangerous with the ball. Also 3 MVP’s in a row, and 2 or 3 many other times. Also he didn’t shop teams, and played when assault and battery was allowed, and 3 pointers were new and not promoted.

Larry had the best true step back jumper in the history of the game. Not this hippity hop gather step stuff they get today. He was also the best passing small forward in the history of the game. That is why you see him dropping guys on simple moves.
In today’s game, Larry would be even better. Give him the gather, give him no hand checking, give him big men around him who stretch the floor? It would not even be fair.

Both assasins, both wanted the ball when it mattered most. Jordan’s athleticism and longevity puts him above Bird. He was at peak performance way longer than Larry was

Three Rings, 3 consecutive MVPs, 3 consecutive 3-point contests, founded 50-40-90 Club and achieved it twice, Rookie of the Year over Magic, even though Magic won the Championship (63 points to 3!) because he took his team from 29 wins the previous year to 62 wins BY HIMSELF.
