  • NOTE - this video is OLD NEWS. Have a much better way now :) • A Cubase / Disabled VE... . For historical reasons only, this video is my old method. I originally wrote - Since several folks over the years asked how I have it organised, so here it is. Basic specs - W10 Pro, i74930 stock speed, 64gb RAM, 2xGT610 cards, RME Babyface.

    Awesome video, great to see a pro template.. I take it the samples are all on a slave and the project only n the DAW except for some of the vst's you mentioned are easier to just disable and load from the project file? My big question though: with the reverb's are there any particular types you recommend? And do you have the ER and Tails as mono or stereo or a combo? ... getting a coherent sound with Reverbs and panning confuse me :/ . many thanks!

    Thank you Guy,
    I something miss about organising rack instruments folder. When you create rack instruments with midi track you’ve some additional folder and track there. We generally looking ready to use template and I do not know how organise these folder except midi and output. Do you have any idea about it ?

    Thanks Guy. Not sure if you will see this after so long, but have you tried expression maps for the articulations?

    Great video & thanks for posting ..watched numerous times, a slow learner:-), and been moving from Logic to Cubase so bit of a curve! Do you run VEP on the same machine or a separate one? TIA David

    So you don't use expression maps at all? Or should i say VST expression? You could make your template even smaller with actually way more articulations if you wanted to. Just saying. Thanks for the video BTW. @ around 16:00 you load a patch by clicking on a track? I don't understand how that works. :-/ I'm gonna have to investigate that.

    So, is the purge action the only thing preventing the samples from activating from Cubase startup? So when creating my template, I should make sure they are all purged when the template opens, and then when I write in, then the patch activates and loads in?

    • @guyrowland4711
      @guyrowland4711  6 років тому

      Hi Stuart - yes to both pretty much. If a patch loads purged, then it just loads in the notes as you play in the background. It works incredibly well....

  • @i_programmer

    Hi! Could you tell please, what is the advantage of using one vsti track for one articulation instead of using an expression map for an instrument? If violin 1 has legatos, staccatos, slides in its part - isn't it easier to write it on a single midi track? And how to export few tracks in sheet music for one instrument?

  • @CybreSmee
    @CybreSmee 6 років тому

    Do you need to use VEP simply because Cubase has crappy performance? Using a DAW like Reaper or Reason, for instance, would you need that extra software - surely it just reduces CPU performance just sitting in the background?

    • @guyrowland4711
      @guyrowland4711  6 років тому +1

      Hiya - performance is definitely a big reason - Cubase I understand is way worse than Reaper on that score. The other big advantage is that if you work with multiple projects, you only need to load the instruments once at the start of the day.

    Guy, would you please explain more about your custom shortcut for enabling/disabling tracks? Does it also disable the corresponding instrument in the VEP server?

    • @guyrowland4711
      @guyrowland4711  6 років тому

      It's very simple the way I do it - it's just a keyboard shortcut for Cubase's Enable / Disable (right clicking the option from menu does the same thing). I'm aware VEP can also enable / disable, but I've yet to find a workflow that really works - it needs to work on a channel basis, not a whole instance.

      Between Cubase, VEP, and Kontakt there is a lot to learn, especially with regard to conserving computer memory resources. I have sample libraries set up as instances in VEP. Within a VEP instance (library), I have up to 16 instruments/plugins that are Kontakt multis (e.g., string ensemble, woodwind, percussion etc.). Each Kontakt instrument (up to 16) in the multi could be articulations or instrument combinations, depending on the setup of the library. I have found a way to use a Cubase Quick Control to enable/disable a single VEP instrument/plugin (associated with a given Cubase MIDI track) within a VEP instance, which means it toggles a Kontakt multi on and off, and does not disable the entire library. The Quick Control is assigned to an unused MIDI channel, such as 119. VEP Automation Mapping takes care of turning the VEP instrument/plugin on or off when it sees a signal on that MIDI channel. That might be sufficient for some workflows -- it even can automated on a Cubase track or handled by an outboard remote controller. What I have not figured out yet is how to reach into one of the Kontakt multis to purge the unused samples (or all of them) and reload them for a given Kontakt instrument. My guess is that I would have to use KSP scripting to accomplish that. Of course, one could simply reach over to VEP and Kontakt to do things manually, but that would just wouldn't be as elegant as having a slick Cubase template, and a hassle if one has a VEP server on another machine. The end objective is to put all the machinery under the skins so that I can focus on making the music while not having my machine burp and hiccup under the load of all this software.

      @guyrowland4711  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for this - I did spend some time with the automation thing and Quick Controls, I'm not 100% sure why I ended up disliking it. I do remember wishing VSL would add a Wake On Midi command, that would be perfect - if any disabled channel received a midi note, it would automatically wake. That would be seamless enough for me!

    Thanks for this. I've downloaded the 30 day demo of VEP and it's a very impressive program. One question though if that's OK. How do you get multiple server instances (in your case VSL, Audiobro, Project Sam etc.) operating at the same time? I'm only managing to get one of them working at a time.

    Are you up selling me this template? :)
    I use Cubase on a new 128gb ram computer and have VEP 5 (never used it yet though)

    Please! Understand me, how i can send midi channel ports (1,2) with 2 loaded kontakts with 16 instruments in them in Vienna? And how send the signal of them at the mixer in my DAW, FL20 actualy. What i must to do? Im broke my brain right now and i cant find any lesson of this. Pls tell me how u do this in cubase step by step.

    • @guyrowland4711
      @guyrowland4711  4 роки тому +1

      Check you're using the VST3 version of the plugin in your DAW. VST2 can only handle 1 port. Then its just a case of routing to the right port and channel in the DAW, and making sure that the port is set correctly in VE Pro, and the midi channel in VE Pro is set to ALL (it defaults to 1, so always needs to be changed). Good luck!

      Guy Rowland do you think 32 GB on my main pc and 12 GB on my vsl slave is good enough for a huge template?

    • @guyrowland4711
      @guyrowland4711  6 років тому

      Wesley - You could do quite a bit with that, for sure. The template in the video needs about 40gb to open, then due to curious Windows memory management this drops to about 25gb over the next hour or so. But then again you'll be loading sample memory as you work, so that will offset those reductions a bit . You need to add on some OS and DAW headroom too. So you might not be able to run something quite this big (arguably too big), but certainly enough with purging to get a good orchestral template going.

      Thanks for sharing. Do you think that with the i7-9700K, 64GB of RAM, I could put together such a template? And of course with VEPro.
