There is a story from when he was prez of the Pacers (I think as he was also coach and gm for them). Anyway he was like 50 sonething, wearing a suit, and he came out, didn’t say a word to the players, and hit like 10 threes in a row and just walked off the court, nothing said. He just wanted to show the young guys what’s up. I bet he could do the same today. Different breed.
Coach wanted them to see they could lose by not coaching the game. Now Bird said he noticed that coach wasn't playing Jordan. You have to watch Larry bird and magic dropping dimes at 1992 Olympics video. Larry was a menace until the day he retired. Now because of his double Achilles surgery and back surgery to remove a disc in his back he missed a lot of games that last year. When the doctor preformed back surgery on him taking 4 hours he said I don't know how even played at all. But that was Larry . No excuses he just went out and played. I loved it. There was a show out for a while, probably a decade or more ago, where people could challenge the bench players of pro sports teams. The #11 guy for the Celtics came out to a street ball venue and took the best challengers on. It wasn't even close. The bench guy for the Celtics cleaned house.
The players were all in their individual egos. The coach decided to teach them a lesson about playing as a team. They learned their lesson and started to play as a team at last.
What I remember about those summer games was obviously the USA stomping everyone but the story that came out about their one inter squad scrimmage that apparently was just epic as it was their most competitive game of the olympics...amongst themselves...and how much they went at each other because it was 12 of the most competitive players ever that hated to lose even in a practice scrimmage. As far as we know there was no video of this game which makes it even more amazing to hear about, all just from observers who were there.
I always remembered the dream team when they got their gold medals, Larry Bird was the only player that had his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. Look at the picture on this video.
I saw another one where they showed the college kids had been doing 3 man weaves for 45 mins before meeting up with the Dream Team. The NBA guys were cold, not focused.... He did it because he had noticed that the pros had been trying to vie with each other, trying show how good they were, rather than playing like a team. By making them lose, it woke them up and changed their attitudes.

I do not believe they let them win. I believe Chuck Daly set them up for failure. The Dream Team was a team of players who had spent their whole careers being mortal enemies on the court. They all pretty much thought they were the best and honestly didn't know how to play together (only against one another). I believe he wanted to show them that even the best can lose if they don't work as a team. That first day, they were either trying to show they were the best or they were trying not to step on each other's toes. There was no in between. The college kids didn't have this problem and took advantage. I think them losing did two things. 1: Showed them that this is serious and even young talent with little experience could beat the best players in the league if they didn't learn to play as one. 2: It left them with a loss that became personal to each of them which gave them a reason to unify and show the college kids what real NBA players look like. It gave them the push they needed to focus on the win as a team without Chuck having to do much to get them in line and on the same page. It was a genius move you would expect out of a coach of his caliber and part of the reason he was chosen because he was great at working with players with otherwise conflicting personalities and getting results.
The dream team beat themselves the first game. They were all superstars and everybody wanted to show why they were picked. They didn’t play as a team and the college team beat them. The coach did not intervene because he wanted them humbled so they would listen to him. He even kept the STAR Jordan sitting on the bench most of the game. Imagine how hard coaching the best players of the NBA on one team. Why would they listen to a coach. Coach Daly let the college players get ahead, then stopped the practice, cleared the scoreboard and let the press into the building. He told the team anybody can be beat and then gave them his plan to follow. It worked but every practice was like a championship game after that. There was not one game in that Olympics where the outcome of the Dream team was in doubt. Coach Daly got the stars to play as a team. He even became golf buddies with Jordan, who had to hate him. Daly designed the defense that drove Jordan crazy when he played the Bad Boys.
100% Chuck Daily threw that game. To teach the guys a lesson. Don't play around take this seriously. It's a lesson for the dream team not to take it lightly anyone can win on any day. So play hard if you want that gold medal.

@@AyySolid handles dont make you better. if anything OVER DRIBBLING is extremely in efficient. Also Iverson said a lot of stuff, just like Bird, and Jordan, that contradicts themselves.. Iverson did over dribble himself, guess that's why he is a journey man, but so is Kyrie I guess, well Kyrie is malcontent actually. I think they were BOTH more flash than substance actually and not really winning players.

The players didn’t throw the game Chuck Daly did. He didn’t sub, Jordan didn’t play much etc. Chuck was trying to get them to understand they could lose if they took anybody lightly.
