    Bird is incredible. There has never been anyone like him. I don't think anyone compares. Nobody has ever played at his level with the injuries Bird had. He's the GOAT.

    I was at the Pacers playoff game. Larry came back with a fractured cheek and a mild concussion. He snuck past the doc to get back on the floor. That's when men played the game.

      He also chugged a beer with double vision b4 returning. & what a return in the Pacers game. He didn't talk to a coach or teammate. Went, crouched unbuttoned his jacket & subbed in. Game over!

    There was no game the night of Bird's retirement. They had standing room only in Boston Garden that night. The steal against Detroit was in game 5 of the playoffs when the Bad Boys were on the rise and is still the greatest play I've seen anyone make, I knew that game and the series were over but, Larry. He just played the game better fundamentally than anyone else to this day.

    The untold part of the story when he broke his cheek bone, is that Bird did not even know if he would be able to play that night. Back pain was so severe, he could barely put on his uniform. Also, the hit on the floor gave him a concussion, in addition to the broken cheek. After all of that, he came back out and led the Celtics to another win.

    Bird was the best all around player ever. He had no weaknesses. And he was elite in several categories. Best passer in history? He’s in the convo. Best trash talker? He’s in the convo. Top tier 3 point shooter, great rebounder, great hustle, great at involving the whole team, great at psyching opponents out of their games, he could do all the little things that win games as well as dominate on the court when he wanted to. Bird played only about 12 years of a 13 season career, so his overall stats don’t jump at you, but his game and season averages do.

    This is what I love.. the respect that Larry and Magic had for each other.. just says it all.. And they're still friends to this day.. Magic said Larry was one of the first ppl he called when he was diagnosed with HIV.. Larry stood by him.. That's just amazing to me because back then.. HIV was a death sentence and everyone was scared of it. He left the game with no scandals and with the respect of his peers.. That's a career.

    Larry was the guy who stayed after every practice to shoot 100 more shots before going home. He dribbled the entire Boston Garden floor in a gridded pattern to find and map any soft spots in the floor to use to his advantage. His basketball IQ was truly off the charts. He played basketball like Pete Rose played baseball. Neither of them was terribly athletic so they worked so much harder to make up for any physical shortcomings. They were always two steps ahead of the play. As Julius Irving said, "Bird just always seemed to be in the right place at the right time". And he did and that was never an accident

  • @mikewatts867
    @mikewatts867 Місяць тому +1

    When he banged his face on the floor, he broke his cheek and got a concussion, they say he even lost consciousness briefly. When he came back out, he was seeing two rims and had to figure out which was the real one. And he still led his team back for the win. Kobe’s the only other guy I can think of in that realm, playing hurt under any circumstances.

    Every skill for team play that's not volume or longevity, prime Larry Joe Bird was top-10 all-time. Sure, he wasn't a top-10 dunker, a top-10 lock-down defender or a top-10 shot blocker, but he is still top-10 for making sure the ball gets through the hoop and a top-10 team defender. His vision, reading, hustle, creativity and selflessness along with his elite fundamentals made him a threat anywhere on the court and gave his teammates that much more space to do their jobs.

      When Magic was diagnosed with HIV, so so so many people turned on him. Other basketball players made all kinds of outrageous claims, his own teammates didn't want him around. But Bird was one of the few friends who stuck with him, stayed by his side. Every time I've seen Magic talk about that, he breaks down, calling Bird one of his few true friends.

    It was a lot rougher game back then. Guys didn't give up layups like they do now, instead he would get planted on his ass and shoot two free throws. Now if you get within 3 feet of Doncic or LeBron they send him to the free throw line. It was a more fun game back in the Bird-Johnson, and towards the end, Jordan, era.

    Anyone who says Bird isn't Top 10 all time is clueless about basketball. Personally, if I could select my all-time starting 5, he's there. Not only was he absolutely great as a scorer, passer, and defender, but one thing that sets him apart is that he made everyone else on the court so much better.
    Here's a few stats to tell you what he was during his prime. For eight consecutive years, he finished first or second in the league MVP voting. No one else has ever done that. He won the award three times.
    One stat people don't know that says it all -- the season before Bird joined the Celtics, the team was 29-53. His first season they were 61-21, with no significant changes in personnel, other than Bird.
    He is the only man to win MVP, Coach of the Year, and GM of the Year. He also had two championship series MVPs (three titles), won the first 3 three-point contests but didn't compete any more after that. During his prime, before the back and Achilles injuries occurred, he was probably one of the three greatest players to ever walk on hardwood.

    I love watching reactions to Larry Bird's ultimate mixtape, the video itself never fails to give me goosebumps and even gets me tearing up at the end! I also like your analysis, and agree- he definitely is underrated and needs to be appreciated more, especially by the current generation! Personally, I never watched him play live (I started liking/watching/playing basketball around 2003 when I was a freshman in HS (the 2000s was an amazing era btw), so I'm not too much older than you. However, thanks to the internet, I was able to watch his highlights and of course check out his stats. It would've been awesome to be able to see him live! One of the craziest things is that Larry played injured for most of his career, and was still able to put up insane numbers, win several championships, MVPs, etc. He was also an above average athlete as you mentioned, especially in the first half of his career. He was an above average defender as well (averaged 1.7 SPG, 0.8 BPG which are great numbers for a forward). He was also an amazing passer, and averaged 6.3 APG in his career, which is impressive considering the era he played was relatively low scoring. Speaking of scoring, he averaged 24.3 PPG, which is amazing, on top of that- 10.0 RPG! Although he wasn't a volume 3 pt shooter (no one really was back then), he hit 37.6% from 3 which was great, and 88.6% FT, which is elite. If he played in this era, he would easily average numbers similar to what Luka is doing- averaging a triple double with at least 35 PPG! Anyway, thanks for the reaction! Btw, my fav player growing up was Andrei (AK47) Kirilenko, you should react to his highlights! He was an elite defender and really good overall player, and destroyed the stereotype of white guys not being athletic and just being shooters lol, he was the opposite- super athletic and an average shooter. He definitely surprised the league when he came in!!

    Bird was fairly athletic & would dunk till 86 & his 1st bad back injury. Probably since he played most every game & playoff to ring. In 87 he could no longer dunk. In 88 he had heel spurs & vs Bad Boys injured BOTH Achilles that required surgery 9 games in 89.
    To really understand Bird you have to watch full game because he did do everything on both ends of court. Screens & picks but really watch how he used Iq & a bit of dirty play (elbow, butt bumpa jersey grab) to get rebounds. He averaged more rebounds than Ewing! 1st 60/40/90 player ever. Bird & Magic have highest win % ever still. In 86 the Celtics won 50 of 51 home games including playoffs!

    Defense might have been the weaker part of his game, and Bird may not have been fast enough to go 1 on 1 against some of the really athletic guys, but he was still 3 time All Defense, and to this day is 5th or 6th in defensive win shares. He was amazing at reading the offense, disrupting plays, picking off passing routes, etc... He averaged double digit rebounds playing heads up with Kareem, Hakeem, Lambeer, Rodman, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, etc... That's the weak part of his game. Anybody who doesn't have have him in their top five all time is nuts.

    There are several things most younger people do not know about Larry Bird that affected his career, but he still put in the effort to be considered in the GOAT conversation just because he ONLY knew how to give everything he had every time he played. When Bird graduated college after his senior year he was injured ( something with his shooting hand ) playing a pickup baseball game that summer so even before he played his first game for Boston that injury affected his shooting and he worked on his game so it would be the best he could be. Bird won ROTY his first season in the league and helped Boston improve their record by over 20 games from the season before and they made the playoffs. Bird lead Boston to the first of his 3 championships the next season. During the off season in 1985 Bird injured his back severely physically doing the work himself to help his mother have a new driveway installed at the family home back in French Lick, IN and that injury would affect his game for the rest of his career yet his stats still increased every year for the next several years, he won 3 consecutive MVP awards ( only 3 other players ever won it 3 years in a row ), he won the first ever 3 point shooting contest held at the All Star games and won it the next two years after that. He was the founding member of the 50, 40, 90 club with over 50% shooting from the field, 40% from the 3 point line and 90% from the foul line.and he did that for 4 straight seasons.
    Larry always knew where his team mates were at any given point during the game many times without even having to look because he would make many passes to a spot hitting them for open baskets. The story of the left handed game was just one of the many many things Larry did to challenge himself when he played to motivate himself to play harder in games. He would constantly talk trash to the other teams players and coaching staff telling them during time outs where he was going to get the ball and what he was going to do with it and they could still not stop him. Larry was 6 - 0 in playoff games against Michael Jordan. It took the Detroit Pistons three straight tries to beat Boston in the Eastern Conference playoffs and reach the NBA Finals. Personally to me Larry Bird was the king of the shit shot, that meant he could literally throw up anything from almost any angle at the basket and it would somehow go in when he needed it to most. Lebron James may have more championships and more career points than Larry Bird simply because he has played at least 7 - 8 more seasons and never had the injuries Bird had and Bird still has a higher winning percentage than James. Larry's big rival during his career was Magic and Magic ended his career with a slightly higher win percentage by about 1/10 of a percentage and that was after he played 3 more years than Bird and that 1/10th of a percentage point amounts to about 10 games and of his 13 seasons Larry only played 6 games of the 1988-89 season ( his 10th ) after he had surgery on both feet because of bone spurs in his heels.
    Larry would dominate in today's much less physical league and would have been able to play far longer with today's medical advancements and NOBODY has ever had a mind for the game like him before or since he played. He could do everything in the game as a player, shooting, rebounding, passing and even defense. Larry Bird, regardless of if you think of him as the GOAT was aa great player.

    Imagine if Bird had of swapped teams like LeBron, he would have 12 rings, but he played for 1 team only. FULL STOP.

    I always say if you put together a basketball team that would be considered the greatest of all time one of the five players would always be Larry Bird.

  • @glenmel78
    @glenmel78 Місяць тому +1

    If Larry was non athletic, then what's everyones excuse for getting beat up so badly on court? The logic doesn't add up. That was a descriptive given to Larry by fans that were upset their favorite player or team got torched. Repeatedly. You don't have to be fast if you're that good.

    It is a tragedy that there just aren't enough footage of guys like Larry and Magic. Or Kareem for that matter. You kids have no clue how incredible it was to watch Larry's Celtics and Magic's Lakers clash in real time in the 80s. You kids probably grew up practicing Lebron or KD's moves, we grew up mimicking the SkyHook, Bird's over the head shooting forms, and Magic's no look passes. Bird is a top 5 all time player, and in my book, the #1 forward of all time.

      @@ytkgaming1665when Bird's head hit the floor in the game against the Pacers it fractured his right cheek and gave him a concussion. The night before that game he spent in the hospital in traction for his back. His teammates said he struggled getting dressed to play that night. Check out the 5 times Larry Bird was injured but refused to quit and the 4 times Larry Bird was hurt but showed toughness. The injuries are mind blowing. One they don't mention in either video is his first practice his sophomore year he broke his ankle in two places and tore the ligaments in it. While spending weeks on crutches he learned to shoot left handed during practice. He's just an amazing person. Nobody else like him. The more you learn the more you admire him.

    re todays game. imo it’s about liability as well as conserving star players rather than lessen their playing years
    legend’s court awareness and IQ makes him my 🐐 above the others. they may appear stronger and showmanship, he did everything they did but smooth. they seem faster, he was fast if he needed to be but he didn’t. he pretty much controlled the pace. there was nothing he couldn’t do. pass shoot defend intimidate and and and. his mental and physical strength applied to playing with serious injuries his whole career. again, my 🐐 🍀

    Larry is top 3, maybe the GOAT. His passing was phenomenal. 3 times consecutive MVP. Only 2 other players have ever done that. Coach of the year and Executive of the Year. 11 times all-star team. And many more major awards. To me, Bird is the GOAT. Oh, Jordan was 0-7 against Bird in the playoffs. LeBron couldn't carry Larry's jock.
    When Larry was injured in the Pacer game, he had a fractured right cheek bone and a concussion but game back to beat the Pacers.
