- How to create a COMPOSING TEMPLATE in CUBASE 10.5
I've been writing a lot of trailer music lately. To help speed up the process, I created this composing template and I am sharing it with you! Click the link below for a free download:

That unused folder idea is genius. Genius! I love it so much. All those unused tracks were one of the main reasons why I didn't enjoy a big template I made a while back.
Btw, there's a keycommand available for enable/disable track. Not assigned to anything per default.
The "unused" folder idea is really great. Thank you, I copied that to my template.
Amazing instruction! Not just with all important steps included, but perfect amount of repetitions, perfect cutting of unnecessary parts, concise explations of why each step is important, and a very nice voice. Please keep making videos!
The way you have described the benefits and power of Cubase's templates have completely sold me on it against every other DAW. Thank you for making what is historically a very hard decision into an extremely easy one. Instant sub.
Hey Caleb! Thanks for your kind words. Cubase has shown a pattern of healthy enhancements in the last couple of years. They seem to really listen to customer feedback, which is why it continues to be our preferred DAW. Hopefully you enjoy it as well. Also, if you have ideas for future videos please let us know!
People always say "Use what DAW you are most comfortable in" if I would have taken that advice I'd still be in Ableton (absolutely horrible for orchestral work), I detest that statement, use what DAW actually SUPPORTS the type of music you make and has the highest potential workflow enhancement.
I love your tutorial, please dont't stop making them!
This is exactly what I've been looking for. I've been using Ableton Live 10 for a while and didn't realise that Cubase is so much more suited to score composing. Thanks you sir. I will set up my template on Cubase this weekend!
Oh my Holly GOD, dude you don't know how long I was browsing the channels, all the same, but you, you are one of a kind, pretty simple easy and straight to the point, you earned a sub!
Glad you enjoyed it Teimu! Let us know if there's anything you want to see in a future video and we'll make it happen :)
@@TallTreeAudio Please make an easy tutorial for epic music like just for one minute that will be awesome!
Cheers!
I was looking for this feature with disabled tracks forever and now I have it! Thank you a lot! Greetings from Ukraine!
Man this is awesome.Thank you so much for doing this!
This is really helpful, thanks for the efforts :D
Bought Cubase because of this. This is going to save so much time, thank you!
OMG man, this video is amazing. Thank you!
Wow this is exactly what I need. Thank you, it'll be a massive time saver once set up
Fantastic tutorial for creating a Cubase template! Thank you for posting.
Extraordinary result.
Thank you for your hard and time saver work ! ;)
Great help. Just moved to cubebase from fl studio. Started out on that as was making Edm for a few years but when I started scoring, found it super challenging.
Lots of different/new setups in cubebase that I’m not used to so this was super helpful
Thanks for providing the template. This was a great video.
Thanks for your work. Super Tutorials.
oh i'm waiting .... thank you so much .
Thanks a lot for that! I just switched from Pro Tools to Cubase and those were super useful infos to help me start my first template! The routing in Cubase is definitely a mystery at the moment ahah, feels way different than in PT. Cheers!
Man ! This is so helpful 🙏🏻
Your tutorial was very helpful, thank you!
Thank you very much for your work and this great Tutorial :-)
Great tutorial, thank you very much.
Great tutorial! Special thanks for the template ;)
Great and very clear
Incredible! I loved your work! I'm new on Cubase but watching and listening to you gives me a lot of confidence so I hope I can do it :)
Thanks Carolina! Let us know if you have any content suggestions and we will include it in future videos :)
Awesome vid, thanks man!
Very helpful, thank you very much!
Great tutorial
Nice sharing!
hi thanks for the tuto!I m amazed about your abilities I work 'til now with cubase pro 10 and I m about to prchase the up grade 10.5 And Isee I ll have a hell of a job to compose a track like this,it bast me away!
I newer saw it that way, please go one to make tutorial, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge 👍
Thank you for putting together such a useful, concise tutorial. It has been invaluable as I transition over to Cubase. The disabled track feature is incredibly useful for large templates, but I just wish it was a little more automatic. In Logic all empty template tracks will open disabled by default, then auto-enable the moment you add a MIDI region to it. I'd like to see Steinberg add this to Cubase as well.
Great video. Very useful. Thanks a lot. Keep on posting :-) I have subscribed
Amazing
Thanks bro!
Thank you so much
Thank You very much:)
Thank you! A new Cubase user here :)
Welcome to the Cubase family! Hope you enjoy your experience :)
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I've been using FL Studio for quite some and now I'm thinking of moving to Cubase. I want to learn how to make epic orchestral music but i have no clue which vst and plugins I should use for start. Could you please tell me what basic VSTs I should use as a starting point?
thanks !!!
Thank you for this really helpful video ! I wonder what's the practical use of the master track. You said you like to have one "just to be safe". Could you explain us what you mean by that ?
thank you ;)
Great video, thank you! Quick question. If I was to create a template and then get a new computer down the line that has the exact same banks/samples etc but located in a different file location - would the template still work?
This was a great help!
Now, if only there was a way to have tracks be automatically disabled inside of the "Unused Folder" and automatically enabled outside of it..
Just looked at some of your videos. I'm bummed you're not making anymore!
great
cool!
Old Chinese proverb . He who uses Logic will end up inside Cubase
Thanks for the tutorial. I do have a question though. I just purchased the EWQL Symphonic Orchestra libraries to use on Cubase, but when I try to use them on Cubase, the "VSTi" menu on the side is void of color, and the tracks won't play any sound whatsoever. If I try to turn the knobs for things such as pan or frequency, it'll just say "inactive". When I go to activate, it says it's already been active. What can I do to fix this?
But using multiple kontakt instances isnot affecting ram?
May I ask the benefit of creating that master track vs keeping them separate? Noob question, I know.
Great Video! But you like to have a stereo master track just to be on the safe side? Safe from what? Vampires? Pls explain.
Fair point! Vampires are a real threat to my creative flow. But on a real note I prefer not to have any plugins on the final fader, just a preference born from my own paranoia.
Thank you man for this video. I wanna ask something. How do the settings to show up velocity in your track midi piano roll? Like on 11:12, track symphonic trem. Thank you man
Good question! In the piano roll window, there is a small arrow on the bottom left. Click that to bring up different midi modifications like velocity, pan, and modulation. Hopefully that helps! Email me for a more detailed description 👍
Amazing video :) Do you know if you need the Cubase Pro version to create orchestral music or can you also use Cubase Artist? I'm thinking about buying the program, but I don't know which of the two versions I should take.
Cubase Pro is not required, but highly recommended. The biggest reason would be the number of instrument tracks you can add. Orchestral music has many layers, and it's hard to achieve a professional sound without having unlimited instrument tracks available. Hopefully that helps! Email me for a more detailed description 👍
how come someone dislike this video ! strange .
You did not mention how to set up Kontakt for all the tracks to work.
Hi! I have a question. Some people have one instance of Kontakt per section and they use midi tracks for individual instruments. How do they go about mixing/exporting those instruments?
Good question! When you use one instance of kontakt, there is an option to route audio to different channels for your instruments. Just create multiple audio channels in your DAW and then choose the correct routing from Kontakt. Email me for a more detailed description!
After clicking on the cpr file its asking for to locate project folder which is missing.
Very pretty template you got there friend ;) A word from me...As I have a lot of Risers, SFX etc. I have them in my Kontakt´s quickload window. I save a lot of ram that way. Maybe somebody finds it helpful. Cheers
why not multi channel kontakt?
Hi, one question about this template. Do you hide tracks that are under "Unused" in the mixer? You only show the mixer in the beginning when you route to Group Tracks, not when it's finished. Thanks for a super great video.
Any instrument that is not activated goes in the 'unused' folder. After that, I completely turn off each track using the 'disable track' function. Those tracks won't show up in the mixer until you reactivate them!
@@TallTreeAudio aha, cool feature. Dont think I have that in Reaper. Must look around and see if its there somewhere. Thanks alot.
4:40 Logic Pro has the on off button ;)
Great video, but why do you have one instance of kontakt per instrument? that uses a lot of RAM... why not group many instruments inside one kontakt instance and preserve RAM? Just a geniune curiosity question, not trying to be a troll or anything..
Great question! Both options are viable. One empty instance of Kontakt uses 60-80 MB of RAM. I have made the organization choice to do individual kontakt instances, because I have the RAM to spare. If you are constantly struggling with RAM usage, the way you described may be a better option. Hope that helps!
This only for PRO right? I have Cubase elements and don’t have many tracks
how to listen the cpr file in cubase? lol.. i'm new in cubase..
Is it not better to create less Kontakt instances? I used FL Studio before this and routed the patches to different midi tracks to save on RAM. I'm just curious if this makes the same difference in Cubase Pro. I would prefer to set my template the way you did, but not if it's going to take more RAM.
Hey Keanu! You make a great point. Routing in Kontakt is a great way to save RAM, and I would recommend that option if you are working with less than 32 gb RAM on your computer. Another great option is many orchestral libraries provide individual articulations as well as multi-articulations. Choosing the individuals will save tons of RAM space on larger projects. Hopefully that helps!
@@TallTreeAudio I decided to work with different tracks since I have 32gb ram. Also, you're right as well with the single articulations. I've done it already with a few of them. Thank you for your reply as well!
Hi, can you explain how do you integrate reverb Plug ins into your Template?
Sure! There are 2 ways that I do it. Go to the mixer and select the track you want reverb on, then right click and choose 'Add FX Send to selected channels' or the other way is to choose the instrument in the playlist view, click 'Edit Channel Settings' and then add a reverb to the channel plugins on the left side of the pop-up window. Email me for a more detailed description!
Okay i do it the Same was Like you. But i use to reverbs ... Algo...and Impulse :)
You can't use Expression Maps with this method unfortunately or I'm missing something.
Expression Maps still have too many downsides for me. Hopefully Steinberg keeps improving them.
You're using a Kontakt instance for each instrument. Couldn't you use one Kontakt for multiple instruments and route them to different channels? I hear it's less taxing on your machine
Hey Temp Step! Yes, you can absolutely do this, and I would suggest this option if you are experiencing slowness/processing issues. You also will lower the RAM usage, but not by a significant amount. Hopefully this helps!
@@TallTreeAudio
I see, thank you. It helps
what's the difference between disabling a track and muting it?
Hey Gli! The major difference here is that disabling a track will offload the instrument from your computer's RAM. Muting the track, however, will keep the instrument loaded on your system's RAM. Hopefully this helps!
@@TallTreeAudio yes, thanks!
bro. lol .haha
if cubase were a car, the indicators and gears would be installed in the trunk.
