The attack on preservatives is so disappointing. I see so many sellers bragging about their lack of preservatives. In anhydrous products is different but for body scrubs that are exposed to water it’s crazy.
Thank you for including essential oils! Most ppl never want to talk about the unpopular side of the dangers of EOs. Yes the can be a great thing, but when used properly and with caution. Ppl think because they are "natural" they are automatically the saver better option and that's simply not the case at all.
I was at a beauticians once and she started pouring straight peppermint EO into my hair. When I got up and asked her to wash it out immediately, she was like 'its natural'. It's crazy. These are chemicals.
Honestly, I won't use them in any formula intended for anyone outside of my immediate household because of the risks. Between medical contraindications and allergies/sensitivities combined with the fact that they're not rigorously tested for potency or regulated, I just prefer not to open myself up to liability.
My biggest mistake was trying to avoid "synthetic" ingredients and being afraid to use a preservative. The word "preservative" has been almost weaponized in the battle between natural and the "scary" world of, well, unnatural. I now formulate anything containing water or anything that night come in contact with water from wet hands (or even otherwise risk introduction of contaminants from dipping/scooping into a jar) around the type of broad spectrum preservative I prefer.
Water is essential in the upper layers of the skin to allow it to function properly. Enzymatic reactions in the skin require water to execute their functions. A simple example of this is the natural exfoliation process of the skin, water is required to break the bonds holding the cells in place, so water helps the skin to exfoliate all on its own. Water is always maligned in skin care as filler but it is a necessary skin care ingredient as well as a great solvent for formulas. When using anhydrous products, these can also disrupt the barrier function because the natural lipid matrix is a blend of ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids and non essential fatty acids in a specific ratio 3:1:1:1. Using free fatty acids alone (oils & butters) can tip the balance of free fatty acids negatively to disrupt the barrier leading to water loss and sensitivity. This might be an idea for a lesson on incorporating ceramides and cholesterol into moisturizers, body butters and facial oil formulations. It’s all about balance, dosing and skin function 😊.
Really it’s Just actually about drinking the water that is essential to the functioning of the skin…Factoring in the body's largest organ ...aka the Skin contains the Eccrine sweat glands that occur over most of the body that open directly onto the skin's surface which needs to sweat out around a litre or more a day to maintain homeostasis of body temperature in this process many external skin products will eventually just wear off or evaporate out with the body’s sweat The skin will naturally shed its dead skin cells to make room for new cells around every 30 days or a so.!! This can be gently assisted with very simple skin softening home remedy of around ½ cup of warm liquid honey a teaspoon of fine Himalayan pink salt or other natural fine salt (don’t need very much) and for a little indulge 2-3 dessert spoons of full cream milk powder mix with just enough water to make a thick paste…alternatively fresh dessert cream or a natural plain yoghurt…mix all these together ....smother & massage onto your skin just before a bath or a shower for 5-10 min if time permits but in the bathroom can get a bit sticky. But it’s fun an extra or alternative ingredient would be oats blitzed in a food processor / Ninja if you want a finer texture this is as natural & as fresh as can be…. and should be used once made …Not to be stored once water is added to any product it becomes a breeding ground for pathogens.. Enjoy .....🥰🍯 🦋🐝🌌
I had no idea that my skin did not like baking soda and epsom salt until I made two different face scrubs with each product. That baking soda tore my skin up.
You made me laugh at myself. As you pulled things out of the cupboard to use in a formulation, I purchased all of those oils because of the different makers I was watching... Fortunately for me, by the time they arrived at my house I'd forgot what I was going to use them in. I have used and adapted more simple recipes to try. I use your recipes now, look for replacement ingredients to use the stuff I do have and hope all this starts clicking in my mind!
So happy I stumbled upon your channel about a month ago, when I started sharing all of my wisdom. 😬 Oh boy as much as I know there's so much more I don't. It made me take a step back. And I am so happy that I did! My hope is that I can leap forward with confidence knowing that what I am sharing is correct. I am signed up for the master class and can't wait to start. 😊
one of my summer bucket list goals this year is learning how to formulate shampoo bars, and you’ve been so helpful in getting that started! im gonna try your 6 ingredient sulfate free bars soon, since I’ve never made shampoo before and want to stick to something super simple!! wish me luck :-)
I use orange peal for my vit c. Defuse it over 2-3 weeks. I used it nightly for a year. My skin responded great. Once done. I removed peals. Np. I use jojoba oil
So true! I have been struggling with balancing natural but also effective. How do we decide what ingredients we put in and that we do not overdo it? Thank you
Formulation is a big topic, but you can do it! If you haven't already signed up for my free DIY Skincare for Beginners mini-course, I highly recommend it ❤️ www.humblebeeandme.com/free-course Happy making!
As a fellow Canadian is there one website specifically for someone just starting out they can order ingredients from as in one that carries a very large selection?? TYIA!! ❤ I should add that I’m looking to make body butters and lotion bars!!
I use baking soda as a ph adjuster, so it depends on the amount and the final ph if the end product. also, there is a difference between a rinse off and a leave on product. But overall soap is a harsh cleanser (even if you add a ton of extra non saponified oils to it).
What about oceans water??? PH 8-9...No, I don't think so, but I guess it depends on your skin. I have very sensitive skin, and I use castille soap on my face every day. I have no problems at all.
Great information as always. I am the prime example of “the kitchen sink” formulator of creating expensive products including all of my favorite ingredients. LOL
Hello I’m new here. I really want the nuxe deliciously nourishing body scrub but I can’t afford to spend $32 on it. I was hoping you could make a video on how to safely make it at home please 🙏?
Hi, I wanted to ask, after some days a Cream is made. Why does the oil gets separated from the cream? Is there a mistake I've been making or, what's the reason.
Well Actually....!! it might be worth a mention for those not aware... Skin Hydration & skin Moisturising are two different things...Essential for Hydrating the skin is a good & varied nutritional diet & less of or avoiding that which is highly processed-salty, trans-fatty acids, simple carbs..limiting sugar, coffee, alcohol etc... not smoking & quality sleep….and drinking the water that hydrates the body internally and supports the body's'' homeostatic process for whole body hydration. Also ...by immaculate design our skin…. (epidermis) the outermost layer of skin is Waterproof, a barrier that also contributes to skin tone…. it does not need or respond well to absorbing products made with water…..the only exception here would be a water based floral hydrosol spritzer to cool the skin for those experiencing discomfort a very hot day or having hot- flushes'. After a warm bath or shower your skin…. will respond well to a light application of either a mix or one of the following…..light olive oil, almond oil, apricot oil Grapeseed Oil…. that’s it…!! This is the real definition of Natural Skin Care for it doesn’t need too much fussing with all the other ingredients...think of the natural resources of ancient Egyptian & Grecian women etc... Also fyi on diy body products organic chemistry in the unpinning knowledge needed to do this safely and well...regards clinical aromatherapist. s 🍃⚛💠🌱 ♾🥀

I should add that I’m looking to make body butters and lotion bars!!
Hang tight - if baking soda is (also) bad because of the PH, (which is 8.5) does that mean we should NOT be using cold process soap? (PH 8-10)
Yes
I use baking soda as a ph adjuster, so it depends on the amount and the final ph if the end product. also, there is a difference between a rinse off and a leave on product. But overall soap is a harsh cleanser (even if you add a ton of extra non saponified oils to it).

I have very sensitive skin, and I use castille soap on my face every day. I have no problems at all.
Thats why products specified for sensitive skin is using gentle detergent with low ph (4.5-5.5) like sci
