This is very very good. I have really had a love/hate relationship with expression maps having used commercial ones but this makes total sense. Thank you Tom. BTW love your brass library
Thank you Junkie XL for sharing this and for simplifying the process. I have been experimenting with expression maps for a while, but could never the get them to work quite right. Thanks for the tips, can't wait to integrate these into my rig! Cheers!
These tutorials of yours are always full of good stuff, thank you my man
The level of depth, knowledge and insight you provide is utterly, utterly unprecedented. You are an inspiration as an artist, engineer, teacher and human being. Thank you SO much and God bless you!
Or, in this case, "udderly, udderly"! ;P I agree. Thanks Tom!
Agree with this all the way! Thanks Tom!
you prolly dont care at all but does any of you know a way to get back into an instagram account??
I was dumb lost the password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Madden Julien instablaster ;)
@Ben Hugo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Learning more about Cubase here than any other tutorial video channels.
I bought Art Conductor, a collection of Expression Maps (or the equivalent thing to Logic). It saved me a lot of time as you hadn't released this fantastic video yet.
I use atributes instead of directions because I can change the articulation from the up menu.
I miss the ability of grouping expression maps in folders...
Thank you for this great video :)
Thank you so much, Tom! I can't even express how appreciative I am of you sharing your knowledge!
It may take time to build these expression maps, but the thing is
*It sure as hell beats going back into the Kontakt Instance, seeing which Keyswitch is needed for a technique, then plotting that MIDI note.*
The biggest benefit is having this translate directly into Dorico for when you export the scores! This is really nice.
Thanks for this as always!
That's the first time I understood the basic workforce of templates and expression maps for orchestration! This is a wonderful tutorial. Thankx for not being snobby and forgetting about the noobs. ❤️
Have done this for a few libraries. It's SO tedious, but it is such a joy to work with afterwards.
Thanks for a well explained quality tutorial.
Although I have, for the most part, already worked out how to use Expression Maps, I now have a good way of doing excellent fp articulations in Albion 1 brass. All thanks to something I don't think you mentioned in this video - but I did see it near the beginning. Two 'note on' entries for both long and short expressions. Thank you Tom!
Wow!!! Thanks so much for going so deep into this! Was waiting for this episode and you certainly over delivered
So glad I stumbled across this channel from Rick's interview. Literally a gold mine for a Cubase user.
I was battling with building one of these...I can´t describe how happy I was when I saw you made a video on it! Thanks Tom :)
Great video, Tom. I’ve used both expression maps and key switches. You have reminded me how fast the work flow can be with expression maps. I wandered away from them the past two years because I built my own custom matrices in my Vienna Libraries. I am going to build expression maps to work with my VSL setup. This is great support and reminder for me. My work flow and thinking effort will become more efficient. Thanks!
Hey Junkie, thank you for your videos, they are so useful! I'd just like to ask about your 4 different levels of Vibrato. Is there a reason you prefer to use different levels of vibrato in expression maps instead of using the CC Vibrato controller lane?
Also how are your different levels set up? Are they just set to a value between 0-127?
Thank You for this video. This will make my work so much easier, as I was using so many midi tracks for each instrument.
Nice! I’ve been professionally composing in Digital Performer and Pro Tools for the last 26 years. Two weeks ago I started delving into Cubase. You can bet your bottom dollar this was extremely helpful and opens up a feature that’s EXTREMELY useful for today’s (and yesterday’s) libraries!! Thanks so much Thomas for your generous use of time and clear instruction! 👍👍
Thank you so much Tom. I have been stuck with expression maps setup tonight and your video helped me immensely. I'm building up a new template for my orchestral compositions and this information is just priceless! Great video, as always! :)
Best episode of this season. THANK YOU!
Great tutorial, I have one question. Is it possible to use the expression setups like you are doing but be able to use more than one at a time (for use with kontakt)? thanks
I don't understand how and why people dislike such a video. The information and philosophy here are invaluable and not things that one can even buy as tutorials! Anyways, God bless you Mr Holkenborg.
Thank you for this, you absolutely did not have to make a video of such depth. This is fantastic.
Didn't know about Expressions Maps at all! Not one more day will go by where i WON't use it! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Good to meet you Tom! Warren sent me here - Great video, extremely helpful, all of your videos!
I was searching the web for a proper explanation of Expression Maps because I already heard of but didn't quiet know a lot about them. After I stumbled over a few tutorials which didn't manage to give a plain and extensive explanation of the thing I was really happy to find out about Tom's tutorial since I was recently introduced to Orchestral Tools and his outstanding library JLX Brass and the documentation of it. So I was expecting a great and in-depth explanation and sure enough I wasn't disappointed! Thank you very much, gonna be spending the night programming some Expression Maps. :D
Great explanation.Really thankful you took time to make this video. I have found very useful if I change the direction to attribute, and then in the midi editor I choose colorize notes by articulations. There is also a little symbol on each note appears. Saved my life when I was doing West Site Story mock-ups. Huge fan of yours, you are living Genius.
46:55 This is game changing. There are so many uses for this. Not just orchestration.
I love the detailed videos. More when you can would be excellent. Thanks very much!
This is a great video well done!! As I use the VSL( non-synchron library) there are two key switches sometimes. Can I program these two key switches using expression maps?
These videos are invaluable. Truly. Thank you!
Question 1: Do you record notes and midi cc as one step, then go back and select your articulations with a pencil or keyswitches as a 2nd pass? A two step process when recording a instrument part??
Question 2: Did you explain what the little data is at the beginning of each track is in another video?
I use an ipad with Lemur buttons to trigger articulations with midi cc09 messages so I can select my articulation, then play both notes and exp-mod-vibr faders on my fader box.
Hi Tom, thank you for your amazing videos!Just a question for you. How does the "direction" setting in articulation fit/speed up your composing workflow?I'm really curious because when I started using expression maps a couple of years ago I struggled a bit with the direction/attribute thing and went for the attribute setting because I found out that it saved me later work when I wanted to move notes or have them slightly dequantized. Thank you again for your great job!
Hi Junkie XL! Thank you for the lovely video. I like to ask you regarding Dorico, whether you use for composition as you have mentioned in this video? If so, will you be making UA-cam videos of it too?
Hey Tom!
I'd just like to thank you for sharing all this knowledge and experience. Your videos are generously informative and demonstrate how passionate you conduct your work & art.
All the best!!
Keep on!!
*by reading some of the comments here... I'm not the only one who thinks that ;)
Warren Huart sent me here! Amazing Tom! Thank you!
Thank you so much. Are your expresion maps for sale somewhere?
How to address the Negative Track Delay / Track Offset issue with Expression Maps? I can't find any information...
Well, I realised that first the Cubase is becoming better and better and second the expression maps are really handy and flexible!! Great Lesson as Always Tom!!!
Dear Sir, this is sarvanaa from India, I work for Indian films as a film composer. I really want to take a while thanking you for your Great and Generous support for the young people sharing all that you know. I am a constant follower of your videos and also your films, you really do not know how much people benefit out there. Loads of love from India God Bless you :)
I would be curious if you have experience with the Note Expressions. If so, your take on that would be helpful. Thanks!
Thank you for a very informative tutorial! Expression Maps are really, really deep, but your tutorial makes it really easy to follow. I'm off to program some for my setup... :-)
Thanks a lot for this really informative video.
Makes me want to start immediately creating some expression maps for some of my libraries now.
Thank you very much, Tom for this work and for everything you do!!!! Low bow from Russia!
Thank you for this great video, Tom! I am not sure if this has been addressed somewhere else, but could you go over Dynamics which is also found in the Articulations area.
hi!
many thanks Tom
on my Cubase 9.5 I continue to have problems in the use of expression map:
When I stop playback the expression maps is reset to the first value. the trick of the first free slot does not work.
I know is a common problems...any suggestion?
Thanks for your video and for any suggestion!!
Matteo
Hi. great channel and great video.
You showed us how to put a midichannel into a expression map. But is it possible to put a track from another midiport into a expression maps? because you have midichannel ,and you have the midiport. Thanks
Oh my god. This is insanly amazing! I could pass from Reaper to Cubase only for this tool!
Reaper has its own beta equivalent. Reaexpression or something like that. It's user made though, but you can give it a try while you save money for cubase
Hi JunkieXL! Thanks for the tips! I may have one for you! Everytime I see you do right click to choose the pencil, I always hold down ALT key and it transforms to Pencil, and if you mouseover an event It'll transform to Scissors. (I don't know if you made any change to the alt key shorcut) But hope you give it a try!
Hey Tom, how does using expression maps change your stemming? Are you grouping strings into high/low as opposed to shorts and longs?
thank you sooo much for this! just what i needed to make things easier!!
Hi Junkie XL, thanks for the tutorial. I am starting to use this technology and found several issues that I was able to solve and I can see that you have not.
1- Resetting the cursor will also reset the expression to the first one in the list. Very annoying. This can be solved by adding a dummy (empty, without key switch assigned) entry in the expression map at the top. This will then no longer reset the expression.
2- You also have issues with expressions that are triggered at the same time as a note not being triggered before the note. This is not related to cubase but the depends on the library (instrument) you use. It needs to be smart enough to filter out expression keys. E.g. I tested this with Orchestral Tools successfully. Never had issues with expressions not triggered with a note.
3- Attribute mode has a very big advantage, in that they will move or copy with the notes.
Dank je wel Tom, geweldig verklaring! Can you please explain the dynamics map as well? You mention it at the beginning of the video saying you'd focus on it in another tutorial. Alsjeblieft!
Thanks! I needed a really in-depth video about this to understand it properly
Great explaination on how expression maps are working - very well! :)
So I created my own expression maps for different keyswith instruments. But everytime I close and reload the project I have to set the expression maps manually again for each instrument. Is there a way that cubase can save it and set them automatically for existing tracks and/or instruments?
Have you tried save as a template?
Hi Tom, I’m wondering if you can answer this about using expression maps. How do you deal with track offsetting each articulation when pretty much all articulations, in all commercial libraries, have different offset times? You can only use one negative track offset per track and having many arts on one channel is making this difficult to understand how it’s even possible. Thanks man
Hi Luke!
Did you get any response in the meantime?
I am also really wondering how Tom is getting along with this issue that you perfectly described in your video.
Do you use expression maps or did you have to stick to the standard procedure (i.e. 1 Midi-channel per articulation)?
Cheers!
@@henria.8269 No I didn't get a response but in order to use Exp Maps how they currently are is to split all your longs and shorts. Until you can negatively offset each art individually, its the only way. From a production point of view, splitting them into shorts and longs is actually standard practise so its not all bad. haha!
My template has just short of 1000 tracks and that has nearly 8000 arts all split into longs and shorts😂
@@Mrjononotbono
OMG! Better not counting the amount of articulations ;-)
I already read it in the comments of your video - like I read all of the comments, because they are full of helpful information.
OK, so I´m gonna do the splitting into longs and shorts, now that I know that it is common standard for the time being.
Thanks for your fast reply - cheers!
@@henria.8269 no worries man! I’m going to make a new video on Exp maps and all this stuff as I have lost months and months of my life trying all this stuff and it’s a lot of work. Let’s see if it’s pointless 😂
@@Mrjononotbono
I´m sure that this would be highly appreciated by a lot of viewers! Can´t wait to watching it!
So, another question on this old video (if anyone even sees the question there). How do you deal with setting up expression maps to try and be somewhat consistent among various libraries from different vendors? Or do you just not worry about that?
I am a big fan, many thanks for such an enlightening session, have one question what is the application on your touch screen and how do you set it up to control cubase? maybe that would be a nice idea for a tutorial :)
When using articulations of type direction is it possible to have 2 articulations active at the same time?
it's .. fantastic! great review and guide. Thank you!!!
Do you load a Kontakt instance for each instrument articulation (in case it's need it) or put all the articulations patches in one intance??
My friend, you answered my biggest question: The original keyswitch receiving data from the new keyswitch. Wonderful!
This is so awesome, Tom! Thanks for doing this! I have a quick question - can the channel assignments be done with Instrument tracks, or do they have to be MIDI tracks?
I answered my own question. They have to be MIDI tracks.
Tom, not sure if you'll see this. But at 7:19, you demonstrate the "Trill Whole" articulation, but it's actually a half-tone trill! The reverse is true at 7:22, where the "Trill Half" is actually a whole-tone trill!
I'll never use anything but Cubase. We love you, Tom!
This is very interesting. Can articulations be set on single MIDI NOTES? Such thing is possible in LPX with "Articulation ID". You can have MIDI notes playing at the same time but set them in different articulations. Is that possible with Cubase?
Thank you Junkie XL. Very good explanation of Expression maps.
FINALLY I understand it..I tried messing with it in the past but I must have done something wrong. Going to be running some tests on my sketch template, going to do a new template in a week or 2, so I am well prepared this time. Oh boy, the template will take me forever but I am sure it's going to be worth it.
I do have a question, what happens if I am loading more than 16 articulations for each OT instrument on VE pro, Can I change the port on Expression Maps to fit in more articulations as individual midi channels? Thank you so much!
+ 1 to J Benoit comment... absolutely amazing knowledge and information....
Just one question please Tom.... can you save different expression maps to different templates... or is there no need to do that?
Hello, have you used Vienna Instrument Pro? I have the Solo Strings package trying to set up articulations from Vienna, but they seem incomplete concerning the Output Routing. For violin viola and cello a Benjamin Britain piece uses every string articulation in the book.
When I import a Vienna instruments map it doesn’t seem to be set up properly at all. Any suggestions?
Is there yet a way to input Expression Maps lane data via MIDI, either playing or step-inputting? In other words, is tapping the articulations in with a pointing device the only way to program the lane?
Let's say you wanted to program an articulation change at the playhead by clicking a touchscreen button. Would that be possible?
Thanks very much Tom! Much appreciated
How do you separate strings into short and long groups when using expression maps? If all the string articulations are on a single track isn't it impossible to separate the shorts and longs into two different groups? Thank you!
Cool channel. I love how you know how to make the orchestral sounds sound more realistic. I found you from Rick beato
pooper pants ... Me too.
Sorry! I saw that you had a whole tutorial for the touch screen, but I do have one More question: I am trying to build an expression map for Cinematic Studio Strings, but Cubase seem to have a maximum number of articulation lanes that it can show, so I cannot see all the articulations I added to the expression map, am I doing anything wrong? Many Many thanks!
Granted though, it is called Expression Maps, not just Key Switching. So you can do more with this, I get that. Nevertheless, it's really nice to have the Key Switching tab in the pianoroll of Studio One. All on one MIDI-track. Just one lane needed, and only one instance loaded in your Kontakt or whatever sample player you are using. And yes, you also need to build your Key Switch maps, but that's much easier and you can save & load them. If you're looking for a DAW... :)
I am dancing in my room after knowing we can use channels in Articulation Map!!!Thank you so much Tom!🤩
Hello Tom!
I watched your video and you inspired me to explore the possibilities of Expression Maps in more detail. I found an interesting opportunity in Cubase, which I want to share.
With the help of Expression Mapes and Input Transformer, I found the opportunity to access 16 * 16 = 256 instruments from one MIDI keyboard, with the ability to control the articulations of each of them!
Suppose we want to control only string instruments from channel 5 of the MIDI keyboard. We have tracks strings1 and strings2.
1. Create a instrument track and set up an input transformer "pass ch 5". Let's call it "MidiKeyboardCH5". Input device is our midi keyboard. An output device is any empty silent VSTI tool that has a midi thru function. A simple sampler, or something like that.
2. Create an expression map on this track that switches the MIDI channels via the "key switch". I personaly use Program Change messages,
3. On the String1 track, configure the input transformer "pass ch 1". Input device is "MidiKeyboardCH5 OUT"
4. On the String2 track, configure the input transformer "pass ch 2". Input device is "MidiKeyboardCH5 OUT"
That's all. Now on channel 5 of the MIDI keyboard we have two instruments switchable via the "key switch" or PrgChg messages.
The remaining channels and instruments setting up in the similar way.
Each one of the 16 channels of MIDI keyboard will allow you to control 16 instruments. A total of 256 instruments. And on each individual instrument track, you can still switch articulations using the Expression Map on this channel.
Hope this would be helpful.
My brother, what is the name of the shortcut to show the expression maps window? Thanks for the knowledge
what string vst that I can program the note expression on it? because I tried it on Kontakt (Session Strings) plugin and it didn't work.
How do you deal with instruments that have so many articulations you can’t read them onscreen in f you put them all in the same expression map? Do you make multiple expression maps grouped by similar articulations (ie, longs, shorts, etc.)
Tom, have you experimented with the Babylonwaves ones? There.s mistakes here and there in Logic, haven't tried with Cubase...What do you think?
Hi Tom, Thanks a lot for this tuto which is Cristal clear. It works perfectly in Cubase12. But I cannot transfer the articulations switch to Dorico 4.
I use an good expression map I made for BBC-SSS Violin, in cubase (it works well) then tru to export a file.mid (one track to test) and import it into dorico. Even if I use the "merge midi in the loop" function, after importation of the expression map from cubase into dorico, all notes remains on the same articulation : no visual or sounding articulation is trig.
I am stock... any clue ???
Thanks!!!
Very helpful video, thank you. It answered several of my questions. At the risk of being greedy, you didn't say anything about the "Root Note" or the "Set Remote Keys" button in the lower left. I understand "Latch Mode" alright, but I'm confused on those two controls. Can anyone explain? Thanks in advance!
what is the use of color in the sound slot?
Hi Tom. Just a question:
Cubase midi send (1-4) with big templates. Is there a fast way of working with it? Like editing cubase XML... or some other way.
My problem is that I have to select the same MIDI send (midi port-channel) for EVERY midi track and have more than 1600 tracks. I know that this question should be in another thread.
If you say "No, it doesn't" I get that it means "Good work".
Thank you anyway 😃
Amazing tutorial. Thanks a lot!
Great video! I do have a question: some libraries (e.g. Spitfire Chamber Strings) have a huge amount of articulations. While Cubase can handle a large amount of expressions per track, I found this made the lanes in the midi editor extremely small. Do you selectively choose the articulations you are likely to use or do you have an alternate midi channel for those more extensive libraries? Thanks!
Good question. An example of a more involved library would certainly be helpful.
@@lahattec I thought I had a pretty good example with the Spitfire Chamber Strings. The first violins have over 31 articulations. So my questions is in Tom's use of expression mapping does he only select the articulations he would most commonly use or does he separate the articulations into multiple tracks. If you were to use all 31 articulations on one instrument, you would use a very large portion of your editor window. Unfortunately, the expression lanes don't scroll, so unless you widen the area containing the lanes, it's really hard to read.
If I were doing this sort of setup, I assume it would be best to choose the articulations you commonly use and keep it around 10 articulations per instrument track. I was just curious.
@@roycelcolemusic I use UACC on my Spitfire libraries and make large articulation maps. But instead of "Direction", I use "Attribute" and change articulations in the Info line at the top of the ediotor with right-click instead of in the bottom lane.
@@arvfur I will have to check this out. Thanks for the reply!
@@arvfur to use "Attribute" instead of "Direction" seems a very cool choice, thanks for sharing.
This is insane. The degree of clarity and depth he goes into without bullshitting along the way is just incredible. Anyone know how to set up a touchscreen like he has there? I'm aware of iPads being used with apps (metagrid, OSC, etc), but I see that his is a Dell. How does that work?
Excellent work!!
Hey Junkie, love you show. May I ask what is the flat screen with the colored squares in front of your computer? I'm a new film composer and would like to know if I might benefit from using that tool.
I really wish Cubase had it's own coloured block / shortcut system built into it directly without having to use 3rd party software like Lemur or Metagrid. So for example have a grid/block system that you can set up yourself in an editor window in the lower region. You can drag blocks where you want and edit the macros inside each block. Then with a Cubase App it can communicate directly.
It is a good guide, Tom. Thanks for this, although I don't need it, it's good to know.
Just started watching but thanks for sharing
Very helpful - thanks!
How about morphing the articulations together? For example taking a single long sustain note from tremolo to trill and back to sustain, without actually re-triggering a sample? Thanks a lot for your videos Tom!
hello People. What was your DAW before changing to Cubase? And why did you change?
Does that mean that you are limited to 16 articulations if you use the midi channel expression map technique ?
Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! I've been waiting a long time for this episode. Great info, I love it. ** I do have two questions please: 1) Where do we get the info that tells us which key switches trigger the articulations? (Example: From your notepad in the video at 17:10) Is this something we get from the developer of that particular library or where? 2) Once we've created our Expression Maps how do we export them if we need to back them up for future use? Thank you again. I'm a huge follower of the channel. Looking forward to more. Cheers!
- The key switches will be those that are in the instrument already. So what you would use without Expression Maps. For kontakt it's often represented on the interface of an instrument, but also usually documented in the instruments manual.
- There's a save option in the Expression Map Setup window. So you can "export" a map by saving it.
@@jesperankarfeldt7496 thank you. I'll check ot out.
Thanks Tom for this great video...Is super information!
