  • On this episode, I will introduce you to the wonderful program, VEP, or Vienna Ensemble Pro. This was and still is a gamechanger to the composing world of virtual instruments. I will show you how it works and how to set it up properly. When I first started, there wasn't a tutorial on how to get started so I thought it would be helpful to walk you through the steps.

    Josh, Thank you for your step by step approach to training. It is so much more intuitive and easier to follow than the manufacturer’s tutorials. Theirs left me completely frustrated. VEP7 is a great program and it has taken the burden off my DAW audio performance and has stream lined my composing/production process. Thanks for bringing clarity. Kudos!

    i've used VEP for a while, mostly with VSL and Kontakt - game changer!
    i JUST bought EW HW Orch Diamond, i am slowly going through the manuals.
    What an amazing set of instruments!!!
    Your video showed me something SO basic that i missed, you can ADD patches inside Play 6 and assign them to different midi channels.
    simple, i know.
    But i was treating Play 6 like Vienna Instruments Pro 2, a single channel player.

      Sohn Compositions Trust me, it’s been used. My father purchased Mastercraft in 1985 which was a mastering lab in Memphis, TN (it was named Mastercraft prior to our becoming involved). We did Stax, Al Green and the rest of Hi Records. I came here interested in Vienna Ensemble Pro as I just purchased it for a new recording PC I built (what I do these days). You seem to be very thorough in your knowledge of it.

    Thank you! You are really good at teaching :D But I have one question. Do I have to load corresponding vsts on vsl everytime I open up different projects? For example, if I want to open up a project consisted of 1 action strike, 1 studio snare and one Alicia Keys, do I have to load those three vsts and route them everytime I open that project?

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  5 років тому

      Well, all you need to do is load it up once on VEP and it will always be there. To avoid always routing the MIDI and audio channel from your DAW to VEP, save the session as a template. That way when you load a new project, load it up as a new template in your DAW and your session will have all go the routing in place with VEP

    hi very good explanation for the link between cubase and Vep7. but how can you drive CC# from cubase to Vep7... how do you link them ... via 8 direct controllers per track ???? do you have a video about it ?

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  2 роки тому +1

      Driving CC# data from your faders into VEP7 isn't a problem. It works the same if you were to do it in through natively in Cubase compared to Cubase & VEP. Are you using a different fader board? As long as the fader board you use is set globally to the armed midi track, then it should work fine.

      Hey Daniel, I think it helps to have at least an 8-core processor within 10-15 years of when it was built. I'm running an older 8-core Xeon workstation with 64 GB ram. You can do it all on one PC, but I don't think it helps with buffering as much as being able to switch in and out of sessions quickly without having the huge load times. Hope that helps!

    Hi, great video!!! I have just got hold of VEPRO 7 and am currently building my orchestral template. I am using vepro with cubase pro 10.5. I have a quick question if you don't mind? I have vepro set up in this way, all my instruments i have loaded in vepro (instances!!) are routed to a separate bus. Each single instrument has its own bus !! then i have routed all those individual busses back into cubase to individual audio tracks!! Basic example........ VIOLINS 1 (VEPRO INSTANCE 1 MIDI IN 1)-------- VIOLINS 1 BUS(VEPRO)------------VIOLINS1 AUDIO CHANNEL/TRACK (CUBASE OUTPUT 1/2). My question is that when i have done all my recording and am ready to do a fianl mixdown, how does this work with vepro? How do i mixdown with vepro in a way that the mixdown goes to the individual audio channel tracks that i have already set in cubase????
    I am totally new to vepro so tbh i am not sure about how to do this? Man y thanks for any advice or help you can give!! Best regards. #STAY SAFE

      So I'm using a 16 (8 physical 8 virtual) core Xeon Workstation with 64 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD Raid 0 for the sample drive. It's a little older but it gets the job done. With it on full load, it can spike a bit so I'll need to upgrade in a year or two once I get more samples.

      Hey Jeffrey, yes you can use it with one computer which is useful when you're switching between different sessions that use the same set of samples (for film scoring especially). You can also do a hybrid and have the majority of your samples on VEP while having a small set of VST tracks inside of your DAW as well.

      Are you talking about VST plugins? If so, some of them are for loading on the slave computers if you networking your computers together to work as one unit. There's another for Vienna Ensemble Player which is like Kontakt but with native VSL sample libraries.

  • @mazetoeden9334

    • @SohnCompositions

      You can do both. If you plan to load one patch that has multi-articulations via keyswitches, then that would be one midi channel inside of VEP. If you do single articulations per patch then that would be one midi channel per patch.

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  5 років тому

      Hmm, i think your PLAY .dll file needs to be loaded in the VEP settings. VEP does not support VST3 plugins, so you'll need to load in the VST2 version of Play (.dll file) which you'll need to find somewhere in your hard drive folder. In Windows, it's usually in the VST plugins folder (64 bit) I believe. If not, try to find the VST2 and point the directory into the VEP plugins settings.

      It will have cpu/ram affect on the computer. But the DAW is free of resources as VEP is handling that, yeah? So people also host a VEP on another system, this way zero resources are used on your main system aka host. These remote systems are called slaves and can be windows or Mac.

For example, I notice you do not talk about how the VEPro 7 manual states that integrating VEPro within each DAW is unique. The manual states Cubase users must add VEPro as a rack instrument. What really confuses me, is why are you adding multiple plugins on a single plug in channel?

    • @SohnCompositions
      @SohnCompositions  3 роки тому

      Adding multiple patches inside one instance of PLAY or Kontakt is one method that I chose to make things less cluttered and have it all fit inside of an output channel for a single instrument voice like an oboe (i.e. oboe sus, oboe stacc, oboe trills etc.). If you need any help, then I can teach private lessons on this subject. Hit me up if you're interested.
